in this episode of the Life and Football Podcast our special guest is Kamari Young. Kamari Young is currently a Tight End at FAMU. The local star from Godby High School was one of the marquee signees in the class of 2019. As a freshman, he single-handedly changed the outlook of the tight ends. Young finished the year with 15 receptions, 191 yards and a touchdown. His lone trip to the end zone was the game-winning play for the Rattlers in a 42-38 victory at South Carolina State. He came through in the clutch with a 15-yard catch with 1:08 left on the clock. In 2021, he's shown a new element to his game with his route-running ability and deceptive speed. All of his touchdowns have been for double figures in yardage. The distance of the other scoring plays was 15 (Fort Valley State), 49 (Alabama State) and 34 (South Carolina State). While at Godby, Young was one of the best athletes in the city. During Friday nights in the fall, he posted big numbers on a weekly basis. In the spring, he translated his strength to track & field. Young was the 2019 district and region champion in the shotput. He later earned First-Team All-Big Bend accolades in the event. His gifts on the football field caught the attention of several schools in Florida and other states. Young is also part of a huge contingency of players from the Big Bend at FAMU. He expresses a joyous feeling knowing he's part of the cultural revitalization of the Rattlers on a local and national stage. Young's athleticism makes it hard for linebackers to keep pace. His wide 6-foot, 3-inch 240-pound frame often towers over nickelbacks and safeties charged with guarding him. Youngs vast improvement plays a key role in the success of FAMU’s passing game. The happiness and excitement on proud parents face are priceless when you handle business in the classroom, the weight room, and field. When parents and other family members see themselves as active learners and achievers who accomplish goals through hard work and perseverance, kids also strive to be their best selves. in this episode of the Life and Football Podcast our special guest is Patrick Smith. Patrick Smith is currently the Head Football Coach for Tenoroc Highschool. Patrick Smith heads into his fifth year as head coach at Tenoroc, and it marks the first year the Titans enter a campaign coming off a playoff season, where they fell to Clewiston in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. It just made a whole different type of atmosphere at our school, Smith said. The kids finally knew they could win and had a chance to compete in ballgames. That makes a big difference for our kid’s well-being. Smith said the same playbook will be used on offense this year. The formula worked so there’s no need to fix it. Our playbook is always to establish the run,” Smith said. That’s what we want to impose on people. Once we establish it, that will open-up other things for us. We are mainly a spread team but we run our spread with a tight end,” he said. Since we mainly run, we may operate some out of the shotgun. We are mostly an inside-run team but we are going to try to add some perimeter runs. We may try to get going with our jet game more than we have in the past. These are kids that we believe have ability, but they are just going to be young, Smith said. Corry Field, once the site of Shanks’ high school athletes running wild and striking fear in every opponent that entered downtown Quincy. That was what high school football was supposed to be,” Gay said. “You’d pull up, see smoke coming up from a charcoal grill, people are cooking. It was a community event with the stadium in the community like that. People just walked up and went to the game.” It was the glory days, but we preached to our kids that the first place a college recruiter goes when they come on campus is not to the coach’s office but to the guidance office to look at your transcript,” said Andy Gay, who in 1998 had 12 kids sign, seven to Division I schools. “We told our kids they had to be a student first and take care of business in the classroom." Gay guided Tigers track in the 1990s, serving as football’s offensive coordinator from 1992-1995, before becoming head coach from 1996-2000. He was athletic director at East Gadsden for 12 years and is now Director of Transportation for Gadsden County Schools. “We were very fortunate to have guys like Willie Simmons, Alex Jackson, Abdual Howard that were strong academic students,” Gay said. “It paid big dividends for them, but I had kids coming in as ninth graders seeing Dexter Jackson or Abdual Howard signing with Florida State, and they became role models to those kids. “It’s a heck of a lot easier to coach a smart, intelligent kid. It makes your job a lot easier as a coach. And I was fortunate while I was there to have some brilliant students as football players.” Gay brags on his assistant coaches from that time, guys like Quincy-raised Eric Sanders, who was his offensive coordinator. Sanders played for Steve Spurrier at Duke and became an academic advisor at Florida for Spurrier before returning to the Tigers, A team full of great Coaches like Coach Battles, Coach Cully, Coach Matthews, and Coach Smith. Taylor played his College Football at Bethune Cookman. Taylor is currently a Reverend at the Excellence Church in Midway, Florida along side his wife Michelle Taylor. God appeared to Minister Greg Taylor and told him to start Exodus-Church of Deliverance. He gave the vision to Minister Taylor, just as He had given the vision of deliverance for the people of Israel to Moses. Upon receiving the vision from God, Minister Taylor, just like Moses, looked for excuses not to lead the people; however, God assured him that He would be with him. God told him to get the people prepared to make the transition to Midway, Florida. Midway is a fast growing, rural area that is easily accessible to Tallahassee, Quincy, Havana and the surrounding areas. Unlike with Moses, God told Minister Taylor that he would be the Moses and Joshua of the people and actually lead them into the Promised Land in Midway. The beginning of the Exodus-Church of Deliverance Ministry was launched with a seven day Exodus Deliverance Tent Crusade. The crusade was held July 1st through July 7th 2007 on Martin Luther King Blvd. in Quincy, Fl. While thought to be unconventional, Minister Taylor preached his own installation sermon on Saturday July 7th. He preached a sermon from the depths of his soul entitled “Just Because God Said It, That’s Enough for Me”. God had told him to start Exodus-Church of Deliverance and although he thought it was a little strange and others questioned him, God had spoken and that was enough. Minister Taylor was installed as the Pastor of Exodus-Church of Deliverance. Along with Pastor Taylor, two other Christians became charter members of Exodus-Church of Deliverance. In honor of Black History Month I want to show love to my HBCU Alabama State University! Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) were established to serve the educational needs of black Americans. Prior to the time of their establishment, and for many years afterwards, blacks were generally denied admission to traditionally white institutions. HBCUs help close the racial wealth gap. In 2016, HBCUs awarded 26% of all bachelor's degrees granted to Black students, while comprising only 9% of four-year institutions. By helping Black students earn a degree, these schools increase graduates' earning potential.

In this episode of the Life and Football Podcast our speical guest was Cody Fagg. At 6’3″ and 210 pounds, wide receiver De’Cody Fagg had the ability to make the tough grab over the middle, but was also fast enough to make plays after the catch during his time at Florida State. In four years at FSU, Fagg had more than 1,600 yards receiving and seven career touchdowns while helping lead the Seminoles to a pair of bowl victories and the 2005 ACC championship.

Growing up about 25 miles away from the campus of Florida State University, Fagg rarely thought about being anything other than a Seminole. A native of Quincy, both of his parents would often don the garnet and gold.

“From the time I was a little baby, all I knew was FSU because my dad and my mom were FSU fans,” Fagg said. “With my dad working at the Tallahassee Airport, I got the chance to meet a lot of the guys when I was younger. I was able to meet Charlie Ward live in person. My brothers and I would go to a lot of FSU games.”

Fagg grew up watching the great Florida State teams of the 1990s, fueled partially by talented receiving corps that included Tamarick Vanover, Kez McCorvey, E.G. Green and Andre Cooper among others. As a youth, Fagg rarely lined up out wide, but made the switch early in his career at Shanks High School.

“Coming up through middle school, I was a quarterback, but by the time I transitioned to high school, I became a wide receiver since my older brother was a receiver,” he said. “He was always talking about Peter Warrick this and Peter Warrick that and once I got the chance to get to see him, there was no one more spectacular than that guy there.”

After graduating high school in 2003, Fagg briefly attended Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia before heading to Florida State where he would graduate with a degree in Social Science. Fagg spent his career playing for the legendary Bobby Bowden.

“He was a father figure,” Fagg said of his former coach. “He took care of all his players and treated them as his own kids no matter the situation. Spending four years with Coach Bowden taught me to be a productive young man off the field and not just on the field.” Fagg still closely follows his alma mater’s football program, which he grew up watching. Fagg said he tries to attend spring practice and some of the summer camps the school hosts. Fagg said he values the time he spent at Florida State and credits his coaches with helping mold him as a young man. The former receiver said he would recommend the school to any perspective recruits or students.

“It was the best four years of my life,” Fagg said. “I think that’s where I matured a lot was off the field dealing with Coach Bowden, Coach Dawsey and Coach Fisher. They’re more like lifetime parents. It was a great experience and I wouldn’t wish anything but the best for any kid who is there now or plans on going there in the future.
