Find out what's happening with Midwestern State Women's Basketball during this week's Stang Gang Podcast, featuring head coach Brenita Jackson.
Midwestern State (11-12, 9-8) is preparing for a crucial week at D.L. Ligon Coliseum as UT Permian Basin (12-11, 10-7) and Angelo State (16-7, 12-5) visit the Mustangs, who are battling to make the LSC Postseason Tournament.
The Mustangs earned their first road victory of the year by defeating the Falcons at UTPB Gym Complex last month, 62-57. MSU took a 15-5 lead in the first quarter at Odessa as the Falcons were just 2-of-19 from the field to start the game. UTPB is 4-5 on the road after suffering back-to-back losses at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M.
Angelo State, which has lost its last two games, did not face a Midwestern State team with a full arsenal in San Angelo. The Rambelles won the first meeting, 84-61, on Jan. 16, but Zarria Carter was only able to play 20 minutes after getting called for three fouls in the first half, and a fourth foul was assessed in the opening two minutes of the third quarter.
Carter and the Mustangs dealt with similar frustration in their 52-50 loss at Western New Mexico on Saturday as Carter was only able to play 16 minutes due to foul trouble.
Carter scored 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting, leading MSU to an 88-70 win at Sul Ross State in the first game of their recent road trip.
A candid conversation with head basketball coach Justin Leslie, who shares his thoughts about the men's basketball team and previews upcoming action for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State (17-5, 12-4) earned an elusive road sweep on its arduous journey to Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico last week.
Midwestern State took an early lead in its first-ever visit to Sul Ross and defeated the Lobos, 75-63.
On the second leg of the trip, Midwestern State held Western New Mexico to 27.3 percent shooting from the field and pulled away for a 68-46 victory.
This week, the Mustangs have a pair of rematches.
UT Permian Basin (15-8, 11-6) arrives at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the heels of back-to-back losses at West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. The Falcons saw a 20-point lead disappear the last time they faced the Mustangs, who won in overtime at Odessa, 80-74, on Jan. 18.
The Mustangs are looking to turn the tables on Angelo State (14-9, 10-7), which defeated Midwestern State in their first meeting, 72-68. The Rams have won three of their last four games and have a 5-5 road record entering this week.
Midwestern State head men's and women's tennis coach Scott Linn discusses the challenges his teams face week-in and week-out, and the on-court battles throughout the course of the season.
Midwestern State has begun the 2025 campaign and is facing some tough competition on the road as it prepares to challenge for the Lone Star Conference championship and more. Scott Linn has an experienced women’s team that reached the national semifinals last season, and the squad is ranked No. 5 in the nation among NCAA Division II schools. The women are laser-focused on winning. The men’s team is No. 19 in the nation to start the season and earned a season-opening victory at Rockhurst before playing No. 8 Washburn in a closer dual match than the 7-0 final score indicates.
Linn is not only the tennis coach this season, but he is also the father of a rising star on the Midwestern State softball team. Sydney Linn made her home debut with the Stangs while her dad was on the road with the tennis team.
Head coach Rich Renner breaks down the Mustangs as they pursue a Lone Star Conference championship.
Rich Renner begins his second season as the head coach at Midwestern State and brought 36 high school players to the university on National Signing Day. Despite the emergence of the portal, the players coming in on National Signing Day are still relied upon to form the foundation of the program. This year, the emphasis was on size as the Mustangs look to compete in the Lone Star Conference. Four new coaches joined the staff in the midst of the recruiting season, including new offensive coordinator Kirk Bryant, but they were still able to help Midwestern State land a signing class that has Renner optimistic about the future of MSU football.

Midwestern State rebounded from a tough home loss to Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night to complete a season-sweep against West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs improved their conference record to 10-4 with an overall record of 15-5. While St. Mary’s and Dallas Baptist are atop the standings, Midwestern State is just a game behind third place Lubbock Christian and is tied in the loss column with UT Permian Basin. The Mustangs already have a win over the Falcons with another matchup coming up at D.L. Ligon Coliseum later this month, and the Stang Gang concludes the regular season with a home-and-home against Lubbock Christian. But first, MSU makes the arduous journey to Alpine, Texas, and Silver City, New Mexico, to face Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico. Midwestern State defeated both teams handily last month at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, but the team should expect a much tougher challenge when facing these teams on the road.

Midwestern State won two lopsided games last week, defeating Cameron and Oklahoma Christian by 32 points apiece. The Mustangs came out on fire against the Aggies, hitting six of their first seven attempts from 3-point range to take a 12-point lead in the opening eight minutes. The Mustangs overwhelmed Cameron, 98-66. Two days later against Oklahoma Christian, MSU established an 11-point lead in the opening five minutes and coasted to a 90-58 triumph over the Eagles. Midwestern State is 9-0 at home this season and has won its last 13 games at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs got off to slow starts against Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M and had to settle for a split on a road trip earlier this month. Those two teams visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum this week to face an MSU team that is ninth in the nation among NCAA Division II schools and leading the Lone Star Conference in field-goal percentage defense. Meanwhile, MSU is shooting 39.2 percent from beyond the arc, which is 11th in the nation and second-best in the LSC. The Mustangs lead the league in 3-point attempts 251 and 3-pointers per game (25.1). Midwestern State is the fifth-highest scoring team in the conference with the fourth-best scoring defense in the league. Midwestern State is tied with Lubbock Christian at 9-3 in conference play, sitting behind St. Mary’s (11-1) and Dallas Baptist (11-2).

Midwestern State is entering “separation season” as it begins a four-game homestand on Thursday night with a renewal of the “Red River Rivalry” as the Cameron Aggies visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs hope to cement their standing as one the top-eight programs in the conference over the next couple of weeks. Angelo State took advantage of Zarria Carter’s foul trouble on Thursday night to defeat the Mustangs, 84-61. But some stern conversations on Friday led to an impressive performance at UT Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon. MSU earned its first road win of the season by knocking off the Falcons, 62-57, at UTPB Gym Complex. It was the Mustangs first victory over a top-eight team in the LSC and moved MSU to within a game of eighth place and only two games behind the three 7-4 teams that are sitting behind the top-four teams in the conference. The Stang Gang tips off against the Aggies at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.

Stephanie Radecki has a lot to like about her team and about the future of Midwestern State volleyball.
