Separating responsibilities amongst team members is an important step in preventing financially fraudulent situations and reduces the risk for the organization. Nonprofits need to have systems in place to prevent one person from becoming overwhelmed with their responsibilities and making mistakes. Creating this segregation can make quite the difference in preventing minor mistakes from becoming much larger ones.

Organizational risk in the nonprofit world is a huge issue every organization must prepare for and have policies in place to handle when it occurs. In this episode, we are looking at a New Orleans nonprofit who must answer questions on its financial makeup, regarding the services they provide, how they make money, and how much they have made. What makes the story even more interesting is that the founder of the nonprofit and the President of a for profit company that works with them are married, thus creating confusion and raising eyebrows into their financial standing. This also raises questions regarding potential conflict of interest and how funds are being allocated and spent with both organizations.

This week, we turn our focus to Georgia, and the Companions for Heroes foundation that works to pair veterans with service animals. There had been inconsistency in the number of veterans and animals paired together, which has led to mistrust in the program and has led to an investigation. It is important to be consistent with the data your agency reports in order to maintain trust in the public and the community you are serving. This also calls for consistent data reporting from your organization’s accounting and communications department in order to provide transparency for all parties involved. Thanks for listening!

This week, we highlight a story about the Mississippi Department of Human Services dispersing funds to organizations long after the retirement of a former director. It is not uncommon for the government to give funds to agencies to disperse to nonprofits.
However, it is important to establish milestones and deadlines in order to maintain control over how and when these funds are spent. It’s critical to outline expectations for these agencies up front in order to maintain authority and create accountability for all parties.

DIY 990
This week, we discuss how fiscal sponsorship can go wrong and damage an organization's reputation and financial standing if you select the wrong firm. Fiscal sponsorship is when an organization outsources their financial management to a third party. If you decide to employ an outside firm to handle your money, make sure you do your due diligence when selecting one. Hiring a firm capable of managing all your financial needs will help you prevent any hiccups down the road. It is imperative to interview several firms and not only those referred to you in order to find the best fit and ensure your finances are handled properly and soundly.

DIY 990
This season on Nonprofit Nuggets, we will focus on recent stories about various nonprofits missteps and how to avoid some of these mistakes.
In this episode, we head to Monterey County and discuss an embezzlement scandal of over $700,000 by founder and director of Central Coast Kids and Families, Lolita Garcia. While many of the employees overbuilt their work and could fraudulently alter timesheets and had too much financial leeway, the onus of keeping such activity in check falls on the board of directors. This speaks to the need for the board to build out a compensation committee in order to regulate salaries among staff.
There is also a need for performance evaluations for staff, and a conflict of interest documentation to keep everyone accountable and separate any business and personal interests.

This season on Nonprofit Nuggets, we will focus on recent stories about various nonprofits missteps and how to avoid some of these mistakes.
On today’s episode, we are discussing a story out of Austin, TX around an accountant found guilty of stealing 1.3 million dollars from his organization. This Rodeo Austin accountant subsequently lost his accounting license and left his former employer in financial strife, as they used the proceeds from their annual Rodeo to fund scholarships and other community initiatives.
In order to prevent situations like this from occurring, it is of utmost importance to file consistent expense reports and audit those reports in order to track any suspicious spending. It is also important to limit access for employees to financial resources. This will also help corral any outlandish and curious spending and help keep all parties accountable.

In this episode of NNP, we discuss severance misappropriation from the Maryland Environmental Service.
A severe miscommunication between a former MES CEO, board members, and the Governor of Maryland has left all parties in a lurch, as they debate over who knew what regarding the severance payout arrangement that was (supposedly) in place. We highlight the importance of documentation in everything that you do in order to create a paper trail to hold all involved parties accountable and have enough proof to cover yourself in case there are questions.

Cherrise shares what has changed her life with us behind the scenes. Listen in... I would probably say just recognizing that I can't do it all. So I now start out my day actively working on meditation and mindfulness to keep me still before the beginning of the morning, so that I'm poised to be successful during the rest of the day. Then I also just changed my environment, in terms of who I follow, what I read, what I listen to, the music that I listen to, that type of thing. It definitely has to have more positivity to it. The grants landscape has been changing for the past 12 years, and it's getting harder and harder, tougher and tougher to have people part ways with their money, so you need to focus on other ways to earn revenue into your organization through either fundraising or helping empower your participants to empower themselves or be a part of the organization or whatever the case may be.

You need to build trust within the community. And so I would say for any organization, whether you're black, white, whatever the key is, is to talk to people, get to know and understand who they are, what motivates them, that type of thing, and truly build a relationship with them where you're actually interested in helping them and serving them. To view the entire transcript, click here.
If you were working with some other consultants, they may have what I like to call blinders and they know their niche. They may not be as well versed on looking at the organizational organization from a high level. And so that can sometimes lead you to end up having to hire additional people, to get all of the services and the things that you want. We tend to operate more on a full service basis. So I think that that's an added value. Click here to view the full transcript.

If your organization is not paying minimum wage to the executive director, what you're doing is creating an imbalance, and you're perpetuating inequities, because people can't work for free. Click here to read the full transcript.
The budget is truly a reflection of your mission and you should budget accordingly. In the past, I've worked with organizations who thought about the budget in terms of what can we get approved. That is not the way to think about the budget. Click here to view the entire transcript.
If you waited till budget season to create your budget then you are already too late. You waited too long because budget season is the most stressful time for most organizations. It is the time when people are just trying to figure out, well, how do we get this done? How do we come in under budget? Click here to read the full transcript.
Organizations all the time talk about doing a strategic plan and getting the board together and they're going to work through all the things that they want to do for the next couple of years. And honestly, in my opinion, that is a complete waste if you never take time to consider the costs. Click here to read the full transcript.
COVID has taught many of us quite a few lessons: good, bad, indifferent. One of the things that has come to the forefront for many of us is that even in the face of uncertainty, we need to put a plan together. I had a whole list of all the things I wanted to accomplish this year, and so many of them did not happen because they were related to travel or related to me being around other people. I'm a big proponent of be thoughtful about the agenda planning process. Don't just look in Robert's rules and say, "Oh, this is what an agenda is supposed to look like." You have a lot to work with when it comes to really thinking about how are we planning this time, which is, for most nonprofits, it's two to three hours of this space of time when the board has the ability to make really important decisions and take really important action. I think it's something that hopefully all organizations are taking very seriously because it should be taken seriously. To read the full transcript, click here.
I've been forced to really rethink a lot in terms of strategically, how am I trying to grow my business, promote my business, position it. And because I'm so new to consulting, it's certainly something that I'm constantly rethinking. I think one of the things I've especially had to learn recently is the necessity of rolling with the punches and being able to adopt a mindset of there's really no perfect way to do this, so I'm going to do what I can and trust that things can grow and evolve in ways. I wish more nonprofits understand and embrace the idea that governance matters. I think that particularly managing governance sometimes gets treated as either a side desk job or an afterthought, or it gets lumped in with another function. Click here to read the full transcript.

When you think about governance as really the strategic wheel of the organization, if that's not healthy and if you don't have the systems and processes in place, your organization is going to suffer for it. Click here to read the full transcript.

Amanda Wallander Roberts walks us through why the logic model is a tool for a nonprofit organization that connects what we do with why we're doing it. What we're actually doing those activities to the outcomes we're anticipating. And based on that logic model, you can create an evaluation plan and really say, "Okay, for everything we think we're going to do, are we meeting those outcomes? Are we actually changing the communities in the way that we expected?" And then we can also evaluate are we implementing programs as planned? Read the full transcript by clicking here.

Welcome to season three of the Nonprofit Nuggets Podcast. This season is going to be about infrastructure and systems. You know, the things I love. I'll be talking to some friends and you get to hear their interviews spread out over time. Because as you know, we keep these things short and sweet, but for those of you who want a little bit more in depth, and you're like, I'd rather listen to them all at one time, head over to our website, we'll post those there. To view the full transcript, click here.
This is the final episode for the season, which was all about the IRS form 990 the information return for nonprofits. Throughout the season, I wanted to make sure you got a better understanding of the return and how it fits into the foundational pieces for a healthy nonprofits. To view the full transcript, click here.
This episode is about storytelling and why I prefer the IRS 990 compared to any other tax form. It's because it allows nonprofits to really highlight what they do and tell the story of what are some of your accomplishments of yours programs? This is a great time because if you remember in our episode about missions, I talked about your activities having an impact on a large community. This gets to be that time where you can talk about that, where you can say, Hey, we are now able to serve 500 people when we were only serving 250. This is when you can talk about those types of growth. Click here to view the full transcript.
This episode is specifically about the tools. So as you know, I think tools are, like you can't do it all in your head. So you need things outside of yourself to get your nonprofit going, to keep it sustainable, manageable, practical. And the 990 is one of those things. People underestimate what you can do with your 990. It is a tool. So because it is an information return, it is where a lot of funders are going to gain information about an organization, especially if you do not have your audited financial statements or any financial reports on your website. The 990 helps funders and helps outsiders understand what you're doing and it helps them compare you. I know I said last season we are not about comparison. We're not about competition, but comparisons are practical.
Click here to view the full transcript.
The IRS wants you to highlight what's happening at the organization. So there's also a part on the form where you can talk about your activities and how much you're spending in each of the activities. So you're not just talking about ooh these people made this much money, but you're going to be able to say, listen here, you know the work we said we do, that food bank that we run this is how much money we put into it. So when you are unclear about how you're spending money, when your finances on the back end, or your financial statements are just not in order, it makes it a lot harder to reflect those priorities. Click here to read the full transcript.
This season. I want you to get a better understanding of the return and how it fits into the foundational pieces for a healthy nonprofit.
Those pieces being your mission, your priorities, your tools and storytelling. Click here to read the full transcript.
This season is all about the IRS form 990, an informational return for nonprofits. I want you to have a better understanding of the return and how it fits into the foundational pieces for a healthy nonprofit. Those pieces being mission, priorities, tools and storytelling.
For that reason, this season is brought to you by my DIY 990 clinic, which will be on April 21st at 9am MT. This clinic is for those of you who want to plan on filing your own 990 but want access to a CPA while working on the form. It's also for you if you want to set aside 90 minutes to work on the form so that you can continue to do your work in the community. Be sure to check out the link in our transcripts to learn more. What is the IRS 990? It is an informational return telling the IRS what your organization is doing yet allows for standardization across nonprofits in general. The IRS 990 is due five months and 15 days after the year end. So if you have a December 31 year-end that means yours is going to be due May 15. You can definitely file an extension.

Something that I'm continuing to learn for myself, is you have to put it out there. If you have a nonprofit that you feel super overwhelmed with, one that you're like, "I don't even know if I should start this," start somewhere. Click here for the full transcript.
So here's part two about why your stories are important, and why the financials matter, and you should be looking at them. Click here for the full transcript.
We had a client who straight up lied to their board about the financials. So what happened was, they were not updating their financials, they were just like, "Yo, I know people paid us money. I think these numbers look good." And the board was just taking it. Click here to read the full transcript.
Today I want to talk with you about can a nonprofit make profit. Yes! While an organization might be called a nonprofit or a not for profit organization, it's not because you're not expecting to make any money. It's because that's not why you exist. Click here to read the full transcript.
This is another episode of me sharing a little bit more about tools that you can use. So a really good thing to have in place for your organizations are processes and procedures. This is important if something goes wrong. Click here to read the full transcript.
Today's episode is about my sharing some free tools that you can use to show your organization's impact. To read the full transcript, click here.
This is going to be another Q&A episode. This one was inspired by some questions I got from my purpose to platform sisters. One of the questions was, is there a list of questions you should ask yourself to decide on whether your new business should be a nonprofit or a for profit business? Click here for full transcript.
Your budget is not something you can throw together. That is what I see a lot is that either people are not putting enough thought into their budget or they're putting too much thought into their budget. So you need to be on a nice middle ground. Click here to read the full transcript.
You are special, your organization is special, your organization is different and even though there are organizations that are like you or similar to you, they are not you. So stop trying to fit their mold. Click here for the full transcript.
This is an FAQ session of questions that I typically get. I'll be providing answers to help your nonprofit thrive. Click here to view the entire transcript.
Some feel like, Oh my gosh, I can't talk to that organization or I can't share resources with that organization because we're going after the same donors. That is a lie. It is not a competition for donors. If you are clear about your mission, you don't need to compete with another organization for donors. To view the full transcript, click here.
Have you ever felt like you did not know where your organization was going, like you were completely on grounded, just like going through the motions, super overwhelmed and confused. It might be because you are not as clear about your mission as you could be. To view the full transcript, click here.
I decided to start this podcast because I want to help nonprofit leaders who feel overwhelmed. They're looking to reduce some of that anxiety around money and talk more about how they're making impact. And I wanted to show them the ways that they could do that. My goal is to reassure them that they are able to talk about their mission and they're able to talk about their priorities, their tools, and then they can tell their story.
