In this episode, DC and Alex talk about what it was like to train for the climb with an entire film crew by his side, what life’s been like since the release of the Free Solo movie, and what’s next for Alex.

What do skiing, rock climbing, and photography have in common? They can all become part of one story – if you seek the parallels.
For this episode we went back into the crates to bring you an exclusive episode with the one and only Jimmy Chin. Jimmy, who is a professional climber, photographer, and Academy-Award winning film director, talks with DC about what it was like to grow up as the “other.” He shares how his early understanding for different worlds helps him to draw parallels between seemingly strikingly different things today. But Jimmy would not be the success story he is without the help of his mentors, so in this episode DC and Jimmy geek out on storytelling and mentorship.

Leo Tenenblat (Drift's Chief Product Officer) is back to talk with DC about iteration. Leo shares what iteration is like at Drift and how it compares to other companies he's worked at – from the big ones (like Salesforce where he drove the Einstein platform) to the small ones (like the startup he founded called AppMesh). DC discusses the difficulty of tying together marketing and product releases too tightly. They also touch on the importance of feedback loops and why product teams need to get as close to the customer as possible. Is this really just a veiled 1-on-1 meeting for DC and Leo? You can be the judge.

There's a saying at Amazon: "Good intentions don't work. Mechanisms do." For well over a decade, Colin Bryar and Bill Carr worked in tandem with Jeff Bezos, building out the mechanisms and leadership principles that shaped the company into what it is today. How'd they do it? They started with a relentless focus on the customer – and worked backwards from there.
Colin and Bill were in the trenches for the creation of some of Amazon's most innovative products and services including Kindle, Amazon Prime, Amazon Studios, and Amazon Web Services. And on today's episode of Seeking Wisdom, they sit down with DC and talk about what Amazon was really like in the early days, the development of critical processes like the PR FAQ, single-threaded teams, and their best practices for hiring the right talent.

On this episode of Seeking Wisdom, DC and Adam dive deep into one of DC's favorite topics: storytelling. DC comes from a very analytical, framework-driven way of thinking and for many, including him, storytelling can seem arbitrary. It's a topic that's hard to get your arms around. So until DC founded Drift, he hadn't given it too much thought. But then he had to market to marketers. And that's when he finally began to understand the power of storytelling.
On this episode, you'll get practical and tactical advice on how to build a story that sells including lessons from DC himself, Joseph Campbell who popularized the concept of the "hero's journey", and why stand up comedians are great storytellers.

DC is often asked why he started Drift when he started Drift. As his fifth company, a lot went into the decision. But it boils down to a simple question – Why now? – with a simple answer– undeniable shifts.
In this episode, DC explains why “Why now?” is the most important question any entrepreneur can ask themself before starting a new venture. The answer must always be because of an undeniable shift – a massive change in our world, a megatrend that’s forcing people to adopt new behaviors. He also shares insights from three experts: Strategic messaging expert Andy Raskin, Sequoia Capital founder Don Valentine, and Sequoia partner and early Facebook employee Mike Vernal.

On this episode of Seeking Wisdom, DC and Adam dive into the lesson that inspired the show – why we all need to learn from history. The lessons learned by our parents and grandparents do apply to today. Tune into the full episode to learn how you too can prioritize learning from history.

On this episode, DC and Adam dig into the next lesson DC wishes knew when he was younger – how to prioritize what matters most and why it doesn't actually matter if you never get to any of the "the small rocks." In other words, do the one thing that will move you closer to your goal. That might take five minutes or it could take many days. Either way, this method of working is the anti-checklist. On this episode of Seeking Wisdom, DC and Adam touch on one of DC's vices – shiny distractions. In fact, it's DC's self-proclaimed weakness. As an eternal optimist, DC is always optimizing. DC and Adam are back on Seeking Wisdom to talk about the importance of reading every day – one of DC’s favorite topics. But he’s changed his tune a bit. Since COVID, DC understands that so much of the important stuff happens in the “space in between” – when you’re not reading or writing or listening, but rather just being. So on this episode, DC shares why he still thinks you need to read every day – and how to accomplish that goal – but also why you need to give yourself permission to be less intense about the practice.

On the very first official episode of #Operations, host Sean Lane sits down with Will Collins, VP of Operations at Drift. Together they look inward to focus on operations at Drift – Will was employee number 13. So what exactly does it mean to work in ops at a hypergrowth company? You'll find out in this episode.
Today on #Growth, Matt is talking all about experimentation. In this episode of Seeking Wisdom, DG is taking you back in time...to 2015. He had just joined the marketing team at Drift. There was no content. There was no blog. Data can only get you so far. On this episode of Seeking Wisdom, DC and DG are talking about the limitations of data, and why the most important thing you can do to scale your business is to get in the mud. Because getting in the mud means getting closer to your customers. It means getting your hands dirty and talking to them openly about their pain points. That’s where you’ll find all the answers you’re looking for.
To all the marketing and sales ops pros out there deep in the trenches, we know automation work isn’t glamorous. And maybe it seems like no one cares about your Salesforce hack or that Marketo lead routing program you built from scratch at 2 in the morning.
But we're here to change all that. Because without you, there would be no hypergrowth companies. Which is why we're introducing something brand new. #Operations – a podcast just for you. Every other Friday, you'll hear from Sean Lane, aka SAL, Director of Operations at Drift. We'll go under the hood of companies including Salesforce, Amazon and Okta to find out what it truly takes to scale through hypergrowth.
Finally. A show about ops. See you back here soon for the first official episode of #Operations.

Lauren has spent her whole career chasing data and finding answers to the toughest questions for industries that have undergone significant transformation. Matt and Lauren talk about the evolution of data science and how much it's all changed in just 20 years.

Results matter, but how do you create a performance-based culture from scratch? Today on Seeking Wisdom, DC and DG talk about meritocracies – and why they think every high-performing business should be one. In a meritocracy, the best ideas rise to the top based on merit alone. DC shares his three-part framework for how to create a meritocracy and evaluate team members based on loyalty, harmony, and results.
On today's episode of #Growth, host Matt Bilotti and Drift's VP of Growth, Guillaume Cabane, answer the million dollar question – when to make your first growth hire (and how). Here are a few hints: Make sure you've found product-market fit, a proven way for people to buy your product and a true customer base.
Growth teams are the most effective when they're able to reduce friction in your acquisition funnel. If there's no funnel...you don't need a growth person. So before even making your first hire, be sure to establish demand and educate the market about your offering.
Also in this episode – how growth teams should communicate with other areas of the business, setting up feedback loops, goal sharing and more.
In this episode of Seeking Wisdom, DC, DG and special guest Maggie Crowley are talking about one of their all-time favorite topics – books – about leadership. We’ll give you an inside look at the books that have made a difference to us – from experts like Christina Wodtke, Kim Scott, Bernadette Jiwa, and Patty McCord. So, if you’re looking to up your leadership game in 2019, this episode is for you!
On this episode of #Growth, host Matt Bilotti dives deep into the product onboarding experience of Superhuman, an email client and the "fastest email experience ever made."
No matter if you're in B2B or B2C this episode and Superhuman's unique, 1:1 onboarding experience is full of lessons you should steal for your own. Why? Because without stellar onboarding and activation, users will never pay you, stick around or tell their friends about your product. Be sure to catch all this and more on #Growth.
Add this to your list of things to stop doing in 2019 – waiting. On this episode of Seeking Wisdom, DC and DG are at it again, this time talking about why it’s time to stop waiting for perfect. This episode is for anyone who’s ever waited for everyone to agree, only to reach a consensus that is so watered down, you forgot what you were trying to solve in the first place. It’s a special episode of #Build. Host Maggie Crowley is joined by members of Drift’s Product and Engineering teams. Meet Alexa Nguyen, Senior Product Manager, Trevor Rundell, Director of Engineering, and Peter Karl II, Lead, Product Efficiency. The group chats through how product and engineering can work together most efficiently. That means breaking through the perception that engineers should be wholly removed from the customer. To tackle this problem at Drift, tech leads here are directly responsible for the outcomes of the products they’re working on (where at most organizations, that’s the Product Manager’s responsibility). This gives engineering more context around the products they're building. And empowers them. They’re expected to be on the front lines answering questions from customers. Seeking Wisdom is back to discuss the importance of 1:1 meetings – what they are, why you and your team need them, the best 1:1 formats and more. Hint: As a manager, these meetings are all about listening and roadblock removal. Also in this episode, “skip 1 meetings” plus go inside DC and DG’s own 1:1 meetings – and DC’s format to steal for your own company. In this episode: Format Tips for Successful 1:1s Strive for weekly 1:1s with direct reports, every other week if you have to Embrace “skip 1 meetings” where you meet every two weeks or once a month with anyone else on the team Keep them casual – go for a walk to get coffee or a juice, get in a room to whiteboard, don’t write everything down, listen instead – this is not an interrogation! Encourage your direct reports to talk by embracing the silence, give them the room they need to talk. Tips for Direct Reports: Come to the meeting prepared with agenda – DG uses Evernote Notebooks to record what he wants to talk about. Go to the meeting with the top 3 things you want to discuss. If it’s nothing specific, but you want a check in, go for a walk. If you don’t have anything particular, it’s okay to skip these meetings occasionally. On this episode of #Exceptions, we’re going inside Buffer. Buffer sells social media management tools for marketers, allowing you to schedule and analyze everything. It’s used by companies like Shopify, HelpScout, the Denver Broncos, and thousands more. The entire company is run on a platform of radical transparency. They’ve been publishing their revenues, metrics, and even employee salaries for years now. They’re truly walking the walk. Buffer doesn't just pay lip service to transparency. Buffer takes action. Buffer is creating something deeper than traffic. They’re starting conversations and then following through with their community. Through their public slack channel of over 5,000 members, they’re moving customers from traffic to audience to community. Think about your own company. Do you treat your customers as humans? Or merely as transactions? If the answer is the latter, that’s okay. These are changes that any company can make.
On this episode of Seeking Wisdom, DC & DG break down confirmation bias & why it's one of the most common biases that impacts how we make decisions at work and at home (and one of the top 25 Cognitive Biases that we deal with every day; arguably it's the #1 bias we have). Books mentioned on this episode: Thinking Fast & Slow by Daniel Kahneman Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini If you're a fan of the show, we'd love it if you left a six-star rating on Apple Podcasts. And if you leave a review and then take a screenshot and tweet at @dcancel and @davegerhardt, we'll hook you up with copies of the two books mentioned on this show.
Maybe you're in product dev, maybe you’re in marketing. Either way, you have customers, and your goal is to provide value for them, drive revenue, and surpass goals. Chances are, you’ve seen someone miss it. Maybe you’ve missed it.
Dave Gerhardt had read maybe 10 books his whole life. Then he met DC, who told him to read like his life (or at least career) depended on it. Now at Drift, he’s read over 100 in just 2 years. Why? Because it’s the difference between mediocrity and success. You can follow the greats in your area of interest, copy their results, implement their best practices, and avoid their mistakes. Maybe you’re thinking, “I don’t enjoy reading.” Neither did Dave. But after DC let him in on a few secrets, Dave began ravenously tearing through books on marketing, managing, training, things that mattered to him. 100 books later, he’s letting you in on his secrets, so today on Seeking Wisdom, DG is giving you three keys he learned from DC on on how to read for success PS. Customer support professionals remove the obstacles and clear the way for your customers to appreciate your product or service. They are the front lines of your business, representing your name day in, day out. Often time, customers service pros may be the only face or voice of a company someone can connect to the business. Yet, these individuals, the ones bearing the flag for an entire organization, are typically overworked, underpaid, and underserved. Meet Help Scout. Help Scout hasn’t just built a kick-ass SaaS product that enables CSRs and others to perform faster and better. They’ve created a culture where these professionals on the frontlines are valued, heard, and understood. Their clients love the product and the company, because both are built around them. From Help Scout’s customers, to their employees, to their CEO, to even those unhappy with how Help Scout’s changing the industry, I heard one thing in common with every stakeholder: Help Scout is ruthless about customer-centricity. The most important thing we can all do as product people is also something that most of us continue to fail at: talking to customers. Getting customer feedback is an example of something that’s simple, but not easy. It’s incredible that talking to customers and getting feedback is the one thing that we all know is the key to building great products—but apparently we don’t all do it. Luckily, there’s a way to massively increase the amount of feedback that you’re getting if you open up your definition of ‘customer feedback’ and instead focus on, ‘How can I talk to my customers more often?’” On Twitter @maggiecrowley and @seekingwisomio
Do you find yourself only learning from people that you like? If the answer is yes, then your growth is in serious jeopardy. Because guess what? There are not that many people in the world who are perfect. If you choose to wait around until they are, or until you like them, or until they have the right experience, you’re going to be waiting a very long time. Whatever the case may be, you must avoid this pitfall that Charlie Munger calls: The Liking/Loving Tendency. If you don’t rid yourself of it, it's going to be your biggest roadblock to growth.
What if your brand could be the battle cry, the rallypoint, the symbolic meeting place for your customers? What if your brand could transform your audience into a community of participants? That’s exactly what InVision has remarkably accomplished. They’ve found and listened to their community. They haven’t just provided solutions, they’ve understood the problem. They’ve created an elevated surface for their customers to have and share a voice. The InVision brand has built a platform. Is transforming your brand into a platform difficult? Yes. Impossible? I hope you’re ready for this. DG and DC just got back from Toronto, and they’re packed with tidbits of wisdom to download. This episode of Seeking Wisdom, DC and DG give us some straight up B2B advice. One nugget they dropped? Be yourself. Sure, sounds simple, almost too easy. That’s probably why most B2B companies forget how profound it is. No one wants to buy anything from someone who is fake. It hasn’t worked in B2C, and it will never work in B2B. Sometimes in B2B, we just have to get back to the basics.
Keeping a swipe file has been a game-changer for DG. It helps him come up with ideas and find patterns between ideas. If you don’t have a swipe file, you should definitely consider it. DG recorded this one in his car on the last day of vacation in Hilton Head, SC a few weeks back, just for you. The book he mentioned was Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This by Edward Boches and Luke Sullivan, who was an ad agency guy for 30 or so years. In this episode, DC busts out his whiteboard to talk about three different comparisons of company growth vs. individual growth. In the first, the company grows faster than the individual. In the second, the individual grows faster than the company. In the third (and rarest) scenario, both grow rapidly—together. You’ll also hear thoughts on intermittent fasting, Managing Oneself by Peter Drucker, and Total Recall (the book) by Arnold Schwarzenegger. It went something like this:“Stop wasting time talking about tools and backlogs. It doesn’t matter. Wistia is a company that markets a mission, not just a bunch of products. A few years ago, you might have described Wistia as a SaaS company that offers video hosting and analytics. But thanks to a major product launch this year, the company is in flux. They’re in growth mode, but they’re also in control of that growth. Like all other brands in the #Exceptions series, Wistia puts a huge emphasis on customer centricity. It’s one of the biggest reasons why more than 30,000 companies worldwide use Wistia products to create, host, and measure their videos, including companies like Mailchimp, Sephora, Zendesk, Squarespace, and Casper. Mike Volpe is now a CEO, so what’s he doing on Coffee With a CMO? DC is back from sabbatical, people. This is a very important day. If you listened to the episode with ET, you know that Drift’s two co-founders put sabbaticals in place for every three years instead of the typical five. Not just one time, but every three years. Which seemed like a great idea three years ago, but then DC had to be the first one to do it or else no one would… He was gone for a month, in Vermont, then L.A. And boy, does he have some stories... The three books DC recommended, all by Daniel Coyle, were The Culture Code The Talent Code The Little Book of Talent And here’s Jeff Bezos’s rubric for hiring. In the very first episode of #Exceptions, we meet a company so excited about building a brand that it kind of feels like they name the whole company after how they feel. In this one, Jay explores Gusto, a SaaS platform that helps automate and improve your payroll, benefits, and HR processes. They launched in 2012 and employ over 500 people across San Francisco and Denver offices. They’re valued at over $1 billion. In 2018, Gusto was named to the Fintech 50 by Forbes. DG found out a secret that has completely changed the way he does public speaking. It turns out, if you actually have a good framework, public speaking can become easy. Anytime you’re stuck, you can use these five points to get unstuck. They work for everything from presentations to slide decks to blog posts and even emails. Every employee wants to feel like they’re a part of a truly autonomous team. A team where they’re a part of the decision making process. A team where their voice matters. Where their opinions can make a difference. Maybe you’ve never been a part of a team like this. Or maybe you’ve only been a part of teams like this. Regardless, autonomy is something that everybody wants. But what does it look like in the real world?
What do you do about failure? I’m not talking about a test that you took that failed. I’m talking about true product failures. Products that, for whatever reason, just bombed. Failures far outside the acceptable scope of “fail fast.”
A lot of people think that it takes a 6-figure agency and a huge budget to build a brand. It’s actually a lot simpler than that. You can build your brand & your business with some time-tested advice: Be Real. Be Authentic. Be Human. Experience and a fancy degree can only get you so far. If you've listened to DC, you've probably caught that he doesn't exactly love hiring product managers with experience and those with their MBAs. Brad is the author of a new book called Peak Performance — which Ariana Huffington called "an essential playbook for success, happiness, and getting the most out of ourselves." Brad was a consultant at McKinsey before diving into the world of personal and professional growth, and now has a business coaching top CEOs when he’s not writing. Brad caught DC’s attention when he wrote an article about Work Life Balance for the New York Times, so we tweeted at Brad about coming on the podcast, he said let’s do it — and we met up at Brad’s apartment in Oakland a few weeks ago. In the early days of a company, meetings are rare. That’s exactly what has happened to us at Drift over the last few months (going from 15 to 30). And before we get to the point where people are spending more time in meetings than actually making things, David shared a memo with the team on our company wiki titled "Meetings at Drift.” So that’s what we’re talking about on this episode of Seeking Wisdom — how we deal with meetings, and the guardrails we use for meetings at Drift.
