Christmas Characters 3. The Prophets - Looking forward to Immanuel Key Verses: Genesis 3:12-15, Galatians 4:4-7
What and When
Just like today, people at the first Christmas were not generally expecting their Messiah. Oh yes, there were a few (Like Simeon and Anna) but after 400 years of silence from the prophets most had lost sight of the promises and were not really anticipating their Messiah any time soon. How very like us today – we give lip-service to the teaching of the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus but live as if we don't expect Him any time soon.
In his great work – the Believer's Bible Commentary – William MacDonald lists 45 passages of Scripture from the Old Testament which are clearly said to be fulfilled in the New Testament by our Lord Jesus.
In a fuller treatment of the Old Testament Prophecies Rose Publishing lists 100 prophecies from over 120 scriptures which are fulfilled in the New Testament by Jesus. Last week Eric indicated that there may be as many as 300 prophecies fulfilled in the Lord Jesus.
Today we want to consider some of these significant predictions which may easily be overlooked as we celebrate Christmas:
The Seed of the Woman - (Genesis 3:15, Galatians 4:4, Isaiah 7:14, Matt. 1:21, Luke 1:34-35)
The Son Who was Given - (Isa. 9:6-7, Isa 53:4-6, Luke 2:11, 2 Cor. 9:15)
The Sign of the Times - (Daniel 9:24-26)
The Saviour Who is God - (Genesis 22:8, John 1:29, Isa. 43:3, Isa.45:21, Matt. 1:21)

According to Jesus the man who has tasted God's righteousness is to show mercy to others; he is to be pure in heart; and he is to be a peacemaker.
From the life and teaching of Jesus we uncover 4 steps that will help the child of God work for peace in any and every conflict:
Understanding the source of the conflict
Experiencing the peace of God in your Heart.
Following the example of the prince of Peace.
Working towards spreading the Peace of God.
When it comes to peace making, “the heart of the matter,
is that it is a matter of the heart.”
You need to be experiencing the peace of God in your heart,
and following Jesus' peacemaking example,
before you can start working towards spreading the peace of God in the hearts of others.

Behind every godly ACTIVITY
lies a spiritual SELF-IDENTITY.
Therefore, before you can faithfully perform spiritual ACTIVITIES,
you must first develop a spiritual SELF-IDENTITY,
that is made up of 3 essential QUALITIES:
SERVANTHOOD,
SISTER & BROTHERHOOD,
plus SLAVEHOOD.
I. SERVANTHOOD (Col.4:7-9) - faithfully undertaking small acts of loving service.
II. SISTERHOOD & BROTHERHOOD (Col. 4:10-11) - faithfully sticking by one another, and strengthening one another, through thick and thin.
III. SLAVEHOOD (Col. 4:12-13) - faithfully serving the Son of God and greeting one another, praying for one another, and working for one another.

Topic: How can I discuss same sex marriage with grace and truth?
Duration: 1.01.53
This is a great question!
And the answer is in the question!
What are your feelings about this issue?Discussion Ideals!- You are can, and probably should, have a conversation about this subject. And it is important that you do it well!
The topic of ‘same-sex marriage’ should be discussed within the greater story of God’s purposes in creation and redemption.
In any meaningful discussion it is important to have some ground rules.
Is there such a thing as ‘absolute truth’?There are 3 general viewpoints about ‘truth’.
God has the ultimate authority; and everyone submits to Him.
Key leaders have the authority; and everyone submits to them.
Everyone has equal authority; and everyone is tolerant and accepting each other’s viewpoint.
God’s Purpose and Truth!- Given an opportunity to discuss things from God’s perspective, try and start at the beginning of God’s purposes in creation and redemption.
Why did God create the universe? To reveal His glory, through His creation, in particular, human beings!
The ultimate reality is ‘personal relationships’, revealed through the Trinity.
Male and female are made in the ‘image of God’! We alone are able to know God, to reflect His glory and worship Him.
Marriage is the most significant ‘personal relationship’. It is God’s design, declaration and provision. We are made for completion and companionship.
Marriage is the foundation of family and society.
Sexual relationships can only be perfectly expressed within the context of male and female marriage.
But… creation also needs redemption! Truth Rejecters! 1. God is replaced: As human beings we have exchanged God for something else.
God’s response: God gives us what we want.
God’s judgment: our bodies act out sexually what our heart’s desire and worship – namely ourselves!
Romans 1:18-28
A. 1:23-24
Replacement: God’s glory is exchanged for idols (23)
Response: sinful desires leads to sexual impurity (24)
Judgment: Degrading of their bodies with one another (24)
B. 1:25-27
Replacement: God’s truth is exchanged for a lie = worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator (25)
Response: Experience shameful lusts (26)
Judgment: Homosexual behaviour (26b-27)
C. 1:28
Replacement: Removed the knowledge of God from their thinking (28)
Response: A depraved mind (28)
Judgment: do what ought not to be done (28)
Summary 1. The biggest and deepest problem in our lives is rebellious worship.
Our sexual disorders and dysfunctions are God’s judgment upon us.
Paul’s focus on homosexuality is because this clearly demonstrates our serious problem. Right and wrong worship is reflected in our sexuality!
The saving and healing of our every sinful soul, comes about when we return God to His rightful place and we return to worship and glorify Him in our hearts and lives.

Topic: How can I use my singleness to live for the kingdom of God?
Duration: 52.03
Myth #1
The good life begins when I get married.
God’s truth:
Single life is good because God is good.
Myth #2
Single life is too hard. Getting married will make life easier.
God’s truth:
Marriage is a gift but equally true, singleness is a gift from God.
Myth #3
Singleness is a time of transition of waiting until ‘real life’ begins when I get married.
God’s truth:
Singleness is a calling from Him for now.
Myth #4
It’s only when I’m married and have a partner that my life will have purpose and meaning.
God’s truth:
No one but our Lord Jesus Christ and devoting our lives to Him will bring purpose and meaning.
Myth #5
I’ll never be truly happy while I am single.
God’s truth:
The single life devoted to God is a happy life.
Myth #6
It’s better to marry a non-believer than to stay single for life.
God’s truth:
A believer is not to be yoked to an unbeliever.

Divorce and Remarriage Key Verses: Jeremiah 3:1-10
Document on website Towards a Biblical perspective on marriage, divorce and remarriage.
God's overall plan for people includes marriage.
Physical intimacy, by and itself does not constitute marriage - (Exodus 22:16-17)
God intends for marriage to be life long - Matt 19:4-6, 1 Cor 7:10-11
What God joined together, He commanded men not to separate.
Scripture permits but does nor encourage divorce - Deut 24:1-4, Mal 2:16, Jer 3:8, Eze 23:17-19, Hos 2:2, Matt 1:19, Matt 5:32, Matt 19:8-9, 1 Cor 7:13-15
In some cases God permits remarriage - Deut 24:1-4, Matt 5:32, Matt 19:9, 1 Cor 7:15, 1 Cor 7:27-28
Divorce severs the original marriage relationship, though the believer is exhorted to either seek reconciliation or else remain unmarried - Deut 24:1-4, John 4:16-18, 1 Cor 7:10-11, Deut 24:4
What about the "guilty" party? - Matt 5:32, Matt 19:9, John 8:10-11
God permits believers who have committed adultery to be restored to Church fellowship upon repentance - 2 Cor 2:5-11

Lessons from a Tree about a fulfilling year Key Verses: Psalms 1:1-6
This year will go one of two ways: - Blessed or Cursed
Better or Worse
Fulfilling or Disappointing
A Fulfilling Year is all about a RELATIONSHIP … not just rules
This year remember that living by rules outside the context of a divine loving relationship results in rebellion.
However, living by rules within the context of a divine loving relationship leads to personal renewal and real life.
The scriptural condition for enjoying a fulfilling year is to make a daily choice to walk closely with the Lord.
This daily choice will involve walking away from the world and walking in obedience to the world.
This year remember that: "The choices we don't make are as important as the ones we do make."

People Who Met Jesus 4 of 8
Jesus had travelled nearly 50 kms from His home area in Galilee to the region of Tyre on the Mediterranean coast in Phoenicia, (now Lebanon) a Syrian controlled area. It seems that Jesus had just wanted to get away quietly without the crowd. However, this woman had apparently heard of the fame of Jesus and His healing power. She was not about to let this opportunity pass without a very clear appeal for help for her daughter who was severely demon possessed. (Was this another case of Jesus being somewhere to meet the need of one person, like the Samaritan woman in John 4?

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her." — Lk 10:38-42
How to Read Your Bible The important thing about reading the Bible is to have a personal encounter with Jesus through: 1. Stopping - Switch off but don't Switch Out.
2. Seeking - Speak to me through Your Word. Read until you feed. Chew it Over. Today Jesus said to me …
3. Submitting - Trust and Obey.
4. Sticking with it - No Bible no Breakfast. (or no Social Media, no sleep, no …)
What is the most important thing when it comes to study the Bible? Information, Transformation or an Encounter?
The simple answer it to use "Biblical Information" as a spring board to enjoy a "Personal Encounter with God" that results in "Spiritual Transformation".

1 Knowing the key to eternal life
The standard is "God"
A Keep the Law
B Sell everything and give it away
Idolatry takes many forms
C Follow Jesus
We don't like to follow
It is an impossible requirement
2 Seeing the difficulties for anyone
The guy left and missed the answer
The eye of the needle is hyperbole
It means, it's impossible
Why?
Our sin, or deadness
3 Knowing the key to eternal life
All things are possible with God

Jesus is the creator, sustainer, supreme
Col 1:21
We are enemies of God
Col 2:13
We are dead in your sins
Col 1:22
Reconciled by Christ's death
Col 2:13-15
Good made you alive with Christ

Being Filled With The Holy Spirit In order to understand the important principle of "being filled with the Holy Spirit" every believer must be able to answer 6 simple yet insightful questions:
I. WHO ought to be filled with the Holy Spirit? (Ephesians 5:18 ESV)
II. WHEN should we be filled with the Holy Spirit? (Galatians 5:17 ESV)
II. WHY do we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit? (Galatians 5:16 ESV)
a. Because the Scriptures command it
b. Because victory over the flesh requires it
IV. WHAT does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? (Acts 4:7-13 ESV)
V. How are we to be filled with the Holy Spirit? (1 John 1:12-16; 2 Corinthians 3:18)
a. Foundational PRINCIPLE-we must meet certain conditions
b. Relational PERSPECTIVE - Active passivity
c. Spiritual PROCESS
Know & Obey God's Word (Col. 3:16-17)
Yield yourself to God (Rom. 6:13, 16, 19; 12:1)
Confess & forsake sim (1 John 1:5-9, Prov. 28
VI. WHAT are the results of being filled with the Holy Spirit? (Ephesians 5:18-21 ESV)
Fellowshiping (Horizontal)
Worshiping (Vertical)
Thanksgiving (Vertical)
Submitting (Horizontal)
Being 'filled' with the Holy Spirit.. or being 'empowered'…ought to be the 'normal' and 'continual' experience of every believer. The key to being filled with the Holy Spirit is to be completely 'occupied' by Christ and totally 'engaged' with Christ.

Praying For Our Church Introduction As we get into action this coming year may we as a church pray for one another and for the church as a whole. In order to decide what we should pray I've looked at the prayers of the Apostle Paul for the churches to whom he had written and also his letters to individuals. To some he does not start with prayer. But to this he does he almost always starts with thanksgiving so that's a good starting point for us.

To Adam he said,“Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. Introduction We live in a post-Christian era and there is a great deal of anti-Christian influence all around us. Often to name the Name of the Lord Jesus is to invite scorn or ridicule. John's comment that "the whole world is under the control of the evil one" 1 John 5:19, is so obvious to those who read the Bible and watch the daily news. As we discuss this topic it is vital that we know and understand who Christ really is and that we know Him personally as our Lord and Saviour. Otherwise we can easily be deceived into dethroning Him from the position He has held from all eternity past to all eternity future.

The Twelve Apostles 1. Simon Peter Denied the Lord 3 times. Not at the Cross
He was restored to the Lord.
He became the great Apostle Peter.
He first preached the Gospel to both Jew and Gentile.
He wrote two books in our Bible.
He was crucified in Rome.
Andrew, Peter's brother Ran away. Not at the cross.
Restored to the Lord after the resurrection
He had introduced Peter to Jesus
He was a quiet disciple/helper
He preached in Jerusalem
He was crucified for his faith
James son of Zebedee Ran away. Not at the cross.
Restored to the Lord.
John's brother and a leader in the early church.
Killed by the wicked King Herod, Acts 12 (The first of the Disciples to die for Jesus)
John, brother of James Ran away but came back to the Cross. (The only disciple to stay with Jesus)
Known as the disciple whom Jesus loved
Given responsibility for Mary by Jesus
Prominent with Peter in the early church
Preached through Greece and Asia
Persecuted but lived to a ripe old age
Possibly the only disciple NOT to die for his faith
Wrote the Gospel, letters of John and the Revelation
Philip Ran away. Not at the cross
Restored to the Lord
In the upper room with the other disciples
Tradition says he died for his faith
Bartholomew (Nathaniel) Ran away. Not at the cross
Restored to the Lord
With the disciples after the resurrection
Probably died for his faith
Thomas Ran away – Not at the cross
Known as doubting Thomas
Restored to the Lord
Became a great preacher of the Gospel
Missionary to India
Killed in Madras India
Matthew Ran away. Not at the cross
Restored to the Lord
He had left his lucrative occupation to follow Jesus
He had introduced his friends to Jesus by giving them a feast in his home
He later wrote the Gospel of Matthew
Many are the stories of Matthew's missionary work in Persia, India and Ethiopia, but these are at best supposition
James son of Alphaeus (the little or less) Ran away. Not at the cross
Restored to the Lord
With the eleven in Acts chapter 1
Probably a brother of Matthew
Little is known thereafter
Thaddaeus (Or Judas son of James) Ran away. Not at the cross.
Restored to the Lord
With the apostles in Acts
Wrote the Letter of Jude
Tradition says that he preached in Armenia and died as a Martyr in Syria
Simon the Zealot Ran away. Not at the cross
Restored to the Lord
With the apostles in Acts
Had been zealous for his religion and his nation
Never lost this “nickname” as he was zealous for his new Master, and died for his faith
Judas Iscariot
Betrayed the Lord – not at the cross. - Never restored
When he saw that Jesus was sentenced to death he committed suicide
If he had come to the cross Jesus would have forgiven him for He called Judas friend knowing that he would betray him
THE LESSON FOR US TODAY. - Jesus died for the sins of the world
Jesus died for my sins
Jesus will forgive and restore all who come to Him
As our Lord and Saviour He will take up our lives and use them for His purpose and glory. Then He will use them for the blessing of others, maybe millions.
Come to the cross – find Him there – not on the cross
But at the cross, risen, glorified and waiting to save.

The application to us today...
We are slaves to sin and in bondage to Satan by nature. The judgement of God on our sin is certain so we too need a substitute.
That's why God sent Jesus to be "the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Jesus has died instead of us.
“The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” when we believe in Jesus.
We are safe from judgement when we turn from sin and accept Jesus as our Saviour and Lord.

Key Verses: Acts 2:41-42 - NIV
**“Those who accepted his message were baptised…
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and…”**
The apostles' teaching is: 1. Grounded in the Old Testament scriptures. - Peter quotes: Joel 2, (verse 17 – 21), Psalm 16, (verse 25 – 28)
Stephen quotes: Amos and Isaiah in Acts 7.
Philip quotes Isaiah 53 in Acts 8.
Paul quotes several OT writers in Acts 13.
James quotes Amos in Acts 15.
A continuation of the teachings of our Lord.
Acts 1:1- 7. What Dr Luke began in the Gospel he continues in the book of Acts. (see Luke 24:25-27, 44-49)
We may add that every teaching of the Lord Jesus in the four Gospels is restated or expanded in the Epistles.
In harmony with all the scriptures. (The New is in the Old contained, The Old is by the New explained)
To establish a doctrine/teaching we need to take in the whole Word of God.
The Trinity is seen in Genesis, Isaiah, the gospels, the Acts and the Epistles.
Jesus explained in all the scriptures the things about Himself, Lk 24:27
Jesus said search the Scriptures for they testify of ME, Jn 5:39
The prophecies, types and foreshadows in the OT are fulfilled in the NT.
Consistent with each other, e.g. Peter, Paul and John.
Peter was the first to preach the Gospel to the Jews and to the Gentiles.
This Gospel was about the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
It involved repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.
It brought forgiveness of sins and peace with God.
It was followed by water baptism for those who believed.
What Peter and John preached in Acts 4 and Acts 8 Paul preached later.
Paul received by divine revelation the same Gospel, Gal. 1 & 2
This was confirmed by Peter, Gal.2:7-9
This is clearly set out by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 and in Romans.
Based on the Gospel of the grace of God.
John the Baptist preached repentance and pointed to Jesus.
Jesus preached repentance and faith in Him.
Peter, John, Stephen, Philip and Paul all preached repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus.
There was no other Name, no other way. John 14:6, Acts 4:12
It confirmed the Cross, the shed Blood, the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus as essential for our salvation.
It demonstrated that all have sinned and are lost and that the Gospel is our only hope.
It tells us that Jesus died for the sin of all and that all may believe and be saved.
It assures us of the Love of God for all mankind.
The foundation of all righteousness.
It reveals the righteousness of God which comes by faith.
This is applied to all who believe in Jesus.
It teaches us to deny ungodliness and live holy lives.
It is consistent with the teaching of the Old Testament.
The embodiment of all truth.
Jesus Himself is the embodiment of Truth.
The apostles based all their teaching on their experience of Christ. John,* 1 John 1:1- 5, Peter, 2 Peter 1:16-21, Paul,* 1 Corinthians 15:1-8.
God gave divine revelation to Peter (Acts 10) and to Paul, (Eph. 3:1-6)
The truth of the Gospel.
The truth of the Church which is His Body.
The Truth of the Local Church.
The truth of future events in the plan and purposes of God.
The truth of our eternal hope.
The truth of eternal condemnation for all who reject Christ.

Introduction What does the Bible say about Missionary work? 1. The Bible reveals God as a missionary God, therefore the Bible is a missionary book.
The Bible reveals Jesus as a missionary Person, ever seeking and saving the Lost.
The Apostles were all missionaries and most laid down their lives for the Lord.
The commission of our Lord to His followers was a missionary message.
The practise of the early church.
The teaching of the apostles in the Epistles has a missionary focus.
The history of the true church of the Lord Jesus has been to go to all nations.
What has been the motivation of the followers of the Lord Jesus to become missionaries? 1. Obedience to their Lord and Saviour.
Someone said that the rationale for Missionary work may be summed up in the following: - The Command from above. - "Go into all the world."
The Cry from beneath. - "Send him to my father's house."
The Call from afar. "Come over to Macedonia and helps us." Acts 16:9
The Compassion from within. "When He saw him had compassion"

Key Verses: Mark 12:28-34 (ESV)
Before someone can enter the kingdom of God they often need answers to significant questions:
What keeps me outside the kingdom of God?
Why can't I earn my way into the kingdom of God?
What has God done so I can enter the kingdom of God?
What must I do to enter the kingdom of God?
Every person needs to understand that it is possible to be a Christian in a religious sense yet still be far from having a personal relationship with Christ.
The only way to enter the Kingdom of God is to trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.
This means turning from trusting in your good works to depending fully upon Jesus death and resurrection to save you from your sin.

Winning Spiritual Warfare 3 Points: Avoid sin
Balanced living
Christocentric Life
Choosing to sin or persisting in sin isn't just losing, it;s the same as being a traitor. Psalm 19:13 - NIV
The Challenge:
Is there any legitimate (not sinful) activity or substance which you would have difficulty giving up, right now, for 1 week? The question is not "why should I?", but "can I?"
You will not last long-term in Spiritual Warfare if you don't manage your lifestyle. (Mark 12:30 - NIV)

In order to stand firm amidst the afflictions of Satan every believer must understand three crucial concepts:
What Satan can't do to afflict Believers.
What Satan can do to afflict Believers.
What Believers must do when being afflicted by Satan.
Every believer will experience God’s protection in Spiritual Warfare if they stand upon God’s supernatural provisions and submit to God’s divine instruction.
Every believer will stand firm amidst the afflictions of Satan if they take up the shield of faith by reckoning what God says to be true.
We can take up the shield of faith by

meditating on God's character,
holding on to God's promises.

The Existence of Spiritual Warfare
The Holy Alliance of Spiritual Warfare
What is the key to victory in Spiritual Warfare? “You cannot fight supernatural battles the natural way. Spiritual Warfare must be fought the spiritual way. And the spiritual way is the Scriptural way.”
From Ephesians 6:10-13 believers learn that there are two basic keys for experiencing God's PROTECTION in Spiritual Warfare:
A. Supernatural POWER
B. PROTECTIVE Armour
C. the PROMISE of Victory
A. Supernatural POWER. (Ephesians 6:10) - Access POWER through the Holy Spirit.
B. PROTECTIVE armour. (Ephesians 6:11) - Armour is Christ, being clothed in Christ.
C. the PROMISE of Victory (James 4:7)
Every believer will experience God’s protection in Spiritual Warfare if they stand upon God’s supernatural provision
B. Put on God's PROTECTIVE armour. - Disciplined Dependence
Step 1: Reclaim lost ground through repenting of their sins
Step 2: Resist counterattacks by removing temptation triggers
Step 3: Rearm by putting on Christ through practicing Spiritual Discipline
Every believer will experience God’s protection in Spiritual Warfare if they stand upon God’s supernatural provision and submit to God’s divine instruction.

The Gospel is bad news because it tells us that we are lost and separated from God forever, without hope and with despair in our future. (Luke 19:10)
The Gospel is better news because it says that God loves us and wants us to be saved, but how can this be because we have all sinned and offended God? (Romans 5:6-11)
The Gospel is the best news because Jesus took our place, died for our sins and God will now forgive all who come to Him through the Lord Jesus. (John 3:36)
The truth of the Gospel includes the lost state of all mankind, the love, mercy and grace of God, the atoning sacrifice (propitiation) of the Lord Jesus and the call to all to repentance and faith in Christ.

23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talentsb was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26 “The servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii.c He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’
30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

John 10:11-21 (New International Version)
11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."
19At these words the Jews were again divided. 20Many of them said, "He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?"
21But others said, "These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"

2. God is right to judge because:a. He meets and sets the criteria.b. He is impartial. (Rom 2:11, Duet 10:17)c. He knows all our secrets.
3. Where does that leave us?Group A (v7,10) Is this you?Persevere in doing good, seek for glory, honour and immortality. The Reward is: Eternal life, glory, honour and peace.
Group B (v5, 8-9) Is this you?Have a stubborn or unrepentant  heart, are self-seeking, reject the truth, obey unrighteousness. The Reward is: Wrath, judgement, indignation, tribulation, distress

Roman 1:18-32
Last week we considered Paul's reason for writing to the Church of Rome. This was all to do with the good news which we call THE GOSPEL. Paul was not ashamed of this gospel because it had changed him from being a self centred, bigoted, Christ-hating Jew into a Christian who loved the Lord and was passionate about the GOSPEL message which he once tried to destroy.
We also asked the question "What is this Gospel"? and saw that it was God's power for the salvation of all who believed in Jesus. It is the method God uses 'God's master plan' to save us from sin and give us the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
God's righteous anger or wrath against all sin. (Romans 1:18-32)
It's against all sin, godlessness, and wickedness. (v18)
Those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. (v18)
God makes some things plain to us through creation. (v19-20)
Men are without excuse. (v20)
They knew God but ....(v21-22)
They neither glorified Him as God...
Nor gave thanks to Him.
The result was twofold:
The polution of the mind and
Idolatry
The awful result (v24-32) 3 times we read that God gave them over (v24, 26 & 28)
Sexual impurity and homosexuality was the result. This used to called Sodomy (Gen 19)
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie.
Worshipped things created rather than the Creator.

Romans 1:1-17
There are so many questions which are answered by this wonderful GOSPEL that Ken addresses. These are (adopted from William MacDonald)
What is this Gospel? (1:1-17)
Why do people need this Gospel? (1:18-3:20)
How can the Gospel make godless sinners right with a holy God? (3:21-31)
Does this Gospel agree with the Old Testament Scriptures? (4:1-25)
What are the benefits this Gospel brings in the believer's life? (5:1-21)
Does this Gospel teach, permit or encourage sinful living? (6:1-23)
What is the relationship of the Christian to the old law of Moses? (7:1-25)
How does the Gospel enable the believer to live a holy life? (8:1-39)
Has God broken His promises to His earthly people, the Jews? (9:1-11:36)
How should we live since the Gospel has changed our lives? (12:1-16:27)

Ken suggests FOUR areas of the "Eternal" on which to focus in order to gain a secure perspective for the coming year (2009).
The Foundation of our Faith. Jesus Christ the Rock - 1 Cor 3:11
The Assurance of our Faith. The Bible, God's Word - 2 Tim 3:15
The Reliance of our Faith. The Promises of God - 2 Peter 1:4,1. 1 Peter 1:3-5. 1 Peter 5:7. Hebrews 13:5-6. John 14:1-3, v16, v27. Isaiah 26. Psalm 55:22.
The Fellowship of our Faith. Daily comfort and strength from His Holy Spirit - John 14:23-27. Romans 8:16, 28, 35-39. 2 Cor 1:3-4. Rom 5:5.
So in times like these in 2009 you need an "anchor of the soul, firm and secure", read Hebrews 6:19 in order to get through the year with peace and hope.
