How do you measure a year in a life?” It’s just as profound a question today as when it was first asked in Jonathan Larson’s musical phenomenon “Rent” nearly 30 years ago. While the lyric was always meant to be rhetorical, original cast member Anthony Rapp has finally arrived at an answer.
In an exclusive interview with 1010 WINS, Rapp shares how his new one-man show, "Without You" helped him through the most difficult year of his own life.
The Twin Parks Fire is one of the deadliest fires in the history of New York City. Over 60 people were injured, 13 critically at the time, and 17 people died, all ranging in ages from eight to 60.
It was a fire that was allowed to do such great damage due to multiple structural issues, such as alarms that did not go off and self closing doors that did not work. It was a fire that happened in the shadow of low employment of firefighters that could've helped fight the blaze, and it was a fire that was foreshadowed by the poor conditions of preventative measures in the building.
1010 WINS did not just cover the fire, but the news around it. What was the biggest contributing factor to the number of casualties? Which organization should shoulder the blame? What were the biggest structural issues that allowed the fire to reach such a high casualty rate, not just in the building itself but in the institutions that should've managed and regulated it?
April 12th in 2022 originally started as a day that, as one of our anchors put it, seemed to start off with a more muted headline concerning inflation prices among products. Sadly that was not the case after traffic reporter Karen Stuart for 1010 WINS started pointing out some serious delays around the N train at the Sunset Park station.
What started as a smoke warning quickly elevated to numerous reporters of gunfire with multiple people wounded, as much as over a dozen. Frank James, at the time unidentified, used smoke bombs in a subway car on the N train and started firing indiscriminately into the crowds.
People were running away in the trains trying to escape the smoke and gunfire with scattered reports from witnesses and police painting a grave picture of a mass casualty shooting happening right in the subways of New York City.
1010 WINS was one of the first stations on the ground that was filtering through the reports to give the most accurate picture of what was happening. From bringing on live interviews with witnesses to a team coverage of reporters on the ground covering all facets of the story, 1010 WINS provided some of the most comprehensive and accurate coverage of one of the deadliest subway shootings in the city's history.

Valencia is a volunteer for Sanctuary for Families for over 20 years now. Valencia, from Brooklyn, knew from the start that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. In 1997, fresh out of college and waiting to begin her career as a teacher, she began as a volunteer at Sanctuary for Families. On Thursday evenings, you’ll find Valencia at Sanctuary with the young children, some as young as two and others on the brink of adolescence, while their mothers are taking classes. She infuses their time together with security, as well as fun. Sometimes they work on homework; other times they paint, draw or play with new toys and find new enjoyment in familiar ones.
Valencia has also she spent part of her summers as a volunteer counselor at Camp Hope New York, where children of Sanctuary’s clients spent a week upstate just having fun, without fear of violence.
Sanctuary honored Valencia this past June, as a “Pillar of Change” at their annual volunteer recognition event.
Lynn Ann is the owner of the learning experience- a preschool in Hoboken, NJ that among its regular required curriculum- teaches kindness and philanthropy to the children.
Through monthly philanthropic and fundraising events, as well as songs and weekly lessons, preschoolers as young as age three are taught what it means to be kind and philanthropic.
Her curriculum- which is not taught in any other preschools- is rooted in these principals because she feels it is important to teach the younger generations about giving back and being kind to others.
Twenty-some years ago, Bronx resident Lynne Corry was homeless, addicted to drugs and alcohol, pregnant and living in a park. After fighting addiction and homelessness she is paying it forward by giving back to the agency that helped her survive.
She credits her dramatic turn-around and success to Samaritan Daytop Village’s: young mothers program, an intensive residential substance use disorder treatment program for pregnant women and mothers where she lived with her son while working on her recovery.
Even though she has long since graduated from the young mother’s program, Lynne continues to grow the annual gift program. she now receives donations from communities, schools, private citizens and foundations all over the tri-state area.
Juliana Fetherman was just a teenager when she noticed how hard it was for her brother, Michael, to make friends. Her brother has ADHD and autism which she says can be very lonely for him. Inspired by her brother and his struggles she was on a mission to help him and those like him build relationships.
She created an app called "Making Authentic Friendships" - which also happens to be her brothers initials. The app is built to match users based on age, diagnosis, interests, and location. eventfully the app will suggest meet-up spots so that if two people select the same activity interests they can then hang out and meet at that location.
It currently lives web based but Juliana's app will be officially released on ios and droid phone systems this august.

Iain Forrest is a 24yr old medical student at Mt. Sinai that has learned to heal with more than just medicine. He started off in college pursuing degree in music wanting to "be the next yo-yo ma" but one day he performed at a hospital for terminally ill patients and saw how his music resonated with them, lifting their spirits- and he wanted to help them and found a way to intertwine music with medicine.
Iain plays for all kinds of patients at different hospitals, using the power of music to transport them somewhere outside the pain. Aside from practicing medicine, he also finds time to bring his sounds to the streets of NYC sometimes performing at popular parks through out the city or Grand Central station.

Donna moved to Brooklyn from St. Lucia and began working with her aunt in salon since she was 16. She says shes always felt at home in a salon and working in beautifying others was therapeutic for her.
Recently her mother had a personal health issue which caused her to lose all her hair and got Donna into doing research for non-surgical ways to help her mother deal with these. She says seeing her mother go through this experience is what inspired her to want to help other women in similar situations.
She sees how something as simple as making a wig for someone with no hair, or giving a make over to someone can shed some light and positivity into their lives and make them feel beautiful again, like a woman again, like a person again.
She launched the free 'Beauty Day'- where every month this year she will offer her services and treat a woman going through an illness or situation like her mothers, with a spa day consisting of facial, makeup, hair done (complimentary wig if needed)
