In part two of our chat with Claudia Raschke and Tom Hurwitz, ASC, they dove into the importance of being mindful of editing as a continuous process when shooting, not merely as a post-production process alone.
Last November, in New York City, the Manhattan editors workshop held its fifth consecutive evening entitled sight sound and story the art of cinematography.
Jim Kamp was invited to moderate a chat with acclaimed cinematographers Claudia Raschke, DP on such docs as “Mad Hot Ballroom” and “RBG”, and Tom Hurwitz, ASC who was DP on such notable docs as the Oscar-winning “Harlan County, USA” and “The Queen of Versailles”
In part one, Claudia and Tom discussed their perspective on how they approach telling each story visually.
On our final episode from New York, we were joined by fashion photographer, portraitist, designer and concert musician, Aleksandr Karjaka. He extols the similarity of photography and music by describing how he captures the essence of a subject by listening with his eyes --and watching and interacting with the subject, not the camera.
When he’s not behind a camera you might see him behind a clarinet at Carnegie hall or the metropolitan opera house, fashion designing or teaching fashion photography at Parsons School of Design – the New School.
Jason Vong and Vivienne Lee are not just content creators, but workshop leaders, hybrid film - photo shooters and popular influencers.

They joined us at Photoplus to talk about how they started ...and gave tips on developing one’s individual style by encouraging community engagement and infusing personality into content.

Growing up in New York City, cinematographer Charles Libin absorbed the gritty, seventies-era filmmaking of movies made in Manhattan like “Taxi Driver”, “Mean Streets”, and “Dog Day Afternoon”.
The Brooklyn-based cinematographer has over the years done documentary camerawork on several Jonathan Demme films including his Neil Young Trilogy, and numerous performance films including Julian Schnabel’s “Lou Reed: Berlin” as well as feature work for Jim Mckay’s “En El Séptimo Día,” one of the Hollywood Reporter’s ten best films of the year.
Libin’s latest documentary work is the soon-to-be released “The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash”.
We sat down with Charles to discuss his influences growing up in such a heady time in New York during the evolution of on-location shooting.

On episode 45 of Full Exposure, we hung out with photographer John Kane in his bucolic workspace and home in the hills of north western Connecticut. John’s wonderful workspace is a home and a farm and a studio all rolled into one; a location to instill envy in the hearts of photographers. His farm and converted barn/studio is a rustic photo wonderland of technical photo gears and inspiring, simple pastoral splendor.
John has been widely published in magazines and for over thirty years has photographed the world-renowned New York City dance troupes Momix and Pilobolus, collaborating on several book projects such as: “The Human Alphabet” and “Fashion and Color.”

On episode 44, we spoke with Katrina Medoff and Tracy Sayre, co-founders of the Women’s Weekend Film Challenge and got a crash course in how a great idea blossoms into launching a collaborative film project.
The film challenge, is a women-in-film initiative that’s less a contest and more a hybrid networking creative event that places professional filmmakers on crews that write, shoot and edit a short film in just one weekend.
WWFC has produced 24 films — with over 500 professional female filmmakers in New York City. To date, some of the films have been selected for 60 film festivals and counting. The project has grown rapidly and Katrina and Tracy will be launching the film challenge in Los Angeles in 2020.

Daresha Kyi is an award-winning filmmaker who writes, produces, and directs for film and television. Earlier this year at the South by Southwest Film Festival we chatted with cinematographer, Amy Bench, who shot Daresha’s documentary for the American Civil Liberties Union and Little By Little Films, “Texas Strong” an intimate portrait of conservative christian mother Kimberly Shappley and her seven-year-old trans daughter Kai.
In the film, Kai’s mom rejects her community’s beliefs to support her 7-year-old transgender daughter and her struggle to navigate school, where she’s been banned from the girls’ bathroom.

For the last of four interviews from Hollywood, we spoke with legendary cinematographer Dean Cundey. To multitudes of cinephiles, Dean’s career as a visual storyteller needs no introduction. From his childhood fascination with set design to his partnerships with directors like Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis and John Carpenter, Dean Cundey is considered by countless cinema fans as one of the most prolific and influential cinematographers of the last four decades.

He grew up in Chicago and like many directors of photography, he began his career taking photo. He speaks passionately about his enduring love of still photography, on being a champion for diversity in the ASC and how early influences encouraged him --not only to pursue a career in cinema from photography-- but how they still guide his ongoing drive mentor up and coming visual storytellers.

Widely accepted statistics say that while women account for around 51% of film-goers. Somewhere around 4% of directors and only 3% of cinematographers are women. It’s no wonder that Valentina speaks passionately about expanding opportunities for women in the film industry.
Along with shooting features, shorts, music videos and commercials for HBO, Canal Plus, RAI, Showtime and Netflix... Valentina has also dedicatedly supported social-issue groups shooting non-fiction branded content for Planned Parenthood and the Children’s Aid Society. She was also featured in the American Cinematographer for her camera work on the dramatic short “The Stand.”

Her work focuses on people as a vital part of natural cycles, a perspective that is sometimes lost in contemporary views on climate.
You will learn how volunteers and biologists rescue and rehabilitate tropical sea turtles that wash up on the freezing shores of Cape Cod each winter. You'll also learn how Atlantic salmon are a federally endangered species in the U.S. with the last remaining wild populations found in only eight rivers in Maine, as well as the salmon conservation efforts being conducted across New England: including the removal of dams, the opening of waterways and increasing of buffer zones along rivers.

Brooklyn-based Barbara Vekarić is an emerging producer, director and writer originally from Croatia. Barbara’s first feature length-film is “Aleksi” – ‘Lazy. Crazy. Sexy.’ – a slice of life comedy set on the bucolic adriatic seaside. The title character is a troubled, aimless twenty eight year-old, jobless after college, living at her parents vineyard while plotting an escape from her safe but mundane upper middle class life.

Brooklyn-based Barbara Vekarić is an emerging producer, director and writer originally from Croatia. Barbara’s first feature length-film is “Aleksi” – ‘Lazy. Crazy. Sexy.’ – a slice of life comedy set on the bucolic adriatic seaside. The title character is a troubled, aimless twenty eight year-old, jobless after college, living at her parents vineyard while plotting an escape from her safe but mundane upper middle class life.

On today’s episode, we spoke with documentary cinematographer Amy Bench. We initially spoke with Amy about shooting Deresha Kyi’s doc short “Trans in America: Texas Strong” screened here in Austin. Amy directed her own film premiering at SXSW in the Texas Shorts competition.
“A Line Birds Cannot See” is an animated documentary about a 12-year-old setting out across the desert, escaping kidnapers on a search for her mother and a place where they can be safe. After our interview, Amy learned her film won the Texas Shorts Special Jury Award.

Ava Berkofsky was born in Wales, raised in the mountains and cities of California, and is now a Los Angeles and NYC-based Director of Photography. Her background in fine art and documentary photography informs her textured approach to cinematography, capturing the nuance of place, time, and subjectivity.
Ava is also the lead DP of HBO’s INSECURE, where she worked with Director/EP Melina Matsoukas to create and execute the look and feel of the show. She holds an MFA from the American Film Institute.

The Jacob Burns Film Center, north of New York City is a growing hub for cinema education and media literacy giving a platform to emerging filmmakers within its Creative Culture Fellowship program.
Graduate-level students are mentored in developing their storytelling skills as they produce two film projects during their time at Creative Culture. The program and its sponsors have invested in furthering the careers of 22 promising filmmakers.

Victoria Negri is an award-winning writer, director, producer and actor.
She made her feature directorial debut in the 2016 film Gold Star, it’s a story of a music school dropout resistant to connecting with her father but finding herself as her dad’s primary caregiver after he suffers a crippling stroke. Victoria drew from her experience with her own father’s illness to tell the story.
On Gold Star, which won five awards on the festival circuit, Victoria wore a lot hats. She wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the film which co-stars "Stranger Things'" Catherine Curtin and oscar-nominated actor Robert Vaughn in his last on-screen performance.
Victoria stopped by the studio recently to speak about her six year journey making such a personal film and her rising career in the industry.

Delphine Diallo is a New York City-based French/Senegalese visual artist and photographer.
Graduating from the Académie Charpentier School of Visual Art in Paris, she started working in the music industry as a video editor and graphic designer, yet, storytelling through portraiture seemed to be always calling her. Then, in 2008 she relocated to New York to pursue photography.
Her career was boosted with a being mentored by wildlife photographer Peter Beard, a chance encounter with comedian Chris Rock that lead to working with him on the Total Blackout Tour, and a collaboration with artist Shepard Fairey on his “We The People” poster project.
Delphine’s work is defined by immersing herself in the study of anthropology, mythology, religion, science, and martial arts. We recently stopped by Delphine’s Brooklyn studio to talk about her work.

For our first show of 2019, cinematographer Adrian Peng Correia joined us in the studio. Adrian found his joy of cinema in college after leaving an engineering program to pursue history and sociology. Encouraged by a mentor at school, he immersed himself in film, devouring as many books on the subject as he could and renting hundreds of foreign movies at the campus video store.
In one film — Visions of Light — a bible to many aspiring cinematographers, he watched it over and over, cementing his goal to become a DP. With few contacts in the business, Adrian’s determination lifted him up from humble roots working as an entry-level PA in the New York film industry to becoming a leading director of photography for television networks and feature films.

On our year-end episode of ZEISS Full Exposure for 2018, we’re joined by husband and wife filmmaking team Rachel and Richard Prendergast. For their first narrative film, the UK-based production team unearthed a tender real-life story set in America.
Working with a tight budget, their home in east anglia doubled for Kentucky. They cast their daughter in one of the lead roles – and for the co-star, Sylvia the car, searched for a British model that looked more like a boxy American one.

Minnesota native now based in New York, Sinjun Strom is a photographer and visual artist who doesn’t just take portraits -- she makes them. Her ideas take root in detailed journals she keeps, mapping out possible subjects and sets for her elaborately produced images having her hands on on almost every aspect of her photographs. From the clothes to the sets, she even hand-crafts wallpaper backgrounds and props creating an almost cinematic style. She recently finished at the School of Visual Arts in New York, exclusively learning film formats from 35mm to large format view cameras.

For Asif Rashid Khan, his love affair with photography began at age 14 when his father handed him a 35mm film camera. He never stopped photographing. We're excited to be in New York this week for Full Exposure at the Photo Plus Expo. For episode 4 we're joined by Rock 'N' Roll photographer, Greg Watermann. Greg has traveled the world, first as a photo assistant then concert photographer and documentarian and is personal photographer to Pitbull and System of a Down. We spoke with Greg right before he gave his master class in rock photography in lower Manhattan.
