The Liberty Society: Recent Episodes

The Liberty Society was founded by Military Spouses, for Military Spouses to narrow the unemployment margins experienced by family members across the Armed Forces. We aim to bring employment resources to your fingertips (and ears) in the form of podcasts and across all digital mediums. Through those mediums, we will share our own experiences, engage with business owners and organization leaders who are providing employment opportunities and resources, and military spouses that have found their own successes and any disappointments they have endured along the way. We aim to create a space for military spouses to come to where they feel a sense of community and purpose, can get inspired to pursue their goals, and ultimately find a sense of financial freedom and contentment regardless of where the military takes them.

On today’s episode, we are so excited to bring you fellow podcasters, Natalie Gross and Andrea Scott, co-founders of The Spouse Angle – a weekly podcast that breaks down the news and current events from a military perspective. Natalie and Andrea are both military brats, growing up with fathers in the Army and Air Force respectively, and the military stayed engrained in their bones. After college, they both pursued journalism that eventually led them to meet at The Military Times where they both got hired.

With a dream of starting a podcast, Natalie started researching the best angle to approach the show of her dreams, while Andrea had a clear vision of tapping into the Spouse market while bringing them news and resources without fluff or frill. Together they created a beautiful show that affords spouses the opportunity to get informed on policy changes, new laws and current events that could directly affect them and their families.

As a duo ourselves here at The Liberty Society, we ask them questions about their working dynamic in regards to editing and interviews, and they share their process on getting guests onto the show in order to bring the most updated and relevant information to families everywhere.

Since Natalie and Andrea are both journalists, we thought we’d take the opportunity to ask them how we could best market ourselves to news outlets, publications, etc. in order to get more exposure for The Liberty Society. They share TONS of great advice that everyone can take advantage of in order to get exposure or brand recognition for your business or project. Happy Monday, spouses! Welcome to The Liberty Society podcast, a community for military spouses, by military spouses. We are bringing you a super fun conversation today with Inbal Claudio, marine spouse and founder of Goldwick Candles. It was such a treat to have Inbal on the show, you’re going to love her! Barb was introduced to Goldwick Candles through Danielle Bernstein’s social media where she was supporting small businesses during the pandemic and Barb immediately reached out to Inbal. We are so grateful for her willingness to chat with us about her experiences as a spouse, her professional career and her transition into entrepreneurship.

Inbal Claudio was born in Israel and moved to Orange County, California at a young age, where her path eventually crossed with her now husband. This amazing woman is no stranger to hard work and determination and walks us through her employment journey and the path it took to get her to where she is today. As modern technology and modern dating would have it, she met her husband on Bumble, an online dating app, and they quickly became inseparable (swoon!). Like most military girlfriends, turned fiancé – they managed a semi-long distance relationship over the course of a year before getting married in a small, intimate ceremony in California. Fast forward and Inbal was looking for ways she may be able to bring a little extra income into the family and after brainstorming sessions with her husband and a lot of research, they decided on creating an all-natural, soy based candle company, Goldwick Candles. (Guys, it’s infused with GOLD — also, swoon!)

It is incredible to hear the story behind this endeavor and what she’s doing to maintain her business through each PCS while keeping her existing clients from other duty stations and how she’s continuously looking for ways to improve and come up with new scents. What is so amazing is that Inbal and her husband had little to no candle experience before diving head first into the adventure, which just goes to show—you can do ANYTHING you set your mind to. And as if this conversation wasn’t sweet enough, Inbal is offering ALL of our listeners 20% off at Goldwick Candles through the end of the year! Be sure to visit their website www.goldwick-candles.com and apply the discount code: LIBERTY20 at check out! Enjoy your candles AND the show.

Happy Monday, spouses! We are so glad you’ve joined us for this very special episode of The Liberty Society podcast. Today we’re talking to Xeon Simpson, a Major in the Army, dual military family (yes, he’s a #milspouse too!) and soon to be father of twins! This interview is especially fun because Xeon has been a Liberty Society fan from Day 1 and is one of our biggest supporters. We could not be more grateful or more excited to share this episode with you all!

Xeon walks us through his younger years that took him from Jamaica to New York City, and then how during college in NYC, he experienced 9/11. He joined Fordham University’s ROTC program the next day. His military adventure has taken him all over the world, but most importantly, during his time at Fort Bliss, he met his now wife, Chloe, a Captain in the Army. On top of managing and making time for his work and his dual military marriage, Xeon was gracious enough to sit down with us and discuss his experiences as a person of color in order to help us better educate ourselves, and our listeners. His perspective and advice is inspiring- one key takeaway: “foster relationships with people from different backgrounds and have honest conversations with them.”

We are honoring our fallen service members today with Kent Solheim, founder of Gold Star Teen Adventures, an organization dedicated to providing outdoor adventures and leadership programs to children of fallen service members and first responders. Kent walks us through his journey in the military where he was wounded in Iraq on July 27, 2007 and how he wanted to create a program that he wished his children would have if they were to have lost their Dad. We are so excited to welcome Bethany Reasoner to the show today. Bethany is an Air Force spouse and wildly successful entrepreneur who turned a hobby into a blossoming photography business that she’s been able to take with her to each new duty station. Born and raised in Arkansas, she met her now husband, Jon, in high school. Her journey as a military spouse started in Colorado at Jon’s first assignment and has taken her to Florida (twice!) and now, they’re settled at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska.

With the dream of entering the dietetics world, Bethany was actively pursuing internships to further her career, but when push came to shove, she had to make the hard decision to put that dream on hold to stay with her husband instead of relocating solo for internship opportunities. Ever the optimist, Bethany knew that she would find more suitable career opportunities for their military lifestyle. While stationed in Florida, Bethany was able to find employment at a (gorgeous) boutique, Indigo, where she started on the sales floor and quickly climbed the ranks to social media management. Bethany was able to leverage her growing photography skills and unwavering drive to create business opportunities for herself. She is quick to tell you that she didn’t just have a “knack” for social media, but instead, how she spent endless hours listening to business podcasts (specifically, Jenna Kutcher) and googling things like “best time of day to post on social” to get her to where she is today. Bethany walks us through her mindset when she found out they were moving to Fairbanks, Alaska, seemingly lightyears away from where she had established herself as a highly sought after photographer, and how through the power of hashtags, free marketing and stepping out into the local community, she was able to start landing her dream clients and a social media manager position with an incredible shop in Fairbanks, Blush Moon Boutique.

Tune in to hear all of the incredible (and free) resources Bethany used for professional development, her biggest pieces of advice when creating your business and how you too, can create business opportunities from your hobby through networking, continuous education, and the power of hashtags! Enjoy the show!

On today’s episode, you’re going to hear from entrepreneur, military spouse, and supermom, Erica McMannes, who turned a light bulb moment into a 7-figure business dedicated to matching military spouses with ideal remote employment and career opportunities. Erica walks us through her early years as a military spouse, when tensions were high after 9/11 and our country was on the brink of a new war. She dives into her experience as a new spouse pcs-ing overseas where her husband almost immediately deployed, leaving her to navigate a foreign country alone. Erica explains how much the family readiness groups have evolved since her initiation into this world some 19 years ago, and how the expectations of spouses have certainly changed, for the better, now encouraging spouses to explore their passions and goals throughout their service members’ career. It is inspiring to see how Erica progressed professionally, starting out in an entry level position on post and the transformation into a C-suite executive.

It all came down to one light bulb moment for Erica when she was working in a remote position in Silicon Valley, that she realized there was a market for military spouses and getting them employed. She put plans into action and contacted her now business partner, Liza Rodewald, about coming onboard — and today, they have over 800 military spouses in their hiring queue.

What is so incredible about this interview is that if you’re a military spouse looking for employment, you can take immediate action from this episode. Whether you’re looking for a career in customer support, marketing or administrative roles, you can go to www.instantteams.com and start NOW. Erica walks you through the process of employment matching via their database and the best part is…it’s completely FREE.

Are you a military spouse wanting some extra inspiration and a sense of community? Well, my friend, you came to the right place. The Liberty Society podcast is a community for military spouses by military spouses. Our goal is create a safe space for spouses where they feel a sense of community and purpose, can get inspired to pursue their goals, and ultimately find a sense of financial freedom and contentment regardless of where the military takes them.

In this episode, you’re going to meet Alex Sexauer and Barb Purdy, hear why they are so passionate about getting resources and inspiration out to spouses and give you a sneak peek at some of the incredible guests that will be interviewed on the show.

Barb Purdy is currently active-duty Army but will be hanging up her boots in September, just in time for her husband’s PCS to Indiana! Through her time in service, Barb has seen first-hand the effect that unemployment and lack of community can have on spouses, especially in isolated areas like Alaska. When Alex approached her with the idea of a podcast that aimed to provide a fun and informative platform to get resources out to spouses, she didn’t give it a second thought.

Alex Sexauer is a military spouse to an AH-64 helicopter pilot, stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Employment and independence have always been the foundation of her identity and she quickly realized that she wasn’t alone. However, it was so disheartening to realize how few jobs were available to spouses and how few resources were ending up in the hands of those spouses who needed it most. And thus, The Liberty Society was created as a platform to compile an incredible list of resources and stories for spouses to get inspired by and get tangible information from to take on their journey.

On this journey, you will hear stories from military spouses, across all branches of the US military, about their employment (or unemployment) adventures, relatable conversations from guests who will leave you laughing with reassurance that you are not alone, and also, you will get useful information and resources from organizations and businesses who are advocating for military spouses.

If you or someone you know is a military spouse or business/organization with a story to tell or a resource to provide, then The Liberty Society wants to hear from you! Please email inquire@the-libertysociety.com or visit our website www.the-libertysociety.com
