Well folks its been fun... 8 years since we started. We made some friends, and we pissed off some friends for reasons we will never understand....Over the 8 years on the show, we have had some of the best of the best (Anglers, tackle manufacturers, fly tyers) in the world and some people who turned out to be horrible 2 faced people that we regret giving time to.... but ultimately, getting you connected and sinking your dentition into the beef while keeping our feet firmly planted on the benthic strata has been an experience that has often seen us "arksking" ourselves why we do it, and the answer has always resoundingly been, to share the love and the betterment of the sport with humility and without ego or politics, based on our own very real experiences that spans now almost 60 years between the 2 hosts. For the most part, we have thoroughly enjoyed our experience, and we hope that we have left you with a new approach to Fly Fishing that involves curiosity, ethics, motivation, a focus on the fishing and an awareness of who the real deal is in this game that can take up so much of your time and money.. but its rewards are priceless.

On this episode.. 2 Trout Guides and 1 Queenslander... We are joined by Shane Wakker of Baw Baw Flyfisher, and Jimmy Barwick of Snowy Valley Flyfishing. The fact of the matter is that we at the Intermediate line simply don't have the experience to provide a technical show about Trout so we got 2 dudes on who know their stuff to do the heavy lifting for that aspect of the show. Kurt, a former Hervey Bay Guide, had the universe show him that it was time to bail and head to Weipa, that was over a year ago now and we catch up with Kurt to talk about this huge life change. Yep, we defiantly still talk about the fishing, we also talk about the changes in the scene up there and finally, someone with common sense talks about stepping in the water in probably one of the most dangerous places on earth do so.

On this show, we have the honour of interviewing one of Australia's most legendary personalities... Robert Mills. Millsy as he is known around the country has many achievements off the water, but what many people don't realise is that Millsy is a Darwin resident who is a student of the Darwin shallow water flyfishing opportunities. We chat to Millsy about the little known skinny water of Darwin harbour and surrounding bays and harbours. Darwin is a Barra town.. its rife with High Viz dudes in tinny's with a full esky of VB's, trolling hardbody lures around for some of the best barra fishing known to man.. but, we don't see a lot about the cloak and dagger skinny water opportunities... When Millsy isn't belting out a tune at a the local Karaoke or hanging with the Hilton family, he's is husbanding Barra and scanning the flats for NT tails. We are lucky that such and Australian Idol is willing to expand on this fishery with us.

On this episode we talk to Martyn White from Flicking Feathers. Martyn is a Scotsman who is living in Japan and is a very much a traditionalist fly fisherman. Martyn, although is very open to modern innovation, is somewhat of an educator when it comes to traditional flies, both Salt and fresh water flies. One of the main things that separates Martyn from others who are also so consistent at making educational content on YouTube and social media, is that he fishes.. In fact, Martyn is arguably one of the most well rounded content creators when compared to his content creating piers on the before mentioned platforms.
On this show, we chat to Martyn about this approach to his content, we also talk about fishing in Japan. The chats about Japanese Sea Bass and the infamous Japanese Permit are very interesting. What can I say to sum up the Tauranga that Gian Booysen showed off... put simply, as a flats destination, Tauranga is the most undersold saltwater flats fishery in the world !! The place is a mecca and for many people standing on the outside looking in (trout fishermen, and Saltwater Fly fishermen from overseas) who are already aware of Kingfish (Yellowtail) on the flats, particularly the famous ray riders which are definitely very very cool, but.... the free swimming Kingfish are truly a special target... Fussy, big, challenging to see and you absolutely will see your arbour knot in 5 seconds flat !! Think GT and Bonefish and you will be almost on the money regarding the approach and fight these Kingfish offer.
Tauranga is a place that no matter the conditions offers truly epic saltwater flyfishing. Personally, the most incredible part of the journey was proper size Snapper in knee deep water, tipping and tailing like any premier flats fish you can think of. They (Snapper) eat all the same stuff you throw at Permit or Goldies, they go super hard ( you will see plenty of backing) and if your fishing deeper than chest deep, your wasting your time.

Last week, I had the opportunity to chat to John Everett from Fish New England. John is a very pragmatic fly tyer, who is a shining example of what translating observations made on the water to the vice looks like. Many people will already know John to be an inspiring man who is always free with advice and time, this also runs true in this interview as we talk about the trials and tribulations involved in fly design for John and how time on the water is what has shaped the flies we see today. Many people will know John as the "Cod Fly" guy, but John is more rounded than that, and although John has spent many hours in the salt and lake Barra, he is well known for tying in his lane, a great lesson for all of us, especially those new to the sport. On Episode 4 of the Intermediate Vice, I am stoked to interview someone I and many people draw a lot of inspiration from, and that guest is Brandon Bailes who is Panther Branch Bugs. Brandon hales from northern Alabama in the USA, where he grew up fishing for the various Bass species his area has on offer. From these experiences, Brandon has developed very much his own style of fly tying and is considered by many as a world leader. Although openly admitting to drawing inspiration from many fly tyers around the world, Brandon has a great skill of adapting flies to suit what he sees on the water which makes Brandon one of the most interesting fly tyers in my opinion... his on water results are excellent to say the least. In addition to his excellent stream craft and inshore saltwater fishing, Brandon is world class when it comes to Bass and Panfish flies. Listen as we discuss the parallels between Australian Bass and Smallmouth Bass that are literally oceans apart but also quite similar. We also talk about the Deerhair bugs we both like to throw at them. The technical talk surrounds the techniques we find common ground on with Deerhair and some of the unique additions and alterations Brandon makes for his own flies that end up seen down many a Smallmouth Bass' throat. This is an awesome episode, and one I hope you enjoy. We will have to get Brandon on again, the recorded show was only half of the phone conversation had when we weren't recording...we definitely have more to discuss in the future.

Pictured here in the corner of the first ever Permit to eat one (caught by host Chris) and now seen in a stack more permit since. In a seemingly short period of time, this crab fly has really got some runs on the board, so we chat about its origins and a few directions that many wouldn't know about. Also, we show our age and chat about the golden era of Saltwater Fly Fishing Tournaments in Australia, and the impact they have had on both product development and the old school community that used to actually meet face to face. Sadly, we don't see anything like these tournaments anymore, with only the Hinchinbrook Challenge and the Darwin Fly Rodders flying the flag for what's left.

On Episode 109 - Chris sits down with both Dave Bradley and Rod Collings who are Australian Fly Fishing Outfitters, a saltwater fly only guiding operation based in far North Queensland. This interview was recorded on location at AFO house Cardwell and is an organic conversation that covers a little about the AFO Hinchinbrook Challenge at the start but it quickly gets into the nitty gritty which is Dave retiring at the end of this year and handing the push pole over the very competent Rodney. This is an interesting discussion for anyone who yet to fish Hinchinbrook or for those who are planning on going back and want to know a bit about Rod and what the future of AFO looks like. On Episode 98 we chat to Scott Mitchell who is the director of the Fraser Coast Fishing Alliance. The FCFA is a non profit organisation that's sole purpose is the see an improved ecosystem in and around the pristine waters of the Great Sandy Straights Marine park which is inside the world heritage listed Fraser Island. The main focus for the group at the moment is removing the anomaly of allowing inshore commercial netting within a designated yellow zone which is essentially the nurseries of the marine ecosystem. This anomaly ( indicated by red lines on GSMP maps) is unique worldwide to this area!! This is an issue close to both of the hosts, but for you as an angler, to pass this off as it doesn't apply to me, you are wrong!! This is a case of industry and commercial gain trumping environmental concerns and the concerns of those who use this marine park recreationally. On episode 89 we go into deep discussion regarding eyes on flies. Eyes are so so much more than an aesthetic item. If your one of those guys who proudly announces " Flies don't need eyes, the fish don't care" you might want to tune out of this one.
Technically we only just scratched the surface, but what we do talk about is the different types, how they apply to certain flies, how they act in the water, glues, tying methods, what material suit eyes and even which ones don't.

Episode 74 - On this our last episode of the year, we present one of the worlds most influential anglers, Jako Lucas the founder of Captain Jack Productions. You may have heard of some of his epic cinematic masterpieces such as " Gangsters Of The Flats" or "The African Tiger", "Relentless Pursuit" or his most recent film that features some epic Australian footage " Glorious Bastards". But what you maty not know is that Jako has guided in multiple countries including Mongolia, Russia, Norway and now in the United States. Jako started his career guiding in the very famous Seychelle's where he established a reputation as a great guide.

Episode 71 - On this episode we asked Neil Cunnington to stay up late so we could talk about fly fishing the famous Tongariro river in New Zealand and also about the roots of his fly fishing experience in Mackay central Queensland. Neil's story is a bit different in that he has gone from Tropical Saltwater Fly Fishing to doubling down on Trout. Neil is a very successful angler who is driven to spend as much time on the water as possible, and on this show not only do we have a detailed conversation about the fishing and techniques, but also managing the voices in Neil's head that instruct him to fish hard and fish often. Episode 69 - Shooting Heads, Haunted Fishing Spots and Sticky Stuff is the title of this weeks plan gone okay. Episode 63- Redemption for Mickey Finn who short changed us last week but turned it on in a big way this week. Young Mickey is wise beyond his years, with more experience than most when it comes to a fresh and varied approach to flyfishing for Australian Trout. Mickey is based out of Tumut NSW and lives and breathes fishing. Mickey is part of the Aussie Fly Fisher clan and guides out of his purpose built float boat most of the year in the snowy mountain region. Although Micky does have a tendency to make up town names, you will still hear in this show that he knows what he is talking about inside and out. A great show from a standout flyfisher of his generation who does look a little like Ewen McGregor as Obi Wan Kenobi.

Episode 58 - Lubin and Casey Pfeiffer are living the life that most people would only dram of. These guys travel the country to attend Fly Fishing tournaments and to create content for their YouTube channel called "The Full Scale Fishing Show". Right now, these South Australians are in Townsville as they make their way around QLD, sampling the best the state has to offer before heading back to Tasmania in the summer to compete in the fly fishing tournament circuit. On the show, we learn a little more about what the fly fishing competition circuit entails and what its provides for the sport. Listen as we try to fill an hour an a half of talking about a species that could easily be narrowed down to a 30 mins chat hahaha. In all seriousness, the Flathead is a great target for flyfisherman. Experienced guys can target slabs and people transitioning fro m trout to Saltwater can also get runs on the board early on with this species. We both genuinely hope that this show inspires you to look at Flathead as a fly target or to re look at them as a challenge.

Episode 54- We chat with Adam Altman about monster Murray Cod on fly. I get the feeling that making comparative or competitive statements would embarrass him, but I don’t think anybody had as many big cod on fly as Adam. It was a real pleasure talking with him about his passion. He is not afraid of a donut, and what makes it more creditable is that he is fishing in below freezing conditions at dawn or dusk throwing cast after cast. Now imagine that you hadn’t had a bite in the last 10 trips... yep, that committed. For me it was a real insight into a guy who does get it done.

Episode 53 - On this episode, we chat to the Luderick Jedi .... Royce Shanks. Royce is a second generation Sith Lord of all things Blackfish. We go over the technical aspects of fly fishing for Blackfish or Luderick. This species is very common along the eastern side of Australia and is considered a bread an butter species by many, they can be caught inside estuaries or on the edge of open water with either very basic gear or you can get as technical as you like. The flies that Royce uses are very interesting and are easily made by any fly tyer which make fly fishing for Luderick a very accessible species for a large part of the population for Australians and New Zealanders....

Epiosde 45 - Ten years ago 3 Aussie flyfishos got together and made what is possibly the most iconic Australian Saltwater flyfishing movie we have seen. Heads or Tails was produced and directed by Phil Jagger (Who is pictured but couldn't join us) however, we were very lucky to sit down with Simon Penn and Geoff Anderson who were the two featured anglers who got some wicked fishing caught on film. You will be disappointed if your not into Permit, but if you are not into Permit, you may need to give yourself and uppercut.
Episode 44 - On this episode we chat to Sydney's premiere saltwater fly fishing guide Justin Duggan. Justin, in addition to being a guide is also a CCI, former zookeeper and passionate photographer. Justin gives us a verbose run down on everything that Sydney harbour offers by the saltwater fly fisherman. An extremely interesting look at Justin's back yard that will be of interest to anyone who thinks that a big city means polluted water and hardly any fish.... and tho this who have previously thought that way, you will be surprised to hear that it is in fact quite the opposite.

On episode 43 we are honored to play a special episode that was given to us by former guest and owner of Australian Flyfishing Outfitters, Dave Bradley. Dave sits down with living legend Harry Spear for 2 separate interviews played back to back . Harry Spear, now in his 70's is a former guide from Florida USA, Harry was around in the days when the sport was evolving rapidly with new flies, lines and rod construction in addition to IGFA rules and a changing tournament scene. Harry is also a highly regarded Tarpon tournament angler and has seen them go from kill events to catch and release events. A real piece of Saltwater flyfishing history that was kindly given to us by one of Australia Saltwater Fly Fishing legends, Dave Bradley.
On Episode 42, we chat to Andrew Chorley (Chozza) from Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing. Chozza has been on the water in Hervey Bay as a full time guide for 10 years and currently runs a 4 boat fleet for everything from flats to Bluewater to impoundment Barramundi. Episode 40 - On this episode, we start off with a very special announcement about one of our hosts. We then move into an approach on planning a fishing trip with an emphasis on heading north for tailing fun. Pretty quickly into the show, we chat about Voltzy's obsession with Black Spot Tuskfish and we get a little technical for those wanting to get the drum on these little blue tractors. Episode 39 - On this episode we chat to Nat Bromhead, former Saltwater Flyfishing guide and creator of the now called Australian Saltwater Flyfishing Forum. We chat to Nat about his time as a guide, his contributions to the sport and also the very beginnings of the forum and the impact it has had on the sport. Nat also talks about the birth of fly caught free swimming black marlin inside Fraser Island, a potentially gone forever Hervey Bay Goldy fishery, in addition to just a few funny memories. Episode 38 - On this show we are stoked to have Dave Bradley on the show!! Dave is one of Australia's most experienced Saltwater Flyfishing guides. Dave comes on the show to give us a brief run down on the man himself and we the move onto a chat about his thoughts on Permit. Dave's thoughts on Permit are real pieces of gold for those who are students of the species. From there we chat to Dave about his ties and interests in Florida and his deep respect for the origins of our sport.

Not many if any hold a candle to the knowledge and experience Craig has after having acquired that much time on the water. A CCI with the Federation of Fly Fishers and all round top guy, Craig is very much the definition of the modern angler with excellent Saltwater experience and the confidence to think outside the box when it comes to trout fishing the pristine Snowy Mountains.
