Codependency is a set of behaviors learned in a dysfunctional family system. It’s something you learn how to do to try to keep the peace in a crazy place. You take responsibility for everything in the world except for your own peace and happiness. You rescue other people while desperately wishing someone would rescue you. You say yes to everything and everyone else but yourself. You do this until you are nothing left but a husk of a person.
How can we pull back from rescuing and caring for others and start caring more deeply for ourselves?

Imagination. The word itself conjures up images of rainbows and unicorns. I am immediately transported to the old Figment ride at Epcot. I think of kites flying, the opening to Reading Rainbow from PBS, Anne of Green Gables, Peter Pan, pirate ships. I feel like our entire childhoods are crafted around getting us to use our imaginations. I would say we are discouraged from using our imaginations as we get older, but that just isn’t true. Where do you think our talent for coming up with worst case scenarios comes from? So, my question this week is how can we reclaim our imaginations and use them for good?

Insecurity and Uncertainty. I feel like in these times these two feelings are running rampant. I feel lonely being stuck at home. People in fields like education, the medical field and necessary retail like grocery stores are finding their workloads at an overwhelming increase. People who work in other fields like tourism, entertainment or other retail are facing a period of at the least insecurity, at the most, lay-offs. So, my question this week is how can you stay in the sunshine when you have no idea when the storm is going to clear?

It is week two of work from home for me. How about you? My outer situation has quieted down, so my inner situation is picking up. All the little birds in my brain are beginning to chirp and peck. “Remember that thing you did wrong twenty years ago?” chirp. “What about that situation with your boss?” Peck. I am not about to sit around and torture myself in the midst of a a pandemic, so my question this week is how can we make a conscious choice to draw wisdom from the negative circumstances in our lives?

Last episode, this was the podcast of positivity, but this episode it’s more like the podcast of honesty and vulnerability. I’ve made great progress in the area of personal self-care, but this coronavirus business is turning the world into some kind of post apocalyptic movie. Sometimes letting the sunshine in, is about letting the sunshine on the tender, broken parts of ourselves, healing them and learning how to be more gentle. I’m a little scattered this week, but let’s see what we can pull together.
