The Auckland Shareholders association runs regular investor meetups and presentations and had one planned for later this month. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Each event has guest speakers, often CEOs of NZX listed companies as well as other well-known market specialists. The events are a great place to enhance your investing knowledge, meet likeminded people and get an insight that is not normally allowed to retail investors. The shareholders association also does a lot of work to represent your interests as shareholders, they advocate and scrutinise boards, attend annual meetings and send out a regular investing newsletter. For a nominal annual fee, the shareholders association is some of the best value you can get in the markets at the moment. Find out more information and how to join your local branch at www.nzshareholders.co.nz

In this special episode of the podcast, I interview Paul Harrison, who was due to be one of the guest speakers that was due to present at our event later in the month.

Paul has more than 28 years of experience in the finance sector. Paul is a Director and Shareholder of Salt and a Portfolio Manager of Salt's wholesale funds.

Paul started his career as an Accountant with Ernst & Whinney in 1985. He then spent nine years working as an Associate Director for Southpac Investment Management and five years as Investment Manager for Goldman Sachs JB Were Asset Management. Other roles have included Director and CFO for software company EstarOnline Limited and an Institutional Adviser for share broker Doyle Paterson Brown.

Immediately prior to founding Salt, Paul was employed for over five years as Portfolio Manager/Head of Equities at BT Funds Management (NZ) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Westpac Financial Services Group Limited.

You can find out more about Salt by going to www.saltfunds.co.nz

In Episode 51 of the Stock Market Movers podcast we discuss the upcoming IPO of the Port of Napier.  The NZX feels awash with IPOs recently.  At one end of the spectrum we have had Cannasouth which is going to be duking it out in the medicinal marijuana space.  Port of Napier is at the other end, having its history dating back 150 years.

During the episode we discuss the nature of IPOs and what it means to participate in them.  In the episode Jeremy attempts to value the IPO and get an insight into the sellers and what they are looking to achieve.

50 is always an important number.   It is an important birthday.  There are 50 states in the United States of America.  You raise your bat in cricket when you score it, a one day cricket match is also contested over 50 overs.  We even have 50 Shades of Gray and 50 Cents.  I still remember today my Dad giving me a 50 cent coin as my first ever pocket money.    50 is the smallest number that is the sum of two non-zero square numbers in two distinct ways: 50 = 12 + 72 = 52 + 52.  It is also the sum of three squares, 50 = 32 + 42 + 52, and the sum of four squares, 50 = 62 + 32 + 22 + 12.   In the action movie Speed, which depicts a Los Angeles cop (played by Keanu Reeves), who must rescue civilians on a bus that has a bomb rigged to it which will detonate if the bus's speed drops below 50 mph.  Sticking with roads, in New Zealand the speed limit on most urban roads is 50 kmph. The phrase "fifty-fifty" commonly expresses something divided equally in two; in business this is often denoted as being the ultimate in equal partnership. Finally,  50 follows 49 and precedes 51.  And this is where we are at with the podcast.  I am doing this spiel to delay saying who the special guest is on the show.  But one thing I can tell you is that the host is Matt Joass, you can find out more about Matt by listening to episode 36 or by going to his website, www.mattjoass.com and checking out some of his free blog posts.   Thanks very much for listening to the podcast, I really appreciate everyone who tunes in each week and I am humbled by the feedback that I have received.   Oh, and in stocks, a 50 bagger is when a stock increases in value by at least 50 times its purchase price.

They have nothing in common except that they are the three topics in Episode 49 of the Stock Market Movers podcast.  It was another quiet news week on the NZX so Jeremy took the chance to talk about his views on the Cricket World Cup for a couple of minutes, we talk about Z Energy and their recent quarterly update and we spend some time looking at some more Berkshire Hathaway Annual General Meetings.  This time we talk about a question Warren Buffett got at the 1997 AGM about intrinsic value.

To be completely honest, I was flat out this week and did not get to do much in the way of podcast preparation.  I have had work and the cricket world cup taking up too much of my time.  So this week I did an unscripted episode where I just looked at information and talked.  In the first half of the episode I run through the notes from a presentation I did earlier in the week on the NZX recruiter, AWF Madison.  Then I talk about Michael Hill and their recent market update, I do this by reading the information off the screen and not planning out what I am going to say.  Finally we finished off the show with an update on Paysauce, again, what I am saying here is completely off the cuff.

On this weeks podcast I dive into a recent trading update from Abano Healthcare, the $100 million dollar New Zealand and Australian dental care provider.  The most interesting thing about Abano is to take a look at the goodwill on the balance sheet and make assumptions from there.

The biggest news of the week was Chris Heaslip selling around half of his Pushpay shares.  While I will not be able to say this definitively I believe that this is a logical action for a guy that wants to realise a return on his investment and set himself up for life.  The news should be neutral to the stock price.

Finally, during the week I did a tour with the local Shareholders Association of the North Island distribution centre for the Warehouse Group.  I learnt a few things that I share on the podcast.

There was a lot of NZX news over the week.  It seemed that there were a lot of companies that either had updates, guidance or came out with their annual report.  In this weeks episode we look at the updated guidance from New Zealand King Salmon (NZK), the annual report from Greencross Health, the Fletcher Building buyback and we dig into two of New Zealand's publicly traded trucking and logistics companies.

In the first part of the episode Jeremy discusses the biggest news of the week on the NZX was the Cannasouth IPO which began trading on the market under the ticker code CBD.  This was huge news for two reasons.  The first being that it was the first IPO on the NZX for two years, the second reason being that it is a medicinal marijuana research company.

In the second part of the episode Jeremy dives into SmartPay, the eftpos rental company who recently released their annual report and numbers to the market.

Finally Jeremy discusses CFDs, otherwise known as contracts for differences and explains some of the risks around trading these instruments.

It was a quiet news week on the NZX and markets in general.  So this week Jeremy talks about short selling and uses some examples from everyday life to define it.  Jeremy describes when he thinks people should short sell, should they do it for valuation or fraudulent reasons? he describes some of the problems people have with short selling using the example of Tesla and Elon Musk.

Finally the episode ends with part 2 of Jeremy's discussion of Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger and the 2019 Berkshire Hathaway Annual General Meeting.

This week on the podcast it is my pleasure to interview Matt Joass. In an unscripted and wide ranging discussion we get stuck into everything from the macro economy, to investment process and some individual stock names. Matt's Bio is inserted below and you can find out more about Matt by going to www.mattjoass.com.

During the week I also sat down with Plexure CEO Craig Herbison and discussed McDonalds and the background to their purchase of 9.9% of Plexure.

--

Matts Bio:

Matt Joass, CFA is a private investor and former Portfolio Manager of Motley Fool Pro, a concentrated small-cap focused ASX investment portfolio. During his tenure as Portfolio Manager, Matt generated an annualised return of 32%, compared to an 8% return for the benchmark.

Matt has appeared as an expert guest on CNBC Asia and Sky Business, and contributed to the Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Financial Review.

Matt’s ideal investment is a small, fast-growing business, that is capital-light, with demand- and supply-side competitive advantages, high returns on incremental invested capital, little analyst coverage, deeply aligned management (typically founders), and that are top-dogs or first-movers in an emerging and important industry. Last but by no means least, the company must be trading at a discount to Matt’s estimate of intrinsic value.

After John's interview last week we get back to normal "trading" on the podcast.  The podcast starts off with a discussion about PaySauce, I thought at first that I had missed an IPO, but it turns out PYS had quietly reverse listed in December and is finding its feet as a public company.  I dive into their business model and product while raising some issues regarding their shareholder structure and shares outstanding.

In the second part of the episode I discuss Kathmandu and my brave attempts at asking a question at the most recent Shareholder Association meeting.

In the final part of the episode I dive into some of the most interesting NZX news in a while, that is the stunning announcement by McDonalds that they are buying a 9.9% share in NZX listed company Plexure.  A truly fascinating update!

A reminder that the podcast is not financial advice, if you are looking for financial advice I recommend that you speak to an authorised financial adviser.

After last weeks episode through the grapevine I got put in touch with John Berry, the founder and CEO of Pathfinder Asset Management, you can check out their website by going to www.path.co.nz. Pathfinder are an investment fund, setup in 2009 to focus on investing responsibly and ethically in the global markets. They believe that investors should consider the environmental, social and governance impact of their investments and believe that accounting for these factors is an edge in the market and can improve returns. So I thought who better to talk to than John Berry, who probably knows more about ethical investing than anyone else in New Zealand.

The conversation is unscripted, wide ranging and we also diverge into other topics such as the big macro, globalisation, fund management and we find time to dive into companies such as Facebook and VW.

John Berry bio

John is an advocate for responsible investment and for greater transparency around investment products. He is CEO (and co-founder) of Pathfinder Asset Management, a boutique fund manager specialising in ethical investment. Pathfinder’s funds include global water and global equity strategies with an environmental, social and governance focus.

John is a trustee of the Men’s Health Trust NZ. He is also an independent director of Punakaiki Fund (an investor in NZ growth and tech businesses) and a member of the Government’s working group designing a new code of conduct for financial advice in New Zealand.

A reminder that nothing that John and I talk about today should be considered financial advice, if you are looking for financial advice I recommend that you speak to an authorised financial adviser.

Welcome to Episode 33 of the Stock Market Movers Podcast hosted by Jeremy Medlin

It was a big week on the NZX and there were so many updates from so many different companies.  This week on the podcast the focus stock on the episode is Kathmandu who updated the market during the week with their interim report.  We also have some quick fire stock updates and discuss Wellington Drive Technologies, Sky TV, Air New Zealand, Methven and Restaurant Brands.  Finally I answer some listener questions and discuss in detail my views on ethical investing and how to read annual reports.

Welcome to episode 32 of the Stock Market Movers Podcast.  We are back to a focus on NZX stocks this week.  Starting with a discussion on the interim results from Metro Performance Glass and Synlait Milk.  I then talk about EBITDA and the best way to think about earnings using an analogy to owning a rental property.

A reminder today that nothing that I say on this episode should be considered financial advice, there is also nothing to say that my opinions about anything  are right.  So you should always do your own research.

Finally, I round out the episode with some of my views on the tragic events in Christchurch with a particular focus on gun control.

In this episodem I take a walk on the wild side and for the first time talk in detail about a company that is not on the NZX.  This is not because there was not enough news on the NZX but more because I felt like doing something different.  Another reason is because I think they are a phenomenal company that not only has a wonderful track record but also an extremely bright future.  That company is none other than Booking Holdings, they trade on the NASDAQ under the ticker code BKNG and they are everything that I look for in a company.  The fundamentals and product are easy to understand, they are loved by their customers, they have excellent economics and fantastic prospects.  I believe that the shares are undervalued and the market capitalisation should be around $100 billion.

A reminder today that nothing that I say on this episode should be considered financial advice, there is also nothing to say that my opinions about the company are right.  So you should always do your own research.

In this weeks podcast I talk about some of the smaller companies trading on the NZX.

To get spoken about on this podcast you have to have a small  capitalisation and you have to have reported a recent update during the week.  The good thing is that these are companies that you may not have yet heard of but trade on the NZX.

I talk about Finzsoft (FIN), Wellington Drive Technologies (WDT), Orion Healthcare (OHE) and Truscreen (TRU).   I also find some time to provide some tips and advice for people that want to learn more about how to approach and how to invest in smaller companies.

The small cap space are where some of our bigger stock market winners such as Xero and a2 Milk have emerged from but also where some of our biggest failures such as Wynyard have come from.  You also get some of the most interesting market stories from the small cap space.

A step away from the normal on Stock Market Movers this week.  There were plenty of market update's from NZX companies but this week the focus is on Warren Buffett's annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders.  This is an 'event' that I look forward to with great anticipation every year and is probably second only to the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting which will be coming in early May.

Points of discussion include scaling up, focusing on what is important, capital allocation, share repurchases, risk and what makes a good business.

The book discussed in the episode is titled: The Essay's of Warren Buffett.    Here Lawrence Cunningham has ordered all of Buffett's letters to shareholders by topic.  It is a must read and read again for all investors.  You can click on the link below to have a look on Fishpond:

As New Zealand's largest listed company by market capitalisation and perhaps the best performing stock in the history of the NZX it is always big news when a2 Milk reports its earnings.  This week the company reported its interim results for the half year ended December 2018.  Revenue grew over 40% and the company reported a net profit of over $150 million.  In this episode, I do a deep dive on a2's results and discuss their strengths, potential risks and the valuation.

The other big news during the week was the results of the tax working group.  I cut through the media hype and discuss what this could mean specifically related to the taxation of capital gains on shares.

NZX companies are starting to provide their trading updates to the market in earnest.  The great thing about this is that the podcast is swimming in plenty of content and we talk about plenty of companies such as Briscoes, Contact Energy, South Port, Allied Farmers, Sky City, Promisia, Hallensteins, Millenium & Copthorne, CDL Investments and NZ Oil & Gas.  This is more companies than I have ever spoken about and I still find time at the end to have a bit of a discussion about the macro environment.

It was a relatively quiet week on the NZX due to the holiday on Wednesday.  This didn't stop Pushpay who delivered a strong quarterly update.  We also had news during the week from an impending IPO from what could be New Zealand's marijuana play, Cannasouth Cannabis.  The final company news is a quick shout out to Orion Healthcare who look set to de-list from the NZX.  From an education perspective I will spend some time explaining the difference between limit and market orders along with their pros and cons.  And finally I will review the book When Genius Failed by Roger Lowenstein, which is an excellent book that is full of lessons that can be taken away by investors.  If you want to find out more about the book follow the link below:

Normal service resumes this week on the podcast as I review the major stock market related news on the NZX.  The big news on the NZX was the downgrade of Air New Zealand profits which caused the stock to drop 12% on the day which no doubt caused at least some of the nearly 26 thousand shareholders some stress.  We also talk about the update from casino operator Sky City who had what I would call a normalisation of their profit expectations.  I also discuss the Oceania Healthcare interim report which will no doubt be interesting for any holders or retirement stock.  Finally I finish off with a quick book review from an excellent short book I read earlier in the year called Zero to One by Peter Thiel.

A different type of episode this week.  I do a deep dive into MOA Group Limited, I sample some product, talk about the competitive landscape, discuss growth, do some numbers around valuation and talk about the company's prospects.  While I am there I find time to talk about some of the companies in the alcohols industry as well as some numbers on beer consumption in New Zealand

This is the first episode where we have done a really detailed analysis on a stock.  Remember that the information given is based around my opinions on what I have read and learnt about the company.  It is therefore subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt.  I have done my best to keep everything as accurate as possible but no doubt made a mistake somewhere along the line.

With virtually no companies reporting interesting updates it is a quiet time of year for company news on the NZX.  Because of this I thought we would do something a little bit different to normal on the podcast this week.  This week therefore is more of an educational episode.  The first thing we talk about is details of a trade that I have opened and closed recently, we go through how I identified the opportunity, my research process, the mistakes I made and how it ended.  The second thing we talk about is a bit of a refresh on the right way to think about stock prices - what matters and what doesn't.  And finally we do an update from one of our earlier episodes on the investing landscape in the marijuana industry and what to look out for.

Episode 22: in the first episode of 2019 I discuss Pushpay and the announcement that they have reached their goal of being cash flow break even by December 2018.  The big news being that they processed US$5 billion in transactions throughout the year.  We discuss Kathmandu and their Christmas sales which missed their targets and disappointed the market.

Then I do a forward wrap of 2019 and discuss where the NZX is heading in terms of IPOs, I give some ideas for companies on annual reports and then end the show with some advice for 2019.

Tim is currently the chairman of Wellington Airport, one of Infratil's cornerstone investments.

Heading into the final inning of 2018 things get a little bit more quiet on the stock market. However, this does not mean that there is nothing to talk about. Restaurant brands was particularly active this week, announcing that they are bringing Taco Bell to New Zealand and at the same time updating the market on their quarterly performance. The biggest news on the week was the update that the Trade me board has entered into a scheme implementation agreement with Apax Partners.

Because the news flow was a bit quiet this week I also give my 2 cents on all of the giant US tech names, Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft.

It was another week of pre-Christmas updates as many NZX companies either provided their interim reports or gave market updates. It was also another week of M&A activity and I focus in on this again, talking about the failure from Tourism Holdings to sell its Kiwi Experience division - the Orion Healthcare board set its price for the share buyback - and yes - I talk about the second bidder entering the race for Trademe.

In the second half of the episode, I turn the attention to the primary and export industries and discuss updates from Scales, Delegat's and Fonterra.

It was a very interesting week on the NZX. Probably the biggest news was the proposed private equity takeover of Trademe. This was an announcement that was out of the blue and caught me by surprise. We also talk a2 Milk this episode and specifically dive into their options regarding capital allocation. The other stock that we talk about is Metro Performance Glass who had in my view a bizarre update during the week and found their shareprice absolutely smashed because of it.

Episode 16 is the episode that I am trying to go through without saying 'um' - spoiler, I do not succeed. In terms of stocks, it is back to basics with a discussion on one of New Zealand's oldest listed companies Sanford and their yearly 'catch'. I talk about one of New Zealand's best run companies, Mainfreight and finally I talk about the Berkshire Hathaway of New Zealand - Infratil.

I also do a shout out at the start of the episode for podcast sponsors. In my view the idea sponsor will be any company that is involved in the financial markets but would also suit many other businesses - maybe you have a construction company or perhaps small hotel or a brand of some sort. In this episode, we only talk about two things, takeovers and IPOs - all of which contrast each other. Firstly the SLI takeover which is your regular takeover where the acquirer is trying to get 90% of the shares outstanding. The second takeover is not your regular cheese and is structured as a complicated buyback of Orion Healthcare shareholders. Then with IPOs we are talking a speculative investment in Cannasouth a medical cannabis company and AMP is looking to float its New Zealand wealth management business.
