Some common life-saving medicines, such as insulin, are made of proteins so large and fragile that they need to be injected instead of ingested as pills. But a new generation of medicine -- made from smaller, more durable proteins known as peptides -- is on its way. In a quick, informative talk, molecular engineer and TED Fellow Christopher Bahl explains how he's using computational design to create powerful peptides that could one day neutralize the flu, protect against botulism poisoning and even stop cancer cells from growing.
Chris Bahl is a protein designer, biochemist and structural biologist. Chris pioneered the ability to computationally design synthetic miniproteins de novo. He began this work at the Institute of Protein Design in Seattle as a postdoctoral fellow, and he matured this design technology into a high-throughput platform with his team at the Institute for Protein Innovation in Boston where Chris was the Head of Protein Design. Today, Chris is the Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder of AI Proteins, Inc. AI Proteins is leveraging the unique and powerful synthetic miniprotein modality to rapidly create novel therapeutics.
AI Proteins is a newly founded biotechnology company focused on the design and engineering of synthetic miniprotein therapeutics. We combine cutting-edge computational protein design with advanced laboratory robotics to accelerate the creation of life-changing medicines. Our common goal is to markedly improve human health and wellbeing. Our environment is rigorous, fast-paced and collaborative, bringing together passionate individuals who are making an impact. We inspire creativity and discovery by embracing an open culture that fosters innovation, initiative, teamwork and excellence.

Astrobiologist Armando Azua-Bustos is the CEO of Atacama Biotech, where he's working to find and characterize species that are able to survive in the extreme conditions imposed by the Atacama Desert in Chile.
In the past few years, a range of different lifeforms has been discovered in the Atacama, showing fascinating adaptations to extremely low water availability, high UV radiation, high salinity, and other environmental stresses. For these same reasons, the desert is considered a good analog model of the planet Mars. Azua-Bustos is a TED Fellow. He earned a Ph.D. in molecular genetics and microbiology as well as an MSc in biological sciences and an MSc in biochemistry.

In 2008, Spotz became the first person to swim the entire 325 miles (523 km) length of the Allegheny River, which runs between New York state and Pennsylvania. Accompanied by safety kayaker, James Hendershott, the two began on July 22 to hike the "stream" for 27 miles before starting at swimming depth on the river at Roulette, Pennsylvania. Swimming 12 to 15 miles a day, 6 to 8 hours a day for a month, they finished at the "Point" where the Allegheny and the Monongahela River join to form the Ohio River in Downtown Pittsburgh less than a month later, on August 21, 2008.
On January 3, 2010, Spotz embarked on a solo ocean rowing crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, in a planned 2,473 miles (3,980 km) westward route from Senegal to French Guiana.During her journey, her diet consisted of mostly chocolate bars. En route she altered the route, increasing the total distance by approximately 400 miles (640 km), setting Georgetown, Guyana as the terminus for a total distance of 2,817 miles (4,534 km). More than $150,000 was raised for clean water projects as the mission behind the row.

An ER Doctor turned start-up founder.
As explained by Greg:
When I entered the workforce as an ER-resident and then attending, I quickly developed a passion for continuous improvement, Kaizen, and Lean. I immediately realized there were not any software systems to make this work easy, sustainable, transparent, reportable, inclusive and scalable. Honestly, until the internet and cloud-based enterprise software appeared coupled with the connect/collaborate mentality we have today, the possibility of solving this problem didn't exist.
Since then, I have spent my time thinking about how to make improvement easier for companies while concurrently building KaiNexus. Working on an idea, building it, talking to our passionate customers, and building the KaiNexus team are some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. KaiNexus has become a living, breathing entity with a powerful sense of self and a mission to impact the world.
I am also really excited about sitting on the board of Sergeant Sullivan Center. They are doing such important work making people aware of post-
deployment illness (http://sgtsullivancenter.org/issues/post-deployment-illness/).
Experience and Non-work Interests:
While I still enjoy a couple of ER shifts per month, I've worked on KaiNexus full-time since 2010. When I am not working on KaiNexus or seeing patients, I am hanging out with my awesome wife and daughter, on a quest for the perfect pickle, trying to figure out how I can play more squash, or attempting to finish one of my many home improvement projects.

From Steve:
I’ve always been amazed at how Bezos has been able to grow the company into the giant it is today. Being a “techie,” I came across and actually read the letters to shareholders that Jeff Bezos has written for the past 21 years. I was amazed to discover that he essentially had laid out — “hidden in plain sight” — how he has grown Amazon from a bootstrapped startup to the fastest company ever to hit $100 billion in sales — and in my opinion, that’s happened primarily by how he has embraced risk.
I analyzed and pulled out 14 growth principles Bezos used that can help us all become more efficient, productive, and successful. And the good news is they are applicable for businesses and organizations of almost any type and size.

RevItUpReading by Abby: I used to HATE to read. I went through my adolescent life, four years of college and three years working in the business world with this negative attitude. This attitude changed to positive after I got trained as a traveling reading and study skills teacher where I learned some simple strategies that made reading more pleasurable. Now, I can’t imagine my life without dynamic and versatile reading skills. I believe smart reading skills are a set of active, mindful, and conscious strategies that allow the reader to get what they need quickly from any reading material in an efficient and effective manner. Since 1988, I have been developing and teaching simple strategies for better, smarter and faster reading. Because I believe in the power of high-quality reading, I’ve come up with the most user-friendly interactive self-paced on-demand college-level online reading course for those interested in becoming the best readers they can be. As a published expert, I am the author of three books – 10 Days to Faster Reading, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Speed Reading and Success Skills: Strategies for Study and Lifelong Learning. I have a master’s degree in Adult Learning and consider myself a lifelong learner. For the past 30+ years, I have taught students and educators in high schools, colleges and universities, business professionals in Fortune 500 companies, associations, small businesses and government agencies, and anyone else who wanted to improve their reading abilities.
