Let’s talk choir culture! Consultant, author, and educator Allison Russo has dedicated her career to creating more ethical and effective arts learning spaces. She has a BM from Ithaca College and an MM from Boston University, both in Music Education. As an elementary band teacher and non-profit arts leader, Allison has designed and delivered music programming to thousands of students and teachers. She has presented at state and regional conferences, colleges, and public schools on topics including ethical classroom culture, trauma-informed care, and gender equity in jazz education.
Allison founded The Critical Good, an arts education consultancy in 2021, where she facilitates the creation of ground-up and equity-focused strategic plans for the arts departments of schools and nonprofits. She is also a graduate course facilitator for the Longy School of Music at Bard College, a collaborator with consulting firm WolfBrown, and freelance grant writer. She envisions a world where arts education is boundless, universally accessible, and joyful for all.

Let’s talk about building thriving middle school choirs through authentic relationships, developing a culture of positivity, and keeping it FUN while creating monster musicians (Jacobs’ phrase in lieu of the more stuffy “independent musicianship” )
Meet Erik Jacobs, a choir director at Willard Middle School in Aldie, VA where he co-directs the Wildcat Chorus program which has over 400 singers in six different choirs. Prior to his current position, Jacobs was the choir director at J. Michael Lunsford Middle School in South Riding, VA. Both schools have been designated Blue Ribbon Schools of Musical Excellence consecutively by the Virginia Music Educator’s Association. Before his work in Loudoun County, Jacobs began his choral teaching career in Prince William County. Prior to becoming a choral music educator, Jacobs was an active touring musician, releasing two albums and touring with two of his own music projects: the Po’Boys Brass Band and ROC City Stompers.

Kevin Boushel is a conductor and music educator based in Dublin, Ireland. He is the Chamber Choir Director and a Government of Ireland Scholar at Dublin City University where he is pursuing a PhD under the supervision of Dr Barbara Dignam. In 2022 he was appointed Associate Conductor of the University College Dublin School of Music where he works with the UCD Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Choir. Kevin has delivered music programmes to students of all ages and abilities, from kindergarten to adult education. As a conductor, he has worked with collegiate ensembles, workplace choirs, community choirs, children’s groups, and semi-professional ensembles. He has presented his research at the national conferences of the American Choral Directors' Association, the Society for Music Theory, and the Society for Musicology in Ireland. Kevin is also a fluent Irish-language speaker and language rights activist. He served on the executive board of the Gaelic League in Ireland, and hosted a weekend show on choral music on Dublin's Irish-language radio station.
In this episode we talk about Irish choral music and culture, multi-culuralism, muli-lingualism, coalition-building, and even anti-racist action. Lots to learn, hear, and implement. Can’t wait to hear what you think!

And in May, I got to go on tour as the “artistic advisor” with Clemson University Singers, under the direction of Dr. Anthony Bernarducci, as they traveled to London, Cambridge, Canterbury, Rouen, and Paris with Perform International.
In this episode, you’ll hear from singers of all backgrounds - performing arts, engineering, history, and more! - as they answer their most memorable tour moments. We recorded this while waiting in line to go up the Eiffel Tower on their last full day in Paris before heading back to the States.

Meet loop pedal violist, composer, and educator Kathryn Patricia Cobbler. Hailing from Canada’s Capital region, Cobbler has crafted a singular niche in improvisation and classical performance. She obsesses over creating uniquely arresting soundscapes, whether in solo recitals, composing for theatre, performing at art installations, and more.
For Cobbler, “performing music is painting with sound.” Her goal, especially in her variety of interactive concerts and workshops, is to “inspire audiences to be able to dive into their own life stories and explore the realm of creativity.”

Vocal pedagogy - the study of the art (and science) of voice teaching - can sound a bit intimidating, but not in this episode! Get your note-taking tools ready - this episode is jammed full of tips, tools, ideas, techniques, and terminology that you can immediately implement with your singers (and use to educate your community and build value). Using these ideas, you will help your singers find their most confident, capable, and technically sound expression of their vocal instrument - and have a lot of fun in the process.
Meet our guest, Vietnamese-American conductor Francis Cathlina, D.M.A. Dr. Cathlina serves as Director of Choral Activities at the University of Memphis. He guides a comprehensive Choral Program of five ensembles through administrative leadership and vision; he leads the doctoral and master’s choral conducting program and mentors undergraduate students, and he conducts the University Singers (flagship SATB choir) and Mazi (SSAA choir). Dr. Cathlina’s work with choral ensembles has garnered national recognition at the university and high school levels. His scholarship surrounding vocal pedagogy has been published in ACDA’s Choral Journal. Dr. Cathlina holds a D.M.A. in choral conducting with a vocal pedagogy cognate from the University of North Texas, an M.M. in choral conducting from Michigan State University, and a B.M.E. from Baylor University. Prior to his doctoral studies, he enjoyed a diverse career as a public school teacher in Texas.

In this episode, we learn all about the musical journey of Dr. William Powell, a Charles W. Barkley Endowed Professor and Director of Choral Activities at Auburn University. In this role, he teaches choral-related courses, and conducts the Chamber Choir, Men's Chorus, Concert Choir, and co-conducts the Gospel Choir with his wife, Dr. Rosephanye Powell. As we walk through his journey to choir, we explore the power of building culture, setting high expectations, and yet giving grace. Do you remember your first day in the classroom? Your first ever rehearsal? Maybe you're a pre-service teacher interested in knowing what it's like to transition from student teaching or college life into your first job. Meet 1st-year teacher, Kyle Feather who is allowing us to chronicle his adventures in year one. Mr. Feather serves as the assistant director of choirs at Denton High School in Denton, Texas. He is a recent graduate of the University of North Texas, majoring in Music Education and Vocal Performance. In addition to his time spent teaching Kyle works as a musical theater director as a part of the music ministry of TheChurchKC, conducts the adult choir at Faith United Presbyterian Church, and sings in pro-choirs across the DFW metroplex and around Kansas City. His personal mission and why for teaching is “To engage minds, open eyes, and lift spirits through the power of music.”

Whether you’re a young musician thinking about careers in music, an educator looking to enhance your space with music therapy, a potential candidate for the benefits of music therapy, or just interested in listening to an inspiring story, this episode features Kourtney Tigner, the board-certified music therapist for Hospice Savannah. Kourtney received her master's degree in music with an emphasis in music therapy from Texas Woman's University (2019) and her bachelor's degree in music from the University of Montevallo (2014). She is currently pursuing the certificate of Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapy (HPMT) from the Center for Music Therapy in End of Life Care. Kourtney finds her passion in providing comfort and compassion to those facing end-of-life issues and their families through music.

James Berry currently works as the Director of Fine Arts at Hilton Head Christian Academy. He began his musical career as a classically trained pianist but has branched out as a multi-instrumentalist into various styles of music, including directing a multitude of musical theater productions, but his favorite genre being jazz - and y’all, I’ve heard him live - he’s incredible! Originally from Portland, Maine, and a graduate from Gordon College and Boise State University, Mr. Berry has 15+ years of music education experience and is the co-founder and camp director of the Hilton Head Jazz Camp, which attracts a world-class 20 full-time faculty and 110 aspiring jazz students from across the country every July.

The panel is being moderated by Dr. Emily Williams Burch, the coordinator of music education at the University of South Carolina - Aiken, the founding artistic director of RISE Chorales in Savannah, GA, and the host of the “Music (ed) Matters” podcast.
This session features an interactive panel discussion that will utilize action-based perspectives emphasized by diversity, social-emotional learning, and culturally-relevant pedagogy to apply to real-world classroom scenarios. Jasmine Edwards (she/her/hers) is a creative arts therapy coordinator working as a music therapist within a pediatric medical setting in New York City. Jasmine holds a Bachelor of Music in music therapy from Florida State University and a Master of Arts in music therapy from New York University. She has experience working in private practice, outpatient, school-based, and medical settings, and is trained in NICU-MT, First Sounds: Rhythm, Breath, Lullaby, and Austin Vocal Psychotherapy. Jasmine has a vested interest in integrating the tenets of cultural humility into music therapy clinical practice and pedagogy. She also has served as an adjunct faculty member at Howard University, New York University, Nazareth College, and Montclair State University.

A live recording from the ACDA National Retreat for Children’s and Youth Community Choir Directors - this past weekend in Tuscan, AZ. Alex Gartner and I presented our first session with concepts directly from our upcoming book. The session was called: Communicating Your Value: Car Sales, Choirs, and Everything in Between.
Every octavo is different, yet as music specialists, we have the tools we need to teach each song with ease - we know all the tricks to teach musical concepts and create a beautiful sound. Yet, when it comes to building support for these same choirs, sometimes our bag of tricks doesn’t run as deep. Because most of our degrees are in music, donning a business-like mindset in order to build support for our organizations can feel daunting. In this session, we step out of the classroom and into the community with confidence by exploring how to communicate your organization’s value to attract new supporters.

Dr. Jorgensen and Dr. McLain’s institution largely serves students from a region with underfunded and underserved school districts, resulting in students entering college with little to no prior formal musical training or experiences. Based on Dr. McLain’s time spent working as an Academic Mentor for a competitive NCAA Division I football program, they have been developing and implementing educational scaffolding systems and inclusive pedagogy techniques at their institution to support these students so they not only develop the prerequisite skills traditionally expected of incoming music majors, but also the subsequent skills necessary for success as musicians or music educators after graduation. Dr. Frances Fonza Smith is the Director of Worship and Arts at Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Maryland and taught choir and sight singing at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in music education at the University of Missouri-Columbia, a Master’s degree in music education and a Doctorate in music education/choral conducting at Florida State University.
Smith taught choral music at the middle school and high school levels in Kentucky for several years. Additionally, Dr. Smith served as Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of Choral Activities at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Her responsibilities included teaching music education courses, aural skills, choral conducting, supervising music education interns, and directing the Wittenberg choirs. Choirs under her direction have participated in state, regional, and national music festivals. Dr. Smith is an active singer, clinician, and adjudicator. A frequent guest conductor, she has conducted several honor, public school, and church choirs. Her research interests are community partnerships, healthy singing in Gospel music, and tone building strategies used in the choral classroom.

Since that time, the chorus has been hailed as “splendid,” “articulate,” “soaring,” and “virtuosic.” He and the chorus were awarded a 2021 GRAMMY for Best Choral Performance for their recording Richard Danielpour: The Passion of Yeshua with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor JoAnn Falletta. What started as a search for finding the “right” terminology lead to a deep and somewhat life-changing conversation with master conductor Dr. Stephen Sieck. Dr. Sieck was challenged by his students to rethink his personal goals in rehearsal which led him into all the research outside of music related to inclusivity. Dr. Sieck took his findings and shared some ways for us as directors and leaders to examine how and who we are actually welcoming into our classroom.
Dr. Sieck also takes the time in this episode to define words that may be new or foggy - let’s face the “fear of terms” and instead figure out how we can create a space and lead in a place that is culturally aware and representative.

Come with us as we explore aspects of the changing/expanding adolescent male singing voice through our examination of the physiology, psychology, and "phrustrations" of working with this stage of the developing singer. Strategies for working with these singers, positively including them in the choral rehearsal, and encouraging continued growth and exploration through the "storm and stress" of the voice change will be explored, augmented with recordings of voices from a child voice through early adolescence. This fun episode is a long one, so if you need to, feel free to break it up into two parts. The first, listening to the difference between a child’s voice and that of an almost adolescent just starting to demonstrate gaps and an expanded range. The second, which begins almost exactly at the halfway point, outlining tips for rehearsal and tools your singers can use to navigate through the uncertainty (and fun) of each day.

Adolescent Female voice expert, Dr. Lynne Gackle, walks us through the four phases of the female voice change. Not only does she provide helpful analysis and voice-placement tips, she provides examples of spoken and sung passages from women in the process. You’ll want to listen to this one all the way through as she drops absolutely GOLD along the way, sharing stories and changing lives. Something I can’t wait to start with my singers is her voice-tracking sheet. They offer our singers an opportunity for leadership, ownership, and understanding. What do Dr. Craig Hurley’s research and your singers’ musicality have in common - everything! In this episode, Dr. Hurley shares his incredible research into infusing expression and what he’s found about singer artistry while compiling data for his study. For those research lovers out there, we talk about data and how the study was set up, even where the research question came from (hint: thanks Robert Shaw and an article by Dr. Cornelia Yarbrough). Dr. Hymon’s Bio:
Dr. Marshaun R. Hymon currently serves as Program Manager and Regional Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) for Year Up. In this role, Marshaun works to "close the opportunity divide" by overseeing organizational performance and staff professional coaching. Additionally, in collaboration with the region’s DEI Leadership Teams, he works to create more inclusive spaces and equitable practices within the region. Most recently, Marshaun was invited to deliver a DEI training for the California All-State Educator’s Association conference, and was featured on the Los Angeles based Podcast, Motivation for Black People.
Prior to joining Year Up, he served as a Student Success Advisor in the office of Student Onboarding at Florida State College at Jacksonville, where he worked with students as they transitioned into post-secondary education. Marshaun began his career as a music educator, and has served in many capacities with the Tallahassee, Savannah and Jacksonville Children's Choir. Marshaun also served as a Director of Choral Activities for the Flagler County School District.
Outside of his current work with Year Up, Marshaun is the Principal Consultant for Hymon Consulting Group, LLC. He most recently finished a consulting contract with the Getty Museum & Trust where he develop equity-focused programming for their summer internship programs. He is now on contract with One Workplace supporting in developing organizational DEI strategy. Marshaun is an Assistant Professor at West Los Angeles College, where he teaches college, career and employment readiness courses. Dr. Hymon earned a Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education from Florida State University and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of West Florida. Marshaun received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of California, Los Angeles. His research interests are race in America, identity development and the impact of music on the schooling success of young Black men. Marshaun looks forward to presenting his research at the 2021 American Choral Directors Association National Conference.

Everyone goes through tough times and experiences hard things. Those are the moments that define us as we pick ourselves back up and keep going. They are the stories and bruises we come back stronger from. Originally, this interview, with the talented Robyn Lana of the Cincinnati Youth Choir, was simply her sharing the story of her health crisis and how she overcame the shock, treatment, and is now 100%. Then it hit me….Robyn’s health crisis is not unlike what we are all experiencing right now. She unexpectedly lost the ability to do what we love, to be in rehearsals, provide stellar concerts, and live life emerged in music. Her willingness to unpack the story of overcoming this health shock and crisis offers us tangible insight and suggestions for how we can all get through this tricky time and emerge stronger and better in the journey and on the other side.
