Michelle & Hazell chat with Specialist Pet Surgeon Stephen Martin. 

Stephen graduated from University College Dublin in 2013, having previously attained a BSc(Hons) in Biochemistry from University College Cork. Following graduation, Stephen undertook a rotating internship in a large multi-disciplinary referral hospital in the northwest of the UK. Post-internship, a move to general practice and subsequently emergency practice confirmed an aspiration to pursue specialist training in small animal surgery, and to that end, he moved home to undertake a specialist internship in small animal surgery at UCDVH. He commenced as a resident in small animal surgery at University College Dublin in 2016, and completed his residency training in 2020, along with submission of his doctoral thesis on canine antebrachial biomechanics. He remained briefly at UCD as an assistant professor of small animal surgery, before joining the Veterinary Specialists Ireland team. He graduated his Doctoral Studies Degree (DVMS) and successfully completed his ECVS specialist board examinations in July 2021. He has particular interest in the field of trauma surgery, including fracture repair.

Michelle & Hazell chat with Gemma O Donoghue of PetScan. From starting out as an equine vet to developing her passion for small animal medicine. 

Gemma qualified as a veterinary surgeon with honours in 2007 from University College Dublin. She then worked in a number of busy primary care and referral hospitals in London for 7 years. She concurrently studied for four postgraduate certificates at Masters level in Small Animal Medicine, Cardiology, Feline Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging.

Gemma is a member of the Veterinary Cardiovascular Society, British Small Animal Veterinary Society and International Society of Feline Medicine.

Donal qualified from UCD in 2009 to take up a large animal position in the mountains and green fields of Co Tyrone – working in a mixed practice in Cookstown. From there, he travelled to Australia and spent five years travelling and working as a large and small animal vet around the country. He returned to Ireland in 2016, when he took a job in Lucan attending to the local cats, dogs and other pets.

Ciarán is a Diplomate of both the American and European College of Veterinary Surgeons and has completed a three year surgical residency programme where he practiced a variety of orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurologic, oncologic and minimally invasive surgery at Washington State University.

A 2014 UCD graduate, Ciarán completed a small animal rotating internship at Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan in 2015. Following this, he moved to Washington State University where he completed a three year ACVS surgical residency and was awarded numerous scholarships including for teaching and for his research in exercise science. . Outside of work, he is passionate about rugby, tennis, golf, and travelling with friends and family.

Ciarán has a particular interest in arthroscopy, minimally invasive techniques, fracture repair and spinal surgery.
