In James Chapter 5, James showed us that we are to pray at all times:
- When you're troubled, pray.
- When you're happy, pray.
- When you're sick, call the elders to pray over you.
- When you've sinned, confess your sins to God and others and pray.
But why prayer?
James tells us that the prayers of a righteous person (i.e. a follower of Jesus Christ who is forgiven of his/her sins) are powerful and effective. And just like Elijah prayed legendary prayers that God answered in miraculous ways, so can you.

Have you ever said this to yourself?
“If I just believe hard enough, God will heal me.” OR
“If I just have enough faith, God will heal my loved one.”
I mean, come on, we’ve probably all had it preached at us before…“If you just have enough faith you will be healed.” And they use James 5:15 to make their claim.
But then the healing never comes, and you’re left wondering what you did wrong 🤷♀️
I’ve been there. I know your frustration 😩
There is ONE word in the original Greek language that will completely change how you read this scripture and understand what God is doing in your life.
My prayer is that today’s quick, but powerful Bible study will help you grasp what James 5:15 means on a much deeper level.

The main theme of his letter is found in James 1:22 (NIV) Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. IN TODAY'S BIBLE STUDY:
James 5:12 (NIV): Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise, you will be condemned.
Today's Bible verse from James 5:12 seems to come out of the blue. In the last Bible Study Podcast, James talked about having patience in the face of persecution (James 5:10-11).
And immediately after James 5:12, James teaches about prayer.
But, today he talks about swearing in God's name. Just being honest here, I don't understand how this applies to the surrounding verses, and neither do most Biblical scholars.
But evidently James seems to think this is important for us to learn. So, we will take the time to dig deeper and understand more of James 5:12.

Many of us have memorized it.
Sports teams have it written on banners. Youth groups have it printed on t-shirts.
However, what most people don’t understand is that it doesn’t necessarily mean what they think it means.
Most people use this verse to cheer them onto victory. But that’s not at all what Paul is saying.

James 5:14-15 (NIV): Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.
In yesterday's Bible Podcast, we explored how an individual is to call out to God in prayer when they are afflicted or facing times of trouble. But, just as important as prayer, praise is also important. When you have something good happen to you, turn to God, and give Him the praise.
Now, today's Bible verse takes a different direction. James 5:14 gives us specific instructions on what to do when we are bedridden and in need of prayer.

Colossians 2:1, NIV: "I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally."We’ve been studying the incredible letter from Paul to the Colossians.
Last week, we learned that Paul faced severe persecution for teaching the gospel message of Christ.
His one goal is to present believers fully mature in Christ at the final judgment.
He said that he works hard teaching, correcting, and discipling.
The work is absolutely exhausting, but God’s power surges within Paul giving him the strength to continue his calling.
Paul continues today about his burden to spiritually fight for the believers in Colossae and in Laodicea.

Colossians 1:25 (NIV): I have become its (the gospel’s) servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness.”Paul has been showing us what it looks like to be a servant for God.
Yesterday, Paul showed us that suffering comes when we spread the Good News. While many of us would feel sorry for ourselves, Paul says that he rejoices in the suffering because he knows what he's helping strengthen Christ's Body.
Today, Paul teaches us about the word "commission." This word has some really cool history behind it, and once you learn it, this verse comes alive!

Colossians 1:24, NLT: "I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for his body, the church."***In Colossians 1:23 Paul encourages believers to stand strong and immovable in what they know to be true about Jesus Christ. Paul says he is a servant sent to proclaim that Truth to every creature under heaven.
And then he writes verse 24 and leaves us all scratching our heads.
The interpretation of this verse is heavily disputed, particularly when Paul mentions "Christ’s afflictions."

Colossians 1:22-23 (NIV)22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
In Colossians 1:22, Paul says that Christ’s death reconciled us back to God. And because of our belief in Christ, we are holy, without blemish, and free from accusation.
However… verse 23 begins with an interesting word “If…”
So, catch this here…you are pure and blameless, “if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.”Does this little 2-letter word "if" indicate that we can lose our salvation?
That's an interesting question.

Yesterday, we learned that it pleased God to reconcile us back to Him through Christ’s blood on the cross.
Paul continues with that idea today here in Colossians one verse 21.

Colossians 1:17 (NIV): He is before all things, and in him, all things hold together.Paul writes a letter to the Colossians to refute false teachings creeping into the fairly new church in Colossae. Before he barely begins writing, he breaks out into a theologically rich hymn about Jesus Christ starting in verse 15.

Why?

In the past 2 episodes, we learned to pray, "God, show me YOUR will (not mine). Teach me how to apply it to my life."
Today, we explore the 2nd request that Paul makes in his prayer: God, help me live a life worthy of you, and please you in every way.
The phrase "live a life" in the original Greek language gives us great insight in how to apply this prayer in our lives.
We will also look at what the Holy Spirit's job in this process and what is our job?

Colossians 1:2 (NKJV): To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.Do you ever doubt your identity? Like "Who am I really?"
I don't know about you, but there are times that I find myself calling myself worthless or stupid. Or I hear that tiny little voice from "the accuser" in my head saying, "Who do you think you are?"
But then I read today's verse and realize that none of those thoughts line up with God's Word.
So, who does God say you are?
Paul gives you 3 things that you can call yourself:
- You are a saint (yes, seriously!)
- You are faithful
- You are "in Christ"

Colossians 1:1 (NIV) Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother.
If you studied the book of Philippians with us, you might remember that Paul started that letter by identifying himself as a servant.
So, why does he identify himself as an apostle in this letter?
Also, notice that Paul states it is by the "will of God" that he is an apostle. If you just casually read this verse, you would miss a very important point that Paul makes. You definitely don't want to miss this!

They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.Paul has been teaching us that every time we sacrificially give, God credits our "spiritual" bank account.

More than anything, however, Paul is thrilled at what giving does for the giver. God sees you when you sacrificially give to another and rewards you accordingly.

Philippians 4:14–16 (NIV): 14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.
Paul walks a fine line in today’s verses. He has spent his entire letter telling the believers that joy and contentment come from your relationship with God and NOT in what you have in your physical world.
So, how does he handle thanking the church in Philippi for their generous financial gift? Because the truth be told, if I was reading this letter as a believer in Philippi, I might be a little offended that he didn’t really need the money that I sent.

Philippians 4:12–13 (NIV): 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.Philippians 4:13 is one of the most quoted and loved verses in the Bible. Many of us have memorized it.
Sports teams have it written on banners. Youth groups have it printed on t-shirts.
However, what most people don’t understand is that it doesn’t necessarily mean what they think it means.
Most people use this verse to cheer them onto victory. But that’s not at all what Paul is saying.

And the God of peace will be with you.Isn't it amazing that we still deal with the same mind "traps" that people 2,000 years ago dealt with? Our minds tend to get trapped on negative things like "will I have enough money?" or "I'll never be good enough to do what I want."

Philippians 4:1 (NIV): Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!”
Today, we start the final chapter of Philippians. Yay! I love this chapter. There are many wonderful verses that we have the honor of studying.
In the first verse of chapter 4, it’s as if Paul is reminiscing about the believers in Philippi. As he thinks about how blessed he is to have been a part of their Christian journey, he oozes joy into this sentience.
Paul calls them his “crown.” What an interesting way to describe someone you love. Lol. What exactly is he saying here?
Knowing the history and culture of that time will bring this verse alive.

Philippians 3:18–19 (NIV): 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.In Philippians chapter three, Paul appeals to the church in Philippi to follow his example as he pursues Christ above everything else in his life.
Paul knows that there are people who may appear to be followers of Christ, but in reality, they reject the true gospel message that Paul preaches.

In Yesterday's 2-minute Podcast We Learned About Epaphroditus:
- Epaphroditus most likely was a leader in the church at Philippi.
- He was sent to deliver a financial gift to Paul. As you may recall, Paul has been in house arrest awaiting trial in Rome. Even though he cannot work and he cannot go anywhere, he still must provide for himself. Could you imagine?? So, thankfully the church in Philippi sent money to help him out.
- Epaphroditus intended to stay and be Paul's personal servant. Unfortunately, he became deathly ill either on his way to Rome or while in Rome with Paul.
- He wanted to return home but was afraid of what the believers in Philippi would think of him quitting his service to Paul. So Paul writes a glowing testimonial of Epaphroditus.

Philippians 2:7 (NIV): rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likenessIn Chapter 2 of Philippians, Paul has been emphasizing the need for unity in the church in Philippi. The way to do that is to have a humble attitude that sees the needs of others as more important than our own. And the one who demonstrated that for us exactly was Jesus Christ himself.
Today, we tackle a challenging verse that has caused great debates over hundreds of years. The debate is over what exactly Paul meant when he wrote that Christ "emptied himself."
Does that mean he gave up his rights as God?
Or maybe even just became "less-God?"
If he gave up his rights, which rights were they?

Philippians 2:6 (ESV): Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be graspedIn Philippians Chapter 2, Paul has been encouraging the church in Philippi to humble themselves and remain unified. Paul was no stranger to suffering and persecution. He had been in and out of prison many times, but despite all of it, God was still able to use him mightily to advance the gospel message to the Gentiles.
In today's message, Paul encourages the believers in Philippi as they, too, are also facing suffering and persecution.

Philippians 1:21 (NIV): For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.This is the most gut-wrenching podcast I have ever recorded.
On Thursday evening, my best friend and the woman I am honored to call mom went to sleep on Earth and woke up in the arms of her Savior Friday morning. She finally won her 12-year battle with Alzheimer's. She was 71 years old.
Today, I will say goodbye to her.
I have never felt so many emotions over a period of a few days. I am thrilled that she is set free from the prison of her mind.
But, jealously, I want one more day with the incredible woman I knew 12 years ago before this cruel disease took her mind.
THIS WILL GET EASIER
When I had my first baby, 15 years ago, my mom came to stay with my husband and me for two weeks to help us through the many sleepless nights with a newborn.
I remember one early morning during her stay, seeing the exhaustion written on my face, she turned to me and said, "Julie, I promise this will get easier."
There have been so many times during the past 3 days when I've felt her loving presence...
Whether picking out her casket,
Writing her obituary,
Choosing her burial clothes,
Or surviving the sleepless nights while fighting the tears...
It's in those helpless moments that I hear her voice comforting me once again, "Julie, I promise this will get easier."
TODAY'S VERSE
Today's Bible verse exemplifies my mother's life beautifully. I am amazed at how God orchestrated that this would be the day we study this verse together.
As we've been studying the book of Philippians, we've learned that Paul is in prison in Rome awaiting trial before Caesar Nero.
Paul knew that he could live or he could die based upon the outcome of his trial, but to him, it didn't matter.
All Paul cared about was that Christ was magnified in his life.
My mother was the same way.
I pray today's verse impacts you the way that it has me.
And perhaps, today's verse will become your life verse, just as it did for my mother, the Apostle Paul, or countless other heroes of the faith.
