In this episode, Executive Director of the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organization (RADO), Dr Sasha Sutherland discusses The Fight Against Doping in Sports. She shares her views on the growth of Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organization since its establishment 15 years ago in terms of capacity building and its partnerships with Caribbean countries in the implementation of drug control programmes. She also addresses the challenges that the organisation has faced such as travelling across member counties and the strategies adapted to increase capacity within these countries.
Dr Sutherland also speaks about:

Creating a Safe Space: Safeguarding our Children in Sports Webinar
In this episode, The Drive Phase Media’s Webinar under the theme, “Creating a Safe Space: Safeguarding our Children in Sports” is presented. The webinar was designed to discuss ways stakeholders can contribute to child protection and safeguarding of youth in sports. It aimed to formulate solutions designed to encourage everyone to do their part to keep sport safe. The webinar’s objective is also to assist sport-based initiatives in developing practical tools focused on child protection and safeguarding practice and to foster the progression of policies, practices and procedures to keep sports fun and children safe.

Ricardo is is a Senior Producer and Presenter at SportsMax TV and an avid track and field analyst, commentator and fan, who has worked in the field for more than a decade. With a start in stadium announcing from his high school days, the Calabar High School old boy began his sport journalism career at the tender age of 18 years old with KLAS Radio. Since then, he has worked as a broadcaster at the RJRGleaner Group and currently at SportsMax Limited as a broadcaster/sport journalist.

In Episode 18 of The Drive Phase Podcast, we have a discussion with Randy Rowe on Athletes and their Financial Future.Randy has been doing investments successfully for some time now. He shares very applicable personal stories on investments, and uses that knowledge to encourage athletes to be more financially prudent. Randy discuss the Jamaica Stock Market, initial public offerings (IPOs) and general information about investing and saving. He also gives practical solutions to potential problems related to how athletes sometimes treat their earnings and offers suggestions on who to turn to for financial advice. This is a lively discussion as Randy help us breakdown some financial jargon, simplifying things a bit.
Randy suggests that:
- Athletes should have a Financial Advisor or Money Manager to help them maximise on their earnings
- Athletes should take advantage of the investment opportunities locally
- They should be more aware about money and the use of money
- In terms of investment, they should think about “how much money I'm putting in vs how much am I getting out and why”
He also makes general recommendations that I think athletes, support personnel and the average listener can appreciate and benefit from.
Randy is a self-taught Equity Investor and Strategy Consultant. He also works as a Business Consultant and manages his personal Private Equity Fund while running an online financial literacy business, Everymickle.com , which he founded in 2012 as a simple blog.

This episode features a very informative conversation with Sports Attorney-at-Law Dr. Emir Crowne.
Emir delves into sport dispute resolution, unravelling some of the issues and challenges in the region. He also gives some advice to young lawyers who may want to pursue sports law as a viable profession. There were many good moments in this episode and I enjoyed discussing this potential career path for sport lawyers and tips on how they can develop.
His suggestions include:
- Working with national sport federations to establish dispute resolution policy guidelines
- Spending time doing pro bono work with athletes and/or national sport federations
- Helping sport associations to ensure that the natural justice rights of everyone involved in doping cases are respected
- Putting your head down and just doing the work as whatever accolades to be had will eventually come.
He also makes some recommendations for national sport associations in relation to dispute resolution.
Emir also touches on the aspects of recent topical cases in the Caribbean including the Brianna Williams doping violation case, and the Thelma Williams selection issue, sharing lessons from his involvement. He also gives his take on other regional and global issues such as the purpose of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the International Olympic Committee’s Advertising Regulations and the role of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) among others.
Dr. Emir Crowne is a Barrister and Attorney-at-Law admitted to practice in Ontario, Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, respectively. He is also a registered Trademark Agent in Canada, and an Intellectual Property Agent in Trinidad & Tobago. He has been involved in several anti-doping cases including most recently Jamaican athlete Brianna Williams vs JADCO.

She talks about her journey as a professional athlete, beginning in St. Thomas, Jamaica to competing at the Olympic Games. We discuss her track rivalry with fellow sprinter Merlene Ottey as well as their sisterly bond; and how Merlene assisted her throughout her career and taught her many lessons about saving and investments. Juliet also talks about training and competition after pregnancy; dealing with retirement and injuries; and other issues facing athletes. Juliet also shares her story about the transition into politics and entrepreneurship.
Juliet is a five-times Olympian, a Government Member of Parliament and an entrepreneur. She has won three Olympic Medals, four World Championship outdoor medals and one World indoor. She has years of experience in sport administration and currently plays a crucial role in the World Olympian Association.

- Athletes should start preparing for retirement while they are still competing
- Athletes should ensure they live within their means
- Athletes should not only stay away from banned substances but also educate themselves about the fight against doping in sports
