October is also an unusually busy month with things happening not only in events, but in the news. Find 2 events at Malone that just recently popped up, information about a TV show documentary, word on an on-going display, tours in Simi Valley, and a class at the Newberry.
This is a couple of extremely busy months this year. Between the two months pretty much every Laura homesite has had an event.
There are a lot of Laura events every July. There are events scheduled this month in Pepin, WI; Walnut Grove, MN; De Smet, SD;Mansfield, MO; Malone, NY; Old World Wisconsin, Eagle, WI; Simi Valley, CA.Dean Butler's "Prairie Man" has rolled out.
A roving report to what happened in Burr Oak, Iowa during Laura Days. This year the event was June 22, 2024. Get a report on what changes they'd made since my trip in 2019. Get a report on a new place to eat - Mabe's Pizza. Get a report on where I stayed and learn about a new untitled documentary in the works.
A group of friends went to the big 50th anniversary cast reunion site tour for "Little House on the Prairie." Scott Smith and Micky Thompson went on a friends trip to one of the major events of the year in Simi Valley, California where most of the TV show exteriors were shot. Listen to Scott and Micky's report on what it was like to attend and visit both indoors and outdoor sets and meet the actors at one of the two biggest reunions of actors scheduled for all year. They urge you to attend and got for the upper price tickets if you can whether they have another reunion in Simi Valley or at one of the other events. They had a great time. Today I'm going to be doing a reading from my favorite of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. An early major plot point in the book the Yankee uses an eclipse to get out of being held hostage and to gain power in the court.
I have two programs in April and there is a lot of stuff going on. There is another production of Little House on the Prairie: The Musical. There are two cast reunion events and Malone is starting a new event.
In honor of Read Across America we're going to get another story from Thornton Burgess. His stories were originally published in magazines and in most of them they set up the next chapter. This particular one those is short stories. We're going to start with "Mr. Toad's Old Suit."
March is the start of the year’s Laura Ingalls Wilder season. It’s still pretty quiet. However, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Home and Museum in Mansfield, Missouri is the first of the Laura homesites that close for the season to reopen each year. Walnut Grove and De Smet are both at least partially open all year, but with Mansfield’s opening it means that the Laura Ingalls Wilder season has officially begun!We've got an event in Burr Oak and a production of Little House on the Prairie: The Musical. This month will also be the long awaited 50th Anniversary event in Simi Valley.
My friend Kelly Pelzel and I headed down to Mansfield, Missouri for Wilder Days. We didn't get a roving report done at the time. We set up a time to record it and..... February in Laura's birthday month so for a winter month we get a lot of action this month. A lot of it is online so you can participate. We'll have an online birthday party on this podcast and there will be one for the Walnut Gove Pageant where they celebrate with people who played Nellie in the pageant over the years.
January has an astonishing number of family dates. There are annual meetings for members in both Burr Oak, IA (Zoom link available for members) and Malone, NY. There basically weren't any Laura Christmas plays in production in December, but January is making up for it with 2 Little House on the Prairie: The Musical productions. 2024 is the 50th Anniversary of the Little House on the Prairie, the NBC TV series. Expect all sorts of events in its honor this year and they are starting to roll out.
December is not the busiest Laura month, but it does have several events restart with a Christmas theme. We have events in De Smet, SD; Spring Valley, MN; Mansfield, MO and a cast event. There are also events coming up with Trundlebed Tales and I am looking for your input for several questions.
Josh Gates, host of Destination Truth and Expedition Unknown and Josh Gates Tonight plus other Discovery channel shows, gives in person speeches and tours around the country. His current show is called AN EVENING OF LEGENDS, MYSTERIES, AND TALES OF ADVENTURE. It covers his time during the pandemic when Josh Gates Tonight gave us something of a lifeline. It tells about how he got the job he has now. He looks into how do science and the supernatural intercect. What's it like to attend one of his shows? Listen up and I'll tell you.
We have events this time from The Newberry in Chicago, online with the Laura Ingalls Wilder Legacy and Research Association, Mansfield, MO, Cast Reunions at Non-Homesite Towns of More than 3 Cast Members, and looking ahead to Little House on the Prairie: The Musical.
This month two homesites are having their big Laura Ingalls Wilder event; Pepin WI and Mansfield MO. There is a smaller event in Malone/Burke NY. The larger fan events for the TV show have started up again.

My friend Kelly Pelzel and I took an quick trip up to Walnut Grove to see the new pageant in July. After 45 years they have changed their pageant. They are taking the story and dividing it into three parts. The first one will have the most of the original pageant so they started with what will be the second of the trilogy. It’s called Chasing the Dream, 1875-1876. We also took a little time to hit some of the other places in town. This was Kelly's first trip to Walnut Grove. It wasn't a complete trip, but we saw a lot including getting in a good visit with William T. Anderson and Cindy Wilson.
August is growing as Laura Ingalls Wilder event month. Look for events in Pepin, WI: De Smet, SD; Spring Valley, MN; Malone/Burke, NY; and NBC Little House on the Prairie TV reunion events.
July is one of the biggest Laura Ingalls Wilder event months. We're going to look ahead to events to Pepin, WI; Independence, KS; Walnut Grove, MN; De Smet, SD; Mansfield, MO; Malone, NY; Burke, NY; Old World Wisconsin; Eagle, WI; Nelson Pioneer Farm; Oskaloosa, IA; Project Archeology; and the Wilder Podcast.
June brings us into Summer and it's a big Laura month. Every year I do some reading in honor of World Read Aloud Day. It's every March 2nd in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Sometimes I do something Laura specific, but lately I've been doing Mother West Wind's Children by Thorton W. Burgess. For awhile I was doing short episodes as I tested various microphones, but today's is going to be my standard equipment. Learn more about Burgess and find a list of links to the other stories. Laura Ingalls Wilder season is really getting started. The Laura Ingalls Wilder sites that haven't opened yet for the season will open at the end of May. There is an event in Pepin and a fundraiser in Burr Oak. There is a Laura Ingalls Wilder Legacy and Research Association homesite updates online program about what's happening with the homesites this year. It's Missouri Cherry Blossom Festival and 3 more events with "Little House on the Prairie" TV show cast members that are close to Iowa. There is even an event at the Gene Autry Museum of the West. March is the month when the museums that closed down for the winter start to reopen. We have several events and a couple pieces of news.
I know what it means to miss New Orleans.... or rather I don't. I've never been there, but it's one of my friend Kelly Pezel's favorite places to visit. She's going to join me so we can learn about what to visit in New Orleans, how and why. Tracy Vozar is going to call in, too. Tracy is going to talk about going to the Big Easy for Mardi Gras and how you can actually participate in a Mardi Gras parade.

In 2019 I was driving down to Mansfield, Missouri for their Wilder Days event. I was going to be traveling by myself I decided to swing over to Marceline, MO on my way down.

This is the last day of my Walnut Grove trip. I visit the dugout site and get two nasty surprises. Then I have a happy surprise at the museum. Finally, I drive home and talk about videos you can look for.
This is the second day of my trip. I hit several places I hadn't made yesterday. I do my In the Kitchen With Laura (Pioneer Version) and check out the rest of the Family Festival. I visit the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum in Tracy, Minnesota. Then I end the night with "Fragments of a Dream" the Walnut Grove pageant.

What happened in Laura Ingalls Wilder fandom during 2021? There were fewer things cancelled than in 2021, but some things were changed how they were set up. Some things were canceled. For example, Pepin Days in Laura was scheduled, canceled, and re-scheduled over the course of the year. I hope in the coming year there will be a lot more Laura events.

Wendi Lou Lee joins host Sarah Uthoff to talk about her experiences being involved with the "Little House on the Prairie" NBC TV show. Lee was one of a set of twins who played Baby Grace. The real life Grace was, of course, awesomesauce because she was born in Iowa and attended a normal school. So we're looking forward to hearing Lee's take on the TV show. Lee has also written A Prairie Devotional. She'll share with us about all of it.
Karen Grassle joins host Sarah Uthoff to talk about her new memoir, Bright Lights, Prairie Dust. Grassle, of course, played Laura Ingalls Wilder's Ma on the 1970s NBC series, We're going to talk about her experience on "Little House." We'll dig into what it was like to film the series. Then we'll discuss her life beyond as a theater actress and a woman's right advocate. You're going to want a copy of her new book.

What happened in Laura Ingalls Wilder fandom during 2020? It was Carrie Ingalls 150th birthday so lots of things were planned, but with COVID almost all of them were canceled. Laura people became another kind of pioneer, a digital kind. Two of three pageants created digital content and Alison Arngrim (Nellie Olsen) went online by reading to us. Then the "American Masters - Laura Ingalls Wilder: From Prairie to Page" debuted and set off another round of online discussion. Come along and tell us all about it.

After that we'll check in on the online activities this summer especially the online pageant episodes in De Smet, SD and Mansfield, MO.

Today we're going to celebrate World Read Aloud Day by reading part of Mother West Wind's Children by Thornton W. Burgess. We're picking up from our 10 minute episodes last year where we were testing microphones. This time our story is "Why Peter's Ears Are Long."
There was a lot going on during 2019. There were a lot of things going on. The "Little House on the Prairie" Cast Reunion and the Laura Ingalls Wilder conference lead the list on my social media of what people thought were the biggest events. We also have things going on with "American Masters," "Little House on the Prairie: The Musical," and lots of stuff at the homesites. Check out what happened.
I finally got 5 of the 6 people from our trip together to interview about our last trip. Chime in as my mom, my brother, my niece and nephew, and me talk about our trip to Walt Disney World during late January 2019. We talk about where we stayed and our time at the park, our favorites, and what we learned. We stayed at Pop Century, visited all four parks and Disney Springs, and had the DVC tour.

Wilder Days is a big Laura event that includes special speakers, music, a crafts show, a pageant showing, etc. The Wilder dinner is a newer event and includes a special guest speaker who is then available for signing. This year the special guest was Alison Arngrim aka Nellie Oleson on "The Little House on the Prairie" NBC TV show. Another fairly recent additional to the program is a fiddle festival that is quickly developing a regional reputation for a high quality event.

We'll examine how agriculture has helped the country through the fulfillment of the Homestead Act, what Wheat Culture was down to what variety Pa and Almanzo would have grown, and how agriculture changed between the late 19th century and the 1910s and 1920s when the Wilder farm Rocky Ridge was thriving.

I missed the read aloud event this year (grump technical issues), but I still wanted to honor it and I thought it would be a great episode to get back up to speed. Burgess was a naturalist who wrote a column for children about wildlife. His stories were about humanized wild animals. They wear clothes and talk, but otherwise act as the real animals do. His stories were set in the Green Meadows and the Green Forest. Since they were originally written in a column each chapter begins with a recap and ends on a cliff hanger. They are perfect early reader (around 2nd grade) books. This one is The Adventures of Grandfather Frog.

Our first straight Travel Times in awhile we'll look at taking a trip to Springfield, Illinois. Without a master plan to, our family seems to end up in Springfield, Illinois every few years since I was about 8 years old. Even with all these trips we still haven't seen everything there is to see. Springfield is unique. Besides being the headquarters of all things Abraham Lincoln, it is also the site of a major Frank Lloyd Wright house, lots of government related sites, the Illinois State Fair grounds, and plenty of stuff for Route 66. Figure out what you should see in Springfield or call in with your own tricks and tips.

Dean Butler is known the world over as Almanzo Wilder from the NBC TV series Little House on the Prairie. Although he has moved on to other things, he has generously continued to be a supporter of Little House fandom appearing at homesites, events, and even conferences about Laura Ingalls Wilder. He also produced two documentaries on the Wilder family and a series of extras for one of the DVD releases.
Butler last appeared on our show in 2014 in honor of the TV show's 40th anniversary event in Walnut Grove MN. This time he'll be talking about the second De Smet Event being held during July 2017. Both he and Alison Arngrim (TV's Nellie Oleson) will be speaking and signing autographs at the event. We've checked in with site director Tessa Flak and now we'll get more word on what to look forward to with Dean.
Earlier this month a group of extended family loaded up the rented van and headed west (well first a little east and north, but mostly west). We hit several stops along the way including the Spam Museum, the Jolly Green Giant, the Laura Ingalls Wilder stops in De Smet SD, and Wall Drug (a hidden Laura site). Finally we pulled into Keystone - long time home of Carrie Ingalls Swanzey and short time home of Mary Ingalls. First things being first we visited the Keystone Area Historical Society where they have been making some big changes. I crossed off the 20 year goal of riding the 1880 train, hit Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. The next day we panned for gold before heading east, made a quick stop in Rapid City, and then checked out the Corn Palace. Finally we made it home.
I'll run you through what we actually did, what we were sorry we had to skip, and some great restaurants where we ate.

We'll revisit some of the classic tourist sites and check out some new ones. At the junction of three states (Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa), Dubuque has an impressive collection of firsts being the first city founded in Iowa. It is also in the midst of a period of renovation and growth. Much of that growth is in the Port Authority in a curve of the Mississippi River. William T. Anderson is the foremost Laura Ingalls Wilder authority. Wilder was a pioneer and author of the famous "Little House" book series. Anderson has written many books, booklets, and articles on both Wilder and on other historic topics. Anderson' most recent project was collecting and editing the notable letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder. This will be the last maor collection of previously unpublished Laura writings. How to get the most out of visit to Old Threshers. Never been to Midwest Old Threshers before or wanting to have a new experience during your trip, then check into our touring plan. Midwest Old Threshers in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa is probably the second biggest event in Iowa after the Iowa State Fair. It draws a large number of regular attendees from three states and has a large number of people who, just like Iowa State Fair, camp out and stay all week. It can be a confusing place with groups from the theater museum to steam engines to trains to trolleys to horses to a western town to a log cabin village to a doll collection. So learn what there is to see.

In honor of April being Poetry Month and April 18, 2015 being the 240th Anniversary of Paul Revere's famous ride, tonight's special episode features both some information about the ride and an elecution style delivery of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem "Paul Revere's Ride" as taken from the longer "Tales of a Wayside Inn." Laura Ingalls Wilder fans will enjoy hearing an elecution style delivery like Laura's teacher William Reed taught her in Burr Oak, Iowa which is believed to have helped influence her later writing style.

Alex has conducted research in the Midwest and Plains for 35 years. Her second book entitled Iowa's Archaeological Past, was published by the University of Iowa Press, 2000. Her particular interests include the late prehistoric cultures of the Plains and Midwest, archaeological manifestations of culture contact, fish bone analysis, and public education in archaeology.

She married into a long time Iowa City family and spent time her the family home that is still standing in Iowa City. She strengthened her ties by creating the Samuel Kirkwood statue that today stands in the U.S. Capitol and duplicate of which after leaving it’s long term home at the Old Capitol in Iowa City, moved to the community college named in his honor. Today her Samuel Kirkwood statue looks down from the center of the college’s new roundabout. She even has a town in Oklahoma named in her honor. Join us to discuss this fascinating artist.
