This season, Sam and I will be walking alongside you as we learn to be in the world, but not of the world. Balancing this can be challenging, but with God's help, we will succeed.

As you heard, this will be Sam's last episode as co-host. He has brought lots of value to The Next Drop Off and I am very grateful for his contribution. He is going to do great things as he pursues higher education, ultimately for the purpose of greater service to God and man.

Season 6 will be out soon! Continue to pray for The Next Drop Off, that God would use us to spread light and hope in a world growing darker.

Grabbing Life by the Horns 1/2

From the beautiful port city of Montego Bay, Jamaica to the bustling city of Toronto, Canada hails this week’s guest, Barbara Harrison. Currently she is the Head of the Nursing Department at Andrews University. We had a wonderful interview talking about her early sources of inspiration and what fuels her passion for teaching today. In this week’s episode, learn:

  • How to accept drastic change and adapt in a new environment
  • How to overcome personal fears and thrive
  • How to take what you read and make it real in your life

Quotes from today’s episode

“Temptation, poverty, adversity, is the very discipline needed to develop purity and firmness.” DA 72.2

“Jesus did not shirk care and responsibility, as do many who profess to be His followers. It is because they seek to evade this discipline that so many are weak and inefficient. They may possess precious and amiable traits, but they are nerveless and almost useless when difficulties are to be met or obstacles surmounted.” DA 73.1

Quotes from Episode:

When successful, he should take no glory to himself, for his success is due to the working of God's angels upon the heart. And let him remember that both in the time of encouragement and the time of discouragement the heavenly messengers are always beside him. He should acknowledge the goodness of the Lord, praising Him with cheerfulness. CM 54.2

If they would cherish true humility, the Lord could do much more for His people; but there are few who can be trusted with any large measure of responsibility or success without becoming self-confident and forgetful of their dependence upon God. This is why, in choosing the instruments for His work, the Lord passes by those whom the world honors as great, talented, and brilliant. They are too often proud and self-sufficient. They feel competent to act without counsel from God. PP 553.3

The evil that led to Peter's fall and that shut out the Pharisee from communion with God is proving the ruin of thousands today. There is nothing so offensive to God or so dangerous to the human soul as pride and self-sufficiency. Of all sins it is the most hopeless, the most incurable.

Peter's fall was not instantaneous, but gradual. Self-confidence led him to the belief that he was saved, and step after step was taken in the downward path, until he could deny his Master. COL 154.4

The Lord can work most effectually through those who are most sensible of their own insufficiency, and who will rely upon Him as their leader and source of strength…PP 553.2

It is a dangerous age for any man who has talents which can be of value in the work of God; for Satan is constantly plying his temptations upon such a person, ever trying to fill him with pride and ambition; and when God would use him, in nine cases out of ten he becomes independent, self-sufficient, and feels capable of standing alone. CH 367

There is no pride so dangerous as spiritual pride. GW92 128.3

In choosing men and women for His service, God does not ask whether they possess worldly wealth, learning, or eloquence. He asks, “Do they walk in such humility that I can teach them My way? Can I put My words into their lips? Will they represent Me?” MH 37.3

Quotes from Episode:

“Humble, fervent prayer would do more in behalf of the circulation of our books than all the expensive embellishments in the world.” CM 80

Solomon was never so rich or so wise or so truly great as when he confessed, “I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.” PK 30.2

Had Moses relied upon his own strength and wisdom, and eagerly accepted the great charge, he would have evinced his entire unfitness for such a work. The fact that a man feels his weakness is at least some evidence that he realizes the magnitude of the work appointed him, and that he will make God his counselor and his strength. PP 255.2

As the will of man co-operates with the will of God, it becomes omnipotent. Whatever is to be done at His command, may be accomplished in His strength. All His biddings are enablings.—Christ's Object Lessons, 333. ChS 258.6

Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His experience testifies to the power of importunate prayer. It is now that we are to learn this lesson of prevailing prayer, of unyielding faith. The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual Christian, are not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth, or the favor of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power. CM 81.3

The Lord can work most effectually through those who are most sensible of their own insufficiency, and who will rely upon Him as their leader and source of strength…PP 553.2

If the workers will turn their attention to that which is true and living and real; if they will pray for, believe for, and trust in the Holy Spirit, His power will be poured upon them in strong, heavenly currents, and right and lasting impressions will be made upon the human heart. Then pray and work, and work and pray, and the Lord will work with you.—Testimonies for the Church 6:319 (1900). CM 80.3

The greatest blessing that God can give to man is the spirit of earnest prayer. All heaven is open before the man of prayer....Pr. 83

Why should the sons and daughters of God be reluctant to pray, when prayer is the key in the hand of faith to unlock heaven's storehouse, where are treasured the boundless resources of Omnipotence? Without unceasing prayer and diligent watching we are in danger of growing careless and of deviating from the right path. The adversary seeks continually to obstruct the way to the mercy seat, that we may not by earnest supplication and faith obtain grace and power to resist temptation. SC 94.2

No one upon earth had understood Him, and during His ministry He must still walk alone. Throughout His life His mother and His brothers did not comprehend His mission. Even His disciples did not understand Him. He had dwelt in eternal light, as one with God, but His life on earth must be spent in solitude. DA 111.3

Matt. 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint

“I asked the angel why there was no more faith and power in Israel. He said, “Ye let go of the arm of the Lord too soon. Press your petitions to the throne, and hold on by strong faith. The promises are sure.” Pr. 72

The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual Christian are not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth or the favor of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power. Pr 125.3

Prayer and faith will do what no power on earth can accomplish. Pr. 61.3

It is a part of God's plan to grant us, in answer to the prayer of faith, that which He would not bestow did we not thus ask.—(My Life Today, 15.) Pr 61.3

Quotes from Episode:

Christian life is more than many take it to be. It does not consist wholly in gentleness, patience, meekness, and kindliness. These graces are essential; but there is need also of courage, force, energy, and perseverance. The path that Christ marks out is a narrow, self-denying path. To enter that path and press on through difficulties and discouragements requires men who are more than weaklings. MH 497.1

Quotes from Episode:

It is even more excusable to make a wrong decision sometimes than to be continually in a wavering position; to be hesitating, sometimes inclined in one direction, then in another. More perplexity and wretchedness result from thus hesitating and doubting than from sometimes moving too hastily. ChL 50.3

I have been shown that the most signal victories and the most fearful defeats have been on the turn of minutes. God requires promptness of action. Delays, doubtings, hesitation, and indecision frequently give the enemy every advantage.—Gospel Workers, 134. ChL 50.4

Indecision soon becomes decision in the wrong direction. Many decide to serve themselves and Satan by not making determined efforts to overcome their defects of character. While many are petting sinful propensities, expecting to be overcomers sometime, they are deciding for perdition. 4T 343

Quotes from Episode:

If any are qualified for a higher position, the Lord will lay the burden, not alone on them, but on those who have tested them, who know their worth, and who can understandingly urge them forward. It is those who perform faithfully their appointed work day by day, who in God's own time will hear His call, “Come up higher.” HDL 17.1

Ex 18:21 “Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.”

“Energy, moral integrity, and strong purpose for the right are qualities that cannot be supplied with any amount of gold. Men possessing these qualifications will have influence everywhere. Their lives will be more powerful than lofty eloquence.” —Testimonies for the Church 3:23. ChL 17.1

There is an eloquence far more powerful than the eloquence of words in the quiet, consistent life of a pure, true Christian. What a man is has more influence than what he says. HDL 7.1

Teachers in the canvassing work have grave responsibilities to bear. Those who rightly comprehend their position, will direct and instruct those under their care with a sense of their personal accountability, and will inspire others to fidelity in the cause. They will be much in prayer, they will understand that their words and actions are making impressions that will not be easily effaced, but will be as enduring as eternity. They will realize that no other can come after them and correct their mistakes, or supply their deficiencies. How important it is, then, that the teachers’ subject, manner, and spirit are after God's order.—The Review and Herald, May 20, 1890. CM 56.3

Although Nehemiah bore a royal commission requiring the inhabitants to co-operate with him in rebuilding the walls of the city, he chose not to depend upon the mere exercise of authority. He sought rather to gain the confidence and sympathy of the people, well knowing that a union of hearts as well as hands was essential to success in the great work which he had undertaken. ChS 174.2

The most complete illustration of Christ's methods as a teacher is found in His training of the twelve first disciples. Upon these men were to rest weighty responsibilities. He had chosen them as men whom He could imbue with His Spirit, and who could be fitted to carry forward His work on earth when He should leave it. To them, above all others, He gave the advantage of His own companionship. Through personal association He impressed Himself upon these chosen colaborers. “The Life was manifested,” says John the beloved, “and we have seen it, and bear witness.” 1 John 1:2. Ed 84.1

Only by such communion—the communion of mind with mind and heart with heart, of the human with the divine—can be communicated that vitalizing energy which it is the work of true education to impart. It is only life that begets life. Ed 84.2

In the training of His disciples the Saviour followed the system of education established at the beginning. The Twelve first chosen, with a few others who through ministry to their needs were from time to time connected with them, formed the family of Jesus. They were with Him in the house, at the table, in the closet, in the field. They accompanied Him on His journeys, shared His trials and hardships, and, as much as in them was, entered into His work. Ed 84.3

Sometimes He taught them as they sat together on the mountainside, sometimes beside the sea, or from the fisherman's boat, sometimes as they walked by the way. Whenever He spoke to the multitude, the disciples formed the inner circle. They pressed close beside Him, that they might lose nothing of His instruction. They were attentive listeners, eager to understand the truths they were to teach in all lands and to all ages. Ed 85.1

The difficulty most to be dreaded is that the canvasser who meets these inquiring souls has not himself been converted; that he does not himself know by experience the love of Christ which passes knowledge. If he himself has not this knowledge, how can he tell others the precious old, old story? The people need to be taught the very essence of true faith, the way to accept Christ and to confide in Him as their personal Saviour. They need to know how they may follow His steps whithersoever He goes. Let the feet of the worker follow step by step the footprints of Jesus, and mark out no other way in which to proceed heavenward.... CM 49.2

Intro – 1:44

Take the word of Christ as your assurance. Has He not invited you to come unto Him? Never allow yourself to talk in a hopeless, discouraged way. If you do, you will lose much. By looking at appearances, and complaining when difficulties and pressure come, you give evidence of a sickly, enfeebled faith. Talk and act as if your faith was invincible. The Lord is rich in resources; He owns the world. Look heavenward in faith. Look to Him who has light and power and efficiency.—Christ's Object Lessons, 146, 147 (1900). CM 115.2

Episode 40: You Can Make a Difference

In today’s episode I had a wonderful conversation with Jeshurun Newman, a dedicated canvasser, leader, and political science major at Southern Adventist University. Many are perhaps perplexed as to what they can do in the midst of such racial turmoil in this country. This episode delves into what canvassers can do to make a bigger impact on the people they canvass. At the end of the day, if we’re not showing love to all people, then the books we leave won’t have as much impact as we think they do.

Episode 39: An Uncomfortable Conversation with a Black Woman

In today’s episode I had the opportunity to talk with Jennah Angyo, a longtime canvassing friend of mine. In today’s racial climate, not every conversation is easy, but if we’re ever going to heal from the wounds of the past, uncomfortable conversations must be had. Regardless of your color, we need to be aware of the problem if we want to be apart of the solution. Canvassers especially should be on the forefront of sharing a message of hope for all people.

Heb. 11:16

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

James 1:12

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Episode 38: Wounded by Racism

This week my dear friend Daniel Raullerson shares his experience with racism on the canvassing field and how God helped him overcome. It wasn’t an easy task as racism deeply wounded his self-image and ultimately led to his leaving the work all together. However, God has a strange way of bringing us back to His service. Maybe you’ve had a negative experience in the work of God, perhaps God is calling you back today. Answer the call, you won’t regret doing so.

Scriptures that helped Daniel heal from the wounds of racism:

Hebrews 12:3

1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

Psalm 139:14

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

1 Samuel 30:6

6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.

Isaiah 26:3

3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Episode 35: Lion Mode Canvassing 5 – Dealing with Rejection

Let’s face it; we all struggle to some degree with rejection. Some of us are born into families where love and acceptance abounds, while others are born into very cold and abusive families. We carry that baggage with us into canvassing and it certainly can affect how we deal with rejection on the field. Today’s guest Aaron Sotelo from Texas Youth Rush shares his story on how God helped him overcome rejection. Joshua Reyna, the assistant Youth Rush director for the Texas conference joins us as well.

Quotes from Colporteur Ministry to help deal with rejection:

Our heavenly Father has a thousand ways to provide for us of which we know nothing. Those who accept the one principle of making the service of God supreme, will find perplexities vanish, and a plain path before their feet.—The Ministry of Healing, 481 (1905). CM 114.1

When there is a continual reliance upon God, a continual practice of self-denial, the workers will not sink into discouragement. They will not worry.—Manual for Canvassers, 22, 23 (1902). CM 114.3

But when tribulation comes upon us, how many of us are like Jacob! We think it the hand of an enemy; and in the darkness we wrestle blindly until our strength is spent, and we find no comfort or deliverance.... We also need to learn that trials mean benefit, and not to despise the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when we are rebuked of Him.—Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 25 (1896). CM 118.3

Workers for Christ are never to think, much less to speak, of failure in their work.—Gospel Workers, 19 (1915). CM 118.4

The Secret of Success:

Joshua had received the promise that God would surely overthrow these enemies of Israel, yet he put forth as earnest effort as though success depended upon the armies of Israel alone. He did all that human energy could do, and then he cried in faith for divine aid. The secret of success is the union of divine power with human effort. Those who achieve the greatest results are those who rely most implicitly upon the Almighty Arm.—Patriarchs and Prophets, 509 (1890). CM 106.2

Ep 31: Lion Mode Canvassing 1 – So what’s Canvassing?

Welcome to the next level of your canvassing experience. The Lion Mode Canvassing series is here to prepare you for what will be the best summer of your life. It all begins with the Lion Mode mindset. This introductory episode will fill you in on the basics of what canvassing is, and why we do this extremely important work.

Episode Outline

What is canvassing?

  • Mission trip
  • Summer job
  • Life-training boot camp
  • Spiritual warfare
  • Sharing our faith through literature: soul saving work

Our publications have a most sacred work to do in making clear, simple, and plain the spiritual basis of our faith. CM 1

  • Why do Canvassing?

    • Love
    • We cannot too highly estimate this work; for were it not for the efforts of the canvasser, many would never hear the warning.—Testimonies for the Church 6:313 (1900). CM 6.2
    • By the canvassing work the truth is presented to thousands who otherwise would never hear it.—The Review and Herald, October 7, 1902. CM 8.2
  • What is a canvassing program?

    • An organized campaign where students gather for 10 weeks to evangelize a certain city
    • Wasn’t always organized: back in the day there were no “programs”
    • More effective as a program, than solo
    • What’s the structure like?
      • Publishing Director, Youth Publishing Director
      • Head Leader, Program Head
      • Co leader
      • Jr Leader
      • Students
    • Where does a canvassing program live?
      • Normally in churches or SDA schools?
  • What do I bring?

    • Bible, journal,
    • Sleeping bag, toiletries, towel
    • Deodorant, and more deodorant
    • Church shoes, 2 canvassing shoes, slippers
    • For everything else, contact your leader

    • Spiritual
      • Faith growth

      • Witness God’s power
    • Financial
    • Social
      • How to communicate
      • How to present yourself properly
      • Make friends for a lifetime
    • Job skills

Conclusion:

  • In choosing men and women for His service, God does not ask whether they possess worldly wealth, learning, or eloquence. He asks, “Do they walk in such humility that I can teach them My way? Can I put My words into their lips? Will they represent Me?” MH 37.3

Ep 30: Lion Mode Leadership 9 – Why Some Leaders Fail

A very wise man once said, “the curse causeless shall not come.” Proverbs 26:2 In every success, regardless of the line of work, there are a number of good reasons for it, and the same may be said of every failure. This is the final episode of the Lion Mode Leadership series. ReNeita and I discuss 7 of the many reasons why some leaders fail in their work. By avoiding these “7 deadly sins” you can be assured that you’re on your way to success.

7 Reasons Why Some Leaders Fail

  • Can’t drive
  • Distracted by relationships
  • No vision
  • No goals
  • Inconsiderate of students
  • Inconsistent within the program
  • Lack of holy drive/ambition

    • “Canvassers need to be daily converted to God, that their words and deeds may be a savor of life unto life, that they may exert a saving influence. The reason why many have failed in the canvassing work is that they were not genuine Christians; they did not know the spirit of conversion. They had a theory as to how the work should be done, but they did not feel their dependence upon God.” Colporteur Ministry 48.3

Below you will find additional supplementary material graciously provided by Bill Krick, Literature Ministries Director for the Pacific Union

What are some reasons why some canvassing leaders ultimately fail in their work?

  1. Lack of personal mentorship by an experienced leader above them, who has more experience than them. And this personal mentorship is most valuable if it happens in the field. Usually, if a student fails, it’s the fault of the leader. Example: When I work with a leader and he says, “These students are terrible!—they are getting lost all day!”—then often it’s because the leader is not giving clean segments and clear directions. It’s the leader’s responsibility to make sure that the student is successful. In the same way, conference literature ministries directors (or whoever is in the position above) are responsible to make sure that his/her leaders are well-trained, mentored, invested in, cared about, etc. Conference literature directors must set up their leaders for success.
  2. Lack of maturity. When leaders are young and/or immature, they don’t realize how to relate to difficult situations that require wisdom/experience. This includes emotional maturity, control of emotions, etc. Lash out in anger once, and you’ve just progressed a long way toward failure!
  3. Lack of edge/focus/drive/fire. We all know that sales do not come down the street and bite students on the back side. There must be some push, some edge. Many leaders are not successful because they just ride waves, whichever direction the waves are going. That may work if you have students who are already trained & motivated, or if you are in amazing territory and all you must do is be a driver…. But it’s not usually that way.
  4. They are not team players/cooperators. I once found out that a leader had taken off and done territory that he wasn’t supposed to do. I called him and said, “What are you doing?!” His only response was, “I have a whole lot of books out!” He had a hard time that summer—and so did his colleagues who had to deal with him. He couldn’t take instruction—he wasn’t a team player.
  5. They are insecure, not able to handle criticism. We must train leaders how to respond to criticism, whether the criticism is valid/constructive, or totally invalid.
  6. They refuse to prepare/do homework. They “wing it” often with territory, worship, etc. This is the great temptation for talented leaders. They have relied on their talents their entire lives, and made a success. But they will never reach their potential—and may indeed fail—unless they are willing to do their “due diligence.”
  7. Lack of ability to think. They can only do what they are told.
  8. Lack of tact. This can sink a leader’s influence in short order. Small problems become very large problems when leaders do not utilize tact.
  9. A walk with God that is so weak that the leader is not able to lead any student to Jesus. If some leader isn’t particularly listening to God, how can God use them to be a successfulspiritual mentor to a student? When it’s time to lead that student to Jesus and His love, they will fail.

The Brady 6 Documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5fdhfVrg1I

Episode Outline

Official beginning – 3:04

The Basic 5 (for leaders) – 6:20

  • Keep students in front of doors/people
  • Keep books in their bag
  • Match students with territory (scout)
  • Work with your students
  • Pray

A helpful phrase to remember the basic 5 is the following, “Canvassing books; where you work, I work; let’s pray.”

  • Canvassing: Are my students canvassing? Are they knocking doors/talking to people?
  • Books: Do all of my students have enough books in their bag?
  • Where you work: Have you found the right territory? Are your students matched with the territory?
  • I work: Are you working with your students?
  • Let’s pray: Are you praying for your students? Are you praying for yourself?

The 6 Principles of Leadership – 18:16

  • The Power of Self-Mastery

    • “The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle; but the soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness.” SC 43.3
    • Recommended reading: Help in Daily Living (Ministry of Healing chapter 40)
  • The Power of Focus

    • “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3
    • “God gives opportunities; success depends upon the use made of them. The openings of Providence must be quickly discerned and eagerly entered.” Messages to Young People 147.3
  • Power with People

    • Your capability as a leader isn’t measured by what you can do, rather by what you can accomplish with others.
    • Your new focus is developing your students. As you develop them, your own skills we be developed
    • Manager vs Leader (taken directly from Mark Sanborn’s book “You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader)
      • Managers have employees. Leaders have followers.
      • Managers react to change. Leaders create change.
      • Managers communicate. Leaders persuade.
      • Managers try to be heroes. Leaders make heroes of everyone.
      • Managers exercise power over people. Leaders exercise power with people.
  • The Power of Persuasive Communication

    • Poor communication leads to poor performance
  • The Power of Execution

    • “Long delays tire the angels. It is even more excusable to make a wrong decision sometimes than to be continually in a wavering position; to be hesitating, sometimes inclined in one direction, then in another. More perplexity and wretchedness result from thus hesitating and doubting than from sometimes moving too hastily. GW 133.4
    • I have been shown that the most signal victories and the most fearful defeats have been on the turn of minutes. God requires promptness of action. Delays, doubtings, hesitation, and indecision frequently give the enemy every advantage.” GW 134.1 (Gospel Workers)
  • The Power of Giving

    • Not just monetarily, but of your time, and of yourself.
    • “Happiness that is sought from selfish motives, outside of the path of duty, is ill-balanced, fitful, and transitory; it passes away, and the soul is filled with loneliness and sorrow; but there is joy and satisfaction in the service of God.” Steps to Christ 124.2
    • “And the effort to bless others will react in blessings upon ourselves…This is the highest honor, the greatest joy, that it is possible for God to bestow upon men. Those who thus become participants in labors of love are brought nearest to their Creator.” SC 79.1

Review

Pray for God to give you the 6 powers of:

  • Self-Mastery
  • Focus
  • People
  • Communication
  • Execution
  • Giving

Official beginning– 2:58

The Transition– 28:00

  • Understand that everything you do has a positive or negative impact on your program.

    • How you dress, your music choices, how you talk to one student can affect how a completely different student reacts to you, how you treat the low sellers, and how you treat the high sellers, when you show up to worship what vibes are you bringing? How do you communicate to the group?
    • Your reputation is the most expensive thing in the world, because once it’s gone, its hard or nearly impossible to buy back.
      • Proverbs 22:1 “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
      • "The largest share of life's annoyances, its heartaches, its irritations, is due to uncontrolled temper. In one moment, by hasty, passionate, careless words, may be wrought evil that a whole lifetime's repentance cannot undo. Oh, the hearts that are broken, the friends estranged, the lives wrecked, by the harsh, hasty words of those who might have brought help and healing!" MYP 135.1
  • Rely more on Christ

The Mission – 38:13

What is the mission of the leader?

  • Set the atmosphere of your program

    • What are the vibes in your program? Chill, safe, fun, happy, spiritual, spiritually safe, champion, confident, winner, equality or stressed, fear, boredom, depressed, not spiritual, spiritual abuse, struggle, distrust, favoritism
    • "Angels work harmoniously. Perfect order characterizes all their movements. The more closely we imitate the harmony and order of the angelic host, the more successful will be the efforts of these heavenly agents in our behalf. If we see no necessity for harmonious action, and are disorderly, undisciplined, and disorganized in our course of action, angels, who are thoroughly organized and move in perfect order, cannot work for us successfully. They turn away in grief, for they are not authorized to bless confusion, distraction, and disorganization. All who desire the cooperation of the heavenly messengers, must work in unison with them. Those who have the unction from on high, will in all their efforts encourage order, discipline, and union of action, and then the angels of God can co-operate with them. But never, never will these heavenly messengers place their indorsement upon irregularity, disorganization, and disorder." —Testimonies for the Church 1:649, 650. ChS 75.3
  • Cast the vision

    • Characteristics of a great vision: simple, clear, ambitious.
  • Make it happen

    • What do I need to do to accomplish a-z?
    • What can you do? What can you delegate?
      • Who’s doing worships?
      • Who’s cooking?
      • Who’s planning activities?
      • Who’s doing announcements?
      • Who’s doing training?
      • YOU CAN’T DO IT ALL

Nugget

“Joshua was now the acknowledged leader of Israel. He had been known chiefly as a warrior, and his gifts and virtues were especially valuable at this stage in the history of his people. Courageous, resolute, and persevering, prompt, incorruptible, unmindful of selfish interests in his care for those committed to his charge, and, above all, inspired by a living faith in God—such was the character of the man divinely chosen to conduct the armies of Israel in their entrance upon the Promised Land.”

Nugget

The Leader whom God chose to overthrow the Midianites occupied no prominent position in Israel. He was not a ruler, a priest, or a Levite. He thought himself the least in his father’s house. But God saw in him a man of courage and integrity. He was distrustful of himself and willing to follow the guidance of the Lord. God does not always choose for His work men of the greatest talents, but He selects those whom He can best use. “Before Honor is humility.” Proverbs 15:33. The Lord can work most effectually through those who are most sensible of their own insufficiency, and who will rely upon Him as their leader and source of strength. He will make them strong by uniting their weakness to His might, and wise by connecting their ignorance with His wisdom.

Episode 11: Quitting is Not an Option

The thought of quitting has hit everyone at some point. Its what you do with that thought that determines your success in life. Join us in today’s episode as Keith Reid, Associate Publishing Director of the Southern Union, shares with us what has kept him going for over 30 years of Literature Evangelism. Wherever you are in your canvassing experience, this episode is sure to help you get to the next level. Episode Outline

Official beginning – 1:53

Testimony from Sandybell Suero (@sansueror) – 7:27

Story from The Open Door, p. 88 “Her Final Request” – 10:00

Interview with Keith Reid – 16:08

Highlights from Interview with Keith Reid pt. 1

Sam: What are some common myths about Literature Evangelism?

Keith:

  1. Can’t make a living

  2. Must be a salesman to be successful

  3. It’s for those who can’t find a job

  4. No one reads books anymore, everything is digital nowadays

  5. The books are too expensive

Sam: Why do some canvassers fail?

Keith:

LE work is a calling! Not just anyone can jump into the work and be successful. When God calls you He equips you with talents to be successful.

Lack of faith and conversion

“No one can be a successful soul winner till he himself has settled the question of surrender to God…” CM 49.1

“The difficulty most to be dreaded is that the canvasser who meets these inquiring souls has not himself been converted; that he does not himself know by experience the love of Christ which passes knowledge. If he himself has not this knowledge, how can he tell others the precious old, old story?” CM 49.2

“The secret of success is the union of divine power with human effort.” CM 106

Sam: What hurdles did you have to overcome when you started canvassing?

Keith:

Give up company car, no vehicle

Not much extra cash

Navigate the bus system, use public transport

Mortgage and other bills

Very little training

Sam: How did you overcome these hurdles?

Keith:

  • I never entertained the thought of quitting

Sam: What 3 things keep you going after nearly 37 years of Literature Evangelism?

Keith:

  1. Quote from Life Sketches, “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history.” LS 196.2

  2. The calling God placed on my life and how he trained me.

“If I left this work, who would do it”

“We’re like Navy Seals, special, and not easily replaced.”

  1. Spiritual growth: If I weren’t involved in LE work I would either probably be lost or would not have experienced this kind of spiritual growth.

Conclusion – 37:46

Nugget of the day

“He who called the fishermen of Galilee is still calling men to His service. And He is just as willing to manifest His power through us as through the first disciples. However imperfect and sinful we may be, the Lord holds out to us the offer of partnership with Himself, of apprenticeship to Christ. He invites us to come under the divine instruction, that, uniting with Christ, we may work the works of God.” DA 297.1

Episode 10: Wishes, Goals, & Dreams

Have you ever made a wish? Did it come true? Have you ever set a goal and reached it? Or dreamt something and saw it come to pass? Episode Outline

Official beginning – 1:49

Testimony from Acacia Gomez – 8:12

Story from The Open Door – 13:44 “Persistence Paid in Full” p. 70

Group Discussion – 22:43

Wishes, Goals, & Dreams

Wishes: something you desire to happen without any specific actions on your part.

Goals: something that can be measured and achieved within a certain time frame.

Dreams: something you desire to become, or something you’d like to see in life that lasts forever, or for the long term.

The #1 Goal of the canvasser is that your faith will grow. It doesn’t matter how many books you get out, how much money you make, or how well your van does as a leader. Are these things great and worth achieving? Absolutely! I believe we should always be striving to do better each day. However, if that becomes your focus, you are bound to fail and burn out. What matters most as you set goals, and dream is that God is developing your faith in the process. The more faith you have, the better your canvassing experience will be. So the next time you go out and canvass, before you set your book goal, or your van goal, ask God to develop your faith, and you will be surprised at what He will do for you.

“The secret of success is the union of divine power with human effort.” CM 106.2

“Success in any line demands a definite aim. He who would achieve true success in life must keep steadily in view the aim worthy of his endeavor. Such an aim is set before the youth of today. The heaven-appointed purpose of giving the gospel to the world in this generation is the noblest that can appeal to any human being. It opens a field of effort to everyone whose heart Christ has touched.” Ed 262.1

Conclusion – 59:07

Nugget of the day

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”

Episode Outline

Official beginning – 2:01

Testimony from Manny Jimenez – 12:57

Story from The Open Door – 15:32 “Fixin’ for a Change” p. 63

Group Discussion – 22:18

Common Mistakes Canvassers Make

  • Judging a book by its cover: Overcome the temptation to skip people based on appearance or skin color. Talk to everyone!
  • Trying to succeed on your own: Focus on how God is blessing, and remember to thank Him for what He is doing through you. Pride is your #1 enemy in the canvassing work.
  • Not being engaged in everything that’s going on: Learn to interact with both students and leaders and become an active part of the program.
  • Not understanding the mission: Develop a strong reason why you are in the program and let that mission drive you.
  • Undervaluing the books: Read the books to obtain a higher value and experience. As your value for the books increase, so will your ability to canvass them.
  • Skipping devotions: You cannot give what you do not have. In our devotion time, our cup is filled with blessings to then pour into the lives of others. Fill your cup with Jesus before heading to the field.
  • Not asking for help: Seek out those who are succeeding, and ask them to teach you. There is always a better way to do things, so learn from those who are doing it well.

Conclusion – 38:32

Nugget of the day

“He was never elated by applause, nor dejected by censure or disappointment. Amid the greatest opposition and the most cruel treatment, He was still of good courage. But many who profess to be His followers have an anxious, troubled heart, because they are afraid to trust themselves with God.” DA 330.3

This week we invited some canvassing leaders on the show to discuss different ways to start a successful canvassing day. Episode Outline

Official beginning – 1:53

Testimonies from Botho and Klay – 8:39

Story from The Open Door – 12:28 “From Unwilling to Enthusiastic” p. 69

Group Discussion – 19:51

How to Start a Successful Canvassing Day

  • Trust in God
  • Pray for specific things
  • Follow the schedule (team time!)
  • Morning devotions
  • Think positive thoughts
  • Eliminate fear
  • Start preparing from the night before (evening devotions)
  • Believe you WILL succeed before you succeed

“But when we give ourselves wholly to God and in our work follow His directions, He makes Himself responsible for its accomplishment. He would not have us conjecture as to the success of our honest endeavors. Not once should we even think of failure. We are to co-operate with One who knows no failure.” Christ Object Lessons 363.1

“The secret of success is the union of divine power with human effort.” Colporteur Ministry 106.2

“Your feeling of dependence will drive you to prayer, and your sense of duty summon you to effort. Prayer and effort, effort and prayer, will be the business of your life. You must pray as though the efficiency and praise were all due to God, and labor as though duty were all your own. If you want power you may have it; it is waiting your draft upon it. Only believe in God, take Him at His word, act by faith, and blessings will come.” Testimonies for the Church vol. 4 538.2

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Tim. 1:7

How to Reset after Rejection (37:15)

  • Understand that Jesus has experienced your rejection
  • Focus on the interested people (search for the ripe berries)
  • Realize that it isn’t the end of the world
  • Walk fast
  • Count your blessings
  • Remember what God has done in the past
  • Pray with people
  • Talk to your leader (Mobile-1)

Conclusion – 46:45

Nugget of the day

“Success depends not so much on talent as on energy and willingness. It is not the possession of splendid talents that enables us to render acceptable service; but the conscientious performance of daily duties…” Colporteur Ministry 76.1

Story from Open Door – 15:15 “Expected” p. 102

Interview with Will Pires pt. 2 – 23:14

Conclusion – 45:00

Nugget of the day

“The canvasser need not be discouraged if he is called to encounter difficulties in his work; let him work in faith, and victory will be given. “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” Whenever a book is presented that will expose error, Satan is close by the side of the one to whom it is offered, and urges reasons why it should not be accepted. But a divine agency is at work to influence minds in favor of the light. Ministering angels will oppose their power to that of Satan. And when through the influence of the Holy Spirit the truth is received into the mind and heart, it will have a transforming power upon the character.—Manuscript 31, 1890. CM 115.1

Episode Outline

Official beginning of episode – 3:10

Testimony by Judy Ornelas – 11:23

Storytime with Tio Smerdis – 14:08

Sam shares his story – 19:12

3 Lessons from Sam’s Story

  1. Trust God’s Plan

“Often our plans fail that God's plans for us may succeed.” Ministry of Healing 473.3

  1. Be yourself

  2. Wait! Your blessing is coming!

Devotional Thought “Purpose” – 46:25

Have you ever felt like you're not worthy of the calling that God has made to your life? Here’s what Paul has to say:

“For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”” 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

“It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones. As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, our confidence in Him will be more constant, our love will be quickened, and we shall be more deeply imbued with His Spirit. If we would be saved at last, we must learn the lesson of penitence and humiliation at the foot of the cross. As we associate together, we may be a blessing to one another. If we are Christ’s, our sweetest thoughts will be of Him. We shall love to talk of Him; and as we speak to one another of His love, our hearts will be softened by divine influences. Beholding the beauty of His character, we should be “transformed into the same image from glory to glory.” 2 Corintihans 3:18” Desire of Ages 83

Segment 1: Catching Up

3:08 – Official beginning of episode

Segment 2: Testimony

6:45 – Kim shares her testimony

Segment 3: Smerdis’ Story pt 2

12:24 – Story continues

Highlights from the Story

“There are more people who leave the church and don’t come back than those who leave the church and do come back.”

“It doesn’t matter where you are, we’re all called to the same thing which is to share the gospel and invite others to the kingdom of God. I think the way that we are to fulfill that calling is different.”

“People don’t talk about the struggle with sin after coming to Christ”

“Truth is, before we came to Jesus…there was no struggle between good and evil, there was no temptation, we were slaves to sin!”

“The love of money is the root of all evil”

“The canvasser is a messenger for God”

Segment 4: Devotional Thought

32:10 – 3 steps to responding to God’s call:

“God speaks to us through His providential workings and through the influence of His Spirit upon the heart. In our circumstances and surroundings, in the changes daily taking place around us, we may find precious lessons if our hearts are but open to discern them.” SC 87.2

  • Get like Paul: “Lord what would you have me to do? (Acts 9:6)
  • Get like Ezra: Sought God’s will and did it (Ezra 7:10)
  • Get like Jesus: Surrender your will for God’s will (Luke 22:42)

“Too many, in planning for a brilliant future, make an utter failure. Let God plan for you.” MH (Ministry of Healing) 479.2

“Happiness that is sought from selfish motives, outside of the path of duty, is ill-balanced, fitful, and transitory; it passes away, and the soul is filled with loneliness and sorrow; but there is joy and satisfaction in the service of God.” SC 124
