Ben is the Director of Rugby at Ealing Trailfinders and has been involved with the club since their days in London Div 2. He was fly-half and Head Coach during the 2012-13 season when I played my single season for the club. This interview was recorded August of 2000 and 19 at the always improving home of Ealing Trailfinders - Vallis Way. We covered some fascinating topics: The changes Ben has witnessed whilst climbing the leagues, thoughts on the new law trials and providing a fabulous environment for young players to improve and also get an education in their Academy.

Geezer and I have crossed paths in rugby circles in almost every capacity as players, coaches, on the same team and on opposite sides.

Now I have been retired for some time, it is with great clarity that I can say that Mike is the best coach I ever had - a superb mixture of incredibly detailed technical appreciation, motivational skills and the ability to create a culture that bred excellence are just some of the reasons why I rate him so highly.

This interview was recorded in August of 2019 and we had an in-depth chat about the achievements and challenges for USA rugby - both the 7’s and the 15-a-side version of the game.

We got into coaching philosophies and Mike shared some genuine coaching knowledge-bombs. If you are a young or new coach then there is some seriously good advice in this episode for you.

And lastly, we talked about Mike’s amateur club - Bromley RFC where three generations of the family Friday are still involved.

The 6 Nations is over and it was another fantastic tournament. Super Saturday dealt up three very decent games - all going to form! As usual, I got a load of special guests to discuss everything that happened.

For France vs Scotland - I spoke with Bruce Aitchison - a frustrated but proud Scotsman. For Wales vs England - I spoke with Huw Jones and we discussed England’s record win against Wales. But we start with Italy vs Ireland where I spoke with Simon Elkinson who was in a reflective mood following the culmination of another amazing tournament.

My guest this week is Laws Co-ordinator at World Rugby and Founder of RugbyReferee.net, Keith Lewis.

We talked about the days when we shared a pitch back in the early 2000’s when I played at Old Colfeians, how Keith got into refereeing and his early influences at Preston Grasshoppers. We then discussed how referees are assessed and coached, how positioning is vital and the differences when moving up the leagues as a referee.

Keith shared his challenges when progressing through the ranks including a shocking moment in a huge Championship game between London Welsh and Exeter.

We discussed Keith’s role at World Rugby and how laws are developed, tested and implemented. There are so many things to consider including the potential unforeseen circumstances.

Keith also shared why he started RugbyReferee.net and how it’s developed into a wonderful resource and community for referees.

This is a brilliant chat with so much quality information and great stories - I hope you enjoy.

Lynn Evans is my guest this week.

Without doubt this episode is the one that has been most looked forward to by you.

I’ve been receiving messages for months asking when it was due to air and just this week, Dan Cottrell said "Wow, what a guest. One of the original thinkers. Games in training owe a massive debt to this guy” and Russell Earnshaw described Lynn simply as a “Hero".

This interview was recorded in January of 2020 and Lynn took me on a lovely journey through his life from growing up as a boy in Wales, joining the RAF, playing for Oxford and Oxfordshire in the County Championship. We then went deep into his love of coaching and his two major coaching influences Chalkie White and Pierre Villepreux.

I found Lynn delightful and engaging and if I have half of his energy when I’m in my 80’s I will be incredibly grateful.

Happy New Year!

Hello Amateurs, hope you all had a wonderful Christmas out there in Amateur Rugby World. Think of all your professional cousins who had to abstain from the mince pies and glasses of sherry!

A lot of clubs play an internal club fixture this time of year - Young uns VS Old uns - or some other variation. If you are one of these clubs then I hope the game was played in the right spirit and you had a good christmas booze up afterwards!

I’d love to hear about some of your Christmas rugby traditions. What do you do that makes your game special? Write in at hello@amateurrugbypodcast.com

And, if you’re at a club that doesn’t have a regular intra-club fixture at christmas, why don’t you think about starting one next year - it really is a great way to build bonds within the club and make more memories.

I’ve got some absolutely banging interviews for you coming up in the New Year. We go in depth on subjects like:

Men’s mental health
Player welfare
Coaching
Club culture
Player pathways and of course, plenty of fun stories along the way.

Make sure to subscribe at Apple Podcasts, amateurrugbypodcast.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

Now, if you listened to my short Christmas episode, you’ll know that I’ve personally gotten a lot out of producing the podcast so far. But I’d really like to help you as well.

I’ve been a professional web developer for over 20 years building countless sites for many happy clients. I would love to do the same for you too. If you need a website or you hear of someone who does, I would be very grateful if you think of me and get in touch so we can have a quick chat about how I can help you. You can contact me via email hello@amateurrugbypodcast.com or via Twitter or Facebook @amrugbypodcast.

The rugby community is a wonderfully supportive, helpful place, so if you’ve enjoyed the podcast so far and you think other people you know might like it too, I’d be incredibly grateful for any social media exposure, and ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts - it really does help get the podcast to a wider audience which in turn helps me keep it going!

So, lastly, have an incredible 2020 and do everything you can to keep our great game flourishing. Happy New Year, oh and don’t forget, if you, or someone you know needs a website, please get in touch.

Get out and play!

Merry Xmas!

Hello Ho Ho Amateurs. Welcome to this special, super-short Christmas episode of The Amateur Rugby Podcast.

I know everyone is very busy this time of year, so I just wanted to give you a quick update about myself and the podcast and let you know some plans for the year ahead.

I started out this podcast back in September with some very modest goals.

I had been out of the game for 3 years and was looking for a way to contribute back to the rugby community. My travelling lifestyle meant that a coaching role wasn’t really practical, so, having become obsessed with podcasts I decided to jump on the bandwagon.

I also thought it would be a great personal development tool for myself in quite a lot of different areas.

There is the technology - what to record with, how to edit, where to upload and all the website and social media things that go along with anything in the public domain nowadays.

It would also provide an amazing excuse to reach out to lots of former team-mates, coaches and other important people in the game and spend some time having very deliberate conversations. As a shy introvert, this was a challenge for me but I soon found that podcasting was a very safe space.

I want to thank all my guests. You have all been so generous with your time, energy and honesty and it was a real pleasure catching up with all of you!

I initially announced that I would be recording enough episodes to get to Christmas when I would evaluate the situation, was I enjoying it? Did I see value in it? Did I want to carry on?

It became apparent very quickly that the answer to all of the above was yes, so I’m very happy to announce that I will be carrying on at least until the end of this Amateur season in April 2020.

I have already recorded 4 great interviews for after Christmas and I am recording a lot more over the festive season.

I normally ask you to tell someone about the podcast in person the next time you’re down your local rugby club, but today I’m going to ask for a Christmas gift from you to help take the podcast to the next level.

Think back to the episode that you enjoyed the most. If you could share that single episode on social media, maybe with a nice little write-up about why you enjoyed it so much and make sure to tag @amrugbypodcast - that will really help get the podcast to new ears and hopefully help me to grow it beyond 2020.

Lastly, to you, my listeners, thank you so much for being there and listening. The show is currently averaging around 200 downloads per episode and that is way beyond what I hoped for back in September.

Thank you, keep listening, and have an amazing Christmas…. and don’t forget to share you favourite episode - do it now!

Sammy Boulton I’ve known Sammy for many years and we’ve been opponents and team-mates. We have some common interests, two of which are stats and sports. This was exemplified when Sammy thrust the book ‘Moneyball’ by Michael Lewis into my hand one day and said: “read this, you’ll love it.” 24hrs later, I’d read that and I’d loved it!

This interview was recorded in August of 2019 and we talked about scrummaging, playing against your mates and post-rugby career pastimes.

It was a delight to catch up with Sammy and I really hope you enjoy our chat.

Mike Friday - Head Coach of the USA 7’s.
