They discuss the challenges businesses face when choosing between marketing agencies that focus solely on implementation and those that provide strategic impact and measurable results. In the "Schmidt List" podcast, hosts Kurt Schmidt and Lucy Hinton explore the essential role of user experience (UX) and user research in creating successful digital products. Lucy Hinton, a UX consultant at Fathom Consulting, shares her deep experience designing digital and physical products. She highlights the importance of understanding user needs to align product functionalities with user expectations.

The conversation shifts to how organizations move from top-down design to customer-driven methods. Kurt uses the famous, though misattributed, Henry Ford's "faster horses" quote to underscore the importance of grasping user needs for true innovation. Lucy offers practical advice for those new to user research, emphasizing the need to learn users' broader contexts and environments through prototypes and usability tests.

They discuss the framework for the jobs, focusing on users' tasks rather than just their interactions with products. Lucy underlines the need to account for varied user environments and tailor designs accordingly. The discussion also covers the importance of competitor analysis without merely copying trends that may not suit the business.

Lucy discusses the significance of presenting research findings objectively, urging the removal of personal bias and the inclusion of diverse viewpoints. She differentiates general user feedback from usability testing, endorsing the latter to validate hypotheses through real interactions. They also discuss the importance of building rapport with users for genuine feedback and the risks of biased questioning.

In this installment of the Schmidt List, host Kurt Schmidt sits down with leadership expert Dave Pygon to dissect the role of self-awareness in ineffective leadership. Pygon, the mind behind Pygon One Consulting and author of "16 Principles and Strategies to Optimize Your Day," delves into the need for leaders to be aware of their values and the impacts of their leadership styles on their teams.

A critical theme of the episode is the need for clarity in setting expectations for team performance while moving away from the glorification of 'busyness.' Pygon champions a shift towards discussing positive, productive aspects of daily life, noting that negative talk can be demotivating and unhelpful.

The conversation turns to the pitfalls of micromanagement, pushing for a culture that empowers individuals rather than fostering dependency. Pygon encourages the practice of regular self-improvement through coaching and mentoring to enhance leadership skills like communication and mental resilience.

Kurt and Dave concur on the essentiality of adapting and staying open to change rather than remaining tethered to familiar, old-fashioned methods of operation. Pygon suggests that facing challenges with a positive outlook and communicating effectively can dramatically improve professional and personal outcomes.

Illustrating his book's principles, Pygon advises avoiding micromanagement by entrusting teams with tools and autonomy. He shares anecdotes that further demonstrate the positive impact of communication in both business and personal spheres.

Most of the episode discusses the importance of prioritizing and effectively managing time. Pygon shares his strategies for fitting high-priority tasks into busy schedules, emphasizing the need to compete with time to achieve better outcomes.

In this inspiring episode of "Schmidt List," host Kurt Schmidt welcomes Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal, a distinguished expert on resilience with a background at esteemed organizations like Cigna and Nike.

Their conversation revolves around the theme of resilience, with Dr. Taryn debunking the idea that time alone heals, and emphasizing active engagement in our healing processes.
Dr. Taryn introduces the novel concept of "cilliance," which signifies discovering our inherent strengths to navigate life’s adversities. The episode challenges the misconception that resilience is an external acquisition, advocating instead that it’s an innate trait we can cultivate, particularly by embracing vulnerability.

Highlighting "real-time resilience," Dr. Taryn discusses the ability to access resilience in the present, not only in hindsight. She suggests that resilience broadens our self-belief, encouraging individuals, especially women, to ambitiously pursue opportunities despite self-doubt.

Addressing "fake" against authentic resilience, Dr. Taryn criticizes the "fake it till you make it" approach, promoting a life vision backed by actionable steps. Resilience is metaphorically described as a muscle powered by our dreams, which we need to actively develop.
The power of words and expressions, such as how a smile can influence our sense of happiness, is also covered, underscoring the significant impact our language choices have on our psychological states.

The duo discusses professional resilience, with Dr. Taryn advising on the importance of establishing boundaries in toxic work environments. A personal story of her handling a stressful parenting moment exemplifies resilience in action, as she decides to respond with composure rather than react with stress, influencing her son’s experiences positively.

Dr. Taryn clarifies that resilience is not about imperviousness but entails evolving through adversities by learning and integrating the experiences they grant us. Resilience encompasses a gamut of emotions, and effectively managing these emotions is key.

Resilience, as per Dr. Taryn, is intrinsic to humanity, a process involving the adoption of skills and practices. Despite personal challenges, including facing a stalker and living with undiagnosed dyslexia, she asserts resilience as a cornerstone for success in life and leadership.
In conclusion, Dr. Taryn points listeners to her resources, like her book "The Five Practices of Highly Resilient People," and the pair exchange accolades on their insights and the value of the discussion on the "Schmidt List" podcast.

In this informative episode of the "Schmidt List," host Kurt Schmidt has an enriching conversation with David Fritzinger, the CIO and experienced technology leader at Nystrom. David lends his insights into the crucial aspects of transitioning into a leadership role, emphasizing the necessity of understanding and cultivating relationships with team members to foster a thriving working environment.

David sheds light on the delicate balance leaders require to produce immediate results while appreciating the organization's history and pinpointing opportunities for meaningful contributions. He highlights the power of vulnerability in leadership, advocating for personal connections as the foundation of professional success. These sentiments are echoed by Kurt, who underscores the importance of recognizing individual career aspirations and reconciling diverse viewpoints within a team.

Drawing on wisdom gained from his military background, David speaks to the essence of leadership — guiding teams comprising diverse levels of experience and expertise. He candidly discusses the duality leaders face in managing the triumphs and challenges inherent in their role, the latter being critical in unlocking a team's potential.

The conversation seamlessly pivots to the concept of trust, which both Kurt and David agree is a key component of effective leadership. Fritzinger advises that building trust requires consistent, personal interactions and the integrity of following through on promises. He stresses the distinction between liking someone and being able to work productively with them, pointing out that mutual respect and shared objectives are paramount for constructive collaboration.

On entrepreneurship, they address the nuance between strategy and planning within an organization. Here, David offers a pragmatic view of valuing incremental steps over grand gestures, illustrating the blend of strategic thinking and tactical action required in business. He expounds on crafting strategy through a forward-thinking lens followed by backward planning.

Kurt and David then delve into leaders' intrinsic challenges when joining a new team. They highlight the urgency for leaders to absorb the company's existing dynamics while embracing humility to acknowledge gaps in their understanding. Their discussion underscores the significance of addressing immediate, more minor issues to gain trust and contemplating strategic shifts for long-term impact.

Leaders must address dissent swiftly, decode the underlying causes, and openly communicate with their team, involving them in early decision-making stages. They share an anecdote of a CFO's preference to be part of the process rather than receiving a completed initiative, reinforcing the "bring people along for the ride" philosophy.

David encourages listeners to connect via LinkedIn for further engagement on his work. The episode concludes with both Kurt and David expressing satisfaction with their dialogue, suggesting the potential for future discussions.

The episode, rich with leadership wisdom, solidifies the theme that the art of leadership lies in fostering a sense of belonging, trust, and collaboration among team members, thereby paving the way for an empowered and inclusive organizational culture. Subsequently, the "Schmidt List" audience gains practical guidelines for navigating the complex landscape of modern leadership.

Recently, I had an engaging conversation with David Glaza about the transformation within retail media, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

From our dialogue, it's clear that the industry is not just surviving, but thriving and evolving in exciting ways. David emphasized how mobile and video content have become crucial in retail marketing, reshaping the way we engage with consumers.

In addition, he highlighted the growing influence of social media figures in shaping purchasing decisions. It's fascinating to see how these influencers, once mere consumers like us, are now at the forefront of marketing trends.

But it doesn't stop there. AI applications have also played a significant role in personalizing customer experiences, making shopping more convenient and enjoyable. These innovations can make or break a brand in today's highly competitive market. Our discussion also touched upon the giants of the industry - Amazon, Walmart, and Instacart. These companies are setting the pace with their user-friendly platforms and innovative influencer marketing strategies. They're showing us that adapting and innovating is the key to staying relevant in this rapidly changing landscape.

We also explored emerging trends such as direct-to-consumer selling through platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Interestingly, even regional grocers are launching first-party retail media platforms to better connect with customers. And let's not forget the rise of 'ghost kitchens' and the revival of malls as experiential destinations for younger shoppers. Moreover, data gathering and consumer engagement have become the backbone of personalized marketing strategies.
Companies use digital tools to enhance customer experience, making shopping more than just a transaction but an engaging and personalized journey.

Finally, we discussed David's agency, which is at the forefront of these changes.
Please let me know if you're interested in learning more about their work. I'm sure David would love to connect and share his insights. Navigating this shift might seem challenging, but it's also an opportunity for growth and innovation. Let's embrace it together!

In this encore episode of The Schmidt List from 2018, I interview David Hussman, founder of DevJam, speaker, author, and software development expert. As I look back on my past 200+ episodes, I can't help but feel a sense of joy and nostalgia. Remastering some of my favorite episodes has been an absolute pleasure, and I'm excited to share them with all of you. It's fascinating to see how much has remained the same in software development since this episode (No.016) was published in 2018. It's a great reminder of the timeless principles that guide our work.

During our discussion, we discussed the changes in software development that have taken place in the last 20 years and what direction it is going towards, specifically regarding the transition from project-centered to product-centered development. David provided valuable advice on coaching teams to adopt a product-focused approach, especially in larger companies.

Highlights:
* Analyzing and presenting data visually can help teams discover new trends. This approach makes it easier to spot trends and can inspire fresh ideas. * Value-aligning teams with customer impact and encouraging developers to interact with customers to understand their needs better. * Don't rely solely on technological advances or the competition's roadmap for product improvement ideas. * To optimize productivity and minimize handoffs prioritize teamwork. * Executives should encourage knowledge-sharing and take responsibility for desired behavior. * Executives should encourage and motivate teams to communicate. * Communication is vital in software development, especially in large organizations with siloed teams. * Customer journey mapping and impact-driven development can help understand the effect of features and investments.

According to David, as a technology or design leader, admitting mistakes is the most crucial characteristic. It's essential to be transparent and accountable for your actions; this willingness to take responsibility can inspire trust and respect from your team. So, feel free to own up to your mistakes and work towards finding solutions. It's all part of being a strong and effective leader.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have crossed paths with David, as I gained a great deal of knowledge from him in the short time I spent with him, and I will always cherish the lessons he imparted to me.

In a North American 2020 study, 75% of employees reported that their immediate superior is the most stressful part of their job.

And another 2020 study, 76% of employees described their boss as toxic.

How many studies do we have to see what a majority of leadership styles today aren't working?

Poor leadership practices never start with one person. Bad practices snowball after years of being afraid of other leaders with the same traits, or assuming that being tough is the only way to alleviate stress and pressure.

Unfortunately, it has the opposite effect.

Being a leader today is HARD. And the only remedy is to see the scary stuff in ourselves we don't like and be kind and productive about what we want to change in ourselves.

How do you create a legacy you'll be proud of at the end of every day? And where do you start?

There is much hype around entrepreneurship.
It's nearly impossible to consume social media without someone promoting a "side hustle." Many people try to convince you that it answers all your problems. However, entrepreneurship isn't for everyone. It's not even appropriate for most people. If you're thinking about starting your own business, you must ask yourself some tough questions and be honest.

The truth is that entrepreneurship is hard. It's not all about making money and being a boss. There are many sacrifices that you have to make, and it can be very stressful. If you're not prepared to take on more stress in your life, then entrepreneurship isn't for you. You need to be able to embrace stress and work long hours if you want to be successful.

In this episode, I share a few questions you should ask yourself before leaping.

What makes a leader trustworthy?

People trust leaders who are dependable, honest, and transparent. To be a trustworthy leader, you must also care about meeting the needs of your team members.

Some leaders are trustworthy because they earn trust through what they do, how they treat people, and what values guide them. Other leaders are responsible for their character—honor, integrity, empathy, dependability. These two qualities aren't mutually exclusive; I believe the latter is a prerequisite for the former.

A leader's actions must be aligned with their values for their people to be able to trust them. There are countless examples of leaders who talk about honesty and integrity but then act dishonest or unethical.

There's been a lot of talk about the "Great Resignation." More and more talented young professionals choose to leave their careers before even pursuing work they find fulfilling.

69% of millennials said they felt stressed about their time spent working away from home, and 54% said they wanted to spend more time at home.

Another primary reason is job security. According to a recent study, only 22% of millennials feel that their current jobs guarantee long-term security.

Who is in charge of your life?

Success is not an accident. It's the result of hard work and your ability to cultivate your network.

But first, we must start with you: Who am I? What does success mean for me on this day or at any given time in life—work-related or otherwise? One of the most basic principles of success is this: know yourself. Before we can help others or make significant progress in our careers, we must first determine what drives us and what works for us.

What does antifragility mean?

Antifragility is a concept originally coined by Nassim Taleb, and its definition is deceptively simple: it means "the opposite of fragility." In other words, antifragile gets stronger when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors. You are an antifragile system if you become stronger when everything around you is getting chaotic.

Antifragility has been used in several industries. The term "antifragile" was first applied to software development by Google's director of engineering, Ray Kurzweil. He dubbed the technique "antifragile programming," describing it as an approach in which programmers embrace uncertainty and chaos by building systems that thrive on change with no surprises (my emphasis).

The antifragility concept has also been applied to marketing, finance, architecture, engineering, healthcare policy, governance, genetics, and biology.

Imagine if your team is functioning as a single unit.

In this ideal state, your teammates are invested in one another's success. They share both their successes and failures with each other, openly and with trust. They welcome others' input and criticism. They listen to new ideas, even if they're outside their comfort zone.

It's a nice thought – a team that truly works together towards a shared goal, where each member feels safe enough to take risks and explore their path without being judged or put down by others. But how do you create this kind of team?

The good news is that psychological safety can be learned by feeling safe enough to take risks and be vulnerable.

Many people are caught in the trap of finding a balance between their personal and professional lives. This pressure is prevalent in corporate America, where workers often feel as if they are being pulled in multiple directions every day. Parents struggle to balance work and family, leaving little time for friends or hobbies outside their home. While this type of schedule may be impossible to avoid entirely, those who manage their time well live longer and have healthier overall lifestyles that benefit them both at work and home.

One of the reasons people who find balance in their lives are healthier overall is that they have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. A balanced individual also tends to be happier, which leads to less depression and stress. When a person is more comfortable at home, they tend to perform better at work, which results in more promotions and pay raises. This cycle of success can be highly beneficial in the workplace, where a person with higher-level management skills is more productive.

While finding a balance between work and personal life may seem like an impossible task to those unfamiliar with time-management techniques, there are ways to make this balance more realistic. Making small changes such as leaving work on time every day, setting deadlines and sticking to them, taking lunch breaks instead of eating at the desk, or even scheduling one night a week to be “date night” with your significant other can help you achieve a healthier lifestyle.

If you feel like your life is always on the go and if you're stressed out right now because of it, then join Sarah Engstrom and me as we share some practical advice on how to create more balance in your work and life!

We’ll discuss important topics such as “what makes a great founder?” and “how do you build an effective team?” In addition, John will share his expert advice on what investors are looking to see and how startups can best position themselves to win over their interests.

And if that’s not enough, John will be giving away some of his top secrets on what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. No startup journey is without its challenges. But with the right mindset, you can rise above them all!

Join Juliet Fox, Co-Mastermind of The Sisterhood of Technology Professionals, and me as we discuss this important topic!

Why is it important? Before COVID, women were about 47% of the workforce. Women in tech jobs are only 26% of the workforce, and that number is drastically lower for African-American women (3%), Asian women (6%), and Latinx women (2%). Now, due to COVID, one in four women are contemplating leaving the workforce altogether.

Now, more than ever, we MUST learn to better support women in technology.
