Feeling like an imposter in your own shoes? You're not alone. Through the lens of my personal journey, we peel back the layers of the seldom-discussed yet common phenomenon of imposter syndrome among school leaders. As a school principal, I’ve experienced it firsthand, and it's time we openly address this.
This episode dispels the myth that a school principal is a fountain of knowledge, always ready with solutions. No two situations in school leadership are identical and this episode highlights that sometimes, the best thing a school principal can do is admit they don't have all the answers. So, get ready to challenge conventional wisdom, understand the real challenges of being a school leader, and learn from my experiences of overcoming self-doubt.

Have you ever considered the life-changing potential of fasting? Join me on a journey where we delve into water fasting and its impressive ability to combat cancer. My recent two-day water fast, which ended just before Thanksgiving Eve, brought an unexpected sense of community within my school. It's a testament to how personal health choices can resonate and inspire those around us.
Curious about the details of fasting? Having experimented with juice fasts, I'm now taking on a four-day water fast. I'll share insights into my preparation, the reasons behind using bone broth and electrolyte-infused water, and why I'm planning a high-protein diet post-fast. Is it all worth it? I'll reveal the experiences of others who have seen positive outcomes from fasting and discuss my own progress after the fourth day.
This episode goes beyond weight loss; we're exploring the connection between dietary sugar, cancer growth, and how fasting can be a potent weapon against cancer cells. As a school leader, I believe in setting a healthy example for our community. Our well-being directly influences those around us, making it imperative to prioritize health not just for ourselves but also for our students and staff.
But how do we strike a balance in our hectic lives? That's a challenge I'm all too familiar with, as I juggle roles as a content creator, educator, and family man. Your support has been a cornerstone of my journey, and I'm eager to keep this dialogue going as I begin my fast this Saturday. Let's discover together how prioritizing health can transform not just our lives, but also the communities we lead. #FastingJourney #WaterFast #HealthyLiving #SchoolLeadership #HealthandWellness

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by life’s relentless demands, feeling as though everything is spiraling out of control? I know this feeling all too well, and it's exactly what we're unpacking in today's episode. My personal wake-up call came in 2015, following a car accident that forced me to confront the state of my health head-on. I realized then that I had been putting my work and responsibilities ahead of my own wellbeing. Today, I’m here to share my journey and the valuable lessons I’ve learned along the way, all in the hopes that we can navigate the path of self-care together.
In this episode, we’re taking a closer look at the specific challenges that men, especially those in leadership roles, often face. It’s all too common for us to sideline our health, but today we’re talking about the importance of striking a balance. We’ll discuss how vital it is to make time for our physical, emotional, and mental health, even if that means reorganizing our schedules, waking up a bit earlier, or staying up a bit later. We'll also delve into effective time management strategies, a crucial element in our journey toward holistic wellness. My goal is to highlight the urgency of self-care, sharing practical strategies and personal experiences to help guide you in your own life.
As we close out our discussion, the focus shifts to continuous personal improvement. Becoming the best version of ourselves is a marathon, not a sprint. I want to inspire you to commit to improving by just one percent each day. Through small, consistent efforts, we can achieve significant positive transformations over time. So, I extend an invitation to you: join me on this journey towards wellness. Remember, no matter where you are in your life right now, it’s never too late to start putting your health first.

Are we ready to take on the issue that's pulling students out of the classrooms and hindering their academic growth? Because it's high time we expose the silent epidemic of chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, that's causing a ripple effect in our education system. This is not just a conversation about students skipping school - it's about understanding the complex factors behind it, including the child's home environment, and putting strategies in place to combat it effectively. We're putting the spotlight on the crucial role of parent motivation, the importance of individual attendance data, and the need for early intervention. Let's break down what chronic absenteeism really means and discuss how we can tackle it head-on.
But wait, there's more. We're taking the discussion a step further to question the efficacy of incentives and mentorship in resolving attendance issues. You have to wonder - are incentives leading kids to come to school for the rewards rather than the learning? We're peeling back the layers on this issue to emphasize the need for a climate where students are safe and deeply engaged in their learning, making that the priority over incentives. We'll also be discussing how everyone, from teachers to janitors, can play a part as a success mentor. So, join us as we dig deeper, engage with families, understand the root causes of attendance issues, and provide the support that keeps our students in school where they belong.

Who says that the key to successful school leadership lies solely in the hands of the principal? This episode is about to challenge that notion. We're turning the spotlight on the power of decentralizing leadership in schools and the remarkable difference it can make. Over-centralization can lead to slow decision-making processes, burnout, and exhaustion. We dare to imagine a different, more balanced approach to leadership, one that empowers assistant principals to take charge and contribute to the success of their schools.
This episode is a must for those who believe in shared responsibilities and the potential of every team member to lead. By empowering assistant principals and distributing responsibilities, we create room for deeper conversations and strategic thinking. We discuss how investing time in developing these leaders can create a more responsive, dynamic, and inclusive leadership structure. Our journey explores the ongoing process of decentralizing leadership and the rewards that come with it.
But we don't stop there. We underline the significance of continuous learning and growth, using personal experiences to illustrate the point. The power of learning from others and how it can be used to grow and become better leaders is a key takeaway from this conversation. We believe in reaching out and asking for help, and we encourage all educators to do the same. From empowering assistant principals to fostering a culture of continuous learning, this conversation is set to redefine what effective leadership in schools looks like. Tune in, and let's reimagine leadership together.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to step into a struggling school and turn it around? Drawing on my five-month tenure as the interim acting principal at PSIS 224 in New York City, I share the intricate details of my journey, taking a deep, hard look at the school's narrative and finding ways to effect change. From our bold decision to rebrand the school to "Exploration and Discovery", rallying the staff, students, and the community, to even bringing the Chancellor of New York City public schools for a visit, every step was a learning experience.
While the journey was filled with challenges, it was also one of immense learning. I had the privilege of understanding and leveraging public data and resources to comprehend the history of the school, eventually breathing new life into it. But the responsibility didn’t stop at reviving a school; it extends to supporting fellow school leaders on a similar journey. If you're a school leader, you'll appreciate my tips for setting up effective coaching sessions and reminders on how this work is ultimately about shaping better futures for our children. Time to lace up those sneakers, school leaders, and join this enlightening conversation!

Strap yourself in as we embark on an intense journey of personal discovery and intense disappointment, underscored by the harsh reality of school bullying. My own daughter was the victim, a revelation that shook me to my very core. Her story served as a stark reminder about the imperative role we educators play in protecting our students from the psychological and physical torment that bullying inflicts. Despite my position as a school leader, even I was blindsided by the lack of immediate action taken by the school and the subsequent lack of communication.
This episode goes beyond just sharing my personal ordeal. It serves as a clarion call to educators and school leaders everywhere to take immediate, decisive action against bullying. I echo the sentiment that communication is the lifeblood of prevention and resolution in such matters. Hear the story of a sneaker principal, a tale that starkly illustrates the needless conflicts that arise from poor communication. This episode is a pledge to honor the trust parents place in us, a trust that we must never betray. Let's ensure the school environment is a safe haven for our children and not a battleground. Join me as we navigate these choppy waters, seeking solutions and striving for open, effective communication between parents and school staff.

Today, we're pulling back the curtain on education with Malcolm Harvin Connor, a principal with a vision. How can we prepare our children for the future? Malcolm believes the keys are reading, writing, and critical thinking, and he's not afraid to set high expectations. Whether you're in the classroom or on the school bus, Malcolm insists that everyone plays a role in creating an educational environment that you'd want for your own children.
Born in Nigeria and raised in the US, Malcolm brings a rich tapestry of experiences and challenges to his role in education. His immigrant mentality and firsthand experiences with poverty have shaped his belief that every child can be excellent. He refuses to lower his expectations, a stance inspired by the stereotypes he's faced about Africa. He has seen the power of high expectations firsthand, watching his first student triumph over adversity to graduate high school.

Ever wondered how the iron will of an educator bends and molds in the face of adversity, or how self-doubt creeps into the minds of even the greatest leaders? We promise to take you on an enlightening journey through the complexities of leadership in the education sector. We kick things off by decoding the term 'humble' and its implications in our daily life, reflecting on the delicate balance between confidence and humility. The candid conversation then strides into the challenges of the initial school days, interspersed with intriguing anecdotes of my fellow educators. We wrap up this segment by peering into the crystal ball of the remaining school days, painting a vivid picture of real-life incidents.
On the flip side, we unmask the hardships of school administration, a world that often grapples with the daunting task of reversing years of underperformance amidst pressures from all sides. The conversation takes a deeper turn as we lay out effective strategies to combat self-doubt. We take a leaf out of the lives of historic figures, like Jesus Christ, who dealt with doubt yet left an indelible mark on humanity. The toolbox includes self-talk and journaling, tools that can help us navigate through uncertainties. The secret sauce? Vulnerability! Acceptance and understanding of our doubts, a step that takes us forward in the quest for success. This episode is a rich tapestry of insights and reflections on overcoming self-doubt and thriving despite adversity. Come, tune in!

In this episode of "Ivy League Hood Rats," co-hosts Uche L. Njoku and Archie Tyson reflect on their time growing up in the 90s and 2000s when school was more than just a place to get an academic education. They discuss the importance of extracurricular activities, such as sports, music, arts, clubs, and organizations, in helping them develop skills, abilities, talents, and a sense of purpose.
However, today's schools and communities are facing a divestment of resources that leaves children with nothing to do beyond the school day, which can lead to trouble. This is evident in the increase of violence and loss of life in some cases, leaving parents in fear and hopelessness, especially when they do not have the resources to privately fund opportunities to keep their kids off the streets.
In this episode, Njoku and Tyson start a conversation about what can be done to change this trend. They discuss the importance of investing in extracurricular activities and providing opportunities for children to develop their skills and passions. They also talk about the role of parents and community members in supporting and advocating for these programs.
Join Njoku and Tyson as they delve into the importance of extracurricular activities and explore ways to ensure that all children have access to the opportunities they need to succeed.

In this episode of "The Sneaker Principal", I want to challenge you, as an educational leader, to reevaluate what it means to be a true leader in our education system. Titled "You Are Not A Leader", I want you to question whether your leadership is simply a matter of positioning, standing on a foundation of fear.
As someone who has dedicated themselves to the education of our children, I believe that true leadership is about being willing to give everything up for what is right and necessary for the least of us. However, in our current education system, I see leaders who are more concerned with maintaining their position, status, and income than they are with doing what's best for children, schools, and society.
Throughout this episode, I express my frustration with the lies that school district leaders are told about their own leadership abilities. I argue that the education system is only getting worse for our children, and that true leadership requires a willingness to take risks and stand up for what is right.
So, as you watch this video, I challenge you to consider whether you are truly a leader or simply a follower of the system. Are you willing to take risks and stand up for what is right, even if it means losing your position, status, or income? Only then can we hope to make real progress in improving our education system and ensuring a better future for our children.

“Teacher Therapy Friday”… This evening I want to talk about something that I found early this morning that called into question so much for me about my identity, my origination story. As a teacher I have always prided my self as a learner, researcher, a lot of a “jack of all trades”. But this one piece of information left me gumsmacked. I discovered a classified “secret” memorandum from then US Secretary of State Kissinger to then US President Richard Nixon about the 1969 state of affair of the Biafran civil war in Nigeria. As an Igbo, this war was pivot to my existence and upbringing. This episode of “Teacher Therapy Friday” will be my self to self therapy session in understanding my heritage pieced together over the past 46 years.

Public schools are failing black children on purpose is the topic of tonights episode of The Sneaker Principal Podcast. The worst thing that I could be right now, at this point in my exsistence, is a former principal and parent of two children that could possible be students in the school system that I commited almost two decades of my life to. As the time comes for me to decide where my daughter will be starting her formal education, I am not on any level seriously considering public schools. Life a butcher that becomes a vegeterian, I am seriously concerned about what will be poured into my black children by a system that has for the most part done very little to ensure equitible access for black children as literacy and math proficiency continues to drop while there is an elevation extreme “woke” agenda that results in a continued under preparation for college and careers, as well as a horizon of even higher drop out rates. How can public schools stop failing black children on purpose? Let’s Talk…

What do teachers believe about black students and is implicit bias is a major factor in those beliefs regardless on the teachers race? This is what I was left thinking about after watching a parody of films like Dangerous Minds and Freedom Writers. Saturday Night Live's Ego Nwodim plays a substitute teacher who's determined to let her students know that their race and stupidity won't stop them from achieving their dreams. The only problem is, the kids aren't dumb and as host Megan Thee Stallion points out: "Miss? This is an honors-level physics class." Let's Talk about what teachers believe about black students and whether implicit bias is a major factor in those beliefs.

Literacy scores are at a university 30 year low along with college entrance exams like the ACT according to the Wall Street Journal. This is as the federal department of education is spending over $1 billion focusing primarily on social emotional programs. Why can’t we have more money focused on targeting the nationwide drop in literacy proficiency?

Building generational wealth through family entrepreneurship is part of DNA as it is exemplified in African culture and in Bible. We should be training our children to be part of and operating the family business and if there isn't one, then one should be created for the collective family to build generational wealth together.

In this 50th episode of The Principal Podcast, I present to you a conversation with David C. Banks, the President/CEO of The Eagle Academy Foundation, He was the Founding Principal of The Eagle Academy for Young Men, the first school in a network of innovative all-boys public schools in New York City. The mission of The Eagle Academy for Young Men is to respond to what David Banks calls the crisis impacting primarily Black and Brown boys in New York City. He is quoted as saying, "With the low graduation rate, so many of these young men get in trouble, wind up populating the criminal justice system and we wanted to show, through our work, that it didn't have to be that way," Eagle Academies high school graduation rate is 87% versus the 59% national average for young men of color and 98% of their scholars were accepted to college.
Join me in this opportunity to dialogue and learn from a man that is impacting the lives of so many young men and leaders in both New York City and across America.

There is so much talk about how learning pods are creating a greater divide in inequity, but I see an opportunity to for the closing of the achievement gap. This is a live and recorded conversation on how alternative educational models, such as learning pods, also called pandemic pods, micro-schools or nano-schools (learning communities of typically three to 10 students) can enhance black and brown students’ learning and performance to not only bridge but close the achievement gap.

As a school leader I have struggled with managing my stress through this pandemic. Beyond my primary responsibility to my wife and children, I am on a 24 hour alert for school community as well. There has been so much loss and even more close calls. This compounded with the continuous daily uncertainties and working to provide the best possible product of an education to every single child in our school, it is getting often to catch a breath.
In this episode of The Sneaker Principal Podcast, I ask you to join me as I am guided through mindfulness practices with Dave Beal, Program Director and Head National Trainer for Brain Power Wellness. The goal of this experience provide you with tools to aid in achieving a state of alert, focused relaxation by deliberately paying attention to thoughts and sensations without judgment. This needed in these high stress times.

Originally aired on Saturday, November 28, 2020 - A conversation with return guest, Marko Majic. We explore how education is transforming as we engage in remote learning during the COVID19 pandemic. What will schools look like in the near future? What will be the transformation teachers as they learn how to navigate instruction as they now directly compete for the attention of our children? Are teachers becoming content creators and social media influencers?

Discovering one’s purpose... Diving into one’s passion... Devotion to one’s dream... These are all essences to one living a full and complete life. These are also concepts that are rarely, if ever taught or discussed as core content. This is the basis higher order thinking stripped out of the development of the vast majority of the masses. John D Rockefeller said "I don't want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers". We are overwhelmingly taught to settle for being slaves to another man's dream. If only 1% of people have true freedom then our entire population are living in bondage. This doesn’t have to be so.

I came across a YouTube post made by "Beau of the Fifth Column" earlier this evening about the random talks coming from mostly Senators Schumer and Warren calling for the cancelling of $50,000 of student debt. As can be imagined there are many that are staunchly against such a thing. They claim that it is unfair to essentially give anyone what would possible amount to a free education. For most poor people a college education has literally been their barrier into the middle class and this is why.

I attended both middle school and high school in the lower income suburb of Inglewood, California. While attending La Tijera Junior High School and Inglewood High School I didn’t know that it was such a different experience for many Black and Brown children across America in that the majority of my teachers looked like my classmates and I. Even stranger was the fact that many of my teachers lived in the neighborhood. I remember one teacher living a couple of house down the street from me... that was definitely stressful. Most of my teachers also grew up locally and some even attended the same schools as I, evidenced by the dusty year books that I found in the school library.
When I moved to New York to become a teacher many of my new colleagues were dumbfounded by the fact that I chose to live within walking distance of my school on the Walton Campus, in the Bronx. I thought that I should experience the neighborhood that I was serving. Plus, I found a really affordable apartment on my not so great first year teacher salary. My apartment on Bailey Avenue was at the crossroads of a few gangs beefs and drug deals that often spilled in to my school. There were many times that I thought to myself this is crazy, but then I would be reminded that this is what my students face everyday, and not that much different from what I experienced coming up in Southern California.
Looking back I wouldn’t change anything about how I chose to jump into my career as an educator. I knew my students, their neighborhood and their stories. It helped me in building relationships and being an effective teacher.
I wonder what it would have been like to have enter the lives of my students without knowing anything about them? It would have been terrifying.

I became a special education teacher because of my being labeled mentally retarded by my school in the third grade. If not for my mother’s determination to get me all the help I needed i don’t know where I would be today. My issue wasn’t an intellectual defect, but rather a deficiency in the teaching that I had received up until I was evaluated for special education. After a full year of “academic” supports and remediation I was caught up. From being learning disabled I was place into a gifted and talented education program. To many black and brown boys, girls as well, are victimized by poor and biased evaluations for special education. Like you should do with your health when you get unsettling news you should always get a second opinion!

Learning Pods & Micro-Schools: Why Don't We Have Them?
Over the course of the past eight to nine months there has been a lot of talk about learning pods and micro schools. These are in many cases important supplementary resources as add-ons to what schools do for our children, and in other cases powerful options for children needing alternatives to traditional school environments. Strangely enough I have not been able to find a real presence of learning pods and micro schools in Black and Brown communities. Why is this the case?

TSP #34 - The 75 Hard Challenge, The First Three Days
I came across this watching Javier Mercedes's YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/GubeStuff) as I was learning from him how to set up my podcast last March & April. I didn't explore 75 Hard then, I just kept a mental note. As the year winds down and the fatigue of all that has happened in 2020 takes toll on, I have found my self taking on this challenge with exactly 75 days until the end of 2020. For me this is not not a get in shape quick scheme. It is an opportunity to push out of my comfort zone being committing to something hard but very doable. I just have to be disciplined through the end of the year, and hopefully I will find myself, a better self entering 2021.

TSP #33 - Open Letter to 2020
The year 2020 has been a year for the history books. Even more so, it has been an incredibly challenging past seven months. Not only because of COVID-19, the magnification of racial injustice in the hands of police brutality, and of course the socio-political/economic devastation being faced by many in this country, especially in Black and Brown communities. Most of this has been the main stay of the 24 hour news cycle and therefore normalized. However, there is much that I am noticing about my overall being as impacted by all of this. In talking to many of my family and friends I am seeing that there is a devastation that is being rained on our collective headspace that we are not freely talking about. This my attempt to share my experiences through the past seven months in hope of comparing notes and hopefully finding our way back to living our best lives once more.

Dear The Sneaker Principal Podcast Listener... I thank you for your continued commitment to this platform. When I first started this podcast in March, two weeks after the closing of school in New York City and most cities across America, I committed to bringing you conversations about education from multiple lenses. I was using this platform as a way to pass our quarantine time by engaging in uplifting dialogue to keep us all continually engaged in our educational systems. This was all in the hope of sharing resources and ideas that would better prepare us for returning to our school buildings. Now, seven months later, public education as a structured system looks to be on wobbling legs. Unions and politicians are at each other's throats in very public and bloody fight. As of yesterday the NYC principals' union voted "No Confidence" in both our mayor and schools chancellor. As troubling as this is, I see a squabble between wealthy power players that seem to be blind to the enhanced dark realities that the poorest students in NYC, representing approximately 70% of all students.
I am refocusing The Sneaker Principal Podcast to ask the questions that I hope that we are are seeking answers for. For example... What is going to happen to our neediest and most under protection in communities while the unions and politicians fight?
-Uche

If we have any hope with keeping the current state of education afloat as we hunker deeper into the use of technology to get through the pandemic we have to move from just being teachers to being 360 degree content creators. Artists like Yellopain are part of the oral tradition of teaching through song that goes back to Africa and is what hip-hop is made of. We schools are now competing for real estate in the attention span of our youth. I suggest we find ways to renew and reconnect to our profession by studying a video like "My Vote Dont Count".

For 15 years the New York City Department of Education has been integral in Kevin Bryant’s formation as a student, educator, and leader. Prior to becoming an educator, Kevin spent 3 years as a coder and web developer for Metlife. These experiences have shaped much of how he sees the intersection of education and technology to increase student and educator engagement. Kevin entered education through the New York City Teaching Fellows where he taught Mathematics in Canarsie Brooklyn. Seeking to have a larger impact, Kevin obtained his Masters of Education Leadership from Columbia University’s Teachers College Summer Principal Academy and participated in New Leaders Emerging Leaders and Aspiring Principals Program. Throughout his time in the NYCDOE, he served in many leadership capacities, most notably a Turnaround and Master Principal. Kevin has used his role as an urban school leader to ensure that zip code or ethnic background is not an indicator for academic success specifically amongst marginalized groups. He is eager to utilize his passion and background for technology, teaching and learning to challenge traditional teaching methodology as he continues his studies as a doctoral candidate in the Doctor of Education Leadership Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. When I decided to pursue creating content through this medium of podcasting, I never contemplated that I would be so excited and motivated by the reaction to a conversation that I had with with my sister about mental health. As an educator my goal is to teach and motivate. I am happy to take what I aim to do on a daily basis from the school building to the greater society. I promise to continue do this in all future episodes of The Sneaker Principal Podcast. Thank you!

I finally found the time and mind space to do what I should have done to kickoff "The Sneaker Principal Podcast", which is to actually formally welcome you to the podcast. It has been a journey, and continues to be so. I am embarking on adding another voice to the realm of the thousands of people sharing their perspective through podcasting. What differentiates The Sneaker Principal Podcast from the many engaging in this topic? An honest conversation about what can be done to exponentially move our schools forward in improving the quality of the product we call a public education. I promise to not only share my thoughts and those of others in this space, but also allow you to see the evolution as a life long learner on a journey of enlightenment and exploration.

In this second episode of The Sneaker Principal podcast I introduce you to Karim Abouelnaga the CEO of Practice Makes Perfect, a Benefit Corporation that partners with K-12 schools to deliver high quality, academic programs. He founded Practice Makes Perfect at 18. Practice Makes Perfect partners with K-12 schools to narrow the achievement gap and create greater equity in the world. Since 2010, this has been done through our flagship summer program that has been recognized by global leaders, national news outlets and local politicians for providing low-income children with access to programming that has historically only been accessible to their middle class and affluent peers. Today, they partner with schools to deliver services to drive academic outcomes that help students realize their full potential. I hope that our conversation provides a starting point for teachers, parents, and school administrators to get to know Karim and the good that his company provides, as well as his personal insights on the current state of education.

In this inaugural episode of The Sneaker Principal podcast I introduce you to Dave Beal, Program Director and Head National Trainer for Brain Power Wellness. I have had the privilege of working with Dave in embedding physical and mental brain breaks, mindfulness practices, and social emotional wellness strategies that support a positive classroom atmosphere in two schools that I have lead as principal. My relationship with Dave and Brain Power Wellness was further deepened through his work with the Gray Fellowship for Principal Excellence of which I am a member of its first cohort. Through his work with fellowship of 20 New York City principals I have adopted tools to create a sustainable, healthy, happy and focused school environment. I hope that our conversation provides a starting point for teachers, parents, and school administrators to introduce wellness and mindfulness practices into their school communities.
