Judaism and the Mosaic Law are not compatible with the New Covenant Christ came to bring
We examine how Christ’s healings during His earthly ministry served as proof that He alone could give the ultimate healing through the forgiveness of sins and everlasting life. We also learn from this passage that Jesus must be God since He knew the thoughts and hearts of the Scribes that were present (Matt. 9:4). We conclude from this that Jesus is Yahweh the “heart knower” from Jeremiah 17:9-10 (cf. 1 Cor. 4:5).
We spend time in this sermon laying out the truth of God’s eternal existence and the deity of Christ. We look at the “all things” statements in verse 6 and conclude that they are to be taken as literal and comprehensive. God alone is sovereign over history and His purposes stand. We end with a call from the book of Isaiah for all people to turn to God as well as the same call from the book of Acts. The true God cares about us and calls for us to know and serve Him.
Those who have been changed by God’s saving grace have a relationship with God which is characterized by love which comes from God. We love Him because He first loved us. In our applications we look at important texts in Jeremiah and elsewhere which reveal the need for humility and gratitude for God having made us a people.
We show how it was prophesied that the Messiah had to be truly man and truly God in one person (Isaiah 9:6; 11:1, 10). You can absolutely trust the One who “the winds and the seas obey.”
We point out numerous times that what Paul says here is advice about becoming married or staying single in a time when there was great distress. Paul holds a high view of marriage as seen in various places in his writings. In the sermon, we emphasize that whatever else we may be anxious about, all Christians must be concerned about holiness and pure devotion to the Lord. We warn against various false teachings which have arisen in church history which are based on misuse of Paul’s teachings in this section.
Paul shows a high regard for marriage. It seems unusual that Paul as a true apostle of Christ would give advice with the disclaimer that it would not be sin to go against his advice. We take on the difficult issues and explain various approaches and why, in the end, we cannot be certain about what prompted Paul’s advice. We do not have the previous correspondence from the Corinthians to Paul. 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 forthrightly tells us that whatever our marriage, work, or financial situation, we are to live as those in a world that is passing away. Our well-being is based on eternal promises rather than the matters of life which consume those who do not believe God’s promises.
We show biblically how Jesus sets the pattern for suffering followed by glory. Since the student is never greater than the master, we can conclude we must suffer prior to glory as well. Come and hear about the high cost of discipleship that all of Christ’s people must be willing to endure.
Christ has the authority to give His people the ultimate healing. We define this “ultimate” healing as the forgiveness of sins and the ensuing everlasting life.
Our status in the eyes of the world, whatever that might be, is nothing compared to the tremendous status upgrade we obtained by God’s grace when He saved us and made us slaves of Christ.
We are children of the King and that glorious truth does not depend on how important we were seen in the eyes of the world before our conversion. The corollary to this grand truth is that Christians must not bring worldly judgments of status into the church based on who they used to be. All the redeemed belong to Christ and partakers of God’s eternal promises. We are called into the fellowship of the Son!
Jesus’ miracles are designed to show the people of Israel and the world that He is the fulfillment of the messianic expectations found in Isaiah 35:5-6. Come and hear for yourself how Christ can make anyone “clean” and forever acceptable before a holy and righteous God.
The verses we cover in this sermon are by nature very difficult. We take each verse and each important issue that arises from it and explain what is clear, what is disputed and how what we can learn applies to our lives now. In this message taken from Matthew 7:28-29 and three other passages, we learn that even though the crowd is “amazed” at Jesus’ teaching, there is no evidence that they have saving faith. Jesus’ authority, revealed through His teaching, proved that He was the long-awaited prophet foretold by Moses in Deuteronomy 18:15, and it also proved that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah of Daniel 7 who has all authority in heaven and on the earth.
In this message taken from Matthew 7:24-27 we learn from Jesus that we must build our house upon the “rock.” We show that Jesus’ building metaphor is chosen deliberately since building a house requires planning. Jesus’ followers must be intentional about planning their eternal destiny upon the rock which is Christ Himself.
God’s love for His enemies is shown by Jesus being lifted up on the cross and bearing the full penalty for sin. With this is the promise that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. We either believe in Him or perish. Those who trust Christ alone will participate in future glory.
Marriage is ordained by God and we show this by citing Genesis 2:18 and 2:24-25. Marriage is good and was not instituted as a concession to immorality.
Ancient historians corroborate key elements of the gospel message, and predictive prophecies found in Scripture substantiate Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be. You can be certain of Christ’s resurrection.
To overcome temptation, we need to cling to rational truth and not allow the mysticism of the culture to seduce us into sinful behavior. Joseph resisted sin by citing objective reasons why he would not give in to the wife of his master who had trusted him. We cannot be separated from God’s love. Five verbs in the past tense are often called the “golden chain”: foreknew, predestined, called, justified, and glorified. Each one is about the certainty of God bringing each of His own into conformity to the image of Christ. They are in the past tense which here is proleptic—describing future certainty.

The futile reasonings of man-centered religion still reject the significance of Christ crucified. The main claim of this sermon is that there is no valid process whereby the wisdom of God will be popular with the world. This sermon emphasizes that since all who serve the Lord must not seek the approval of men in the fallen world system, Much of this message is about future reward, the contrast between those who know God through Christ and the many false religions of the world, and the need to be reconciled to God. Only those who know Christ and trust Him alone are reconciled to God. The world is not evolving into paradise on earth but is heading toward judgment.
In this text, Paul uses two rhetorical questions to highlight the problem with schisms based on personalities. Those who believed the gospel put their faith in Christ, not the personalities of preachers.
This sermon deals with the key reason that Paul used irony to describe the Corinthian church as "still of the flesh." They were making judgments about the relative value of various preachers which created "jealousy and strife." The term for strife is used nine times in the NT, all with negative connotations. Some were making claims that would not be made if they understood that they are no longer "merely human." Those in Christ are part of the redeemed family of God and have various gifts. Those who claim to be superior based on which preacher they follow are behaving and thinking as if they were in Adam rather than in Christ. Their slogans showed this confused thinking. In Luke, and elsewhere in the Bible, there were debates about who was the greatest. Those who come to Christ through the gospel already have received great honor as they are part of the family of God. When we compare gifts and make judgments about who is more or less important, we are in danger of bringing worldly status rivalry into the church. Some in Corinth made such judgments about Paul. The sermon ends with sharing the gospel based on 1 Corinthians 15:21, 22 and what it means to be in Adam where all die, or in Christ with the gift of eternal life.
Paul addresses those who did come to Christ (not lost in sin) that he “could not” address “as” spiritual people but as “people of the flesh.” This is ironic and not literal.

The older son is the focus of the end of the parable. The details of this include the father making a loving appeal to the older son as well. The end the parable as is left open. We do not know whether the father's appeal was heeded. The point is that God in Christ bore the shame, insults and mockery so that repentant sinners, (the found) are brought to life and given the joy of Messianic salvation. There is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents. It was necessary to rejoice. The main point of application concerns the Lord's Supper as a celebration of Messianic salvation. We also must remember not to make false judgments about those who come to Christ. The Lord's Supper is a table fellowship for the found.
The weeping of more Israelite mothers in Bethlehem over the murder of their babies was an event that Matthew understood as one day coming to an end when Jesus restores the kingdom to Israel. In this message I prove that every believer in Christ will be a partaker in the glorious kingdom that Christ will establish at His return.
The crucifixion of Christ and His bodily resurrection is objective truth and preached to all, including civil authorities. God’s wisdom was “predestined before the ages.” Those who know Christ through the gospel (all believers ) are destined to glory is assured by the promises of God.
The “wisdom of this age” is foolishness because it rejects God’s revealed wisdom which is “Christ crucified.” The evil rulers of this age are human rulers and the spiritual powers of darkness which are in the heavenly places. They are “coming to nothing” because they face God’s judgment.

Nevertheless Paul resolved to focus on “Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” Sadly, many today are concerned about other matters and refuse to clearly proclaim Christ.
Jesus alone fits all of the data concerning what was revealed about the Immanuel child in the book of Isaiah. It was necessary for the Son of God to become flesh through the virgin birth in order that we might have the forgiveness of sins.

abandoning the apostles’ doctrines is identical to abandoning the gospel of Christ. I explain how the apostles’ doctrines can be abandoned either by claiming they don’t speak for God, or by claiming that the apostles are not unique in their role as personal spokesmen for Christ.
God calls people to repent and turn to Christ. God has spoken to us through His Son in whom He is well-pleased. The seeker movement may attract people, but it is grounded in worldly philosophy and man-centered “wisdom” that is truly foolish and will ultimately be shown to be useless. The call for children in Christian homes to obey their parents is grounded in the command of God found in the 10 commandments. Honoring one’s parents means to esteem them and treat them with favor. When children dishonor their own parents, this is shameful and harmful.
God has chosen to reveal the mystery of New Covenant reality of Christ and the church through Christ’s apostles and prophets.
Husbands are exhorted by Paul and the apostles to engage in selfless love and attention to their wives. God is still keeping promises given to Abraham, David and through the prophets. There is an assured future Israel, but the time is not yet revealed.
Jesus brings forth a people who will be His sheep and bear His name. He will love them, keep them, and protect them. God’s visitation made all who believe on Christ a “people for the Name”!
That Jesus was raised with an imperishable body as the “first fruits” gives us hope and confidence that believers will also be raised with an imperishable body. Our hope is in the resurrected Christ.
What God did to prove once and for all that His Son is the unblemished Lamb who takes away the sins of the world
God promised salvation for gentiles and when He does so, we must not put some “yoke” on them that would bring them into bondage. We point to the gospel of grace.
God knows the heart and God has provided a way for sinful hearts to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus.
