In this episode of Clean & Simple, Carmen discusses the importance of inclusivity in hairstyling. Even when natural hair is being celebrated, it's often done through a particular lens that excludes more of our community than it includes. Certain curl patterns are praised while others are encouraged to be stretched or altered to be considered beautiful. And all curls are subjected to unfair judgment and regulations from schools, jobs, and other social situations.

It's so important for us to advocate for the acceptance and love of all curls. We should also expect the spaces that we occupy to show fairness when it comes to curls. If they don't, we have to strive for change. Legislation for The Crown Act is a prime example of fighting for acceptance and the destigmatization of Black hair in society. Acts and movements like these are required to shift beauty standards to become more inclusive and encourage diversity, not ostracize it.

Carmen also breaks down how to have uncomfortable conversations surrounding your hair and how to advocate for yourself.

In the natural hair world and for a long while, hair that is easy to manage, meaning it has a silky surface texture, and thick juicy curls are often associated with "good hair." The idea that one hair category, the tightly textured, is dictated by skewed views, passed down trauma, and crowdsourcing is crippling. Good hair is the hair that is unique to you, and is manageable, healthy and thriving.

In this episode of The Goal Is to Grow I chat with Samantha Forbes, a health and wellness coach who has helped hundreds begin to live a better life through individual coaching and wellness seminars. Leveraging her training and experience as a mental health therapist she went on to study nutrition, food and its role in our life and sense of well-being. In a culture obsessed with weight and body image she helped her clients ditch the diet mentality and cultivate a sense of empathy for themselves; to attend to and accept their whole self.
Currently, Sam works as an Educator at NYU Langone Health, and lately has developed and facilitated training for hospital staff on the importance of empathy and team communication in providing the perfect patient experience, relationship building with colleagues and promoting positive workplace culture. She provides subsequent individual coaching to learners to ensure transfer of skills learned in the class, including when empathy is called for and how to express it. Sam admits this may sound strange given that so many go into healthcare in part because of the deep sense of empathy they feel for those who are in a vulnerable state but the truth is, many still don't quite know what empathy is and how to express it.
