Rolf Bienert’s Journey
Rolf Bienert’s path to becoming the Managing Director of the OpenADR Alliance is a fascinating one. Originally from Germany, Rolf spent 21 years in California before moving back to Europe, where he now resides in Portugal. His career began in telecom, but his transition to energy standards was driven by the rolling blackouts in California in the early 2000s. These experiences laid the foundation for his work in creating more reliable and efficient energy systems.
The Evolution of OpenADR
Jim Frazer and Rolf discussed the origins and development of the OpenADR (Open Automated Demand Response) standards. Initially conceived to address California’s energy crises, OpenADR has grown into a robust protocol used worldwide. Rolf explained how OpenADR 1.0 started with simple signaling to flatten energy peaks and how it evolved into the more comprehensive 2.0 and now the 3.0 versions. These updates have expanded the protocol’s capabilities, integrating modern web services and supporting more sophisticated energy management strategies.

One of the critical points Rolf emphasized was the need for standardized communication in energy management. Without such standards, integrating various energy resources, from solar panels to electric vehicles, becomes a daunting task. All About Engineering Design
Ralph talked about his research on engineering design software, BIM, and digital twins. For those who might not know, he explained that engineering design software helps design things like plants, bridges, highways, and modern buildings. BIM focuses on buildings and the detailed data and documents related to them.
The World of Digital Twins
One of the most interesting parts of our talk was about digital twins. These are not just virtual copies but are detailed, data-filled models of real things. They are super useful when designing and building something. With digital twins, you can make sure everything is up-to-date and avoid mistakes, saving time and money.
Challenges in the Engineering World
Even with all these powerful tools, there are challenges in the engineering world. Ralph mentioned that there aren't enough engineers, especially in places like the US and Europe. This has led to more work being done in countries like India, which produces a lot of engineers every year.
To deal with these challenges, there's a focus on making engineering work faster and better. Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in design software to automate many tasks. Ralph gave an example of how software with AI can design a part much faster than before.
What's Next in Engineering?
When asked about the future, Ralph thinks there will be more automation in designing things. This will be done using AI, new construction methods, and the continued use of digital twins.

Ralph ended our chat with a message: he hopes more young people will become engineers. In today's world, where technology is everywhere, engineers play a big role. And for those who choose this path, it's not just about the money. It's about the joy of seeing your designs come to life.

How to Maximize Sustainability in Chemical Processes - with Vineenth Ram of Oli Systems

Vineeth:
what we do is understand the chemistry of the process. So for these complex chemical processes, we develop very sound understanding based on the principles of thermodynamics and kinetics. And once we understand them, we're able to model and simulate them very rigorously and very accurately.
Once you do that, you can start asking a lot of what if questions and scenarios and trying to adjust, you can adjust your inputs and understand you know, what kind of outputs you get. So you can understand how to design these parameters and optimize them. And essentially, this is applicable both if you're designing equipment, as well as if you're designing your process. And now we've also taken it to real time operations, where you actually can make sure that you're operating them more optimally as well with real time monitoring and automation.
We've been doing this for several decades in terms of sustainability, we just didn't necessarily coin it as sustainability and bring it to the forefront. But historically, we've had a lot of applications and handling of a treatment of hazardous nuclear waste materials, and how you store them, and make sure that they're safe, and understands the corrosion mechanisms inside them. So that's been one of our early applications where we've actually looked at making things more sustainable.
Simply put, for a role I perspective, sustainability is about, you know, a number of different things. It's improving air quality, is water quality, it's just driving more reuse and, you know, sort of better utilization of assets and capabilities. It's also in a big way, driving that decarbonization and energy transition, you know, whether it be through this carbon capture processes, or through more importantly, clean energy sources, so really a wide range of areas and maybe now I can drill into each one of them a little bit to give some details for the audience. So really, I'll start with things like you know, greenhouse gas emissions…..

The sunEtrike solar electric transport solution handles the vehicles, batteries and solar as distinct units for planning & scaling. The pilot shuttle service mentioned in this episode achieved its targetted ROI of 30% before being shut down by the Coved pandemic and end of contract.
These low-speed electric tricycles are best suited to last mile transportation of people and cargo. They have capacity to carry up to seven passengers or 500 kg of freight, with top operating speeds of 50 km/h. The trikes can travel approximately 40 km per battery charge, depending on weight and hills. At its peak, our pilot was running 220 to 250 km per day.

A recent discussion with Lisa Williams of OLI Systems and ARC’s Jim Frazer explored the expanding details of first principle chemistry and its applications in plant operations. This new approach uses the science that did post mortems on equipment to now perform prevention and detection of corrosion and scaling.
Lisa describes a new approach in detail, one where operators are informed over a specific pressure and temperature range, that certain types of conditions will occur. As an example, precipitation of minerals coming out for scaling, when you get to a certain pressure and temperature, they're going to start to form in the pipes thus you lose capacity and you lose efficiency. Similarly, with regard to corrosion, you will know when you start to have a corrosive environment, when you start to deplete the metal inside of the piece of equipment, before you have a loss.

EvariLUX– The Convergence of Regional Illumination Photometers with Geographic Information Systems, A Discussion with Fritz Feiten, Streetlighting Consultant at Ameresco
Join Fritz Feiten and Jim Frazer, former Illuminating Engineering Society Roadway Lighting Committee Chair as they discuss EvariLUX, an innovative 3D approach to planning, visualizing and implementing outdoor lighting applications. EvariLUX overlays IESlight output files, which are unique to each fixture type, onto a three dimensional map. This confluence of datapoints allows a very intuitive visual containing insights such as the actual predicted light level on the pedestrian crosswalk or on your own front door keyhole. The varying heights of poles, spacing of poles, and varying elevations and grades of roads and sidewalks creates a true 3D representation, where under lit and overlit conditions can be quickly observed and corrected.
What exactly is EvariLUX?
EvariLUX™ is a suite of tools to understand and analyze regional illumination photometrics within a Geographic Information System (GIS). EvariLUX is similar to bringing illumination data into Google Earth. EvariLUX strives to overcome the challenge of comprehensively understanding lighting design across an entire project area.
EvariLUX uses IES files and onsite elevation data to creates 2 primary outputs: and illumination surface and illumination volumes. An illumination surface is displayed using points and contours across the project area. Illumination volumes represent the 3D space illuminated above 1 lux.
For one EvarlLUX application, Evari GIS Consulting completed a field audit of more than 60,000 streetlights across the City and empowered City staff to choose between 11 luminaires to install at each location. (Evari GIS Consulting did not make any decisions about which luminaires to use or where they should be installed.)
Illumination Points and Contours
Illumination points and contours provide a complete picture of the seamless underlying values within the illumination surface. The values on the ground are created using real world-elevation.
In order to pass as much information as possible, the points and contours are represented by their value, rounded and optimized for performance at different scales.
Represented numerically and pictorially are illumination contours - lines of equal illumination levels. Illumination contours and points represent the same underlying illumination surface values in different ways. Like the illumination points dataset, this illumination contour dataset covers all areas above .02 lux. A typical dataset can have over 250,000 individual lines ranging from 0 to 100+ lux.
Illumination Volumes are also represented as the 3D space where light is above 1 lux. The illumination volume uses the IES file to determine the lighting conditions after the fixture is installed.

Many illumination volumes are typical in even a small neighborhood. Each volume is created individually using the prescribed IES file and the on-site elevation.
A typical dataset can leverage a variety of different IES files identified earlier across the entire street light count. EvariLUX can use 12, 30 or a hundred different IES files.

What are the practical applications of AI in smart cities today that can actually benefit citizens? In our latest Smart City Podcast, we interviewed Seth Dobrin, chief AI officer for IBM, and Graham MacDonald, CIO and VP of technology and data sciences at the Urban Institute about their collaborative AI-based approach to mitigating the adverse effects of gentrification in American cities and communities.
The theme of this podcast was "AI for Good." There's a lot of hype surrounding AI, and it can be difficult to find truly practical and actionable use cases, but this is a great use case with direct benefits for people being affected by increasing gentrification in many US cities and communities. It's also a great example of a public/private partnership that is producing results. The focus of this project was to put the tools and technologies offered by companies like IBM into the hands of nonprofit research organizations like the Urban Institute so they can do research and execute projects that provide the greatest benefit to the people that need it most.
Seth describes the technology side of the solution and Graham describes the outcomes. Here's what Seth had to say about the project:
"How do we help the Urban Institute better manage gentrification in the communities? How do we ensure that it's done in a trustworthy manner? How do we ensure that it's fair and free of specific types of biases, or in this case, how do we help them identify specific types of biases? How do we make the models transparent? How do we make them robust? And how do we ensure that we're preserving the privacy of people that are being impacted by these models? What we did was we brought our tools, our Cloud Pak for Data with Watson Studio, to the Urban Institute, along with some folks from the data science and AI elite team, to work on this problem."
Armed with these tools, Grant MacDonald and the Urban Institute team were able to develop a solution to measure and mitigate the adverse effects of gentrification, where affluent residents move into long-established neighborhoods comprised of middle-class and working-class citizens who in many cases find themselves priced out of their own homes because they can no longer afford to live there. According to Grant:
"We initially worked with HUD to define neighborhoods that were gentrifying, which were declining, and which were inclusively growing. The vast majority of neighborhoods happened to be in the unchanging or inclusively growing category. And there are a small number of neighborhoods that are in the declining and gentrifying category. And what we were trying to do was to find those neighborhoods, and then use machine learning, taking the data that we have to project or predict, in real-time, what is happening right now."
You'll have to listen to the rest to get the details, but it's an excellent real-world example of a practical application of AI that provides true economic and social benefits to citizens and communities.

The ARC Smart City Podcast is back and this time we interview Andre Ristaino who is managing director at ISA, the International Society of Automation. Those in the world of smart cities may not be familiar with ISA, but most of those in the power and energy industry probably are. ISA creates and administers industrial and OT level standards that apply to critical infrastructure and manufacturing. Their standards are very widely adopted in these sectors not just in North America but around the world.
ISA has put a huge amount of effort into developing cybersecurity standards used at the OT level. The ISA 99 standards committee first began its work on a comprehensive industrial and OT level cybersecurity standard back in 2002. The standard has since been adopted internationally by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as the IEC 62443 Standard. ISA also supports a huge range of other cybersecurity-related efforts such as ISA Secure product certification, the ISA Global Cybersecurity Alliance, training programs, and liaisons with other standards bodies like NIST and NERC.
ISA's cybersecurity standards and other related efforts like ISA Secure have huge potential for smart cities and critical infrastructure. They're already being adopted in the electric power, water and wastewater, and building automation sectors. This podcast gives a great overview of what ISA can do for you in the realm of cybersecurity, what the standards are, and some key resources for end-users and owner/operators of OT-level technologies and assets.
Vehicle Electrification has been gaining serious momentum lately for personal and commercial vehicles alike. Fleets are electrifying to reduce TCO and carbon footprint, improve driver/customer experience, and comply with a growing body of regulation. Private drivers mostly charge their vehicles at home, but rely on public charging networks to extend their range. In this most recent episode of the ARC Smart City Podcast, we sit down with Sachin Gangwar and Yuvarajan U of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to talk about the value of smart city platforms, particularly about the impact of COVID-19 as a catalyst for digital transformation and increased adoption of IoT platforms for smart cities.
TCS has its own smart city platform called IUX, which offers a comprehensive solution for workplace resilience. Many cities and enterprises are faced with a number of new challenges when it comes to managing worker health and safety in the midst of the pandemic. Suddenly, worker health and wellness have become a major factor in risk management for any organization.
Even for organizations where worker safety is of particular concern because of potentially hazardous environments, COVID presents new challenges in preserving worker health and safety when it comes to shift scheduling, congregation avoidance, contact tracing, and publicly available health data. these are all different sources of data that must be integrated into a common environment so they can be viewed holistically and managed in a consistent and standardized manner.
Smart city platforms can be a great way to implement workplace resilience solutions to ensure the health and safety of workers are preserved in both operational (OT) and enterprise environments. Sachin and Yuvarajan both discuss the burgeoning need for these solutions, not just today as a response to the pandemic, but in the future as well.
With COVID, the workforce is also becoming more distributed, which will be a long-term trend even after COVID. This also presents new risks. from the podcast:
"Employees will be working in a distributed manner going forward, because that is something which organizations have realized. And it's something which is working, it's the new normal Now, what it means is because the employees are working in a distributed manner, it becomes very important that you have to monitor the risk these employees will be facing, because they now would be working in different environments, environmental risk COVID being one of them. Other environmental risks will become very important to monitor, and you have to see the impact whenever such an event happens. So, our solution is mainly addressing that key concept about a distributed workforce, how you can actually assess the risk in a distributed workforce."
On the relevance of workplace resilience solutions moving forward:
"These solutions are still relevant beyond the COVID-19 situation. If you see these enterprises, municipalities, and all other organizations, we're learning how these were liabilities in their safety or compliance or operations or their customer interactions. All these vulnerabilities can destroy the chain of the business and can continue to do so during a crisis, whether it is a pandemic like COVID-19, or a natural disaster, or political or social unrest. And this pandemic menace stimulated the development of new solutions that leverage the insights of IoT and other data sources to understand and predict that are helping organizations to recover more quickly and build resilience."

Cities are adopting technologies that are much open approach, they want to make sure they're prepared for,( God forbid) the next pandemic. There has been a digital divide that has been very, very apparent during this difficult period that we all went through. Technology is now moving into spaces where people did not even imagine it would be there.
On 5G and AI:
"With the combination of 5G and AI, it's going to change the way we're looking at smart cities in general. In 5G, we're already seeing a lot of growth in privately deployed 5G networks, especially what you said about CCTV and video analytics, right. So, I think we have this kind of convergence of pretty powerful edge processing right now. "

Sure, Be happy to. one of the, we've got three major projects are three major activities that we've got going on here in Chattanooga. The first one is a collaborative of different governmental agencies, academia, hospitals, health care people, the electric power board here. The individuals that installed our fiber network about 10 years ago, that created the gig city.

So, that group is kinda working together to identify opportunities in smart cities more from an economic development perspective and to help bring technology and research to our universities here. So, which leads into the first or the next project, which is our Testbed. The city and the University of Tennessee Chattanooga have built a living laboratory on one of our corridors here in town.

It's about a mile and a half long, has 11 intersections on it, where we have deployed numerous sensors for vehicle, detection, air quality detection, mckusick detection, to get a very good sense of how that corridor or operates from an urban perspective. Some of the things that we're doing there are actually starting to test out some of the ... technologies for live spat, challenge the signal facing and timing transmission between vehicles and infrastructure and from the infrastructure back to the vehicles. So that's been going on here for about 18 months, now.

The next project we've got is a collaborative project with the Oak Ridge National Labs, and the National Renewable Energy Lab on a digital twin here in the community, which is computer simulation of our entire city, basically. And the primary points that they're looking at with that is the traffic system, how we can reduce emissions, are improved fuel economy, reduced energy, use this as a department, event, US Department of Energy project. So, but it's, it's in its second year now, they're getting ready to roll out the next two years of the project. And they're expanding that to be much more of a regional perspective than the one specific corridor that they've identified. And I've been working on for the past two years. Well, Kevin, let me jump in that, That, that's fascinating.

Addressing the crucial issue of cybersecurity in today’s smart buildings is a challenge. Like the manufacturing sector, the building automation sector is going through its own digital transformation. Increasingly, end-users are moving away from the older proprietary systems of the past and adopting edge-to-cloud computing architectures. There is a drive to deploy more lower-cost sensors, both wired and wireless, to gather as much data as possible. At the same time, the industry has a considerable installed base of legacy building automation systems, applications, devices, and networks that must be managed, maintained, and gradually modernized.
All of these factors create unique cybersecurity challenges. The ubiquitous connectivity and remote operations promised by IoT bring with it many security concerns. Legacy systems pose their own risks and vulnerabilities and are no longer the obscure systems that nobody is interested in anymore. Attackers take advantage of known vulnerabilities in both new and existing systems to disrupt operations, steal customer data, and cause destruction.

In my local community in south Palm Beach County, Florida the importance of community cohesion and a coordinated response to the coronavirus pandemic has been demonstrated through citizen dialogues on NextDoor, a community building smart city platform. Of course, many other community platforms are also just as important – from Twitter to Facebook and even Meetup.
In the NextDoor example, here in South Florida, over the past weekend, news was shared by citizens about a local confirmed case, quickly community information began to be shared about national, state, city and many other very local “hyperlocal” resources. This includes neighbors helping neighbors through doorstep delivery of food, medical and other supplies.
National and Local Coronavirus Resources
Additionally, like many other social media platforms, NextDoor has formally been in contact with the CDC and WHO in order to act as a conduit to local residents. Perhaps more importantly Nextdoor has enabled local public agencies to bring relevant Coronavirus information to their areas, down to very small areas of even a few hundred residents – or smaller.
As NextDoor is active in 11+ countries, and the Coronavirus is having a dramatic impact worldwide, you might consider participation in the hyperlocal discussions being hosted by this unique platform
So what is NextDoor?
Founded in 2011, Nextdoor is an online platform positioned as the “world’s largest social network for the neighborhood”. Specifically, its mission is to facilitate conversations that empower neighbors to create stronger and safer communities. Nextdoor is pursuing this objective by defining the physical boundaries of individual neighborhoods, and building an associated, private online community site for each. Users are required to verify that they have a local address before they are allowed to join a neighborhood’s Nextdoor site. For example, users commonly leverage the platform to find babysitters, locate lost pets, sell personal items and review local businesses

The thermal module in a camera is more of a sensor than a camera because it displays images based on heat that it senses. Using standards and best practices allows the designer, installer, end user and maintenance organizations to adopt proven, tried and true methods for each step of a project – over the entire lifecycle – from project conception to project retirement and disposal.
Warning: Not all Standards are Created Equal
As pictured above, the standards continuum ranges from a single or two-party proprietary specification to a full international standard, in a time span that is measured in months to years. Further categorization can be applied regarding the de facto or de jure legal status. Specifications and requirements are defined by single or multiple persons, alliances or organizations. Often proprietary in nature, they are quickly developed to support interconnection and integration of various devices and systems, usually over a period of months.
Alliances, trade groups, and consortiums are groups that embrace a particular technology, and form a formal "interest group" to promote that view. The difference between an alliance and a formal standards group is in both the rules and the actual deliverable. Since any number and balance of interested parties can form an alliance, the rules under which they operate are very broad.
The 2005 World Summit on Social Development identified sustainable development goals, such as economic development, social development and environmental protection. This view has been expressed as an illustration using three overlapping ellipses indicating that the three pillars of sustainability are not mutually exclusive and can be mutually reinforcing. In fact, the three pillars are interdependent, and in the long run none can exist without the others. The three pillars have served as a common ground for numerous sustainability standards and certification systems in recent years.

As you can see from the image above, sustainability includes:
1. The Preservation of Environmental Resources
2. The Enhancement of Societal Goals – also known as ‘quality of life” or "safety" and,
3. Economic Viability – since none of these goals can be accomplished without a sound, robust economic plan.
Notice too that these are akin to a vision statement, without much specificity. Thus it is incumbent upon you as the project creator to document multiple, measurable parameters for each of the pillars above. Later these will be used to rank, and ultimately approve or reject any proposed requirements.
In practice, as approaches to achieving any goal is envisioned and discussed, practical processes must be implemented. This includes a comprehensive investigation of each stakeholder community. By an examination of the user needs of individual members of each stakeholder community, common well-supported user needs can and should be developed. As this process progresses, it is also critically important to remember that these needs should be solicited and documented over the entire life cycle of the proposed project – from envisioning, design, testing and implementation to post-install operations, maintenance and eventual retirement. The Smart City 3.0 is a Smart City initiative is driven by public expectations – or more clinically “user needs”. While Smart City 1.0 and 2.0 are driven by technology and government decisions respectively, Smart City 3.0 is neither driven by the dazzling technologies nor the government alone.
In Smart City 3.0, the public should be able to express their views with the government acting as a facilitator and as a definer of agency-specific user needs.
This stakeholder-based model drives social change, helps to eliminate objections, minimizes design errors, and ensuring technology is properly applied in the development of city. A well applied Smart City 3.0 effort satisfies the three pillars of sustainability as well protecting the natural environment, enhancing human quality of life while maintaining fiscal prudence.

What is the Systems Engineering Process?
The Systems Engineering Process (SEP) is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on first defining customer user needs and subsequently the required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, and then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation.
There are multiple ways to represent the systems engineering process. One way, the Systems Engineering "V" Diagram (seen above), represents the typical life cycle of any system or project. Whether the system being deployed consists of a basic computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system for a transit agency, or a more complex interface between a traffic management center and a public safety agency, all systems will follow some variation of this life cycle.
User Needs are generated through a robust examination of needs from all stakeholder communities that have an interest in the envisioned project. In the next step, each of these needs are used as a foundation in order to develop measurable unambiguous Functional Requirements. Each need must have a functional requirement and each requirement must have an underlying foundational user need. The last step in this process is to create a test plan that confirms the traceability of needs to and from their dependent requirements.
