From the #bronx to the #poconos and all things in between. Laughing as we discuss the relevant, ridiculous, sweet and heavy hodge-podge of life!
As the kids say, "It's been a minute!" We're in the process of relocating our Podgecast studio - and to be honest, one of the Podgecast members hasn't been pulling his weight as far as topics etc. But it's all good, because within the next 30 days, there will be so, SO much to talk about. Thanks for sticking with us!
Yeah, yeah, yeah... we know... the idea of endings being beginnings is cliche. But DAMN, these last few months have really shown us the kind of exclamation point recent endings have been. Have a listen.
It's been a hectic few weeks, and we've needed some recouping - so we're offering a small recap of the last few weeks. Have a listen!
Oliver Coronado - a student who John had a number of years ago was always a great student, and even in high school - it was evident that this guy was wise beyond his years. He was definitely someone who could cut through the bullshit and at a very young age was able to see things for what they truly were. We caught up with Oliver for the latest Podgecast. Have a listen!
We're extending our break this week. We brought our dog to get put to sleep last week, and I have to tell you it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. It shook us - and we're just climbing out of this loss. We'll be back next week with a proper Podgecast. Thanks for hanging in there.
We got really bad news about our dog, Ella. John sent a quick message on our Podgecast stream to tell you about it. No crying, but it was damn close. Have a great holiday!
Yesterday was National Fast Food Day. I'd like to take credit and say it was with intention that we chose to talk about our love/hate affair with fast food, but that's simply untrue. But what IS true is Christina will often come up with these ideas and not have any idea how serendipitous things really are. But it happens more than you'd think. Have a listen!
Were we thrilled that Joe Biden won the election last week? Yes. Did we think it was going to be a slam dunk? We did. So while we were extremely happy that our guy won - not to mention a woman, and a person of color at that - is going to be the Vice President is both historic and something to be marveled at to be witnessing. We can't help but feel the sting of those record numbers who came out in SUPPORT of "you know who." We run the gamut of emotions, as usual, here at The Podgecast. Have a listen!
Both Christina and John avoided certain movies from their childhoods because they were deemed "too frightening." Well, this week, two of those films were conquered. For John, "Nightmare on Elm Street" haunted him. For Christina, it was "Child's Play." Listen to what these two adults who avoided two cheesy horror movies from the 1980s have to say about it!
It's very safe to say we miss Obama. In our quickest Podgecast yet, we discuss watching The Way I See It - the MSNBC documentary that just had us in tears from start to finish - about Pete Souza, the White House photographer under President Obama. When they say "you don't know what you got til it's gone," boy, this doc proves that. Only a week left and our national nightmare BETTER be over!
Back in 2013, maximum irony created a new phrasing surrounding the word, "BECAUSE." As in, "I LIKE THIS... BECAUSE, REASONS." It's ridiculous but managed to become extremely fashionable. And since one of the Podgecasters is extremely NOT fashionable, this never quite caught on. But we did manage to turn this ridiculous phrase into a spirited discussion about many different things from a delicious pork dinner to cancel culture. You know you want to listen!
One of the Podgecast folk loves horror films. The other is a big baby. Watching a horror movie a day all month long is tricky with said baby. That's not all this episode is about, however - it's also about what we consider real life horrors. (Like being chased by geese, for example...) Have a listen!
When working with wood, you always need to sand the edges. If not, you'll get splinters and the work will look shoddy. We've discovered that life is kind of like that as well. You can build the entire structure, but then you need to sand the edges. That's what's been happening lately. We've been "sanding" the "rough edges" of our lives. Have a listen to hear how we've been doing just that!
So on the Instagram, I ask another poster about notebook boxes. He was very helpful in my question and BAM - just like that we became pals on the internets. And this guy has so much going on! Engineer, fashion, geek-stuff, parenting, education... and then, one day, he casually tells me, "Oh, I ran for congress." WHAT? Yep! Oh you wanna hear all about it NOW, don't ya? Well, have a listen and you can!
THREE YEARS! We've been rocking this podcast! One hundred-fifty eight episodes! That's a LOT OF GABBING! It was three years ago that I asked Christina to come down to the basement and BAM, the Podgecast was born! This episode we reflect on how we've changed over the course of the three years. Have a listen to see how we've done!
If you grew up in the northeast in the 1980s, without a doubt you have either been to Action Park, or you saw commercials for this (in)famous "water park." The use of air quotes here is legit, because Action Park was really more of a real life Lord of the Flies - a free for all run by drunk, high, horny teenagers. The topic was explored thoroughly in the new documentary "Class Action Park" but Christina and John add their two cents to the discussion. Have a listen!
What does it mean to be "in the flow"? When we are embarking on something creative, something "non-traditional" we tend to overthink and over analyze and let our doubts get in the way of that wonderful creativity. Once you give yourself that permission, you find yourself being swept up in your creative endeavor... "in the flow." Time whips by... and maybe you surprise yourself! Cousin Elaina joins us from Seattle to talk about what it means to be "in the flow." Have a listen!
What happens when you are 100% certain that the purchase of an oatmeal cookie prevented a horrible, terrible accident? What if something told you, against judgement, "Buy that cookie." They're expensive, we're running late, we don't NEED a cookie, I just put my card away... all of the above were true... but still we bought the cookie. Something told us, just get it. And that intuition may have saved us from real harm. Have a listen!
Our guest on this week's Podgecast is someone we've known since 2012... Marcos De Los Santos. A former student of John's and current film student. In his scant twenty-something years is the heart and mind of a straight up baby-boomer. He loves old things, old music, old movies. We're banking on his huge success one day so we can exploit him for this episode. He's an awesome guy and we love him! Have a listen!
The phrase, "You can't see the forest for the trees..." means that we can't see a big picture idea because the little things are obscuring our vision. What if we can't see something we're expecting because something else has "sprung up" and it's preventing us from seeing it? This week's Podgecast is all about having a view we are expecting only to have the TRUTH show itself in its place. Have a listen, it'll all make sense. (BTW, one of us cries this episode... take a guess who!)
We've been seeing a lot more women taking ownership of their power in recent weeks - we're all for that here at the Podgecast. Whether it's standing up to a bully on the floor of the House of Representatives or changing a circuit breaker, young women are thriving in their power. (Not to mention it was a huge week for women in music!) Have a listen as Christina and John discuss the different ways women are capturing and using their power!
A crying fit at 6:45 in the morning led to this episode of The Podgecast. Christina is feeling all the feels as Emily is about to head off to college. When she came back to bed, she said, "This would make a great Podgecast." And it did. We were downstairs before 7:30 and we were recording. There's never any coincidences in Podgecast-land, we've been obsessively playing the game "Wingspan" for the last few weeks. And just like that, BAM! You got a theme! This one's a good one but a short one! Have a listen!
This kid! He's a teenager... he's heading in to HIGH SCHOOL! He's taller than both of us and he sounds like the clean shaven guy in the Oak Ridge Boys. (His, and Ethan's, voice is deep... listen for yourself.) But deep voice aside, he also is one of the most kid, caring and sensitive kids we've ever known - and we're not just saying that because we live with him. Have a listen to Ethan2020!
When kids are sent to their rooms, it's a "punishment." But if as adults we would GLADLY get sent to our room. We are noticing that adults currently are being sent to their rooms to "think about what they've done" and the problem is, when they come out, they HAVEN'T really thought about it, because they're still doing the same crap they've BEEN doing. Have a listen.
"The shadow" is a psychological term for everything we can’t see in ourselves. Working with your shadow isn't easy. We go to great lengths to protect our self-image. Denying any part of yourself is denying YOU. Have a listen as Christina and John discuss SHADOW WORK! #no filter #shadow #shadow work #clouds #stormy #wear a mask #crazy karens #jung #psychology #be mindful #triggers
Father's Day just passed, and would you believe that we here at the Podgecast discovered a THEME about what lessons a father can give his son (positive AND negative.) Of course it seems that what we watched this weekend just happened to fall on the negative side, but that doesn't mean we have to FOLLOW those lessons - in fact we can choose to follow our OWN path. Have a listen to the latest episode!
What is the answer to, "Where do you hold a high school graduation during a pandemic?" The answer in these parts: At the local NASCAR track. Admittedly, we were apprehensive at first, but it turned out to be quite the celebration! Our latest Podgecast we celebrate our graduate and talk about her journey as well as our own in getting her to this point. There ARE a few tears, as to be expected... but good tears! Have a listen!
You know how we love our themes here at the Podgecast. We noticed that a lot of people who have normally remained quiet are no longer being silent. People are doing a lot more "snapping out of it" and "Snapping Back." And the visual validation of TWO snapping turtles in two different parts of town the same day we had these conversations really hammered this idea home. Have a listen!
An emotional week, for sure. We marched in memoriam of George Floyd - whose life was snuffed out under the knee of a Minneapolis Police officer. Our family participated in the George Floyd Memorial March this past Monday, then we recorded a podcast about what we were feeling. We kept quiet on Tuesday, but we’re back at it today. In this hopeful hodgepodge of a podcast, we talk about what we can do to help. It’s a heavy, important topic. Stay safe. #blacklivesmatter #georgefloyd #sayhisname #ripgeorgefloyd
So what can we say about a guest who not only brings his own topic... but brings his own GRAPHIC!? That's pretty cool. (Just saying, future guests don't HAVE to make their own graphics...) So this guy, a long time listener to The Podgecast, came prepared to discuss all manners of "Opening Up" - from the economy opening back up, to opening up emotionally and mentally... he was all over the place and guess what? He got Christina to tear up! It's true! Have a listen to this episode of The Podgecast with special guest, Charlie Peeke!
Zulay and John worked together for years at Harry Truman High School in the Bronx, NY. Now she's an assistant principal at a small high school in the Bronx! We have a talk with Zulay about all things education and we may or may not veer into geek territory. Have a listen and a laugh with The Podgecast's special guest, Zulay Martinez!
OOF! This pandemic is making us all kindsa turned around. I'm forgetting what day it is! Anyway, sorry we're so late this week. Our topic this week is a true Podgecast on a multitude of ideas... but all centered around the idea of RUN. Have a listen!
Many people are feeling lost during this time of isolation and quarantine. What if you were isolating BY CHOICE? Well that's just what Duane and Rena Ose did over 30 years ago. They walked into a remote part of Alaska and have lived off the grid since. Until last year, that is. They were part of a reality/competition show called Win the Wilderness where six couples were in competition to win Duane and Rena's remote home. This got us to thinking... while we haven't minded being quarantined, would we want to live in that level of remote isolation? Have a listen to the latest Podgecast and think about how remote of a life you'd want!
Who genuinely loves clowns? No one. If you are a person who says you love clowns, you're full of baloney. That being said, this week's podcast started out as a way of diving into our fears - especially in the midst of a global pandemic. But it was soon discovered that most fears are just hiding something else. Such is the case of the documentary "Wrinkles the Clown." The film started as what seemed to be a nightmare only to be exposed as a nightmare in our minds - the nightmare that WE created. It's confusing... but have a listen and maybe it'll make sense.
Some people never know what they want to do when they grow up. Some people find out along the way. Some people, like the subject of the documentary CHEF FLYNN, knew from the beginning. Did he really know, though? Either way, Chef Flynn McGarry knew what he wanted to quite early on. Watch this documentary either before or after listening. No spoilers to be had, but it's definitely an interesting look at this young artist.
This week, we talk about the documentary College Behind Bars - a film which highlights the Bard Prison Initiative. A program which educates convicts in the New York prison system. The documentary shows the astounding transformation of the students enrolled in the program and how even though the graduates might still be in literal prison, there is no question they have been freed of their own mental prisons. Have a listen!
Tina Coletta-Quinn... friend to the Podgecast, but more importantly friend to Christina and John. Tina, who moved to PA from Brooklyn (hence one of the B's) has been friends with Christina (the other B - for Bronx!) for over 25 years! The two have seen ups and downs... but have remained close throughout! Tina talks about all manner of topics in her journey. Have a listen!
We did. We watched the Tiger King. It was part of our unintended "Cringe Fringe Binge" it paired like a fine wine with the astounding Unorthodox. OK more like eating a Twinkie after an expensive meal. But during this pandemic, we needed something that made us feel less nuts. And man, the Tiger King delivered! Watch both and then have a listen... minor spoilers, but we save the good stuff for you to watch.
Things are CRAZZZZZY! We try to make sense of a nutty time! Have a listen to this week's Pandemic Podgecast.
John met this week's guest in middle school. Then Christina met him in high school. (For New York City, those are pretty crazy odds. As the ride and song state, the world is indeed, small.) Thanks to social media, the three have been able to remain in contact and peek in on one another's lives. And what a life this guy is living! Police officer. Parent. Bomb squad. New Romance. Marriage. Parent AGAIN in his 40's and then soon after retirement and a new life in Florida. But as he tells us, he feels that he's only just begun. Strap in, folks! This Podgecast is over TWO HOURS, but as it was being recorded, time absolutely FLEW by. (Fun Fact - Two of the three people talking on this week's Podgecast took surreptitious pee breaks. Try to guess who and when!)
As usual, our theme presented itself to us this weekend. One of us went on a field trip to see someone famous, then a movie, then another movie... but the whole time, there was this theme of being INVISIBLE. In both positive and negative ways. Plus there's a pretty juicy revelation in this week's Podgecast. You HAVE to listen!
When someone is "ICED OUT" we say they're being kept out with intent. Sometimes we "ICE" people out emotionally. Sometimes you go to ice festivals two days in a row and after seeing that much ice, you're just plain "ICED OUT." This Podgecast is BOTH. But trust us, it's fun and short. Have a listen. Did we mention it's short?
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of..." Ohhhhh you guys are smart! You get the joke! But on a serious note, did you watch JLo and Shakira on the Superbowl? Can you believe JLo is 50??? We can't. So we had to talk about it. We also talked about how when we were kids, 50 looked so much older. Case in point: Blanche from The Golden Girls - she was 50 in 1985. But now that we're a couple of years away from being Golden Girls ourselves, we needed to process why! Why does 50 today look so different from the 50 of the past? Grab your ear trumpet and have a listen!
Who doesn't love a good rant? We all do, don't front. But who, after said rant, follows up with a spell of gratitude? Well, probably significantly less people do. One person that does is Christina. Hence the title of this week's Podgecast: Rantitudes. We're clever, right? #blessed
So one of the members of the Podgecast had a birthday this past weekend, and the OTHER member thought it would be a hoot to INTERVIEW the birthday boy. Have a listen to a fun and funny 90ish minutes where people ask John the burning questions, such as "Seriously, what's up with Gatsby?"
Life lessons were learned while John decided to take the bus for (less than) a week. Thousands of people make the same commute the same way every day, but we took our spin on it. Have a listen. (Guaranteed NO skipping this time!)
GAH! First off, when we record The Podgecast, our faithful Podgecast dog, Ella, always joins us in the basement. When we recorded this episode, she wanted nothing to do with it. We should have realized that was a bad sign. The entire episode sounds like Max Headroom. Lots of SKKKIIIIPPPING... sigh. Well we talked about award season and how this is our favorite time of the year for movies! Tons and tons of great movies! And the sort of "All Star" game is the Golden Globes. A rowdy precursor to the grand lady The Academy Awards. Have a listen! PPPPleasssssse?
New Year, New Vision... that's our motto here! It's the year 2020 and everyone's all about "VISION." Yeah, yeah, yeah... so are we. But! We're all about NEW vision. Not PERFECT vision! See! Have a listen! You'll be especially surprised! (especially one of you, when you discover that this week's episode is exactly 67 minutes and 22 seconds!)
This week has been a week of REPAIR and CHANGE. As usual, Christina and John turned the things that went on in their lives to life lessons. You know you wanna know how they did it THIS TIME! SO LISTEN! It'll be a Christmas present to your ears!
The global phenomenon is about to come to a conclusion. But MOST DEFINITELY not the end. Christina and John (alright, mostly John) talk about the different feelings this franchise has wrought upon his little boy psyche, and little boy and girl psyches around the world. Have a listen!
You don't do something... you feel bad about it. Until you don't. What happens when you stop feeling bad about that thing? Then you feel BAD about NOT feeling bad anymore, right? What happens when you find yourself NOT FEELING BAD about NOT FEELING BAD??? That's what Christina and John talk about in this week's Podgecast. Have a listen, we don't want you feeling bad!
The latest Martin Scorsese film is THREE AND A HALF HOURS. Do you think that's TOO LONG? How about holding on to things for years, sometimes DECADES longer than needed? So Christina and John in the latest Podgecast asked the question, “How long is TOO LONG?” Have a listen! (We've decided this episode is NOT TOO LONG!)
The theory goes like this: You are at your truest self at the age of ten. Old enough to choose what you're all about, but still young enough that the adult world hasn't squashed it out of you. Listen to this week's Podgecast as Christina and John discuss who they were at age ten and how far they have to go to get back!
Our excitement about not one, but TWO Bronx documentaries led us to dedicate a whole episode to WATCHING DOCS! (Note to self: Keep "Watchin' Docs" as a future episode title when people have forgotten about this one.) We went from the Bronx to California in our viewing of different documentaries. Each offering its own nuggets of insight and wisdom. Have a listen and if you can, watch some of these and have a chat with us about them!
Let's face it, October sucked. Well, for us it did. Health scares and crappy weather and schedules that were all over the joint. So we're ready for something NEW - hence NEWvember! Have a listen to what we're about this November.
ARGH! This was supposed to be a light and easygoing Podgecast, but a technical glitch (John's fault) where he didn't set the proper microphone setting caused the audio to come in through the cheesy computer mic. It WAS about our wacky and strange bosses. John thought he had a decent collection of horrible bosses, but Christina beat him hands down. Have a listen, it's a super short and funny episode!
Ya know how Christina and John find a topic and then slide the serious stuff in there? Well guess what! This is one of those episodes. Sure, we start out talking about the different experiences we have with cameras... but it then takes a (literally) dark turn! (Listen in and you'll know exactly what we mean.)
Do we know how to find a common theme and run with it! We talk about different forms of being TESTED - whether it's seeking entrance into a four-year college or going to a doctor and getting the results of a medical examination. Christina and John discuss all the ways we're being TESTED!
Leave it to us to mash two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TOPICS into one Podgecast. I guess it should be expected two years in, right? IT'S IN OUR NAME AFTER ALL! But as the title says, we talk about potholes and navigating them literally (and figuratively, huh?) As well as the multitude of animals we've had in our lives. Have a listen, won't you?
Our good friend Sandi Jallow stopped by and was our special guest on The Podgecast. We've been friends with Sandi for over a decade. When someone says a person is REAL, that is Sandi. She is an amazing source of honesty and sincerity and we are glad to have such an awesome guest on The Podgecast!
TWO YEARS! We've been doing this, officially, for two years! Who says we can't aimlessly ramble? But you know how it is... Christina and John have to turn it into an actual THEME. So listen to us talk about the changes that seemed to happen so quickly! And thank YOU for listening for these last two years!
Sunday was Christina's birthday! We had a low key weekend which involved meeting with friends, walking through a quaint PA town and eating very sensibly! Listen as Christina and John ramble on about Christina's special day!
A boundary is described as 1) a line that marks the limits of an area; a dividing line and 2) a limit of a subject or sphere of activity. Why do we have such difficulties with boundaries? Why do people struggle creating and maintaining healthy boundaries? Listen as Christina and John discuss their challenges with boundaries in this week's Podgecast!
College tours... who knew the barrage of emotions they would cause!?! Well, Christina and John spend a smidge over 2 hours talking about those feels - from pride to surprise to anger and sadness... we're all over the map here folks. Have a listen to see where we land!
It started out as a recap of our Summer Food Project, where each day a different person is in charge of planning and cooking dinner for the family. For the kids, it was the idea that things don't simply "appear" on the table, but there are people actively working to make things happen. Just because they don't SEE something happening doesn't mean that thing appears by magic. Of course, this morphed into so much more. Christina and John talk about how the myriad of unseen things have an effect on people, and how to recognize, and break, those if necessary!
ONE HUNDRED EPISODES! Can you believe it? We can't! As a treat, we took the family to the Houdini Museum. It has been on our radar for YEARS, but we've never actually gone. It DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Have a listen as Christina and John share their laughs of their visit to this really AMAZING place.
Seven minutes on seven movies in seven days. That's the idea. In seven days, we watched seven movies that were from 1990 and before, (except one, because, hey, we make the rules) and decided to reflect for seven minutes on each movie. They had to be films we'd seen WHEN THEY WERE RELEASED and then not 100 times afterward. That was a tall order! It was fascinating watching old movies that we hadn't seen in years with NEW, ADULT EYES. So this week is relatively short and actually pretty fun! Enjoy!
For Christina and John, this has been a summer of "Catchin' Up". Of course that means how WE can "CATCH UP" on stuff, but there's ANOTHER meaning, ya see? When stuff CATCHES UP to US! (See what we did there????) Listen to this week's #Podgecast as we talk about how we've been catching up... and how stuff has been catching up with US!
So there are some songs that just stick... I MEAN STICK in your head. Have you ever listened to the lyrics? These catchy ear-worms have some of the most toxic lyrics! In this week's Podgecast, Christina and John talk about some of the worst, most toxic songs that people sing while at the supermarket, convenience store, 5th-grade dance or dentist's office. Have a listen to some Pop Toxic!
When we say, "hot off the press," we MEAN IT! We recorded this and finished at 10:45 am. It is being uploaded at 11:30! CERTIFIED FRESH! It's our THIRD ANNIVERSARY! So we decided to have one of Christina's patented "RAMBLEVERSARIES" And my, does she ramble! (To be fair, John does pretty good as well!) No crying, and we do get serious for a moment or two, but there are definitely more laughs than the last 3 or 60 Podgecasts. It’s a HIGH ENERGY hodgepodge episode!. Happy Full Moon and happy three years of marriage!
What where you exposed to as a kid? Most definitions slant to a negative connotation. We had to dig a little to find even a POSITIVE definition of EXPOSURE, but there's art, music, the neighborhood, culture, parenting, ethnicity, food, generational issues...so many things that we're exposed to which shape us! Christina and John discuss how certain exposures can affect a person's whole life! #podcast #thepodgecast #exposure #frida #art #oneactivitysparkedawholetopic #music #thebronx #oldschool #food #education #upbringing #foxsighting #watercolors
Leave it to Christina and John to turn an awesome anniversary gift into a podcast ruminating on the idea of what makes art and how we can find beauty in the simplest things! Have a listen to this quick, fun episode!
Summertime! The time of two months of adventures and bonding. (Sometimes too much bonding. KIDDING!)Seriously, though, with a change of seasons comes a change of attitude...time to be grateful for where we are and excited for what’s ahead! It’s finally SUMMER!!!!
Levar Burton described the new Netflix film When They See Us as important as Roots was in the 1970's. We agree. The special series was heart-wrenching and gave insight to one of the most (in)famous crimes in recent New York history. The series focuses on "The Central Park 5" - Oprah has now began calling them "The Exonerated 5" as a symbol of taking back their innocence - and the part they REALLY played in the 1989 rape of the Central Park jogger. Be warned - there are some tears in this episode. And if you haven't watched When They See Us - what are you waiting for?
This week's Podgecast is another light one, the whole idea of KNOCK-OFFS. You know, you go to NYC and there's a dude with a raincoat who opens it up. If he's not flashing one kind of junk at you, then he's flashing another kind - knock-off merchandise. Watches, chains, etc. While some people would never settle for a knock-off, some people are OK with one. And then some people are just clueless. Which are you? Have a listen as Christina and John - no knockoffs here - talk all about the concept of KNOCK-OFFS!
Did you go on field trips as a kid? What was the big whoop? Well, if you grew up with us, you'd KNOW what the big whoop was! Have a listen as Christina and John talk all about their experiences with FIELD TRIPS! Both as younguns AND now as adults!
See what we did there? WE’RE #CLEVER-AF! In all seriousness, do you treat your liver kindly? If you say at any given time, “It’s five o’clock somewhere,” or, “It’s WINE-TIME,” chances are you don’t. But you think it’s only booze? NO, NO! It’s fats, salt, toxins on and in food... your liver is a workhorse, but you gotta give it a rest! Christina embarked on a NINE DAY LIVER CLEANSE and it was a WHOPPER. In fact, it left her CRAVING a Whopper. Were there some tears? Perhaps! But by the end of the 9 days, she was sleeping better, zero heartburn and more energy! Have a listen about this 9 day journey!
Baggage: past experiences or long-held ideas regarded as burdens and impediments. Why do we insist on carrying around the baggage we've carried for years, sometimes decades? And it shows up in the strangest of places. And what does this have to do with a trip to the "new to the area" supermarket Lidl? Only Christina and John can turn a trip to a new grocery store into a way of exorcising a whole bunch of baggage. Have a listen and put down yours!
It's that time of year again. Burnt toast and runny eggs in bed. Handwritten cards in crayon with glitter. Your "10 free hugs" weren't cashed in from last year, but you've got a whole new book! Christina and John visit the Dark Side of the Mom again! This time, instead of less glamorous and thankless... we talk full on crazy! Have a listen to The Dark Side of the Mom, PART TWO!
Imagine you just get off the bus in New York City... a man approaches you and lures you into betting money. And then guess what! You win! But then, you bet again and you bet even MORE but guess what! This time you lose. BIG! You just lost at THREE CARD MONTE. It's a classic game of misdirection. Politics is sort of like that. You think you're about to win, but then you don't. You've been misdirected and bamboozled and ultimately you always lose. The secret is understanding how the game is played... our Podgecast this week is looks at the documentary "Knock Down the House," about four women who take on the establishment and try to win their own versions of political three card monte. Heartbreaking and inspiration all in one 90 minute film.
It's been a long, cold, lonely winter. (That's some good metaphorin'! I should write that down!) This week, Christina and John did a whole bunch, but not enough of one thing to make a whole Podgecast about. So in true Podgecast fashion, you get a nice, healthy dose of what these two do best... finding the big ideas in the smallest of things!
If you don't know her, let us introduce you to Dr. Brené Brown. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston who has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. She is the author of numerous books and speaks at many different events on the above mentioned topics. More than that, her ideas have begun to reshape what we see as COURAGEOUS. And how vulnerability is actually the epitome of bravery! Her newest special, A Call to Courage, dropped on Netflix last week. Christina and John have a Brené Brown 101 discussion on this week's Podgecast. If you've never heard of her, have a listen! Then go watch A Call to Courage. (But ONLY after you listen! ;))
We're not going to shame you for using straws or drinking your coffee out of #Styrofoam cups. You can shame yourself for that. (KIDDING) But there ARE some small, common sense things we can each do to help the environment. (Obviously, buying a #Tesla is NOT one of them.) Christina and John talk about the different smallish ways we can help keep us in the planet's good graces.
The idea of "Hand-me-downs" is a solid, legitimate concept. You're giving something that can still be used - something that might still have life in it. Financially, a person might not be able to afford a variety of clothes. Maybe you don't want to contribute to damaging the environment when you hear that it takes over 700 gallons of water to grow the materials for one t-shirt. These are all great reasons... but there are other kinds of hand-me-downs. Emotional and behavioral hand-me-downs. But unlike a kid who's got no choice when his mom throws the neighbor's kid's old sweater him... you DO have a choice to put on those emotional and behavioral hand-me-downs. It's very possible they no longer fit or are way, WAY out of style. Listen in as Christina and John discuss the benefits and pitfalls of HAND-ME-DOWNS!
OK, so we thought last week's Podgecast was going to be our longest for a while. WRONG. (We had to take a dinner break between recordings, and that probably recharged us for the second half!)This week, Christina and John read a short, but amazing book called THE FOUR AGREEMENTS by don Miguel Ruiz. In it, we are instructed that one can live a peaceful, happy life by following these four agreements: 1) Be impeccable with your word. 2) Take nothing personally. 3) Assume nothing. 4) Always do your best.
So have a listen and see if your life can't be more peaceful when you follow the FOUR AGREEMENTS!
WHOOO. Our longest Podgecast to date. We've been talking a bunch about Captain Marvel. It was a really good movie, but it's beyond a simple movie. It's more about what the movie represents. What's more surprising is the backlash from people of the male persuasion. It's absolutely horrifying! So horrifying we had to call in an expert - Dr. Sandra Eckard - a local college professor who teaches, studies, writes about (you get the picture) education and popular culture. Have a listen (in pieces, trust us!) to this latest episode!
This new episode is a HIGHLY emotional one as Christina vents every possible feeling about being a caretaker living in the "Sandwich Generation." Rounding out the episode and fitting right in with the theme, we talk about the new season of Queer Eye and the recent visit from GraMary.
Was it a coincidence that Captain Marvel - arguably one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe - was released on International Women's Day? Probably not. Christina and John talk about International Women's Day and how it relates to the film. Turns out this super-short Podgecast will be leading up to a longer conversation in the next couple of weeks about women in super-hero films with Dr. Sandy Eckard! Have a listen. (Seriously... one of our shortest.)
We have a love hate relationship with Philadelphia. (Or PHILLY as some yokels call it...) It's a town that has a lot of good things going on, and some pretty shady things going on. One of the good things is the INTERNATIONAL FLOWER SHOW. Christina has been dying to get here for years. This year was the year! Listen as Christina and John ramble on about their adventure in the City of Brotherly Love and Identity Theft.
Oy. This Oscar ceremony started out awesome, but that ending was rough. The best part of it was having our pal Rashan call in and talk about his Oscar predictions with us, so that was a bonus. We all had good reasons for our picks, but ultimately, the Academy showed us how and why we are wrong. Sigh. Thank you, Rashan for hanging out with us!
Growing up, teachers didn't care about cultural sensitivity. They were strict but with that strictness they were at times insensitive, inappropriate and sometimes downright racist. When trying to break cycles, we are constantly questioning whether we are being culturally sensitive... and with that, do OUR OWN cultural limitations ever infringe on someone else (whether it be religion, sex, race, gender, etc.)? It's a tricky topic, but we're trying to be the best versions of ourselves as we can!
Do you have that one kitchen gadget that you can't live without? Do you have 473 kitchen gadgets that you simply can't live without? Christina and John hash out all the unnecessary kitchen gadgets they have in their home - which leads to mostly Christina teasing John about his hording tendencies. A short, light episode that has ZERO crying and lots of laughing.
John has been brewin' this topic for months, nay, YEARS! But Christina was all, "It's not ripe yet... it's not ready yet..." Pfft. Whatever. But this week, guess what?!?! The topic WAS RIPE! it WAS READY! So we talked about all manner of how people position themselves over and above other people and what utter nonsense it really is. From Fancy Nancy to The Great Gatsby to The Fyre Festival to our own lives... why do people feel the need to feel above others? Have a listen and find out!
We saw three movies in the last week - The M. Night Shyamalan Unbreakable/Split/Glass trilogy. I bet you think this is just a trilogy of superhero films, right? WRONG. Not in the hands of Christina and John. Have a listen as to how we realize at any given time we, ourselves can be broken, brave or a beast!
"We don't pick the themes. They pick us." Boy is that true. Christina and John talk about what started as a collection of films about prison which then led to (surprise!) the idea of what and how we imprison ourselves with our own misconceptions and outdated ideas. All this on the long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend - his 90th birthday! A true Podgecast!
What does it mean "Calm in the Chaos"? Simply put - why do we talk about "wonderful" experiences that might have taken place during a tumultuous time? Are they really wonderful experiences or was everything around it so bad in relation they just seemed wonderful? Christina and John talk about the different ways things may seem calm during chaos and how we are changing our views on them.
How many times have we heard about New Year's Resolutions? Decisions to not eat as much or exercise more, join a gym or stop biting your nails... Christina and John talk instead about the New Year's REVOLUTION. The idea that there are BIG SHIFTS on the near horizon. Are you a part of the REVOLUTION?
Holy Crap, our youngest is now A TEENAGER! When did this happen? Well, we know, it happened last week, it was his 13th birthday - but YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN! Ethan gives his take on life and his world, including a little thing called FORTNITE (old folk, or people with young kids, look it up!) Have a listen and HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM Christina and John and family.
If you haven't discovered Hallmark Christmas movies yet, what are you waiting for? The perfect combination of sweetness and camp. You don't care that the production values are in the garbage, in fact, the worse the better! There's something about how cheesy they are that is heartwarming and appealing. This week, we have TWO guests! Dr. Sandy and Emily weigh in on the value of these silly movies. (Apologies for the sound, we were "on location" and the sound is all over the place.) Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
A hodge-podge Podgecast in the truest sense. We talk about the grind of leading up to Christmas and how Christina and John celebrate a part of the season. (Also we spend about 10 minutes talking about John's gift.)
Christmas can be a divided time of year. Egg nog, or Egg NO. White lights or multicolored lights? These are some extremely important questions! Christina and John tackle them with a game we call, "Ho, Ho or No, No!" Everything from should you open presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to exactly HOW MUCH DO YOU HATE THE ELF ON THE SHELF!?!?!?
What do Michael Cohen, Wreck-it-Ralph and supermarket rewards cards have to do with each other? LOYALTY. What does LOYALTY mean? Why have we always viewed it as a "GOOD" thing, when clearly it hurts more than it helps? Christina and John talk about the (few) pros and (mostly)cons of LOYALTY.
This was meant to be an easy week. Amid a short, but no less crazy week of Thanksgiving, long car rides, sicknesses, tree lighting and then tree decorating, we found time to celebrate WOLFENOOT. What is WOLFENOOT you ask? Well, you'll just have to listen to find out. (Or else, you could just Google it, but where's the fun in that?)
This started out because the Oxford English Dictionary word of the year for 2018 is "TOXIC." We already talked about TOXIC MASCULINITY back in April, but we had more to say about it, and just the idea of what is TOXIC today anyway. We saw a couple of movies that always adds a jump off to our conversations. But the one that was the most raw was Bohemian Rhapsody. It brought back a very painful and HIGHLY TOXIC TIME in John's youth. This is a heavy, and definitely NOT a fun, Podgecast, so don't have a listen in the car as you're heading to grandma's house for pumpkin pie.
What is HOME? What defines it? Why do so many people not feel at home? Christina and John ask these questions while discussing the novel "The Book of Unknown Americans," by Cristina Henríquez. Listen and see how your definition of HOME fits.
Christina and John have a laugh reading people's "To Don't" Lists. Things people would never and should never do. Always wanting to try something new, we decided to record The Podgecast and broadcast it on Instagram Live. So thank you to the people who tuned in, and thank you for those who listen!
No, this week's Podgecast is NOT about food. Not about SQUASH or MINCE-MEAT. It's about how we SQUASHED our original idea, then we MINCED words in one recording and weren't happy so we REPEATED the entire thing! This week is a true HODGE PODGE reflection on a very crazy week for us. On the plus side, it's only 51 minutes!
What do you do to save money? Christina and John have laughs along the way of trying to keep as many greenbacks in their bank account as possible. They talk about the creative and perhaps not so appealing ways they avoid spending money.
We totally see we could have used the ¢ and the $ signs for the "C" and "S" in "CHEAPSKATES," but honestly it looked dumb.
Between Christina and John, we have two education degrees, numerous years working in schools and a BUTTLOAD of opinions on education. We picketed with our local teachers when they were on strike and at the same time, we have seen first hand what happens when education doesn't work for the students. After seeing the film, Won't Back Down with the always amazing Viola Davis, we decided to spend a little bit o' time talking about education and what it means to be a teacher today.
*(AKA - we had a really rough couple of weeks and we just wanted to talk about something silly and fun and about the places we like to go around town.) Do you think we had any life lessons about what and where we eat? Yeah... it's us, so of course there are.
Discomfort. Comfort. Able. Discomfortable. We need to walk through the various stages of these places to get to a place of true living. As we do this we can also validate the needs and rights of others. It means WORK. It means being out of our comfort zones. But it also means we are all capable and ABLE to change not only ourselves...but the lives and rights of others. It’s ok to be discomfortable...it’s a new word for a new way of thinking.
So there's this story of a man who bamboozled a number of good people on his way to the top of an empire. He swindled and conned and connived and lied and lied again. Then there's the story of The Founder! (See what I did there?) It originally started out as a simple assignment from a fellow podcaster (@africanprincessinamerica) Leave it to Christina and John to turn a simple assignment into a whole "thing" about the state of the nation. But it was right there, we couldn't help ourselves. Have a listen!
Oof. This is a doozy! We're starting our second year off RIGHT with our longest Podgecast ever. We're sorry it's so crazy long, but it's an important topic. Why do we victimize others? Why do we allow ourselves to be victims? Even worse, why do we MAKE OURSELVES into victims? The book might be 40-years-old, but the ideas are just as important today as they were in the 70's. Break this week's Podgecast into chunks if you have to, but definitely have a listen!
Maybe our math is screwy. This is our 52nd week of doing this here little Podgecast. That makes it a year, right? (52 weeks in a year) But our first episode was 9/22/2017... Maybe it's the metric system? Who knows. The point is, this is our "PODGIVERSARY" Podgecast. We talk about where we've been, where we're going and the process it took to get here today! Thank you for joining us on the journey so far!
Finally got to see BlackkKlansman and decided we needed to talk about it on the Podgecast. It's a powerful film, funny and nerve-wracking and guess what? THE STORY IS TRUE! Christina and John talk about connections to the themes in the film... gotta be careful with the hashtags on this one!
What makes a system? Why do we adhere to so many? What is the reason these systems hang on for so long? Why do we allow it? Christina and John discuss how systems affect all of us whether we realize it or not.
A super short trip to Salem was had - only we could squeeze a two week vacation into a three day/two night road trip. It was all about history, art, food, witches, literature, walking, museums, shopping, fancy drinks, seafood and trying to navigate a vacation with two kids, an old man and a dog. Oh yeah, we brought our unique spin to the trip as well, because nothing is simple with us. Come and feel all the feels with us, won't you!
Psych 101 - What makes us? Nature or Nurture? This week's Podgecast explores the ideas of what makes a person in today's world. Using a new documentary as a jump off - the amazing film, THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS - about triplets separated at birth Christina and John bat around ideas about what makes a person who he or she is. Join the discussion, see the film, and ask yourself... what exactly makes you YOU!
Americana is defined as, "things associated with the culture and history of America, especially the United States." To most people, the idea of Americana is quaint, cute and a part of our shared heritage. On the other side, to many, it's sinister, bullying, dark and intimidating. But it's accepted because of "NOSTALGIA." This is the way things are done and it shouldn't change. Christina, John and Podgecast guest Mark discuss this dark side of Americana.
SHORT PODGECAST ALERT! Yes, this one is only ONE HOUR! We are right in the middle of a new meditation series which led to a big discussion the other day. This new episode is not about meditation (we covered that already...go back if you missed it- Podgecast Ep 27 - Sit Back and OMMMMMMM!). This one is about scarcity, abundance, self worth and how our belief systems change everything! Also, did we mention it’s ONLY ONE HOUR!
Marriage is work. Man, do we know this. Many don't put in the effort the way they do with their careers, home projects, school, parenting, etc. A successful marriage can include anything from undoing so many bad habits to unraveling childhood trauma to meshing different lives and lifestyles all while being authentic and brave. (And neither of us drink, so it's all done without alcohol, these days!) It's a lot! But if you love the person... it's all good! Right? Listen as Christina and John talk about two years of wedded bliss, blessings & bullshit as they strive to live a life in the THIRD BOX! (See earlier Podgecast if you don't know what that means!)
How many times have you heard or read, "Real heroes don't wear capes..." Enough to make you spit. BUT... in this week's Podgecast, we discuss an actual hero who does not indeed wear a cape, but rather a cardigan. If you haven't seen the Mr. Rogers documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor" you need to RUN to a theater and see it. Kindness, compassion, love, caring. This man not only taught these values on TV, but actually LIVED them! What a concept! Listen as Christina and John discuss growing up in the era of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood! (Warning - light crying does occur!)
Our good friend Mark pays us a visit to talk all about his addiction to board games. How he takes normal "meeples" the boring, single color figures that comes with most games, and turns them into miniature works of art. No crying in this Podgecast, guaranteed!
You may have remembered hearing about our friend Dave DeRosa in the Podgecast. He was supposed to visit on Friday, July 6. (We were hoping to talk him into recording a Podgecast WITH us!) He died Wednesday, July 4. We're trying to wrap our brains around this sudden, tragic loss. He was John's oldest friend, they've known each other since age 4. Coming off our topics of "Finding Your Peeps" and "Friends" we thought it fitting to include him in this recent theme with this bonus, SPECIAL episode dedicated to him. Part eulogy, part processing on our part, part celebration of his life and the light he brought to everyone he knew. We thank him for being in our world - with constant support, encouragement, sharing and energy... please listen to our remembrance of our dear friend, Dave.
Dave commented recently on how he didn't appreciate us making HIM cry on our "Why We Cry" episode. There's a whole bunch of us crying on this one. He is worth every tear.
One would think an innocuous, sweet show about friendship would bring two people together... In this house, that was not the case. Christina, Ms. Sunshine and Rainbows, embraced the silliness and sweetness of the show while John, Mr. Crankypants, begrudgingly sat through the entire 10 seasons of the series in one year. (He freely admits, a moderate percentage of those episodes were spent napping...) Listen as we have a “spirited” discussion about Friends.
Why do families have to be our "peeps?" The only thing that brings us together? People's ages, jobs, lifestyles, families, philosophies are different but you know when your vibe matches up with someone else's. This is when you know you've found "your people." Listen as we discuss our paths to FIND OUR PEEPS!
Oof. Who's idea was this??? Christina and John - taking a page from the amazing CRYBABIES podcast (which has sadly shut down) - talk about what makes us cry. How many times can adults cry on a podcast? If this were a drinking game and you took a drink every time we cried, you'd be DRUNK!
When the ability to travel is limited, what do we do? Go nowhere? HECK NO! We find the way to travel, even if it's discovering a town that's a half hour away! Listen as Christina and John talk about their Adventures In Air(bnb).
Here's another one of society's awful constructs. The pedestal. Why are people still on them? Why haven't we smashed the hell out of them? Why do we put them on there in the first place? It's time to dust off that wooden baseball bat and get to smashing!
Why did we move from the Bronx to the Poconos? Christina and John talk about all the reasons there was such a migration from NYC to The Poconos over the last 30 years.
Didn't think it was possible to record a Podgecast based on buying a replacement chair, did you? Well, we proved YOU wrong! Leave it to Christina and John to turn replacing a broken office chair into a series of life lessons.
The handwritten and colored cards are adorning the refrigerator. You’ve worn your macaroni art necklace. And you’ve accepted your chore coupon, which, let’s be honest, will never get redeemed. Motherhood is truly a miracle. But there’s another side. A dark side. In The Dark Side of the Mom, Christina and John talk about the darker, far less glamorous side of the world’s most thankless job.
Dr. Sandra Eckard,(Sandy, to her friends!) a professor at East Stroudsburg University, hung out in the basement and talked with us about everything from our beloved local theater, to women on film to the #metoo movement... and especially about our mutual love of pop culture (and how best to bring that geekiness into the classroom.)
We started off as two scrawny kids in the Bronx. We didn’t stay that way though. Have a listen to one of our most vulnerable podcasts as we discuss food, health, childhood stress, societal pressures, weight loss surgery, emotional eating, body changes after babies and why we hope to dump it all and be our true selves. Grab a donut and “get the skinny” on the fat.
On this week's Podgecast, Christina and John talk about: -The definition of toxic masculinity -Tim Winton's new book and his speech on toxic masculinity where he defined it as terrorism. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjJ75Ltl9PaAhWCPN8KHUEuDFIQFggpMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fbooks%2F2018%2Fapr%2F09%2Fabout-the-boys-tim-winton-on-how-toxic-masculinity-is-shackling-men-to-misogyny&usg=AOvVaw3JKSXuA4_rndw7Q3EaQO_C -How nearly 3 women per day are killed as the result of domestic violence https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/domestic-violence-nearly-three-u-s-women-killed-every-day-n745166 -Some of the names that come with along with toxic masculinity -The group "Men Can" and their stand against domestic violence https://www.lutheransettlement.org/mencan/
In this week's Podgecast, Christina and John discuss:
-What it's like being a geek today. Starting off with Mason Ramsey, the kid who became an internet sensation by singing a Hank Williams song in an Illinois Walmart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtzP6tdKQoU
-The mixed messages about being a geek for both girls AND boys
-Leading into Christina's early love of rocks and minerals which stretches to her today:
The NY/NJ Gem and Mineral Show https://www.ny-nj-gemshow.com/
Macungie Mineral Show http://www.mineralfest.com/
-And how John has always loved dinosaurs and frequently visits the American Museum of Natural History to check in on the dinosaur exhibits https://www.amnh.org/
-Other ways people are geeks, such as David Chang, Phil Rosenthal and their relationship with food
David Chang in Ugly Delicious https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7907916/
Somebody Feed Phil https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7752034/?ref_=nv_sr_1
-How history geeks and food geeks can now come together with a recent discovery: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/13/dining/hill-rice-slave-history.html
-And how today's parents help their young geeks loves allowed to be fostered and nurtured early on
"Remember when..." Guess what? It was awful. But you've convinced yourself it was the BEST TIME EVER. WHY? Nostalgia. Nostalgia distorts how you remember things. Christina and John talk about a movie that swims in nostalgia and how people tend to romanticize the past just because. Have a listen.
What started as a birthday gift to create a family tree, devolved into a full blown obsession for a short time... complete with missing limbs, twisted branches and unknown roots.
We spend our lives avoiding a certain behavior or breaking patterns... or else we end up following in the loops and patterns shown to us very early on. We end up doing one or the other. But there's a THIRD BOX of optimum behaviors we are never even aware of... so how could we even try to strive for them or live for them? Christina and John talk about how they strive to reach the THIRD BOX!
Christina and John delve into the benefits of MEDITATION. Why don't people meditate more? Why do people feel they "can't do it"? All it takes is 20 minutes a day! For more information click: https://chopracentermeditation.com
Christina and John, coming off a five day power outage, discuss the different aspects of losing, and regaining, power. From turning on a light and adjusting the heat to reclaiming the power in your own life, today's episode is a TRUE Podgecast!
Stemming from a discussion from last week's Podgecast, Christina and John talk about what it takes to "live authentically" - surprisingly difficult especially for men, it seems.
Christina and John debate what's going to win come this year's Academy Awards. Will there be any surprises this year? Have a listen and see how we scientifically dissect these films and make predictions even though we didn't see all the films.
Christina and John discuss Black Panther. Its beauty, its significance and even the recent pushback against the film. There are a few F-Bombs and some tears in this Podgecast, so be warned.
Emily drops in on the Podgecast to tell us all about herself, her band names, her thoughts on Hallmark movies and which Podgecast Episode is her favorite.
Christina and John talk all about love. From their start in the 1980's to what they love to old game shows (Did you know Chuck Woolery is a raging right-winger?)to The Love Boat!
Christina and John reminisce about their favorite toys from the 70's and 80's. (John tries to avoid talking about Star Wars, and trips a few times.)
What with the government shut down for a few days, we figured we'd step in and take over and start passing some laws. That's how the system works, right? Well they got things back up and running before we could jump in. Maybe the next shutdown (in a few weeks) we'll have our chance.
Don't forget - check us out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepodgecast
Christina and John discuss bands that should be DELETED from the face of the Earth. It's a tricky power to possess, so make sure you wield it responsibly.
Usually our podcasts run way over an hour but since women get less of everything and this is about them...we wrapped it up under an hour. We talk about terrible TV Tropes, Time's Up and the #MeToo movement.
Christina and John talk about how TV shaped them as kids. Keep an ear out for Pop-pop who makes a guest appearance because he "wants to know what's happening." (About 45 minutes in.)
Christina explains her process of doing something new every day. Her process started in 2011 and has been going ever since. The timing was great to kick off the new year!
Check her "Do the New" page out on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/Do-the-New-1178357652181509/

Christina and John talk about Halloweens past. Some Halloweens were fun. Some, not so much.
Christina and John talk about the "Mental Load" that women carry. It just so happens that today is International Day of the Girl! Today's topic is a bit heavier, but it's important to talk about.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/shelleyzalis/2017/10/10/lets-talk-about-why-girl-is-a-mindset-on-international-day-of-the-girl/#575adc2ff48b
