Host Lori Thurman (KWC ’94, Title IX & Disability Services Coordinator) interviews international students Kayla Nunes and Sofia Bracho about life as women studying far from home. They discuss cultural differences in gender expectations, campus involvement and favorite KWC memories, observations about gender equity, and advice for female international students. Guests share lessons they’d tell their younger selves (be braver, take risks), personal sources of pride, one small regret, and hopes for post-graduation—pursuing careers/education while giving back. Joining Dr. Cousins in this episode is Keith Sharber. As the son of a United Methodist minister, he pursued a full-time career in radio broadcasting; three years as a disc jockey and then 11 years as a broadcast journalist. He moved to Owensboro in early 1979 as a broadcast journalist for WOMI and WBKR radio and was later promoted to news director. In early 1987, he left the full-time broadcasting industry to accept the sales manager position with Canteen Service Company of Owensboro, Inc. After 34 years with the food service management company, he is now semi-retired and loves supporting Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Looking toward the future of higher education, Kim identifies accessibility as one of the biggest ongoing challenges for colleges. She explains that while awareness has grown, institutions must continue to invest in inclusive design, assistive technology, faculty training, and proactive support systems to truly meet the diverse needs of today’s students.
A passionate advocate for Special Olympics, Kim also discusses the powerful role the organization plays in building confidence, community, and opportunity for athletes. She encourages listeners to get involved locally by volunteering, attending events, coaching, donating, or simply showing up to cheer on athletes — reminding us that community support makes a lasting difference.
Kim paints a clear picture of what an ideal accessible campus should look like: universally designed spaces, seamless physical access, inclusive classroom practices, readily available support services, and a campus culture where differences are respected and celebrated.
This inspiring conversation highlights the power of service, inclusion, and community — and reminds us all that meaningful change often begins with one person choosing to make a difference.

Kentucky Wesleyan College President, Dr. James Cousins, is back with his latest podcast. In this episode, Dr. Cousins chats with Dr. Johann Neem, Professor of History at Western Washington University. Dr. Neem speaks on the campus TONIGHT, March 19th at 6pm, as part of the Wade Lecture. He speaks in the Wells Activity Center. Dr. Neem will examine how Americans at the founding understood the promise and limits of the American Revolution, why we are so divided over the Revolution today, and how we might find our way back to a Revolution that belongs to all Americans. In Episode 4 of the Breaking Barriers Podcast, host Lori Thurman, 1994 Kentucky Wesleyan College graduate and current Title IX and Disability Services Coordinator, sits down with fellow Panther alum Angel Welsh (Class of 2003), Executive Director and Founder of My Sister’s Keeper.
The conversation opens with Lori sharing her personal connection to Angel and My Sister’s Keeper, highlighting how their paths crossed through a shared commitment to serving unhoused women and children in the community. Angel reflects on her time at Kentucky Wesleyan College, where she balanced life as a student-athlete, cheerleader, and employee while working multiple jobs both on and off campus. She discusses the challenges of managing those responsibilities and what it was like to navigate college as a female athlete.
Angel shares her fondest memories from her time at KWC and offers insight into whether she experienced gender-based discrepancies or inequities during her athletic career. The discussion then turns deeply personal as Angel explains how her own life experiences inspired the creation of My Sister’s Keeper and fueled her passion for advocacy and shelter work.
Throughout the episode, Angel offers wisdom she wishes she could share with her younger self, reflects on gender inequities in sports and the workplace, and discusses why female athletes and coaches continue to be undervalued. She speaks candidly about what she is most proud of both professionally and personally, and considers whether there is any moment in her life she would change if given the chance.

Join Kentucky Wesleyan College Disabilities Services and Title IX Coordinator, Lori Thurman as she sits down with 2013 KWC graduate, Lauren Goffinet. We will talk about her time as a student athlete at Kentucky Wesleyan. On the court, she was a force—Second Team All-GLVC, the team’s leading scorer with 11.8 points per game, top three-point shooter, and the player who logged more minutes than anyone else. From a 23-point performance in the NCAA Midwest Regional to a career-high 11 rebounds at Quincy, Lauren delivered again and again. She led the team in double-figure scoring games, steals, blocks, rebounds—truly an all-around competitor.
We’ll also dive into some deeper issues: equity in women’s sports, her experiences as a female athlete, her coaching journey, and the advice she offers to the young women she mentors. And with two beautiful daughters of her own, we’ll ask what she hopes the world looks like by the time they become young women.

We chat about end-of-semester stress, upcoming holiday plans, and the traditions we look forward to every year. In this last episode of Pinpals, teammates of the Women's Bowling team, Corynne Bean, Whitney Goodman, Daylin Tolgo and Alysa Conley, recap their bowling season. In April, as the season drew to a close, KWC made the difficult decision to suspend the men’s and women’s bowling programs for the foreseeable future effective with the end of this academic year.
It’s important to note that for all impacted students on athletic scholarship, KWC will honor those commitments to enable them to graduate as scheduled. All student-athletes who elect to remain at KWC will continue to have access to the full complement of academic support and medical services, if they remain in good standing under Kentucky Wesleyan College rules and those circumstances allow. For those who wish to transfer to other institutions to complete their college athletics eligibility, we will be available to answer questions and provide advice on the necessary next steps.

In this episode, Dr. Thomas Mitzel is joined by Jim Coleman, Assistant Professor of Religion and Program Director at Kentucky Wesleyan College. He and his spouse, Tami, are a clergy couple in the United Methodist Church, have pastored churches in Georgia and Kentucky, and have three sons. Dr. Sinclair received his Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from the University of Tennessee. We celebrate the legacy of WKWC, Gary Drum and the college's dream of providing "Community Radio" to the city of Owensboro on the Campus. The radio station still broadcasts proudly on the campus and is proud to say we're still owned and operated by its original owner!! Last year's Panthers finished second in the G-MAC in both interceptions and defensive efficiency, and tallied 21 total sacks on the year. We're excited for this year!!!
