Danya Sherman founded KnoNap, a company to combat drink spiking, where someones drink might be spiked with something like a rape drug. We talk about her experience as a non-tech founder, how she dealt with the pressure to change how she presented as a young founder, and founder mental health. Motherhood involves a lot of sacrifice, but it can get tricky when we start to gauge our value as humans by the self-denial we express, or how much we suffer for others.

I'm wrestling with this now, and I think this conversation about maintaining mental health and preventing burnout is worthwhile even if you're not a parent, but someone who has a passionate project or mission that is bringing you close to burnout.

And if you're not a mother but a spouse, here are some tangible things you can do to support her in postpartum. Cuz it's really effing hard.

We’re talking about all about the idea that careers are winding paths, they are not a straight line. What I found so inspiring about our guest, Sosamma Samuel-Burnett is that she has built an amazing career, but stayed aligned with her mission and calling amongst many different checkpoints in life. Not an easy thing to do, and Sosamma shares some great, tangible advice on how you can do this in your own career.

She shares how she found her calling in human rights, and how she has maintained her focus on her calling despite the many career twists and turns.

ABOUT SOSAMMA

After a decade in Sacramento CA, where she established and led William Jessup University’s public policy academic department and public policy institute, Mrs. Samuel-Burnett and her family now live in Loveland, CO. She holds degrees from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and the University of Minnesota Law School, as well as extensive human-rights work in Mexico, South Asia, the Middle East, and throughout the USA. She combines her advocacy, education, and legal experience to serve as the Founder/President of G.L.O.B.A.L. This is the LAST episode in our 6 part series on diving into entrepreneurship from the ground up. Today, we talk about:

How to figure out whether your idea is a hobby or a business

Real-life examples from our entrepreneurship journeys

How to incubate your next idea while you have a full-time job

If you have a specific questions on these topics for me or Lisa, shoot it over to me on Instagram or Twitter @heyemilykennedy or email at heyemilykennedy@gmail.com

ABOUT MY COHOST LISA

Lisa Thee is a seasoned leader, entrepreneur, and board member. She famously came out of corporate America and blew up her seemingly perfect corporate job to go into the tech startup world and pursue her passion of protecting vulnerable children, collaborating with big names like Intel, Google, Microsoft, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. And she’s a good friend of mine.

And for those who don’t know me, I became a CEO at 23, launching an AI tech startup that has grown to assist in the recovery of thousands of victims of sex trafficking globally, and counting.

Enjoy!

HAPPY 100th EPISODE!!

Wayyy overdue, today I’m sharing (THE SECOND PART of!) my story. How I came to found an AI tech company to fight human trafficking without a tech or business background.

Unlike most times I get to tell parts of this story, this is very unfiltered… it’s what you would hear if we were just sitting down for drinks and you asked about my story.

I cover how I started a tech company without a business or tech background, how we funded it, how I got deep into anti-trafficking work, and what success means to me.

Wayyy overdue, today I’m sharing my story. How I came to found an AI tech company to fight human trafficking without a tech or business background.

Unlike most times I get to tell parts of this story, this is very unfiltered… it’s what you would hear if we were just sitting down for drinks and you asked about my story.

I cover how I first learned about human trafficking as a teenager, formative people in my life like a quadriplegic teacher who changed how I looked at life and helping others, my time in college, finding my major, etc., and how these things came together to motivate me to seek purpose in my career.

Today we talk about how social media is increasing human rights accountability, using technology to identify victims after atrocities like 9/11, what he loves about being a professor, and just generally a look into someone who was a big impetus in my life to do the work I do now. He was one of my thesis advisors at Carnegie Mellon.

ABOUT JAY

Dr. Jay Aronson is the founder and director of the Center for Human Rights Science at Carnegie Mellon University, and a Professor of Science, Technology, and Society. Aronson’s research and teaching examine the interactions of science, technology, law, media, and human rights in a variety of contexts. His current project focuses on the documentation and analysis of police-involved fatalities and deaths in custody in the United States. Previously, Aronson spent nearly a decade examining the ethical, political, and social dimensions of post-conflict and post-disaster identification of the missing and disappeared in collaboration with a team of anthropologists, bioethicists, and forensic scientists.

It’s a compelling discussion for how technology intersects with human rights and I hope you enjoy.

Today we talk about Tiffany’s work to fight child sexual exploitation online, how she built a software engineering career without a CS degree or coding bootcamp, and how to find the practical application of your passion whether in or outside of your day job.

[Disclaimer: this episode was originally recorded in July 2020.]

ABOUT TIFFANY

Tiffany Moeller is a data scientist and software engineer whose passion is to leverage emerging technologies to help combat exploitation of vulnerable populations online. Now working as a software engineer at Cloudflare alongside their trust and safety team, Tiffany is currently developing a free service to help website owners prevent the spread of child sexual abuse material online.

Today's episode starts out with a little musical surprise, so be sure to check it out! Today we're talking with professional fiddler Johanna Sö about what it’s like being the only girl in a Celtic Irish rock band, being a full-time musician, composing her songs after a period of injury, and what she does to stay inspired.

[Disclaimer: this episode was originally recorded in August 2019.]

ABOUT JOHANNA

Born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, Johanna Sö announced her intention to someday be a professional violinist at the age of three, in the matter-of-fact way that a child might announce they would like to be Super Man. After a couple years of begging for an instrument, she began classical violin lessons. She’s performed at Carnegie Hall and with Grammy Award winners, and over two decades later, “playing the fiddle” became a professional pursuit when she stumbled upon a crazy bunch of musicians called The Town Pants, with whom she plays and travels the world playing Irish and Celtic Folk Rock music. Check out more of her compositions linked in the show notes and on Spotify, Pandora, and iTunes.

Happy Black History Month! Since episode 053 (Dear White Listeners) I’ve been thinking and reading about anti-racism. In non-profits in particular and this tension between helping others, but not following a white savior model. So today’s guest has some really interesting thoughts on this.

Today we are talking all things international development, white supremacy in non-profits, and feminism. We talk about why feminist approaches to international development matter, how white supremacy manifests itself in non-profits, how women can be their own biggest enemies for disrupting gender stereotypes, and advice for those going into international development.

Happy Human Trafficking Awareness Month!

I first met Maggy Krell back when Backpage was in the press as making millions of dollars off of exploitation. As a young person in my career, I was super inspired to see this badass woman taking on these criminals head-on. In this episode we talk about sex trafficking online, the Backpage case and how it went down, how she handles a high-stress job, and how to fight sex trafficking long term.

ABOUT MAGGY

Maggy Krell is nationally recognized as a legal trailblazer who has dedicated her entire career to seeking justice for vulnerable victims. She served as deputy for four Attorney Generals, taking on high impact cases against predatory lenders who took advantage of struggling families, sex traffickers that preyed on vulnerable teenagers, and attorneys that used their position of trust to exploit immigrant families. She is well known as the lead prosecutor on the case against Backpage, known as one of the busiest places online for the exploitation of sex trafficking victims. While coping with PTSD from a birth trauma, Bekah discovered coding and went from English teacher to software developer. She is also a mom of 4, an active member of the online coding community, and co-Founder of virtualcoffee.io.

Everything about her inspires me, check out episode 27 when she first came on the podcast and talked about her journey to becoming a software developer.

In this episode we talk about:

  • How it’s been in her first year of being a dev…the best and the worst
  • Biases she’s experienced in the industry as a mother and career changer
  • How virtual coffee came to be, how she built it, and who it’s for

I really enjoyed this conversation with Bekah, and I hope you do, too!

Bekah graduated from the Flatiron School Software Engineering program in May of 2019. Since then she has specialized in front-end development, co-founded a developer community called Virtual Coffee, launched a blog to write about the trauma she went through, and has continued to mom her four kids.

Soooo…I’m starting something new…and it’s kind of scary! But rather than share about it after I’ve done the hard thing and it’s been a huge success, I thought I’d share what’s going on while I’m in the middle of it, when the path isn’t clear and I’m learning as I go.

I’m building a new e-course from scratch on how to start and launch your own podcast, and want to bring you along on the journey! Happy belated International Women’s Day! It was just this past Sunday, so it seems like a good time for today’s topic.

We are talking about Shine Registry. It’s a platform for women who are starting businesses to ask for the things they need in the style of a wedding registry…it’s built on the idea that if you can ask for a gravy boat when you are getting married, you should also be able to put out the ask for your business: network connections, equipment costs, server hosting fees, etc.

Today we’re talking with Founder and CEO of Shine Registry, Emily Wazlak. We discuss that ever-present “likeability” factor and stereotypes for women in leadership, asking for and receiving help, managing yourself, and what to do in a bro-y startup environment. And at the end, there are some extremely tangible (and FREE) steps you take to support women entrepreneurs. Enjoy!

Phuong Phillips is Chief Legal Officer for Zynga, the game developer who makes games we all know and love, like Words with Friends. She started her career a a Corporate Attorney at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, and worked on the IPOs of little companies you might have heard of…SolarCity and Google.

She’s such a powerhouse and her amazing career inspires me just as much as her effervescent presence and the wisdom she shares. We talked about how her parents fled Communist Vietnam to give her family a new life, how she prioritizes, her advice for making yourself invaluable in any company, and increasing diversity and inclusion in the gaming world.
