Quilen Blackwell is the cofounder of the Chicago EcoHouse and Southside Blooms, organizations dedicated to eliminating poverty through sustainability. He’s the grandson of Arkansas sharecroppers who moved to Milwaukee so his grandfather could secure a factory job in the aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement when racial tensions were high.
After earning his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Blackwell went on to serve in the Peace Corps in Thailand. When he returned to the United States, he enrolled in a Chicago ministry school where God led him to commit to a life of community service.
He began by tutoring high school students in Englewood, where he saw the devastating impacts of inner-city poverty. Eventually he and his partner (now wife), Hannah Bonham Blackwell founded the Chicago Eco House to transform blighted urban lots into sustainable flower farms. That grew into Southside Blooms, which provides jobs on these farms and in a flower shop to at-risk youth.
Quilen is always amazed to see how God’s hand moved through the suffering his grandfather endured working the land in the Jim Crow South all the way to the freedom he now enjoys and shares with others.

Alan, Eric, and their families decided to give 100% of their highly successful business to charity to keep wealth from taking over their lives. About 50 percent of all company earnings are donated immediately to charity. The remaining 50 percent is used to grow the business, and in 2007, they gave the entire company to National Christian Foundation. Though they still run its daily operations, the brothers will never reap its accrued value; they keep none of it.

On this episode, Bob Schlegel shares how he has experienced the ministry of angels throughout his life and through the process of building the United States’ leading supplier of concrete landscaping products for big box and commercial customers.
Bob Schlegel was raised on a small farm in rural Ontario. Resources were limited, but his loving parents were always quick to share with others in need. Despite at least two near-death experiences as a child, including a broken neck and being mauled by two Great Danes, he proved to be a natural-born entrepreneur at a young age.
Although he wasn’t a top student, he excelled at mathematics and graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He later became a CPA and married his high school sweetheart and registered nurse, Myrna. Together, they launched their first family business, a chain of fifteen high-end senior living centers in Texas.
In 1980, Schlegel and a partner launched Pavestone Company, a manufacturer of concrete landscape products, which struggled in the late ’80s due to a recession, but rebounded and became the nation’s leading supplier of concrete landscaping products for big box and commercial customers.
The Schlegels sold both of those businesses for substantial profits and today are involved in a myriad of new enterprises and philanthropic endeavors. Their four entrepreneurial children are also involved in some of those business, as well as their own.
He’s the author of the new book, Angels and Entrepreneurs: A Lifestyle Formula for Starting Your Own Business and Riding the Rollercoaster of Entrepreneurship.

Archie is chairman emeritus of Chesapeake Energy, the second largest natural gas producer in the United States and the retired chairman of the board of ConocoPhillips. He was instrumental in orchestrating Conoco’s IPO separation from DuPont in 1998, the largest in U.S. history at the time, and in negotiating the merger of equals between Conoco Inc. and Phillips in 2001 which created the third largest energy company in America and the fifth largest in the world.
In 1998, Dunham was recognized by the World Affairs Council as Houston’s International Citizen of the Year and inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. The most meaningful award he has ever received was being named Houston’s Father of the Year in 1998.
In addition to giving extravagantly to other worthy causes and organizations, the Dunhams have also been tremendously generous to Houston Baptist University which has resulted in various landmarks within the campus named in their honor that attest to their strong Christian faith and values, including the Dunham College of Business, Dunham Field, the Linda and Archie Dunham Theater and the Dunham Bible Museum.
