Each week the show’s topics will reveal insights learned from Kat’s experience as teacher, event concept producer and a helper of artists. From individual artist and creative stories, to topics designed to help burgeoning and experienced creative entrepreneurs, to new music and reviews, The LSP Effect will offer listeners a fresh take on the life as a creative in the 21st century.

Daughter of American converts to Islam, Umm Zakiyyah is the internationally acclaimed author of the If I Should Speak trilogy and the novels Realities of Submission and Hearts We Lost. Her novels have been used in universities in America and abroad including Indiana University-Bloomington, Howard University, University of D.C. and Prince Sultan University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
She writes about the interfaith struggles of Muslims and Christians, and the intercultural,
spiritual, and moral struggles of Muslims in America. Umm Zakiyyah’s work has earned praise from writers, professors, and filmmakers and has been translated into multiple languages. Currently, her first novel If I Should Speak is being contracted for a movie. In 2008, Umm Zakiyyah was awarded the Muslim Girls Unity Conference Distinguished Authors Award. Umm Zakiyyah also writes under her birth name Ruby Moore.

R. Kayeen Thomas is an author, poet, playwright, hip-hop artist, journalist, and social justice advocate. He self-published his first book, Light: Stories of Urban Resurrection, during his junior year at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. His novel, Antebellum, has garnered praise from such notables as Dr. Michael Eric Dyson and received acclaim from numerous publications, including Publishers Weekly. Most-recently, Thomas was nominated for a 2013 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Debut Author. His third novel, The Seven Days, was released on April 16, available everywhere books are sold. Thomas resides in Washington, D.C., with his wife and daughter.

Lisa Martin has over 10 years of experience working with arts and cultural events primarily in the Nation’s Capital, including the Smithsonian Folklife Festival as well as a wide variety of embassy events. The executive director of the Silver Spring Town Center, Lisa Martin joins Kat to discuss the importance of community spaces and the effect of public art.
Christine Johnson is dedicated to diversifying the technology entrepreneurial landscape through a multi-pronged approach which includes community building, education, resources and access to key industry leaders. Determined to make her vision a reality, Christine combined her entrepreneurial skills and passion for technology to found IamDTech (formerly DiversiTech) in 2010.
IamDTech was created in response to an overwhelming outcry for greater depth of inclusion for African-American, Latino, Asian, Middle Eastern, LGBT and Women within the technology entrepreneurship community. When asked, 'Who is DJ Senyo?'
DJ Senyo hails from Ghana but grew up outside of Washington, DC. His earliest memories of being introduced to music are of his dad’s Alpha Blondy, Jimmy Cliff, and Bob Marley records. They are also of taping new wave, alt-rock and grunge off the radio in DC to listen to on vacation in Ghana.
DJ Senyo came up in the rave scene in Montreal, dancing to jungle and he started DJing house and UK garage in 2000. He even worked with the Mighty Soul Champion Crew in Boston in 2002-2003.
DJ Senyo has been DJing for over 10 years, always tapping into his cultural heritage, but with a focus towards the future, toward community building, and innovating.

Goldie E. Deane is a playwright, scholar, artist and teacher of hip-hop culture. As a student of theatre, music, and creative writing for over 20 years, Goldie has gained recognition for her professional work as a spoken word artist and poet, and actor and playwright. Full of humor, heart, and passion she is noted for bridging the generational gap in the hip-hop community. A self-proclaimed "hip-hop womanist", she is mostly known for her work "HERstory: Love Forever, Hip-Hop". A graduate of Howard University's Theatre Arts Department, Goldie started early at building a community where young women of the hip-hop generation could express their opinions and share their talents. Since 2002 Goldie E Deane, has dedicated much of her energy and work to her organization F.R.E.S.H.H. Inc, Females Representing Every Side of Hip-Hop. F.R.E.S.H.H. As part of the growing scene of artists in Jos, Kahli Abdu started his journey in 1996, becoming part of the group “11:30″, later becoming “Eltophelli” (together with Jesse Jagz, now of Chocolate City Records) in 2006.
Kahli then moved to the U.S in 2005 and met with Chief Willis (of Basement Batman) and later with producer Kid Konnect. With the beats they provided, Kahli recorded several songs, which ended up, on his first mixtape “The Grind Theory”. A few years later, he put together his second mixtape “Ministry of Corruption”, and shortly after, he started and compiled his “Rebel Friday” Season 1.
Kahli is currently working on several projects including a follow up to his well received project with Kid Konnect: The Bandits EP. Kahli recently released a mixtape titled Band of Rebels, which is available for free at republiqrecords.com. Kahli Abdu is the founder of the Republiq Records label and, under the label, will be looking to progress in the music industry as well as produce, manage and collaborate with other artists.

Bill grew up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota near a small town, Princeton. After completing hisundergraduate degree in accounting from St. Cloud State University in 1985, he worked for Coopersand Lybrand in Minneapolis as an auditor for three years. He then left Coopers and Lybrand toobtain and MBA in Finance from Indiana University. After he graduated from Indiana University,he worked for 3M Company in the Finance organization for 17 years in various locations – St Paul,Minnesota; Austin, Texas; Bangalore, India; and Atlanta, Georgia. Then Bill joined the Peace Corpsin his 40s as a Community Development Volunteer in Albania. His first book called Follow MyDream is a collection of his monthly email letters to family and friends during the two years he wasa Peace Corps Volunteer. He now works as a Finance Manager with the American Red Cross inWashington, DC.

This Louisiana native found her voice in her teenage years when journal writing evolved into poetry. Both her sister and mother shared original work with the young poet. Dupas remembers vividly how their words resonated in her mind and inspired her to tell her own story. Though she began writing her own poetry at a young age, it was not until her senior year in high school that she performed her work before an audience. She attended her first open-mic night as a freshman in college with no idea that she would go on to co-host Warm Wednesdays, the longest running weekly open-mic venue in Baltimore for three years. She now hosts two open-mic venues: VERBATIMondays in Baltimore, Maryland and Busboys & Poets in Shirlington, Virginia. She has released three poetry CDS, appeared on Centric’s Lyric Café, served as the host of Onemic.tv Online, founded A Dose of Dupas production company, and is working on her first poetry book Beauty for Ashes: The Exchange.

SHAOLIN JAZZ – The 37th Chamber, the brainchild of Gerald Watson and DJ 2-Tone Jones, is a specialty mixtape project that has 2-Tone artfully blending the acapellas of rappers from the Wu-Tang Clan with hand picked jazz instrumentals. The project is an extension of Watson’s The Classics Album Cover Art Exhibitions which were a series of art shows, 2-Tone both deejayed and produced the mixtapes for, that featured various album covers from target genres of music such as rap, rock, soul, and jazz. Watson developed the idea for SHAOLIN JAZZ while interviewing Logan Walters, a graphic designer who created a series of jazz inspired Wu-Tang album covers called Wu-Note. During the interview Watson created a line of questioning which led to Walters mentioning that he would be interested in designing the album cover art if a project like it ever existed. Watson then approached 2-Tone who was interested. He then circled back to Logan who of course was already down and SHAOLIN JAZZ was born. Musically and visually, SHAOLIN JAZZ embodies a unique mix of details. 2-Tone, a seasoned DJ, steps into the role of producer by crafting the right jazz instrumentals with the right vocals, cutting and mixing sounds and effects to create the right “feel” where needed, and even sampling and chopping up jazz tracks to create beats which have had many critically acclaimed beatsmiths, such as Jneiro Jarel, Wajeed, Oddisee, and Roddy Rod, giving 2-Tone the thumbs up.
Sharon J. Burton, based in the Washington, DC metro area, is a visual artist and independent curator. She is the Founder and Creative Director of The Artinista Art Advisory, which provides art consultancy services for professional women. She has also served as an art curator and/or consultant to a number of organizations. In addition to holding several degrees, Burton holds a certificate in Art History and will complete a professional certification in Art Business at New York University in 2012.

Bomani Armah is an artist, edu-tainer and “creative concierge”. Most known for his 2007 viral hit “Read a Book”, Bomani is a sought after performer, music producer and engineer. He is currently audio engineer at Urban-Intalek Studios, Washington DC's premiere boutique recording studio. He is the producer and co-host of The Even Place with Dr. Alvin Augustus Jones. As an educator he conducts seminars and facilitate workshops for grade school and college organizations focusing on songwriting and media literacy. In 2008 he released full length album, “Radio Friendly”, as well as chap book, “Circumlocution Vol II” in 2012. The founder of First Generation University, Shonda Goward, is passionate about first generation college students because she was one. Shonda attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an out-of-state student, and graduated with a double major in Journalism and Mass Communication and Political Science. However, being a first generation student definitely presented challenges that were vastly different than those of her peers. Upon completing a Master of Arts degree in English, Shonda began working in higher education as both a lecturer in writing, and admissions officer, and saw many students excited to be admitted to a university, but wholly unaware of what to do next or how to succeed in the classroom. First Generation University is a reflection of her personal commitment to giving first generation, and other non-traditional students, agency when it comes to their success. Michele L. Gray aka Michele Sometimes is a writer, an actress and comedian.performing under the name Michele Sometimes. Michele is one half of the "Brown Girls Comedy" duo, performing bi-weekly at Slim's Comedy Show hosted by Toni "Chicagoslim" Minor at Jin Soul Lounge. She has starred in area productions such as “…and you’re just not good enough” at The Fridge and the stageplay entititled “Virgil’s Law at Atlas Theater. She was recently featured in Marie Claire magazine examining women and ethnic identity in the workplace and is a blog contributor for Loop 21. Michele still finds time to nurture a strong facebook addiction and raise two young boys. She also recently acquired a grey and white tabby cat who she has named Tito the fattest Jackson for obvious reasons.
