Today's guest was born to be an entrepreneur.

Aaron Straus' first business was raising meat rabbits at the age of 7 on his family farm near Strasbourg, SK and by the age of 11, using money earned from his paper route, he got into the purebred Katahdin sheep business.

He went on to study Agriculture at the U of S and purchased his first section of farmland. Following his convocation in 2003, he returned home to farm full time running a commercial cattle / meat sheep / and grain operation.

Following the passing of his parents and the ensueing labour shortage on the farm he made the decision to leave farming and moved to Regina. In 2011 he purchased City Collateral from his retiring Uncle & Aunt and continued to operate the business until 2022.

In 2017, he decided to diversify and open Cache Tactical Supply. Outside of business, Aaron has a broad range of interests including blacksmithing & knifemaking, hunting, fishing, woodworking and photography. Aaron and Stephanie live on an acreage near Regina and enjoy the getaway from the hustle of city life.

Our fur babies don't understand. 😟 They've had constant companionship and often extra attention as we did meetings from the couch and slept in a little later because no one knew if you still had your pajama pants on in a Zoom meeting. 🐶

Little wonder they expect to go everywhere and do everything; it's been their routine.

As a pet parent, I can attest that if I don't have my walking shoes on bright and early, I will get woke up by a cold nose or a paw in the face ~ no sleeping in allowed here! 🐾

Amber Goodwyn is the acting Executive Director at 91.3FM, CJTR Regina Community Radio on Treaty 4 land / in Regina, SK. Before moving to Regina in 2012 she was the Music Coordinator and Music Librarian at CKUT 90.3FM in Montreal, as well as a volunteer host.

She’s a new member of the Swamp Fest music festival Board of Directors and has previously served on the boards of Girls Rock Regina and Holophon Audio Arts. She has also served on various juries for music and arts funding and has written about music and the arts as a freelancer for Prairie Dog Magazine, Broken Pencil and other publications.

In her art life she’s a multidisciplinary artist with active performance, film and video, writing and music practices. Currently she plays music in her experimental synth pop solo project Natural Sympathies and in the duo Dialtone, and used to play in the Montreal bands Cobra & Vulture and Nightwood.

Cari ran her first half marathon in 2005, and her first full marathon just one year later in 2006. Since then, she has been committed to training early nearly every morning, and to eating healthy to fuel her body through these workouts.

Despite her long-time commitment to her physical health, she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, at the end of 2018. Due to a radical hysterectomy to remove most of the tumor, followed by six months of chemotherapy, she was bedridden and unable to run. After being placed in remission in July of 2019, she immediately reached out to her running coach to slowly return to training. On Sunday February 9th, 2020, she ran her first half marathon since beating cancer.

Donna Crooks' personal vision is to make a difference in the lives of others through her work and in her life. She is the Founder & Chief at Brain Snacks Co, a platform business with a mission to help close the gender gap by supporting women with core services, like study and workspace, supervised play for children, networking, career coaching, and professional development.

Donna's career accelerated early. Despite her success, she found she lost ground in her career when she started her family. When she returned to work from her first two maternity leaves, her position was gone both times. Donna began to focus on the necessity for women to have choices, financial freedom, autonomy and capacity to weather adversity. Thinking of this problem, she began to wonder how she could diversify her own career and financial stability while designing a business that would help women be successful in managing all the demands of work and family. Thus, the idea for Brain Snacks Co was born.

The Brain Snacks Co experience is all about choices for women from all walks of life, mothers and careerists, women on maternity leave, Indigenous women, women of colour, newcomers, and members of our LGBTQ+ communities. Michelle is a passionate teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing in Regina. When one of her twin sons was born Deaf she began classes in American Sign Language (ASL). She fell in love with the language and the community; she has been an invaluable advocate and mentor to Saskatchewan’s Deaf community ever since.

She is an administrative team member and former vice-president of Deaf Crows Collective, a Deaf Theatre troupe. She is involved with the development and execution of performances and Art installations that connect the Deaf and Hearing worlds. She volunteers her time interpreting, and manages the media relations of the troupe. She is current vice-president of Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services. She organizes events for Deaf youth and their families such as a 2014 Signing Time Concert and Parent Workshop and the annual DHH children’s Christmas Party.

Sarah is the leader of KPMG's Tax Services practice in Regina. Throughout the past 21 years, Sarah has specialized in helping owner-managed businesses and entrepreneurs as their business adviser. Working closely with her clients, Sarah provides insight to help them grow their business, minimize tax and meet their organizational objectives. She is dedicated to assisting family owned and operated businesses to effectively deal with their unique management challenges. Her goal is to help guide family businesses in their day-to-day operations with a focus on the continuity of the family business.

In addition to her work at KPMG, Sarah is very active in her community. She has been involved in a number of organizations in the past, including the Saskatchewan Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs group in Regina, as well as served on several Boards, such as the Boards of SaskFilm, the Regina chapter of the Family Enterprise Exchange (FEX), and with the Regina Women's Network as their Vice-President of Programming. She is currently involved with the Martin Family Initiative and sits on the board of Synchro Regina. She is also the Chair of the Regina Chamber of Commerce.

Sharon Leibel is a family physician and Child Abuse Consultant in Regina. A Saskatchewan girl through and through, Saskatchewan is where she completed all of her university and medical training! Despite her humble nature, Sharon has been recognized for her accomplishments through multiple awards and scholarships and graduated with Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine in 1983. Her training and experience in the field of Child Abuse spans more than 30 years and she has been instrumental in creating the first and only Child Maltreatment Team in Saskatchewan.

Sharon has been the medical forensic examiner in over 1000 child abuse cases and spent more than 100,000 hours on call for the Child abuse Team. She has trained and mentored over 20 team members and hundreds of physicians in training, police officers, social workers, nurses, court prosecutors and judges. Sharon actively engages these team members through ongoing educational sessions and committee work. Although this work is very difficult, she is able to continue day in and day out with a positive attitude and never lose her humanity. Sharon is an advocate and innovator who tirelessly shares her knowledge and passion for children in need.

Madhu Kumar was born and raised in India where she received her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees. Kumar earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Regina with Great Distinction in 2017. Her oil portraits, paintings of horses, and landscapes have been in juried exhibitions in Ottawa and Regina.

Her current work is an ongoing series of large-scale paintings on the experience of immigrant women in Canada, and she is involved in David Garneau’s Edmonton based Tawatina Bridge art project. Madhu has exhibited her work in over thirty solo and group exhibits.

When asked about her artistic practice, she talks about the power of storytelling to connect and empower us. When she collaborates with the women who are portrayed in her work, she holds dearly to the values of creating a safe space and solidarity. It is her hope that the stories will illuminate women’s capabilities, imagination and resilience.

Having grown up in southern India, the concept of eating out of Areca Palm Leaf tableware was quite familiar to them - a simple yet very effective alternative to conventional disposable materials. Dr. Emily Bamforth joins us today on the Secret Life of Entrepreneurs in our series, Women in Leadership, to talk about her secrets of success and how she has enjoyed the "thrill of the dig" since early childhood.

The winner of the 2019 Award for Science with the YWCA of Regina, Emily has long had a passion for science and encouraging more women to pursue STEM careers. Emily is a paleontologist with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, where she works primarily out of the T.Rex Discovery Centre in Eastend, SK.

During research for her masters degree, Bamforth discovered and named three new fossil species. While completing fieldwork in Grasslands National Park for her PhD, she collected and catalogued more than 14,000 fossils.

Today is our second episode in the Women in Leadership series and our guest today is Nigora Yulyakshieva. Nigora was the winner of the YWCA of Regina's Women of Distinction Award for Mentorship. A political refugee, Nigora arrived in Regina in 1999 with her husband and two small children, seven months pregnant and not knowing any English.

She had an engineering degree in Uzbekistan, but was told she may never work in her field in Canada. She enrolled at SIAST to study Canadian engineering, then obtained her bachelor of science in industrial and civil engineering in 2002 and professional engineering status one year later.

She currently serves as the City of Regina’s manager of roadway preservation.
