A podcast brought to you by Sweden’s largest independent dance institution. Your chance to hear from dance artists, engage with movement, and delve deeper into our creative process.
Panel discussion recorded on 13 June 2026 at Malmö Konsthall as part of Malmö City’s Democracy Week, ‘Malmö möts’. In 2025, choreographer Philippe Blanchard, dramaturge Maika Knoblich, and Skånes Dansteater initiated an ongoing inquiry into how the Performing Arts Society might assume a more active, accountable role in addressing the current ecological crisis.
In a time when the climate emergency is accelerating, our questioning moves beyond emissions data and toward a critical reflection on the ethical dimensions of our methodologies, the infrastructures that sustain them, and the symbolic economies in which they circulate. In this context, we are developing a dance work that draws on Édouard Glissant's philosophical concept of opacity. In our research, we ask: Can we imagine artistic practices that embody this ethics of opacity—practices that do not seek to extract or explain, but to relate, resonate, and respond?
In our panel, we want to enter a discussion and think together about what art can communicate and provide during times of crisis that other disciplines may not.

In this special episode, dance archivist Celine Orman talks with Professor Susan Kozel to explore the intersections of dance, philosophy and digital technologies. Susan’s research in phenomenology, somatics, and responsive technologies has influenced archival practices, including Skånes Dansteater’s project Bevara Rörelse (Maintaining Movement).
The conversation delves into the unique ways bodies think and sense, reflecting on themes of perception, attention, and human experience in a rapidly changing digital world. Susan shares insights from her extensive work, including collaborations with artists worldwide.
From her perspective as an professor and former dancer she explains how dance is more than an art form, but also as a vital way of knowing, being and understanding what it means to be human.

Between 2010 and 2019, Ben Wright choreographed over eight original works with us and served as Associate Artistic Director from 2014 to 2017, collaborating closely with former CEO and Artistic Director Åsa Soderberg.
He is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking production The Feeling of Going, a large-scale pop-opera-dance-theatre piece built around Jónsi’s album Go.
As part of our 30th anniversary, we revisit Ben’s time at Skånes Dansteater and reflect on his wide-ranging career.
Ben also shares thoughts on navigating transitions, letting go to allow for transformation, and exploring life’s essentials—love, death, and change. He emphasizes staying connected to the inner child, living with joy and compassion, and building trust through connection in his art, guided by kindness and empathy.

Patrick King, Skånes Dansteater’s first Artistic Director, and his partner Johan King Silverhult, one of the ensemble’s dancers during its early years, are still active as choreographers, dancers, and now Artistic Directors of Salon K Privé.
As part of Skånes Dansteater’s 30th anniversary, we revisit the birth of an independent dance institution. Patrick King set the tone for the company’s new beginning with his work "XXX Close Up", where a cast of seasoned dancers from Malmöbaletten met newly recruited talents in a physically demanding piece.
Hear Patrick and Johan not only recall the early years of Skånes Dansteater’s history, but also reflect on their broader dance careers: Patrick's experience of being a Black dancer in 1970s New York, performing in legendary productions such as "Fame" and Cirque du Soleil, living with elegance and dignity, and much more.

For Ludvig Daae, this dream of transforming everyday experiences into something different and elevated is a central part of creating art.
In 'Attempting Alchemy' he searches for utopia. He wants to transform ordinary movements, themes and objects into beauty, magic and gold.

'Aniara' is a performance that mixes dance and theatre. It is based on the book of the same name by Swedish author and Nobel Prize winner Harry Martinson.
In 'Aniara', the Earth is called Doris and it is being destroyed by the way people live their lives. Those who can now flee the planet Doris. Aniara is the name of one of the spaceships traveling back and forth from Doris to the refugees' new home planet, Tundrakloten. During one of these trips 'Aniara' collides with a smaller planet and starts to drift.
'Aniara' is a co-production between Skånes Dansteater and Moomsteatern.

'Indigo Flamingo' is a party like no other, an immersive dreamlike clubland celebrating two Malmö communities: LGBTQ+ and dance. A collaboration with Malmö Pride and DJ Qarl Qunt.
'Indigo Flamingo' is a celebration of community, and the audience is invited to become part of the story in this two-hour interactive show, inspired by Malmö’s queer people and places, past and present. They can take to the dancefloor or simply soak up the atmosphere of the fabulous indigo-tinted world of lost memories and hidden surprises.

Dance artist and somatic practitioner Gaetano Badalamenti joins host Samuel Denton for an insightful conversation about his practice.
Gaetano offers a wide range of holistic and body-based practices through his company Healing Movements. With his work he facilitates and space-holds for people in the process of self-discovery and healing. By fostering self-awareness and empowerment he helps them gain control and understanding of their own bodies in its entirety so prevent dis-ease and support them in finding a vibrant way of being human.

Choreographers Lava Markusson and Michael Tang join host Tiemen Stemerding for a conversation about their Malmö based dance company Bobbi Lo Produktion. Bobbi Lo Produktion creates engaging and immersive performances for children and youth. Lava and Michael share their empowering approach to their work with children. Internationally acclaimed Swedish choreographer Örjan Andersson sits down with host Tiemen Stemerding on the day before the premiere of the re-staging of Mozart’s Requiem. A collaboration between Skånes Dansteater, Malmö Opera Chorus and Malmö Opera Orchestra performing with over 50 people on Malmö Opera’s big stage. The work originally premiered in 2019, with Tiemen as one of the dancers.
They uncover Örjan’s creative processes and talk about the strong relationship between music and dance. About form, rhythm and flow. Örjan shares his experience of staging large scale works involving dancers, musicians, and actors. He also talks about the will to create work that communicate with the audience.

Finnish choreographer Johanna Nuutinen joins host Samuel Denton for a conversation about revisiting the piece ‘Zero-Zero’ with a new cast. What is it like for her to be confronted with something she previously made? Is it an opportunity to relive, reconsider and revise original intentions?
Johanna also shares memorable moments from her hugely successful performance career as a dancer, and the value and principals that she has used to carve out her choreographic voice. Danae & Dionysios are choreographers and dancers from Greece, as well as artistic directors of Small Axe dance company. Based in Athens, Greece they have been creating work together since 2015.
Danae and Dionysios draw inspiration from nature, animals and indigenous civilizations sharing their thoughts and concerns about the environment and life on our planet. Their canvas is raw and robust and with abstract brushes they encourage a perfect balance.
Their new creation ‘In Wind or Dust' premiered at Skånes Dansteater February 29, 2024.

Choreographer Liam Francis joins host Kit Brown for a conversation about his background in hip-hop and how he has approached that in the context of contemporary dance. Liam talks about his transition from dancing to choreographing, and about his particular vision for a kind of person-centred leadership in the dance studio.
We talked to Liam on the morning of the premiere of his work ‘Going Steady’. A playful exposé into the relationships and courting rituals of humans and animals made for Skånes Dansteater. In the piece, five dancers make their way through exciting beginnings, sad endings and everything in between, accompanied by a sprinkling of summer jazz.
Liam won the Skånes Dansteater Production Prize in 2022 at RIDCC – Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition. The prize resulted in this commission.

Nicholas Thayer playfully describes his practise as ‘musicing’. He is a London born and Netherlands based composer, producer and interdisciplinary artist. In spring 2023 Nicholas was part of an impressive array of artists that collaborated together to create the work 'in:finite', choreographed by Wubkje Kuindersma. 'in:finite' is an immersive performance fusing choreography, music, and visual art in an unconventional performance setting. The work navigates the line between everything is ok an everything is not ok.
In this episode Nicholas and host Samuel Denton talk about co-creating experiences with audiences, experiencing music through other senses, the value of decentering yourself and humans not necessarily being the most important thing. And lastly, the vastness of time, opening spaces for slowness and contemplation.

Dance pedagogue David Scarantino has danced with Tero Saarinen company for the last 10 years and has been teaching Tero technique, the dance method used by the Finnish company. He’s also recently written a thesis on dance pedagogy called ‘Reimagining dialogue: how can embodiment teach?’.
This episode introduces a new DancePod host: Tiemen Stemerding. Internationally renowned Norwegian choreographer and theatre director Jo Strømgren has created over 200 productions. His latest work for Skånes Dansteater, 'The Dropouts', is a chaotic circus, full of flawed characters. Anything seems to be possible, but everything goes wrong.
Podcast host Kit Brown, one of 'The Dropouts' dancers, talks to Jo about his career, about making strange ideas accessible and taking the audience on a weird ride. Erika Silgoner is an ltalian choreographer and dancer based in Milan. She founded ESKLAN in Milan in 2010, which has developed into an international dance ensemble of 10 dancers performing around the world.
Today's episode was recorded last June just as Erika was finalising her new work 'Wild Fellas'. An outdoor summer dance performance which toured extensively around the region of Skåne, meeting audiences in unexpected places amongst streets, parks and squares. Now, Erika is back in Malmö to restage 'Wild Fellas' with a new cast af dancers and adapt the work for indoor venues' ahead of a school's tour and performances in our own theatre as part af our Lunch dance concept.

In his work choreographer Fernando Melo often paints powerful visual images with stage elements and the human body, full of detail and sensitivity. A choreographic approach that demands both leadership and collaboration.

‘Vinterresa’ is an autobiographical work about Madeleine. Carl wants to visualize her inner thoughts and the fragmented and poetic nature of memories. He shares his thoughts about making peace with one’s experiences. That we are not determined by our past but can free ourselves and change direction if we want to.

Carl Knif is a dancer, choreographer, and the artistic director of Carl Knif Company in Helsinki. He visited Dancepod when he was in the later stages of his creation ‘Vinterresa‘, a new solo made for Skånes Dansteater’s dancer Madeleine Månsson.

Chiara Bersani is an ltalian dancer, choreographer, and artist. In this episode she also talks about her work as an activist.
Chiara speaks openly about the traumas of Covid, about being a disabled person during the pandemic’s first wave in Italy. She does not only share her anger as a woman and as a disabled person in the current moment, but also her optimism and the possibility of rebuilding new and better ways for disabled people to be part of mainstream art-making.
In December 2021 Chiara did a residency at Skånes Dansteater as part of the Swedish Arts Grants Committee's lnternational Dance Program. Her work Moby Dick for Spinn Dance Company was performed here in November the same year, as part of our DansFunk festival. During 2022 she will be touring with her most recent work, 'Gentle Unicorn'.

Jessica Helbach is a Dutch designer and one of the co-creators behind ‘Out of the Blue’. In this episode Jessica talks about her role as a costume designer and about her process: starting broad then getting down to the details. We chat to Tina Tarpgaard about her latest work for Skånes Dansteater, ‘Vår Dag’. Tina is a Danish choreographer and founder of Recoil performance group based in Copenhagen. In this episode, she talks about making the durational dance experience that is ‘Vår Dag’; how we need to value a broader spectrum of dance; and the energy she gets from meeting people and doing dance in different social contexts. Anouk van Dijk is a Dutch choreographer, director and the creator of Countertechnique. In this episode, she talks about the underlying themes in the work ‘Out of the blue’. The performance is a carnival of colour that celebrates the power of the imagination and the resilience to adapt.
She explains some of the rationale behind her movement system Countertechnique and emphasises the power of distraction, the inherent creativity of technique, and she discusses the kind of tasks and tools she uses to feel in the moment. She also touches on longevity and her extraordinary love of dance and dedication to it.

Roser López Espinosa creates a lively and playful physical universe of refined poetic imagery, intense teamwork, and, very often with a touch of humour. Roser introduces you to her duet 'Fine Lines'.
The work is a danced dialogue between two outstanding women who are constantly challenging and pushing each other. 'Fine Lines' was premiered in the Netherlands in 2020 as part of Mixed Doubles, a programme of duets produced with our partners in the project Europe Beyond Access. It will tour internationally and perform at Skånes Dansteater in November 2021.

Madeleine Månsson took a different route than many on her journey towards a professional career as a dancer. A former social worker who found dance as an adult. Madeleine has toured around the world with the highly acclaimed duet Dare to Wreck. Today she is working on a new solo with choreographer Carl Knif called Vinterresa.
Madeleine shares how she uses translation in her creative work and teaching – and the importance of having a community of disabled artists for support, inspiration and everything else that keeps her dancing.

Amy Raymond, freelance choreographer and teacher of classical ballet and improvisation, is joining Skånes Dansteater’s dancers for a week of workshops. Amy and host Samuel Denton talk about observing dancers, decision making and how critical analysis can be a good thing.

Award-winning lighting designer Minna Tiikkainen has made a significant international career in performing arts in Europe. Minna is one of the exciting artists that choreographer Tero Saarinen has brought together to create “Transit” and collectively address one of the most crucial issues of our time.

Get to know Tero Saarinen, internationally acclaimed choreographer and creator of Transit, this fall’s big dance performance with Skånes Dansteater, played at Malmö Opera. Tero shares his thoughts on his new work and on the process in the dance studio.
Transit is an ambitious, multidisciplinary work with 19 dancers exploring the contemporary crisis of mass extinction and the world’s alarming loss of biodiversity. The performance is set to Stonework, Drifts, and Water Atlas composed by Sebastian Fagerlund and played live by the Malmo Opera Orchestra. Transit world premieres in Malmö on 3 October 2020.

Dancers Kit Brown and Sarah Bellugi-Klima explore the magical universe of Djurens karneval (Carnival of the Animals). Created by Spanish choreographer Marcos Morau to the tones of Camille Saint-Saëns’s classic masterpiece ‘Le carnaval des animaux’. Sarah shares her experience with working with Marcos and his team’s spectacular visual design and distinctive and technically ambitious movement material.
