I have learned more about God’s view of us, His children, in the 10 years I have been a dad than in the 30 years before. This week we will look at family relationships – mother, father, brother, sister – and connect the concept of God being our Heavenly Father.

A turning point in David’s life came near the end when he paved the way for the next king, his son, Solomon. David was able to appoint his successor and then graciously step aside and let him lead.

There are three scenes in the Bible where David deals with a man named Shimei. Shimei really hurt David. In these scenes, we learn about forgiving like we want God to forgive us.

Bathsheba, the beautiful woman next door, was pregnant. Uriah, her husband, the soldier, was dead. David, King of Israel, was responsible. For sure, this was a turning point in David’s life. But I want to focus on the rest of the story. God loved David too much to let him wallow in sin without trying to change his life. So, God sent the prophet Nathan to challenge David to face what he had done and change.

Nathan was the right person.
Nathan confronted an issue that really mattered.
Nathan went alone.
Nathan confronted in God’s timing.
Nathan went with the facts.
Nathan went with careful words.

This is a great section of the Bible, not just because it’s an exciting story, but because there are important lessons about how we can face giants. We don’t face them often, but we all face threatening giants at times. When we do, it will be a turning point for us. Will we have courage, or will we be cowards? Will we show faith or fear?

This six-part series is called “David: Turning Points”. I did this series seven years ago, but I want to repeat it because 2021 will be a turning point in my life, and more importantly, for Central Christian Church. For six weeks, we look at turning points in the life of King David. David is called a man after God’s heart, not because he was perfect, but because he had a heart for God. By studying turning points in David’s life, some positive, some negative, we can learn how to face turning points in our lives.
Lesson #1 (January 1 & 3, 2021) – Accepting the Call

Mary doesn’t deserve our worship, but she certainly deserves great respect. The Bible says she was blessed. She is called “the mother of the Lord.” She was a very special woman who can teach us a lot about a mother’s love and Christian devotion.

We face a spiritual enemy who is very tricky and is out to destroy us. He’s called many names in the Bible: Satan, the devil, the adversary, Beelzebub, the Prince of Darkness, the accuser, the dragon. Jesus says in John 18:37: “I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.” Christians believe in absolute truth. We believe truth is deeply rooted in the character of God, revealed to us in Jesus Christ, and communicated clearly in the Bible.

1 Timothy 2:3 – 4: This is good and pleases God our Savior, Who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.

The most important question in life is, “What must I do to be saved? How can I be sure when I die, my sins are forgiven, and I have the promise of living forever in Heaven?”
When I was young, I learned a five-finger exercise that has stayed with me. We have to be careful not to put God in a box, demand everybody goes through the same experience we had. But it’s really hard to beat this formula. A person hears the gospel, believes in Jesus, repents of sin, confesses Jesus, and is baptized into Jesus. This lesson is about step #1; believe.

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 2:17: So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless—like chasing the wind.

Lesson #1 – January 3 & 5, 2020: “Knowledge Is Not Wisdom”
Big Idea: Knowledge without God is useless.
Key Verses: Ecclesiastes 1:16 – 18: I said to myself, “Look, I am wiser than any of the kings who ruled in Jerusalem before me. I have greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them.”
So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind. The greater my wisdom, the greater my grief. To increase knowledge only increases sorrow.

•Knowledge is desirable; pursue it.
•Knowledge without God is futile; beware of it.
•Godly wisdom is counterculture; practice it.

Jesus is the perfect gift, but many people won’t receive Him or will return Him.

It’s a symbol of hope. This world is covered in spiritual darkness, and people are groping to find their way. The qualities of light remind us of the impact Jesus still makes today.

So don’t be troubled or afraid.” God’s peace is more wonderful than the human mind can understand. In Jesus Christ, God offers a peace that amazes even the receiver of the gift. Jesus says about Himself in Mark 10:45: “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Some people want to see Jesus as a caring social worker or a thought-provoking teacher. But the main reason Jesus came to earth was to give His life as a ransom, so we could be free from the slavery of sin. The reason Samson’s life ended up a tragedy can be summed up in one word: pride. Samson’s ego got out of control and was the source of his downfall. The result was not something amazing like falling off the edge of a cliff, but just kind of a gradual slide down the slippery slope of sin.
Samson was too proud to be satisfied with Hebrew women. Samson was too proud to listen to his parents. Samson was too proud to accept defeat from the Philistines. Samson was too proud to depend on God for strength.
But we need to remember God can sometimes use our greatest failures for His glory. 2 Corinthians 12:10says, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” “Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.”

Samson had very strong blessings. He was born at a great time, to godly parents, and given amazing strength from God.
It is important for us to recognize God is the giver of our gifts and our strengths are to be used for His glory and not our own. When the blessed use their talents for the work of Jesus, the Body of Christ, the church, is lifted up and the whole world benefits. But it requires the humble admission all talent comes from God and it is to be used for Him.
