Last week we poo-pooed the semi final week as the least interesting, and boy were we wrong! This weekend's game were amazing! The young Port team had a nice link to the 1961 Hawks team. We sat down with friend of the show and author Nick Richardson to talk about his new book which covers the life of Albert Chadwick, a man who had such an incredible life. As well as being a premiership captian/coach at Melbourne he was also a member of one of the most decorated squadrons of the Australian Flying Corps in World War I, a recruiter for the RAAF during World War II, and a skilled businessman who led Victoria’s Gas and Fuel Corporation in the radical transformation. as well has having a hand in the Melbourne Olympics, Moon landing and the Centenarry test.

So, 1940.... With many players rushing to help out and join the war effort, some teams struggle to cope. The VFL introduce an interesting idea to help raise money for the soldiers. Essendon have a new nickname, a new coach and a new game-plan, look for them to be on the up and up after years in the doldrums. Melbourne go from strength to strength but also gain an unwanted record. The race for the top 4 heats up in the last few rounds and Collingwood struggle without Ron Todd and seem to be in free-fall, but there is more controversy to come for them.

With the world alliances quickly disintegrating the Victorian football league faced a changing of the guards…of sorts, with new teams rising to power. Melbourne, having missed finals last year, began to dominate and their big scores ticked over week after week. Hawthorn achieved a first..., and Fitzroy began to show more glimpses of past glories. Several league coaches have been replaced and we will find out their fate. Dick Reynolds takes on a new role at Essendon, and at Collingwood, Jock McHale does something for the last time ever. We are living in a world where Collingwood has won back to back flags to take their tally to 11, head and shoulders above the rest of the competition. Their competition would come from the Checker Hughes led demons, who had in 36 returned to finals, and this team accomplished something they hadn’t since 1921. The team to beat in 1934 were the reigning premiers, South Melbourne or as some called them, The Foreign Legion, with their team of talented imports, taking the flag from Richmond in 1933.

Other teams started to employ a similar tactic to build their teams up.

Richmond got off to a flyer, looking very dangerous, while South’s form was actually up and down. Collingwood was back near the top with an injection of youth. North Melbourne’s optimism doesn’t last long, and Footscray’s coach finds himself in an interesting predicament. The Brownlow race ends in interesting circumstances and Carlton and Collingwood revisit the animosity of the 1910 grand Final.

This is the 1932 episode, also known as 'Frankenpod', it has been a busy few weeks for those of us that run this podcast, so we have recorded bits here and there when we could, we weren't always in the same room together. This is the result, not as smooth as we would like, but ready to go.

Here is a rundown for the episode. Things once again implode at Stkilda, while South Melbourne have devised a genius plan to lure new recruits over to play for them. Collingwood continue to play at a high standard and Carlton unearth their own new recruits that help them stay up the top.

We recently sat down with official Collingwood Historian Michael Roberts to talk about the Collingwood machine years, 1927-1930.

We discuss....

Collingwood were able to equal Carlton’s record of 3 in a row the previous year, so 1930 would be their opportunity to make history. The depression was really hitting the country hard and supporters looked more than ever to their sporting heroes for a distractions from the hardships of everyday life. Checker Hughes at Richmond and Dan Minouge at Carlton were coming for Jock McHale's team, along with everyone else who wanted to knock off the machine.

Now we are in the 1930’s we begin to mention several big names, who will later be hall of fame legends.

Add to that The VFL had to work out what do to with a 3 way tie in the Brownlow, all make for a very interesting year.

With Melbourne claiming their first flag since 1900, expectations for the 1927 season were high. However, if you think expectations at Melbourne were high, Collingwood had lost the last 2 grand finals, the fans were busting down the door for a premiership, their drought now going back to 1919. Richmond were ready to start roaring again with a strong list and "Checker" Huges in charge. Carlton, no longer wanted to sing to be out of finals. North were looking for their first win in well over a year. There was optimism at Fitzroy with some new recruits bought in. We also introduce a new segment lead by the Kazman.

SO MUCH HAPPENED

to begin with we have a new finals system, we have the death of two important VFL people, There are coaches switching clubs (of have they???). The Collingwood board, not used to the lack of success, make some changes at the top. Fitzroy begin life without Freake and Parratt, but recruit a suitable replacement. There are goal post shaking scandals and debate about how many men can stand on the mark. And finally the season ends with an interesting phone call to Syd Barker and then the first Championship of Victoria Match.

1923 was a year that saw the Ladder change and league powerhouses fall. Essendon continued to thrive in their new home of Windy Hill, and South Melbourne’s fortunes return. Some Carlton players cause a bit of a stir and down in sleepy Hollow, the pivots stumble upon a new nickname.
