One of the reasons victims of abuse stay in abusive relationships is due to suppressing past traumatic experiences. A lot are dealing with PTSD and do not realize it because they were never seen to be diagnosed.
Today's episode shares a little light on some of the things victims deal with when they have not dealt with past issues and what they could do to help resolve those issues.

I remember when I first heard about PTSD. I was a youth and from what I remember, most of what I heard about it was related to men who went to the Vietnam War. Not a lot was spoken about victims of abuse dealing with PTSD as it is today. There were issues in our community with couples experiencing abuse in the home due to trauma experienced by the men who served during the war. As told by my parents, and the other adults in my community, young men were taken from high school and taken to the war zone to participate in the war. Today's episode is the connection of PTSD and abuse. Experiencing abuse is NOT a joke. It can paralyze you, traumatize you, and prevent you from enjoying or living life to the fullest. Raising awareness of any forms of abuse, sharing relatable stories, the mindset of the victim and survivor, and things you can do to help are the premise of this podcast. Doing a recap and sharing my reflections in today's episode will help you to understand why I do this and will continue doing so. Next year will be a little different. I give a hint how in this episode.

Grannyism - The truth of the matter is there are people who have no respect for others or their boundaries and consider themselves privileged enough to cross those boundaries no matter what the victim says or does to prevent the occurrence, what their employer says about having no tolerance of it on the job, or even if they have been in trouble for committing these acts before. They just do not care. So when people are blamed for this ugly occurrence that has happened to them you pretty much just made things worse. ~ Elegant Granny

This episode will about the victims experience with sexual violence and sexual assault.
According to the RAINN website (Rape, abuse, and incest national network), every 73 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted; and every 9 minutes, that victim is a child.
From 2009-2013, Child Protective Services agencies substantiated, or found strong evidence to indicate that, 63,000 children a year were victims of sexual abuse.
A majority of child victims are 12-17. Of victims under the age of 18: 34% of victims of sexual assault and rape are under age 12, and 66% of victims of sexual assault and rape are age 12-17. Meanwhile, only 5 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison. Every day, hundreds of Americans are affected by sexual violence.

Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence are important to talk about. So many people feel ashamed of what has happened to them or have been threatened of what will happen to them if they tell their story. No one, absolutely no one, should ever feel like they are worthless, have no value, or not important because of this traumatic event. It does not matter what gender, age, race, nationality, sexual orientation, or creed, no one deserves to be treated with this form or any form of abuse.
This episode will be the start of a new series which involves the 2nd Annual Proactive Eye Sexual Violence Awareness Avocation.

This is the last installment of the Transitions series. Survivors of abuse have a hard time letting go of feelings just like everyone else. This is why in a previous episode I stated that the first 90 days are very crucial. Just because it was necessary to end the relationship and the survivor is now in a safe place does not mean their feelings for the one they left has ended. It takes time. And the longer a survivor has been with that person, the harder it is to heal. Love is not something you can turn off or on like a light switch. It is a matter of a growth and maturity which requires patience. Getting over that person involves the same thing. This time instead of having patience towards the other person you are in a relationship with, it is important that the survivor understands it is time to redirect that patience towards themselves. And to best support them, supporters – survivors need a lot of patience from you.
For those of you who are survivors, Granny wants to say – YOU GOT THIS! You are embarking on a new journey now so be proud of yourself. Yes it feels like hell because you still love them, but that’s ok. That just confirms you’re still human. What is not ok, is you still being in a space where they or anyone else can harm you in any shape or form.

Today’s episode will be back on track with the transition series, and today’s topic is rebuilding a relationship with yourself. Getting back to the most important person in your life – YOU – is a big deal because what generally happens as you are in an abusive relationship, absolutely everything is about the abuser and no one else, so the importance of your/kids existence (or the relationship with yourself) tend to fade. With this in mind, I will share a few things that could help.

The questions for this episode seem to be more about triggers, and they are pertaining to the work I do outside the podcast. For those who do not know, I am a Restoration Strategist supporting victims and survivors of abuse as they transition from toxic relationships. I also share resources with their supporters (friends, family, or coworkers) with resources to help them transition successfully. Just so you know, the website is being updated and will have new services released in Quarter 2. The tentative date is April 1, but I will keep you updated on the actual date of release.

Now that the victim has become a survivor, what to deal with first can be very confusing amid the other overwhelming factors surrounding them. Today's episode will take you through the main thing a survivor should deal with first to assure their success of transitioning after a life of abuse.

One of the many, many, many things a survivor of abuse deals with is fear. Not knowing if their abuser will track them down and harm them again; if they will threaten to harm their family members; stop their flow of money by causing them to lose their job/business; steal the children away if there are any involved; sending others to taunt them for leaving – these are the things survivors either deal with or are in fear of happening once they have left the toxic situation. Today, I am using this episode to speak to the survivor and the supporter to help them get from fearful to fearless.

As difficult as it is leaving out of a toxic relationship, it is equally hard evolving into a healed individual; mainly because as someone works on healing, they have to confront all the darkness they went through and process ‘out loud’ how it makes them feel and how they want to change it now that they have the opportunity to do so. Today’s episode will be about transitioning from toxicity to wholesomeness.

Today’s episode I will answer several questions I was saving for a quarterly Q & A but decided because of the amount of questions I received, to split them up and do a number of them now. So let’s get to it!

No one in this world should be more important to you than you, and this is also for those who have not experienced abuse. In any given situation, it is necessary that whatever, or whoever, you are engaged in or with, brings you peace and things you want to manifest. If that’s not happening, there is a problem.
Living that VIP status will help you gain momentum of continuing your life of freedom after a life of abuse.

This one is tough. How do you deal with the loss of someone you know or love who died by suicide? I can start by telling you how it made me feel – helpless, scared, angry, abandoned, guilty, etc. I never knew what caused my loved ones to leave me this way, and it is possible I will never know.
My prayer is that this episode will give you some options on how to recover after your loss.

Defined by One Love Foundation, emotional abuse is any abusive behavior that isn’t physical, which may include verbal aggression, intimidation, manipulation, and humiliation, which most often unfolds as a pattern of behavior over time that aims to diminish another person’s sense of identity, dignity and self-worth, and which also results in anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and post-traumatic stress (PTSD).

Men suffer from abuse so much more than we realize. As socially responsible citizens, we should support these men change mythical narratives by dispelling the behaviors and ideologies causing them to experience society's perception of them.

It may appear that men do not suffer at the hands of their abuser as much as women, but that could quite possibly be further from the truth. There are a few reasons why I say this.

My life has changed in many ways peacefully as I spend a lot of time recovering from Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). A lot of people misconstrue that you can just wish healing and it happens. Further from the truth. It is a continuous process and it involves a lot of work.

May is the month, we nationally recognize foster care, and raise the awareness of teen pregnancy prevention. This weeks focus is on opening up discussion on how the dynamics of foster care and teen pregnancy affect abused children.
I have never experienced living in a foster home, nor ever been a pregnant teen; but I have worked with many who have. It has always been a joy not only experiencing them in a teaching capacity, but also as Godchildren, some of them becoming my family members through adoption, and also adults as friends who lived as foster children growing up.
I’ll begin with a little back history of both foster care and teen pregnancy prevention to give you an idea of how and why they exist.

It is imperative you remember how much you matter. Having a healthy relationship with yourself is the biggest key to your success in healing after a life of abuse. Taking care of yourself is just one way of doing that. It is also a way of expressing how you love yourself.
This week, we are discussing what we were taught about self-love. I’ll start the conversation by sharing what I was taught. Hopefully, you will feel free to either leave a voice message on the anchor app so I can hear the values you were taught, or email me at proactiveeye@gmail.com. You can also leave a comment on the blog if you prefer to do it that way.

Tossing around today's discussion is a piggyback from a previous episode "Health Check After a Life of Abuse" you can listen to here if you missed it.
Why is taking care of yourself important.....YOU MATTER! Those traumatic experiences while being abused came with powerful lessons.
One of the main things to consider is having a healthy relationship with ourselves. If we cannot have a healthy one with ourselves, it is impossible to have a healthy relationship with anyone else.
After leaving your toxic relationship, it is vital to see a physician and a mental health specialists to support you on your road to recovery.

Today’s episode will be the 3rd installment of what life looks like to someone after a life of abuse on their journey to a healthier lifestyle. We will discuss dealing with your emotions after a toxic relationship.
Dealing with emotions can be a very delicate situation because you don’t always know when, where, or even how you may have offended someone as you triggered them as they are journeying to their recovery. Dealing with your own is more than enough to deal with.
As you are processing your emotions, you are able to realize what it is you really want; what you don't want; what you will accept; and what you will not accept because now you are able to be cognizant enough to specify the boundaries that will keep you in peace.
As always I will leave other resources for you and for your loved ones if you are supporting them after a life of abuse.
Thank you for listening. I appreciate your support.

In this brief episode, we will discuss what life looks like for someone after they are no longer in an abusive situation.
In order to be more successful with life, it’s best to plan. However, if you are in an abusive situation, sometimes depending on the severity of danger, you need to leave immediately. And even that looks different case by case. Each situation is dangerous, but some are at more imminent danger than others. The victims are the ones who know what level of danger they are dealing with even if they don’t know what to do about it or are afraid to do anything about it.
As always I will leave other resources for you and for your loved ones if you are supporting them after a life of abuse.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope everyone enjoyed their New Year celebration into the new decade. There are those among us who do not feel they have a reason to celebrate. Hopefully, these stats will assist you understanding why this is no happy occasion for them.
Children are the most affected by the violence that happen in the home. Most (who do not seek counseling or other supports to deal with trauma) grow up to be victims or perpetrators of abuse themselves. This year, we will discuss different aspects of abuse and how we are able to support our loved ones through the healing process.

This intermittent episode is about what victims, survivors, and supporters of abuse are dealing with during the holidays.
The spirit of Christmas is a chaotic but happy time for most. For those in my title, it can be very daunting to say the least. The last thing anyone wants to deal with is depression and trauma at this time, regardless your position.
My hope is that everyone is in a safe place and enjoying time with their loved ones.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As a survivor and Restoration Strategist, I urge each of you to consider getting involved decreasing the occurrences of this form of violence happening in your local community.
Three benefits of getting involved are:
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence - 1:4 women and 1:9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, Intimate Partner sexual contact, and or Intimate Partner stalking with impacts such as injury; fearfulness; PTSD; use of victim services, contraction of STDs, etc...
The Domestic Violence luncheon was hosted by the YWCA of Central VA
The Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Vigil was hosted by the Alpha Chi Omega chapter in Central Virginia

This episode was very emotional for me as to the reason it is short.
Suicide is a very serious conversation to have. If you don't know what to look for, one of the feelings you may experience is helplessness as I did.
This past Thursday was National Mental Health Day and I participated in a free class in my local community on being alert for signs of someone who may be contemplating suicide.
I also participated in a local "Out of the Darkness" walk hosted by my hometown raising awareness. As I was walking, more suppressed memories of loved ones began unfolding and I allowed them to come out as I was crying during the walk.
Finding classes in your community to assist you with learning the signs of someone contemplating suicide is a very helpful resource to equip you with what to do if you are ever in the presence of someone with these thoughts.
As always, thank you for listening and I appreciate you support.

This is an episode of my experiences with domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and suicide.
I don't go into deep detail, but this will help you to understand that I do have experience with each of the subject matters and why I became a Restoration Strategist.
This weekend, I will participate in the "Out of the Darkness" walk for suicide prevention in my area.
I will be back next week discussing my 1st experience with the walk and more during Domestic Violence Awareness month.
As always thanks for listening.
You are greatly appreciated.
