Christian Zyp interviews Kevin Martin about the 18th Anniversary of the Lobby DVD Shop on Whyte Ave in Edmonton, Alberta. In an age of streaming, The Lobby continues to exist in spite of the evolution of how we consume media. We discuss the store, the evolution of media, DEDfest and the future release of THE LAST VIDEO STORE.
Christian Zyp interviews film historian/director Jason Pichonsky about the film THE AMITYVILLE CURSE from Canadian International Pictures. Jason did the commentary track on this release giving a tonne of insight into the film.

He dreams of NYU, where he’ll be mentored by a grateful Todd Solondz. But for Lawrence, who delivers every statement with utter certainty, this isn’t a mere dream: it’s locked in — as long as he can make thousands of dollars working part-time at his local video store.
Lindsey Campbell and Mark Davies examine another film funded by Telefilm to see if it worth appreciating. This time it's Sook-Yin Lee's film OCTAVIO IS DEAD. A cryptic tale with no lack of sexual undertones, Octavio is Dead! follows Tyler (Sarah Gadon) on an adventure of self-discovery.
In OCTAVIO IS DEAD Tyler escapes her overbearing mother (Rosanna Arquette) and travels to the rich and surreal world of her deceased father, Octavio (Raoul Trujillo), a father she never knew. She discovers that “the past is never dead” as she navigates her own sexual identity and the occult. Her ability to know the difference between fantasy and reality becomes an obstacle for Tyler, and she speaks to her late father who tells her that “you can’t hide forever.”

Jack Tuller has a plan. Twenty-five years earlier, the musician was given six months to live. But he lasted 25 years, until taking a turn for the worse. This predicament propels Jack on a quest to reconcile with his mother, find his biological father, and prepare his exit strategy. Jack’s best friend documents his three-year quest to die a happy man, culminating in a permanent going-away party.

THE COLOUR OF INK uncovers the mystery and power of our oldest medium through the eyes of Jason Logan, a Toronto inkmaker. Harvesting colours from the natural world—weeds, berries, bark, flowers, rocks, rust—he makes ink from just about anything. Ink is our primal medium. It has always been with us, inscribing the evolution of humanity. Working with ingredients foraged in the wild, Jason sends custom-made inks to an eclectic range of artists around the world, from a New Yorker cartoonist to a Japanese calligrapher. As the inks take on a life of their own, his playful alchemy paints a story of colour that reconnects us to the earth and returns us to a childlike sense of wonder.

DROP THE NEEDLE is is the story of Play De Record. In August 1990, a record store opened on Yonge St. in Toronto that quickly began serving the needs of college radio and DJs who spun new sounds far from the mainstream. Through the contagious work ethic and guidance of founder Eugene Tam, organically it became the hub for “Dance” music and the genres which emerged from under that umbrella, fueling and fostering Hip-Hop and Electronic culture. Today, its impact today on Toronto and by extension Canada is without question.

in GOLDEN DELICIOUS, Everyone wants something from high school senior Jake: his father ie pushing him to try out for the basketball team and his girlfriend wants to take their relationship to the next level. But it’s not until Aleks, an openly gay teen with a love for basketball, moves in across the street that Jake begins to recognize his own desires. To get closer to Aleks, Jake devotes himself to making the basketball team only to realize it’s not basketball he really wants. Distraught and confused, Jake pulls away until he’s finally outed as gay. With the truth in the open, Jake and his father come to terms with the reality of their relationship and expectations for each other.

This study of an artist and her work gives us some understanding of the trauma experienced by Canada’s Indigenous people in the Indian Residential School system, of its enduring effects on the children of survivors, and of one woman’s journey to recover what was lost: dignity, identity, and voice.

GIRLS WITH GUTS explores post-modern feminism through interviews with primarily Vancouver area Canadian horror movie directors. In Carol Clover’s seminal academic paper on feminism in slasher movies (which ended up in her book “Men, Women
and Chainsaws”), she suggested what was original viewed as a misogynistic format was actually a much more subversive feminist arena with final girls emasculating the killer male force in the narratives. Now we get to see how far that path goes deep into the dark genre woods, with a coven of filmmakers that are conjuring up some very sick and terrific s**t, as it’s all murder, guts, and fun with this punk-style documentary.

Mark Davies interviews Tim Mackenzie-Smith (director/producer) about his documentary GETTING IT BACK: THE STORY OF CYMANDE which is featured as part of the 19th edition of the Calgary Underground FIlm Festival 2022.
Cymande are the unsung heroes of hip hop, disco and a host of other genres, whose message of peace, love and funk sailed beyond Britain's shores and helped shape music for five decades. Long after they stopped playing, the music played on, so they returned to play some more.
In the racially turbulent UK of the early ‘70s, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande – with the dove as their symbol – combined jazz, funk, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul, MC Solaar to The Fugees, the Dove had spread Cymande's message far and wide, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story. Lucas Anders interviews Clay Tatum about his film THE CIVIL DEAD which is featured as part of the Calgary Underground Film Festival 2022.
In the film, a misanthropic struggling photographer just wants to watch TV and eat candy while his wife is out of town. While taking photos out in a park, Clay happens upon his long-lost friend, Whit. After a night of catching up, Whit discloses an unsettling secret to Clay, which puts a strain on his marriage and causes him to question his own sanity.

SuperGrid is a 2018 Canadian post-apocalyptic directed by Lowell Dean, who previously directed horror-comedies WolfCop and AnotherWolfCop. In a future where a plague has infected much of the population, two brothers are tasked with retrieving a mysterious package by traveling to Canada, which mining conglomerates have turned into a wasteland. Two brothers must travel the same road that claimed their sister's life in their quest to deliver mysterious cargo that they received to its proper destination. En route they must contend with road pirates, rebel gangs, and each other.
THE KILLING OF PHILLIP BOURDEAU is the story of a death that tore apart the Nova Scotia community of Isle Madame, a postcard-perfect collection of Acadian fishing villages off the coast of Cape Breton Island. Phillip Boudreau, a local man known for poaching lobsters, was killed by fishermen in a crime the media dubbed “murder for lobster,” which made international headlines seven years ago. But as anyone from the area will tell you, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Director Megan Wennberg unpacks a complicated and tangled web of blame in The Killing of Phillip Boudreau. The film looks at Boudreau himself, the challenges of policing this area and the role the community played as a whole: everyone knew there was a problem, but no one did anything before it was too late.
