We have a very special 100th episode in store for you all!

This episode speaks for itself. Erica is a very special member and has been at FitTown for over 8 years. Outside of the gym she’s a massage therapist, but what she does goes far beyond that.

She considers herself a “Light Spreader” and in today’s episode we discuss how you can go beyond just a physical transformation both inside and outside the gym.

View Details

In the gym we either see a new person who specializes in something else like running or bodybuilding and they’re coming to our program for something more general or well rounded, or we see people who are already in our program and have developed their general fitness, but are looking to specialize in something more specific like run a marathon or do a triathlon.

We want to talk about this because when people come from strictly one direction or the other, they start to think of one as being “better” than the other, when that’s not really the case. In this episode, we’ll provide context around the generalist and specialist and the purposes they both serve.

We have so many clients come to us wondering if they should try a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Unlike other diets where people are focused mostly on aesthetic results, the vegan or vegetarian diet is usually paired with deeper intention.

However, putting this diet on a pedestal or marketing it as the healthiest diet out there isn't necessarily right. If the vegan diet is something you feel called to do or are passionate about, we want to support you in order to help you do it in a safe way.

There are many ways to have a more holistic diet without going vegan, and we'll discuss that in this episode.

Most people who come to us for nutrition advice are looking to improve their diet and see long term, lasting results.

However, they often hinder themselves and their success by either being too restrictive, or following "fad" diets rather than making necessary lifestyle changes.

In this episode, we'll discuss the reasons your diet may not be working for you. We'll go over the "All or Nothing" mindset, unhealthy relationships with food, the "Weekend Free for All", and the importance of having mental and emotional support along the way.

When our members want nutrition help at FitTown, they are not only solving a problem for themselves, but helping out the generations who will come after them. The more knowledge they have about proper nutrition, the healthier their kids, and their kids’ kids can be.

In this FitTown Show episode, Coach Tony and Coach Melissa go over 5 Simple Principles of Nutrition the whole family can follow. These are the same principles that we teach in our FitKids classes, and also use with our own kids at home.

Listen to this episode with your family and talk to each other about the principles you’d like to incorporate into your family’s life.

There’s a common misconception that you need to go all out every day in order to get fitter. Oftentimes, people come into the gym with a hardcore, “No Days Off” approach.

However, leaving some in the tank rather than physically exhausting yourself every single day can actually encourage proper technique and mechanics, reduce the risk of injury, and help you see improvement in your fitness faster.

In today’s episode of the FitTown Show we’re discussing why consistency trumps intensity, and why you shouldn’t go all out every single day.

It’s okay to have ebbs and flows in your workouts and nutrition.  You can’t expect to be perfect year-round.

Sometimes having intermittent breaks or changes in your routine is exactly what you need to come back renewed with energy. However, many people seem to have 2 modes as it relates to their health and fitness: On-track or Off-track.

During the summer, schedules shift. Kid's are out of school, trips are planned, your normal routine is thrown off and loses structure. In this podcast, we'll discuss how finding some sort of structure can actually bring you more freedom, and how just "doing something" is always better than nothing.

We also discuss FitTown Remote workouts, and how you can stay on track with your goals even if you're away or in an informal setting.

Coach Danielle is notorious for eating the same thing over… and over again.

But that’s why she’s so successful with her nutrition, and we want people to see that.

It’s not that her meals are boring, they’re just simple. She takes out the decision making and willpower and loves whipping meals together in less than 10 minutes.

As a mom of two who are 2 and under working full time, she doesn’t have the time to do extensive meal prep, so she understands a busy schedule and is able to tailor her meals toward her goals, while keeping them as simple as possible (and still delicious!)

People are often hesitant to do nutrition coaching because they think it’ll make their life more complex or their grocery bill more expensive. But that’s actually the opposite of what we do here at FitTown, and one of the reasons we love having Danielle as a nutritionist on staff.

In this episode of the FitTown Show we discuss why simplicity is the key to long term success.

Often times when an injury occurs, the situation that led to the injury has been building for months or years, but there is usually a specific incident that becomes the straw that breaks the camel's back.

It would be easy to blame that specific incident for the injury; that last pull up or deadlift, awkwardly trying to pick up your child, or trying to sprint too hard in a pick up basketball game.

In order to reverse pain and injuries though, we need to understand that the incident that caused the injury is likely a symptom of many underlying and unaddressed issues.

Rest and surgery can be part of the recovery process, but if we don't address the root cause of the injury, then we are likely to end up recreating a similar injury again.

In today's podcast, Coach Jack and Coach Andrew discuss why injuries happen and the key principles that you need to understand to resolve your pain issues for good.

On Saturday, June 18th, they will be running a pain-free lower body seminar at the gym, to help clients who suffer from knee, ankle, achilles, or shin splint issues.

This episode revolves around creating a long term and sustainable focus around your health.

You often hear about having an investment mindset from a financial standpoint, but how does that apply to your health? So many times in life we treat everything like a trade off. I do ’this’ so I expect ‘that’. I pay ’this much’, so I expect ‘that much’ in return.

In this episode we’ll discuss how to set yourself up to see results that are greater than you could ever imagine.

As a fitness facility, nutrition is often at the forefront of what we discuss and what we do.

It's common to hear the phrase, "everything in moderation" when discussing nutrition. However, most people don’t actually understand what moderation looks like. If we actually broke down the volume or macros of what they were consuming, it’s a much larger portion of their total calories/intake. We might think a Starbucks drink and a cookie is moderation, not realizing we just consumed nearly 1000 calories.

Usually when people are using the phrase everything in moderation, its used as a justification for eating unhealthy foods more than they should. (fried foods, fast food, sweets, alcohol, chips, soda, etc)

Most people don’t have a strong enough foundation of eating real food, and therefore aren’t actually eating unhealthy “in moderation”.  That's why we believe it's important to strengthen your baseline first.

In this episode of the FitTown Show, we discuss the pros and cons of “everything in moderation”, how to calibrate this phrase to serve you, not limit you, and what you need to know in order to effectively apply this advice.

Recently we did the Deadly Duo, and we got feedback from some members saying it was one of the most difficult fitness challenges they’ve endured.

Our response: “Good!”

Mind you… there were no injuries. They weren’t “overdoing it”. They got through it, but it wasn’t easy. It was super challenging and out of their comfort zones. But the reward outweighed the risk.

Hard things build confidence. Hard things build strength, and resilience. It’s easy to keep yourself in the box of comfortability, but we believe you’re so much more than that.

In this episode of the FitTown Show, we’ll discuss why we love doing hard things, and why we’d love for you to join us in challenging yourself, both inside and outside the gym.

We’ve come across a lot of situations with clients lately where they have these little nuances they’re questioning about their routine while ignoring the bigger basics. Getting caught up in the chase for perfection will get in the way of doing things that are enough to reach your goals.

One thing we’ve seen a lot is “I heard XYZ is bad for me”. Usually the answer is “not as bad as you think”. It all depends on context. Having one "bad" meal, can be just that. Or you can let it derail your day. You don't have to eat or be perfect to see success! In fact, if perfection is what you're aiming for, you're much more likely to fail.

We’ll also discus our 40 Days Fitter FREE Challenge, what it entails, and why we think EVERYBODY can benefit from joining (even if you’re not a member!)

Success doesn’t look like hitting everything perfectly every 40 days. It means tracking them for 40 days. This challenge is built around accountability, consistency and honesty. After a month long FitTown Show hiatus, we’re back with our first episode in December!

We’re adamant about reducing the risk of injury in classes as much as possible, and are big believers that prevention is the best tool. We’re also very grateful to have resources such as Zach Summers, DPT in our building to give us tips on how to best serve members who have had serious injuries or surgeries.

With that being said, we do have athletes that have either lingering or current injuries. Since each individual situation differs, we’ll discuss when you can fix injuries with a coach, and when we’ll refer you to a physical therapist or orthopedic. We’ll talk about acute versus chronic injuries, and how to come back post injury.

Here at FitTown we're big fans of the InBody machine as a tool to measure progress.

We often hear members, both new and old, express their frustrations with the number they see on the traditional scale.

But the number on the scale simply does not reflect what you're actually "made of".

In this episode Andrew sits down with Coach Mel and Coach Danielle to discuss why we use the InBody machine to measure progress as it relates to weight loss and muscle gain, and why it's so superior to the traditional scale. We talk about what the InBody is, how to understand your readings, and why BMI is mostly a B.S. number.

All successful people have had a coach at some point in their life.

This could be an in person coach, a remote coach, or even informal coaches through books or podcasts.

Believe it or not, though, we as coaches want to see you grow to the point that you don’t need us in order to be successful.

In order to get to that point, you need to be capable of coaching yourself. Having a coach becomes a bonus, instead of something you have to rely on in order to see success.

In this episode, Andrew and Tony sit down to discuss how to coach yourself through your goals.

Whether it’s related to work, family, weight loss or lifestyle, people usually think of what they’re going to add into their life when they want to achieve a goal.

This may include making time for the gym, grocery shopping, or meal prepping if your goal is related to health or nutrition.

But adding things to your life means that other things will inevitably need to be eliminated. There is only so much time in a day, and so many hours in a week. What are the things you spend time on that aren’t actively making you better? In this episode, we discuss both successful and unsuccessful personal experiences of what and when we eliminated certain things.

What are you willing to eliminate in order to reach your goals?

Today we're bringing you Episode 2 of our All In Series!

Last time we discussed how to maximize the 168 hours in a week, and today we're here to discuss how having strong WHY's can impact your transformation.

We've started asking every prospect who walks in our doors to write down their 5 why's. Usually one of these is pretty standard (example: I want to lose x number of pounds), but for the most part, they're much deeper than that. Some want to be a better parent, a better spouse, more productive at work or have more energy. Others want to get their anxiety under control, be happy when they look in the mirror, or simply gain back confidence they've lost. When people take the time to look inside and discover what their why's really are, it allows us to be better coaches and connect with clients on a more personal level.

Finding the things that motivate you on a deeper level sets you up for success. Having a reason beyond aesthetics to improve is what keeps you from hitting snooze on your alarm, and what eventually gets you the results you desire.

"I'll transition when I can lift X amount of weight"

"The people in FTX are so intimidating, so I'm scared!"

"I'm not ready to transition because I can't do pull-ups"

There are both legitimate and illegitimate reasons to wait to transition from BeachFit to FTX. In part one of this 2 part episode, we'll start discussing some of the reasons people bring to the table, and why you should or shouldn't give FTX a go!

When Dom joined us in July of 2020, he started with our 40 Days to Fit Program. He was committed to the fitness side over the course of those 40 days, but on day 40 did an Inbody scan only to realize he had lost one pound total. He felt defeated, and left FitTown. We didn't see him again until 6 months later, and in January 2021 Dom walked in with a fire under his feet, ready to make a huge change.

After watching a couple friends pass away in their early 30's, Dom was concerned about his longevity. He knew the lifestyle he was living was pointing in that direction, and he didn't want the people he loved to lose him. Dom not only started doing BeachFit classes every morning, but he also completely changed his nutrition and set realistic goals for himself. Since January, Dom has lost 60 pounds and is down 20% body fat.

In this episode of the FItTown Show, Andrew sits down with Dom to discuss his passions, his goals, and how he's managed to completely change his life and become the energetic, health-focused Dom we know today.

"I don't count the sit-ups. I only start counting when it starts hurting because they're the only ones that count. That's what makes you a champion." - Muhammad Ali

In this episode, Coach Tony & Coach Austin talk about the importance of seeking out positive adaptations inside and outside the gym. We love talking about “effort” and prioritizing the effort over the outcome as you keep a growth mindset approach. But sometimes effort falls short as it can be manipulated by the user.

We sometimes decide what our best effort is going to be before the workout even begins. Or we decide what our workout will be because that’s what we feel like today. We may take a polite pass on what was written as the FTX or BeachFit workout of the day. Encouraging our athletes to have autonomy over their fitness and listen to their bodies is something we’ll always recommend...but we don’t want them doing it at the expense of adaptation.

Adaptation is the process our bodies go through to get better suited to our environment. We purposely place ourselves into a hard environment like our workouts so that we adapt and get stronger. Similarly, a life of hitting the couch hard after work each night and binging 2-3 hours of Netflix creates an adaptation as well. Not a good one.

Coach Tony shares how all of his recent nagging injuries have come from negative adaptations from putting his body in awkward positions for extended periods of time. We can choose each day whether to seek out positive adaptations or negative ones for our health. Give this episode a listen and think about what adaptations you’ll seek out this week.

This week Coach Danielle joins the FitTown Show with more nutrition knowledge bombs!

In this specific episode, she and Coach Andrew will be discussing the 10 keys to losing fat. We see so many people who come to us because they are looking to lose weight. Many are looking to lose a massive amount, and have tried (or want to try) very restrictive diets because they feel that the key to weight loss is an all or nothing approach.

Here at FitTown we believe that creating healthy habits and a solid foundation are the keys to long term success and longevity. When you have these habits in place, they're a safety net for you when you veer off track, and we believe they allow for lifelong success.

In this episode, Coach Austin and Coach Andrew sit down to discuss the 6 types of exercise everyone should be doing.

The goal of this episode is to give you guys a more complete view on exercise. We want it to be something you can explore and enjoy doing, instead of it being a way to punish yourself for eating badly, or just to burn calories. Exercise should be fun.

We'll discuss how to move, and how to maximize your movement outside the gym to support what you’re doing inside the gym.

We hope this framework will give you the tools to get better results, whatever your goals may be.

For the next 5 weeks, we're shifting our mindset focus to the word PLAY.

We've covered Confidence, Patience, and Perseverance so far, and we think PLAY is a good counterbalance to our previous focuses. We want you all to have fun in your workouts, and also feel grateful for the opportunity to come in, enjoy yourself, and get a good, fun sweat in.

The definition of play is, "Engaging in activity for enjoyment or recreation, rather than a serious or practical purpose. Anything done purely for fun."

We often talk about workout out for longevity, to meet certain goals, or focus on the seriousness of the role of exercise in our lives. For the next 5 weeks, we want you to simply have fun in your workout. We want you to find the joy in exercise. PLAY is something that's very important in our lives, and that many adults have lost. In this episode, we want to discuss how to plan play into your life, any why it's vital to a happy, healthy life.

We're excited to introduce our new Superhuman System!

What is the Superhuman System? It's a tiered system to gauge where you are, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and a guideline to set attainable goals for yourself. This is a variation of a martial arts system, where you essentially "Level Up" as you improve your fitness. The Superhuman System takes movements you see everyday in class, and adds levels to them. For example, if your goal is to do a strict pull up, you may achieve a 30 second hang on the bar (Level 1) first, and work your way up to strict pull ups and beyond. We want well-rounded functional fitness, and believe this system will give members a concrete view on where they're at and where they want to go.

In this episode of the FitTown Show, we'll discuss the different levels, how the testing and progress will be incorporated into class, and why we're introducing it in FTX before BeachFit.

We'll cover the focus on foundational over sport-based movements and why we set up the strength tests relative to bodyweight instead of using absolutes.

If you’ve ever given up on something because the disapproval of others was too great to bear, this episode is DEFINITELY for you.

Coach Tony shares his personal experience with being a people pleaser, a #2 on the enneagram, and always striving for others approval. He will help you realize in this episode, the only approval rating that matters, is your own, of yourself. He points out how great business visionaries found a way to ignore disapproval and transform our worlds as we know it. Had it not been for Steve Jobs or Walt Disney’s ability to persevere, we may not have some of the coolest things there is in this world.

Perseverance comes from within, and can’t be outsourced.

We often talk about what to eat, and how much to eat, but we rarely discuss how we’re eating.

For some people, mindless eating is something they really struggle with. In this episode of the FitTown Show, Coach Danielle sits down with Coach Andrew to discuss how to listen to and be in tune with your body.

We live in a culture of overconsumption, and it's become exceedingly more difficult for people to tell the difference between hunger, thirst or cravings.

Throughout this episode, we'll discuss how to mindfully eat. Some ways you can mindfully eat include honoring your hunger cues, putting your fork down between bites, savoring each bite, checking in with cravings, and not multitasking during eating.

Andrew Sheffler has been a member at FitTown for almost a year, and today he joins the podcast to discuss his fitness and weight loss journey.

Andrew's journey is incredibly unique. We actually met him almost 2 years ago during a No Sweat Intro, and he made it his mission to lose 100 pounds before joining FitTown. Usually when people tell us this, we never see them again, but in Andrew's case he followed through and walked in our doors ready to signup in June 2020 after meeting his goal.

Since then he has transformed his body and mind even more. After suffering from crippling anxiety over the years, Andrew is anxiety free and crushing 5-6 workouts a week. He's started Nutrition Coaching with Coach Danielle, and put on muscle while losing another 20 pounds.

In this episode, Andrew talks about his continual journey, how his simple "Why" behind starting proved to be one of the most powerful tools, and how he's transformed as a dad, husband, and person overall.

As we head into our final week with a focus on the character trait “Patience”, we thought it would be beneficial to discuss the importance of pacing.

There are often misconceptions athletes have regarding pacing that we feel can be cleaned up and improve, and overall give you a better workout experience.

Often times people equate pacing with lack of effort, when in reality it’s the opposite. Pacing not only allows you to perform better and get the most out of workouts, but it can also be a huge tool for stronger recovery.

In this week’s episode, Andrew and Tony discuss the biggest misconceptions and mistakes athletes make regarding pacing.

Today, Andrew and Mo sit down to talk about competing versus winning. We'll discuss competing in a healthy way, versus competing in an unhealthy way.

Over the past few years we've shifted our focus and evolved away from the competitive side of CrossFit, and are no longer a CrossFit affiliate. We still embrace, love, and see a lot of positives in competition, and want to take this episode to discuss the positives we see in competition in our gym. We'll also talk about how we believe that focusing too much on winning actually takes away from the heart and soul of the competition.

Understanding WHY you want to compete is important, and we'll break that down in this episode.

Coach Danielle is back on for another nutrition episode! In this episode we're going to discuss how to handle your cravings, different approaches in doing so, and what to do when you get off track to minimize the damage. We strive for sustainability, which means not over-limiting yourself to the point that you'll eventually crash and burn. Coach Danielle has 3 options for handling those cravings in a healthy way:

  1. Find a healthier substitute- Satisfy the craving without calorically derailing yourself. Find a non-negotiable (Coach Danielle's is ice cream) and then choose a healthier option that you still love (i.e. Halo Top!)

  2. Tell Yourself No- There are times to say no. You can't indulge every day, and it's good to teach yourself self control when it's best to say no.

  3. Indulge- There are times such as holidays or events where it's ok to let yourself enjoy the not-so-healthy options in front of you! Try not to over-indulge or walk away over-stuffed, but remember that you can always get right back on track the next meal.

We hope this episode gives you an idea of when you should indulge a craving versus not, and helps you stay on track for your goals.

So often we see people set a goal, lose weight, and then gain it all back. So how do you really create LASTING weightless or transformation? In today's episode of the FitTown Show, we're going to discuss our not-so-secret secrets to making lasting change in your life.

When Jeff Bezos asked Warren Buffet what his secret to getting rich was, and why other people don't just copy him, Buffet said, “Nobody wants to get rich slowly”. This is a quote that we believe applies to weightless and transformation too.

We didn't create FitTown in order to be a quick fix, nor do we want it to be. Often times, we get asked about diet fads, exercising multiple times a day to lose weight faster. It’s great to have the motivation, but if you want lasting change, we believe in steady progress that begins with small daily habits that turn into lifelong transformation.  We’ll discuss those habits, and how you can create lasting change in this episode.

One of the biggest things we hear members say is, "Of course I feel physically stronger, but I feel mentally stronger as well". We've always focused our programming to be physically beneficial, but we think it's time to shift some of that focus to mental strength as well.

With that being said, we're going to start doing some mindset work in our classes and in our programming. Each month, we'll focus on one aspect of the mindset. This is something we've been using in our kid's program for awhile, and it's been incredibly successful. We thought, if we're integrating this into our kid's program, why not adults at a higher level? We want to be a WHOLE HEALTH centered gym, not just a physical health centered gym.

In this episode, we're discussing this month's focus which is CONFIDENCE. We'll be programming confidence building exercises and mindset work in class alongside your physical workout. We're so excited to bring this new aspect to FitTown, and help each other build our whole health.

In this episode of the FitTown Show, Andrew sits down with Coach Nick to discuss the differences between Athleticism and Fitness.

Many of our members have told us how they want to take their fitness that they work on in the gym, and use it on the weekends to play with their families or engage in sports with their friends. However, most injuries are actually caused outside the gym, and more often than not we encourage members who are practicing athletes to train with personal training rather than classes. We'll walk through the difference between wanting to keep up with your general fitness and performing as an athlete outside the gym, and how you can prepare for both.

On today's episode we're discussing these 6 traits that mentally tough people have:

  1. Mentally Tough Athletes Know What to Spend Their Energy On

  2. Mentally Tough Athletes Focus On Their Effort and Not the End Result

  3. Mentally Tough Athletes View Failure Differently

  4. Mentally Tough Athletes Manage Their Self Talk

  5. Mentally Tough Athletes Athletes Put the Reps In

  6. Mentally Tough Athletes Are Selective About What They Allow Into Their Minds

The mental toughness you work on and develop inside the gym actually has potential to translate outside of the gym as well. We hear from our members that they feel great, and see results in the gym... but that these results are also translating outside of the gym into their everyday lives. Mental Toughness isn't necessarily something you're simply born with or without, but rather something we believe can be developed through mental toughness habits.

If you know Coach Mo, you know she loves two things that most athletes dread: burpees and running. Mo ran Cross Country in high school, and the mileage took a tole on her body.
