Once we stop, how do we rest? This second week of our focus on sabbath we look at what resting in Sabbath means. Does it just mean taking a day off, or is it much deeper? Does anyone else have ups and downs when it comes to engaging in scripture or maintaining a constant practice of prayer/meditation?
Some studies have shown that daily engagement with the bible is the #1 factor in long-term spiritual growth. Yet, I've learned that I need to change how I engage with scripture, meditation, and prayer every so often.
Additionally, our church doesn't have the long intensive sermons some of us may have become used to depending on for our regular engagement with the bible. Jesus stories are great, they get us thinking and talking (which is better than most sermons), but they are not sufficient for long-term spiritual growth (sermons were never intended to do that either, and the data is in... they just haven't been for the many decades Christians have been listening to them). Instead of seeing our approach as a limitation, I invite us to see it as an opportunity. An opportunity to cultivate rhythms in your life that are proven to make the most difference over time.
A necessary step in growing as friends/followers of Jesus is cultivating daily connections with Him. The great news is we live in a time where there is an abundance of wonderful tools to help us do that. I put this video together to give you my top recommendations.

This is how Jesus used Peter and John to heal a man who has been disabled his whole life in Acts chapter 3. Pastor JD explores this story and helps us wonder how we might become more attentive to others around us, and how we can "give what we have" even if we don't feel like we have the "power or godliness" to influence the situation.

Take a moment from your day and dwell in some scripture with us! We are trying something new on the North City Podcast. For the next 3 months, we will put out a weekly "Dwelling in the Word" podcast. Pastor JD will sit down with North City Staff or community members and record a conversation around a specific passage in the format of dwelling in the word. Dwelling in the word is a way of reading scripture together that focuses on listening to the Holy Spirit through three guiding questions: (1) What stands out to me (where is the holy spirit directing my attention) (2) what questions does this passage raise for me (we are pro questions!) (3) What might Holy Spirit be saying to me/us/north city.

Have you ever found yourself saying something to the effect... man "if that is what it means to be a Christian... I'm out." There is some hesitation these days (often from people who deeply love Jesus) to even identify as Christian in certain spaces. This is due in large part to the confusing cultural messages on what a Christian is and what it means to be "Christian" in America. Listen in as Pastor JD wonders along with the North City Community "What does it truly mean to be a Christian anyway" as we look to the book of Galatians to give us some direction.

Why does church matter? This is a question we are asking through our Jesus stories these days. We're looking to Jesus' story and specifically history around tables to help better understand what he thought mattered most about gathering as his followers. Listen in as Kara Doten (Worship Coordinator) shares the story of Jesus' confrontation with the phrases over authenticity.
What can we learn from the story we have of Jesus around tables? Lots. What if we look to those stories as a way to understand how we can love our neighbors and be the church today? That is exactly what we are doing for the month of January. We start off by looking at the story of a "sinful woman" who interrupts a fancy dinner at a pharisee's house. Jesus' response to her interruptions speaks volumes about the kind of person Jesus calls us to be --- someone who welcomes the unexpected and unwanted guest.

We walk through what it's like to participate in Dinner Church and what the essential elements of the gathering are. Sunday we started a new dinner church discussion series called Growing Pains. In this series, we are looking at Jesus Stories that highlight the ways Jesus navigated tensions we all experience as we grow as humans. This week we look at Jesus' temptation (luke 4:4-13) where Jesus is tempted in ways that reflect how we are constantly tempted.
Emotional maturity and spiritual maturity are inseparable, it is not possible to be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature.
Start a journey towards more emotionally healthy spirituality with us. Listen in to the first week's teaching from Pastor JD on what sets us up for emotionally healthy spirituality, and what Emotionally UNhealthy spirituality can look like.
JD explores these 10 symptoms of emotionally UNhealthy spirituality:

North City is taking a Sabbath ( A break - no community dinner) Sunday. Our community values a rhythm of sabbath in our lives, not just as an occasional practice but as a way of life.
Sabbath is a sort of resistance... a resistance to the "must do and have everything now" culture we live in. Sabbath is a faith-filled stopping, that says "God is providing, and our identity is not in what we achieve it's based in God's family."
Because we are engaging in this practice this weekend we thought we would repost this old teaching by Pastor Sabbath is a faith-filled stopping, that about the Sabbath as a way to reengage our imagination around what Sabbath can be for us, and for you. ou. active but also a way of life.
