Kicking off Season 2 with a serires on Fatherhood. In this episode I a talk to Chris Kirkwood on being a new father and how that has impacted and changed the way he views fatherhood and all the responsiblities that come along with it.

We discuss some of the challenges the Columbus City Schools had when schools was forced to shutdown and develop alternative methods to educated students. She explain some of the challenges they face and as well the successes they had what some were some of the take aways that was learn that could be applied to the upcoming school year.

In this episode, I take moment to give my thoughts and feelings about the recent events happening in America. Leon Wilson (Author, Speaker and Entrepreneur) joins me in this conversation as we look at these events through our eyes as Black Men.
There are so many expectations when it comes to education that parents may or may not know about. I recently found out that my 4-year-old will need to take a test just to get into kindergarten. Yes. I said kindergarten. He needs to learn to write his name, by able to read sight words, read simple sight word bs, understand patterns and be able to demonstrate comprehension of 1st grade. It is like a mini SAT or ACT for pre-schoolers.

Michelle is an educator with over 10 years of experience as well as an entrepreneur and creator of a learning system called “The 5 Phases of Teaching Reading Before Kindergarten”

Christopher Kirkwood stops by The Conversation to continue this discussion and shares some important tips on how we support the students as they go away to college. He gives us something to think about not only from the parents’ perspective, but from the student’s perspective as well.
Christopher Kirkwood is a college and career practitioner who has dedicated his entire professional career to leveling the playing field for diverse students in under-resourced communities throughout the Chicagoland area.
He is a proud husband to wife Ashley N. Kirkwood and soon to be father of a precious, little girl. Chris graduated from the UNiversity of Illinois at Chicago with a B.A. African American studies and education. He has served as a GEAR UP college and career coach for Chicago Public School, College Access Director at MetroSquash and currently a Program Manager at iMentor. Since 2012, he has supported hundreds of CPS students and families around understanding the college application process, financial aid awareness, career exploration workshops and facilitated college campus visits.
Working with high school students, Chris experiences first-hand how the lack of exposure to diverse professional mentors informed students’ college preparation process. This ultimately led him and his wife, attorney Ashley Kirkwood, to launch The Kirkwood Foundation in 2017, a not-for-profit that seeks to expose diverse students to mentors in a variety of careers, with a special emphasis on pairing students with mentors in STEM, legal, and medical careers. Through TKF’s programming, students learn the process for becoming a lawyer, doctor, engineer, and entrepreneur. The goal here is simple: exposure that leads to opportunities, and opportunities that give our students choices.

Dr. Nayshon T. Mosley (“Dr. Nay”) is well respected for her “down-to-earth” personality and “down-to-business” approach. A passionate leader and administrator, she has over 20 years of experience, best known for her roles as a champion of educational opportunities for youth and adults, public speaker, mentor, advocate and author.
A native of Chicago’s south side, she was primarily educated in Chicago Public Schools and the Archdiocese of Chicago. The first in her family to receive a college degree, Dr. Nay has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology; Master's degree in Inner City Studies; and Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership.
Currently, she serves as the Executive Director of Educational Opportunity Programs at Chicago State University. Within her current role, she administers federal-funded programs which support students and families from disadvantaged backgrounds with their pursuit of postsecondary education opportunities. These services include enrichment courses and college exploratory services for high school students and college application and financial aid services, as well as GED placement services for adults. She also travels across the country, advocating for college access and success for all.
Crediting her success to her faith in God and her will to not only survive, but to live, create impact and be a source for hope while inspiring others who share similar stories, Dr. Nay is paving her own lane in the literary space. She is the author of Truthfully Speaking: An Inspirational Memoir of Discovery, Acceptance, & Growth, as well as co-author of It Takes Money Honey: Guaranteed Strategies to Wealth Creation, Proven Tips for Financial Freedom and Developing Faith and Sis, Stand on My Shoulders: A collection of letters and lessons to help the 20-something year old woman navigate life.
