The future has always been inextricable from urban planning. As the sea level rises and the effects of climate change become harder to ignore, plans for futuristic urban centers like Saudi Arabia’s mirrored megacity (The Line) and a floating city in the Maldives make for splashy headlines. Our modern cities—sources of greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution, overcrowding and urban sprawl—pale in comparison. Bruno Carvalho argues in THE INVENTION OF THE FUTURE that while modern-day New York City may not be designed for a period of climate emergency, its nineteenth-century architects certainly had the future in mind when laying out the plans.
Carvalho details the feats of engineering that restored Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake, transformed Paris from a medieval city into a grand metropolis, and made sprawling cities like Manhattan easier to plan and develop via the implementation of a grid system. He considers how technological innovations (steel, steam-powered engines, automobiles) and social change (the abolition of slavery, the overthrow of colonial rule) led to the rapid growth and expansion of cities in the global South, from Buenos Aires to Brasilia to Lagos.
The future may appear bleak from our vantage point, but “there is a lot of space for reinvention,” Carvalho writes, “and if we must reinvent, there might be no better place to look than the history of the future.”
Bruno Carvalho is a professor at Harvard University, where he teaches courses on cities. He is the author of Porous City: A Cultural History of Rio de Janeiro.

Richard Francis-Jones is one of Australia’s most distinguished contemporary architects. As Design Director of fjcstudio, he leads the design of the practice’s most significant projects, recognized nationally and internationally for their architectural excellence and contribution to the public domain.
Richard has been the recipient of numerous international architecture awards, including World Building of the Year (World Architecture Festival), multiple WAF Office and Exhibition awards, the AIA International Architecture Award, the RIBA International Award, the NZIA Architecture Medal, the International Public Library of the Year Award (Danish Agency of Culture), and multiple International Architecture Awards from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. Today we are speaking with Dr. Laura Freid, the President of Maine College of Art and Design and a leader in arts advocacy. Applications to MECA&D’s BFA program increased by 53% from 2016 to 2019, accompanied by a 24% increase in selectivity and a 7% increase in the diversity of the incoming class. The MFA program more than doubled from 17 to 38 students in the same timeframe.
Previously, Dr. Fried served as CEO and Executive Director of Silkroad for more than a decade. She also served as executive producer of the internationally acclaimed feature documentary “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.”
Prior to joining Silkroad, Dr. Freid was executive vice president for public affairs and university relations at Brown University. Heagi (Hyeung Seok) Kang, AIA, is a co-founder and design principal at Andmore Partners in Los Angeles, which he started in 2015 with Sean Mo. His professional career began with an internship at Eric Own Moss Architects and evolved into 14 years of residential and commercial experience working at GMPA Architects (previously GMP), Mix Studioworks, and AC Martin + TSM. Prior to studying architecture, Heagi navigated several different fields, starting from social welfare at Yonsei University in Seoul and anthropology and fine art at the University of Oregon (Eugene). While he was in the master’s program at Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles, he took two international programs, collaborating with a studio at The Berlage in Rotterdam and another in Kyoto Seika University in Japan.
Heagi's interdisciplinary studies and varied hands-on architectural experiences allow him to shape his own way of seeing a design. His fundamental process provides a deeper understanding and critical path of thinking compared to the typical design process. Heagi believes that creativity originates from finding, discovering, and combining two or more different things, rather than inventing a new thing that never existed. In that sense, as an architect, he values hidden or ignored elements that can open the possibilities to embrace our lifestyle through the quality of spaces. Heagi also approaches “architecture as a developer,” which is not the traditional role of the architect. He believes this approach helps find a balance between financial feasibility and architectural rightness.

In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with Paul Tang, founding principal of Verse Design LA and a partner in Verse Design Shanghai. Paul earned a B.Arch from USC and his M.Arch from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Inspired by academia, Paul taught architecture at USC for 19 years. He was appointed as the first Academic Director of USC American Academy in China. That visibility and credibility led to several building-design opportunities in China. Propelled by that momentum, Paul returned to Los Angeles and co-founded Verse Design LA with fellow former USC professor Courtenay Bauer. The firm specializes in urban, commercial, residential, and institutional projects and planning. To date, it has designed more than 5 million square feet of built environments.
Paul shares insights on working in US and abroad. He will also discuss those influences that impact his design to include technology. More specifically, the phenomenon of technology and AI and how it impacts our lifestyle and therefore architecture.

Stephen Schafer (AKA: Schäf) specializes in architectural photography of our inherited environment. Having completed over one hundred large format documentations to date, Schafer is an expert in the documentation of buildings and sites with a practiced understanding of historic structures. His work ranges from bridges and subway tunnels to skyscrapers and Spanish colonial adobes, documenting historic homes, cultural landscapes, and built technology projects in twenty states and on the island of Guam. These archival documentations are transmitted to the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) collections at the Library of Congress.

In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with Scott Johnson and Bill Fain, founding partners of Johnson Fain. They discuss the 25-year transformation of Oklahoma City Oil Field Number One into First Americans Museum (FAM), which honors the state’s 39 tribes. The project was highly collaborative and engaging, incorporating Native American advisors to help shape the overall design approach. Conceptually, FAM is a spiral that begins in the earth and ascends to the heavens. The museum’s western arc features permanent and rotating exhibitions, and its northern arc houses theaters, retail, dining, and other services necessary in modern museums.
Architect and urban designer Bill Fain, FAIA, directs master planning and urban design at Johnson Fain. He has won several national AIA and Progressive Architecture awards for projects including Mission Bay in San Francisco, Beijing’s Central Business District, and the Greenways Plan for Los Angeles. Bill has received two Fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts and Humanities and was the recipient of a Rome Prize Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome, Italy. He has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from UC Berkeley and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Firm partner and creative lead Scott Johnson, FAIA, has designed nearly 100 built projects in the past 20 years. Further, he has taught and lectured at various universities, including directing the Master of Architecture Programs at the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture. Scott is the author of Essays on the Tall Building and the City, Performative Skyscraper Tall Building Design Now, The Big Idea: Criticality and Practice in Contemporary Architecture, Tall Building: Imagining the Skyscraper, and Tectonics of Place: The Architecture of Johnson Fain. He holds a BA in Architecture from UC Berkeley and a Master in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Bill and Scott met at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 1987, they acquired renowned Los Angeles firm Pereira Associates, rebranding it Johnson Fain.

In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with Jessie Carroll, Architect and Founding Principal of Jessie Carroll Architect. We talk extensively about the process of starting an architecture firm from the ground up and the benefits of remaining a small practice. We also touch on the Jessie's client-centered approach as well as some of her favorite materials to use when designing a home.
In 2020, Jessie Carroll was the first female architect in Maine to be recognized by the 5 Under 40 regional award for design excellence by New England Home Magazine. Her design work has been recognized locally through AIA Maine design awards with national jurists in 2021 and 2018. In 2017, Jessie was recognized nationally with the Red Diamond Achievement Award for Family Farmhouse. Upon earning her Master of Architecture degree, Jessie received the highest design honor at Northeastern University in 2010.
Prior to establishing JCA, Jessie Carroll served as an associate Principal at Whitten Architects based in Portland, Maine. There she designed custom homes across New England for 8 years. Before moving to Maine, she managed residential construction in Cape Cod Massachusetts. She also practiced in Boston-based firms including Utile, HMFH, and Cannon Design.
Jessie has given back to the architectural community through her involvement in professional organizations, teaching, and speaking engagements. She is currently acting treasurer, design committee member, and member on the executive board of directors at AIA Maine. She has also taught two classes per year for three consecutive years at University of Maine Augusta as adjunct faculty.

Reflect Project UPDATE:
In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with Brandon Brown, restorative justice scholar, Ph.D candidate, adjunct faculty at UMA /Colby College and former prison inmate.
Back in 2013 Brandon was part of a personal project we started called the Reflect Project. The idea was to photograph inmates at the Maine State Prison and have them write a letter to their younger selves. We then took the written letters and composited each one around the corresponding portrait, creating a more dynamic viewing experience at the subsequent gallery showing. Fast forward to present day (2022) and Brandon has been released from prison after serving more than then years behind bars. In this follow up interview with Brandon, we discuss his time in prison, the impact the Reflect Project had on him, and the work he is currently doing now that he has been released.

Architecture Unbound // Joseph Giovannini. In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with writer and design-firm owner Joseph Giovannini, whose latest book is Architecture Unbound: A Century of the Disruptive Avant-Garde (Rizzoli, 2021). In it, Joseph examines the influence of twentieth-century avant-garde movements on the contemporary architectural landscape through the work of “disruptors” such as Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, and Zaha Hadid. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in criticism three times, Joseph has written thousands of articles on architecture, design, and urbanism for The New York Times, Art in America, Architect Magazine, The New York Review of Books, and Vanity Fair, among others. He has served as the architecture critic for New York Magazine, Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and Los Angeles Review of Books. Joseph was a staff reporter for The New York Times, to which he still contributes. A Yale graduate, Joseph also has an M.A. in French Language and Literature from Middlebury College, earned through studies at the Sorbonne, and an M.Arch from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. He has taught studios, mostly in graduate programs, at Columbia University, Pratt Institute, Southern California Institute of Architecture, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Southern California, University of Innsbruck, and Harvard University, the Carpenter Center. Alan is a builder by trade and the owner and general manager of GO Logic LLC. Alan founded the business with architect Matthew O’Malia in 2008 with the sole purpose of designing and building Passive House buildings.
After finishing his degree at Brown University, Alan landed in Maine in the late ‘80s as an organic farm apprentice, then bought 75 acres of land and built his own house. From there his carpentry work evolved into a general contracting business where, in spite of some resistance, he encouraged as much energy-efficient design as possible. Eventually the high-performance concept caught on, and when Passive House arrived it codified much of what he’d been trying to do all those years.
Alan is a Certified Passive House Builder and Designer. He is secretary of the board of directors of Passive House Institute US and the Passive House Alliance US. He lives with his family on a farm in Belfast, Maine.

Tiarra Bell's Bio: The core of my work is an external reflection of my internal thoughts. I am interested in making furniture that does not only focus on aesthetics but rather creating a body of work that tells a story and communicates a message. I express the inexpressible by using my Biblical beliefs as a premise for my artistic expression. I'm able to translate those verbalized beliefs into something that is visual and tangible. I’m intrigued by how something that’s not visual, such as words, ideologies, or ethics can become something that you can plainly see, and touch.
David Duncan Morris is the Director of Design at an award-winning architecture firm in Portland, Maine. Starting from a young age David’s love for houses is what inspired him to pursue architecture and he was often seen drawing whenever he could. Outside his professional life, he picks up his paper, pencils and watercolors to feed his own creative drive and to keep his love of drawing alive. The intent of his drawings is not to perfectly render a building but to capture the spirit of the building in a loose and expressive manner. He prefers to draw on site, but if distance and weather prevents this he can draw from photographs. David lives with his partner Justin, and their dog in the beautiful coastal town of Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Michael DiTullo has been designing iconic products for some of the world’s biggest brands for more than 20 years. He has worked with Nike, Google, Honda, Timex, Chantal, Converse, Motorola and has been collaborating with Kirei since 2019. Prior to starting his eponymous design studio Michael, was Chief Design Officer for Sound United, parent company of Denon, Marantz, Polk, and Definitive Technology, where he oversaw industrial design, UX, packaging, product management, and marketing creative. He also spent several years as creative director for frog design’s San Francisco studio and nearly a decade at Nike where he worked directly with Michael Jordan, Carmelo Anthony, Derek Jeter, and Dwayne Wade.
DiTullo has sat on the ascensions board to SFMoMA, the board of directors for The Design Foundation and is a strategy advisor to Offsite, a disruptive take on design education. Michael’s work has won numerous awards and has been printed in publications like Metropolis and Wallpaper. He has been featured in the books “Dieter Rams: As Little Design As Possible” and “Breaking In” and has published his own book “365: One Year Of Design Sketching Every Day”. In 2017 DiTullo founded “Real Designers Ship” and organization dedicated to celebrating designer’s whose work makes it into production. Michael is listed on over 30 patents and has won numerous awards including the IDSA’s special lifetime achievement award for contributions to the design industry, an award won by design luminaries such as Jonathan Ive, Charles Eames, and Raymond Loewy.

She joined Knickerbocker Group to continue her passion—designing spaces that inspire practicality, leisure, and comfort, while connecting an interior environment with its surrounding influences.
Angie is a graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. She started working in the commercial interior design industry before realizing she enjoyed designing an array of styles and projects, including residential spaces.
She has worked at firms in Boston, Cape Cod, and Washington D.C., however she prefers the ease and life found in Maine’s coastal communities. She completed her NCIDQ exam and LEED accreditation to further her knowledge of interior and sustainable design best practices.

Born in NYC and raised in both Venice Beach, California and Peaks Island, Maine, Tima brings a breadth of experience and leadership to Relativity Architects. He studied at Rice University and the Southern California Institute for Architecture. His passion of art led him to the practice of architecture as a launching point to explore the three dimensional space within his own paintings. In addition to his American studies, Tima has spent considerable time studying throughout Europe. He completed a one year artist-in-residency in Israel. Since then, Tima has pursued the exploration of art and the built environment through his own practice of architecture and design. From straw-bale construction to various high-end hospitality projects and from motion picture studios to master plans, he is vigilant throughout the process to achieve balance between quality, style and efficiency. Tima was also an adjunct professor at Woodbury University and acts as a guest juror at several Los Angeles universities.
As co-founding Principal of RA, Tima continues to explore the physicality of art and architecture through his work with RA. He has received an AIA scholarship as well as two AIA Hospitality Design awards. Additionally, Tima is the recipient of both the Individual Boutique 18 Design Award and the Boutique 18 Design Restaurant Award.

In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with Will Winkelman, Founding Principal of Winkelman Architecture.
Will has been a registered architect in Maine since 1989. A member of the AIA, he has been practicing architecture for more than 35 years, most of that time focused on his core passion, residential work.
Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Will graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelors degree in Architecture in 1982. From there he moved to San Francisco before discovering Peaks Island, off the coast of Portland, in the mid 1980’s. It has been his home ever since.
Will spent two decades working in Portland offices during which time he found that working with residential clients offered the connection essential for him to feel deeply engaged. In the spring of 2007 Will established Winkelman Architecture to further that pursuit. A founding ideal of the practice was to keep it small, limiting the staff count to 10 or less, with the goal of keeping his hand collaboratively engaged in the design conversation and details of the office’s flow of projects.

It was an incredible pleasure to sit down with William for a conversation, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
William Pedersen is the founding design partner of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), which he started with A. Eugene Kohn and Sheldon Fox in 1976. Fourteen years later, they became the youngest firm to receive the National AIA Firm Award for design excellence. Bill’s personal honors include the Rome Prize in Architecture in 1965, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize from the American Academy and the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the University of Minnesota’s Alumni Achievement Award, the Gold Medal from the national architectural fraternity, Tau Sigma, the Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), and the Medal of Honor from the AIA of New York. He was recently elected as a member of the National Academy of Design and was awarded the 2013 International Award by The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA).
Bill lectures internationally and serves on academic and professional juries and symposia. He is on the Board of the University of Minnesota Foundation and has been a visiting professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, Columbia University, and Harvard University. He has held the Eero Saarinen Chair at Yale University and has also been the Otis Lecturer in Japan. In 1989, he was honored as the Herbert S. Greenward Distinguished Professor in Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has degrees in architecture from the University of Minnesota and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with Linda Meyers, Co-Founder of Wary Meyers, a soap and candle company based in southern Maine. Husband-and-wife team Wary Meyers started out in Brooklyn designing interiors for their friends and artsy-types. After a magazine column for Time Out New York and a book, they relocated to Maine, decorated their own Portland apartment which would grace many magazines and countless blogs, and still created interiors and installations back in the city. Feeling the desire to make a tangible product, they've taken their design sensibilities and infused them into enticingly scented candles and soaps, which they hand-make in their Cumberland home- working in an attached former beauty salon built for the previous lady-of-the-house in the 1980's. Both the candles and soaps are informed with the Meyers' playful wit and panache, one candle fragrant with cannabis and suntan oil, and their boldly striped soaps, loosely inspired by Italian design icon Ettore Sottsass's "Superboxes" in fact look more like a design object than anything else.

We continue Season 2 of Architecture, Design & Photography with a sit down interview with Painter & Muralist Ryan Adams. Ryan's background in traditional graffiti led him to creating large-scale mural work and hand lettered design and signage. His signature ‘gem’ style of work is a geometric breakdown of letter-forms with shadows and highlights included to create depth and movement throughout the pieces. His pieces tend to be bold, colorful and clever; often including statements within. Currently, Ryan co-owns and operates a hand painted signage business, designs for a brewery, paints murals any and everywhere and exhibits his work as often as possible.

A pioneer in leveraging technology to support design quality, he is currently chairman of buildingSMART International, where he pushes tirelessly for the global implementation of building information modeling (BIM).
