In the lead-up to the 3rd Weight of War Run event this year on 2 December, I wanted to talk to some experts when it comes to pushing the body and the mind with running.
Today I have Benny Groth of Run The North (RTN) Benny has been running since he was a spring chicken and has since done many things that involve it. But his crowning achievements thus far have been the ability to help those achieve their goals and do the things they didn't think were possible.
RTN is a community-based run club on the north side of Brisbane, just 10min north of the CBD. They are by far one of the best, most down-to-earth and enjoyable lot.
So if you're looking to get started in your running adventure, have hit a wall and want to improve, or you're looking to get in tip-top notch for that next big event. I couldn't recommend RTN enough.
Not only that, but Benny runs us through his training phase block and his lead into big events as well as his nutrition and his thoughts and beliefs around resistance training to improve running.

Your mindset and how you approach anything can be the most powerful or pathetic force there is. It’s not as simple as saying “have a good mindset” and then just jogging on.
It’s like a muscle and a skill. You have to train it, flex it and use it in all manner of conditions!
Much like our energy systems, use the right mindset for the task at hand and let it fuel you to achieve mission success.
In this final instalment of the Weight of War Run series I’ll be running over what my mindset was in last years run, what I’ll be taking into this years run, and bringing parts 1 & 2 together.

The vest is what represents the weight of war.
This representation is a visual one. One that we can see and one that can be removed when we like.
The weight that our veterans carry with them is not always visible. It’s a weight that can start out seemingly insignificant yet grow and grow until it’s unbearable to the point where suicide seems like the only option.
Well, we are here to help, STTN is here to show our veterans that they can take control of their lives and not only survive but thrive!
Continuing on from part 1: Vulnerability, Ensure you’re having constant, genuine and engaging conversations to facilitate a space where vulnerability can be expressed and then the potential of a weight to be lifted may occur.

I’ll be talking a little more in-depth as to why I’m doing the weight of war run and the aspects behind the key elements of the event.
This Ep sadly comes first because of the most recent passing of another active serving member within the Army. Continuing to highlight the current epidemic that current and former serving members of the Defence Force are facing.
Vulnerability, as I state, is a two-prong attack. We need to create a safe space through genuine and constant conversation with those we love and care about. We must also be willing to be vulnerable and have those tough conversations.
As I state, it takes courage and strength to ask for help in all aspects of life, not just mental health. So we need not to view speaking up as a weakness. We also need to be real and understand that it is, more times than not, easier said than done. So with that in mind, be diligent when having conversations and interactions. Take note of how our friends react to all manner of social cues and if you notice a change, approach them in a way that is becoming of safety and openness and have those conversations.
Let’s continue to frequently do our mate checks, take stock of how they are and continually foster an open, transparent and judgment-free environment to make those that need to be as vulnerable as they can be.
A massive shoutout to the work that @survivetothrivenation does for all veterans with their program.
Another massive shoutout and sponsor of the weight of war run and veterans community @thepineappleexpress_vc. These guys are always the first to step up and get the veteran community coming together!

We are all hearing and witnessing the lack of support that our veteran community is receiving at the moment. But what we may not see is the tireless work that's being put in to aid them in assimilating back into the community after their service. Dane and his company Survive To Thrive Nation STTN are one such company.
Dane has built this company up from the ground and is lobbying government and the public to raise awareness around the issues as well as providing a platform to help veterans take control of their life and be the best versions of themselves upon discharge of their service branch.
