Imperfect Dad MD Podcast with Dr Jeremy Toffle: Recent Episodes

Doctor Podcast Network

The role of dad has changed for the 21st century physician father. With that comes different expectations compared to the physician dads before us. With so much changing, where do we turn to to get answers about how to be the dad we always expected ourselves to become? This podcast is designed with the physician dad in mind. I am Dr Jeremy Toffle, physician, husband, father to two boys, and self proclaimed imperfect dad. Through my own struggles as a parent, I have come to find that there are several key core foundations that make up who we are as a parent; if we chose to improve these core foundations, we can strive to be the father we always expected to be. Join me in this show as I discuss each of these core foundations as well as interview experts in various fields of these same principals. I also discuss dad life with new and experienced dads, helping us rediscover what it means to be a dad in the 21st century as a physician and learn to embrace our imperfections along the way. This is the Imperfect Dad MD Podcast

When I was looking into residency options for pediatrics I never intended to actually move a plane ride away from my family. However, when those match cards came in I found myself staring at a name I had almost forgot I had placed at the top. Nebraska.

Moving to the middle of the country from my hometown of West Virginia was a shock at first. Yet overtime it began to feel like home, and eventually when we had kids we decided to stick around.

Now I love where I live including the community I am a part of, coworkers I get to see daily, and friends we have made along the way. Yet, one of the hardest things has been being away from my family.

If you are like us, my kids don't get to see their grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins very often. Typically they get to visit them about twice a year, usually during the summer and winter months. At their age I do not think they recognize the distance, considering this is all they have known. For me, it is a very different feeling.

Recently my wife was gracious enough to buy me a plane ticket home for JUST ME as she cared for our boys. 5 days round trip to go spend time with my parents and one of my sisters child free - how incredible is that? The experience of it left me reinvigorated and excited. It also taught me a lot of valuable lessons.

Listen in today as I talk about the experience of it and why I think YOU need to start planning your next trip soon!

This past month an article was released by the Brookings Institution (and thus several news agencies) focusing on the cost to raise a child in 2020.  They estimated that by the time that child finished high school at 17 years or age, you will have spent over 300000 dollars on them.  That's a lot of money!

However, the topic of money and how much you spend on your kids is not as simple as this estimate suggests.  This estimate would have you spending about 18000 a year on them.  I know physicians that spend more than that on private schools alone.

When we look at the cost of raising our children, it is important to understand where our money goes and WHY we spend that money in the first place.

Listen in this week as I discuss my thoughts on the numbers above and how it applies very differently to physicians than it does to the general population.

The topic of "love" is one that is frequently discussed but never fully agreed upon.

When our kids looks to us and ask us, "What is love, daddy?" I should have a quick easy answer for them to understand, right?

Sadly, love is not so easily explained, let alone understood, by most of us.

In the last few weeks I had a patient ask me this specific question.  The topic had never been brought up at home, and he was concerned he did not KNOW how to LOVE.  Not exactly a medical question, but we spent the better part of 45 minutes discussing it in the clinic.

To be able to explain love, we first need to know what it means to us and how it varies between our spouse, our kids, and others around us.

Listen in this week as I discuss my thoughts on the topic of love and how to approach it with your child.

Today's episode is an interview with Dr Ryan Stegink.

Dr. Ryan Stegink majored in physics before going to medical school, ultimately specializing in general pediatrics. Previously bringing many charts home and going through burnout less than a year out of training, he now leaves work at work, so he can be more present at home as a husband and father. Not content to keep this transformation to himself, Dr. Stegink has started a podcast and now group coaching program to help physicians with their charting and wellness.

Have you ever talked to your kids about "wants" versus "needs"?

How do you approach every day purchases versus luxury purchases when discussing them with your kids?

Does your kid spend all their allowance money on rocks? (yes, one of our might just do that)

In this week's episode of the Imperfect Dad MD podcast I focus on the topic of saving versus spending and RECOGNIZING what your kids do. It is interesting to watch our kids and how they utilize currency, be it money they gained from allowance or birthdays to the tickets they "earn" playing video games at the arcade.

I think money can be a hard topic depending on how you approach it with your children. However, we ALL want our kids to thrive in society when it comes to their finances. It is never too early to approach the topic; yet, like last week's show discussed, it is important to know the difference in your kids' personalities when it comes to saving and spending BEFORE you start to talk about it.

Listen in this week as I discuss this important topic and how I recognized the differences in our own kids.

I recently released a Reel on Instagram of our two boys sword fighting. It was under the premise that I usually discourage our boys from fighting, yet I encouraged them to fight with swords and targets on their bodies.

As I watched the videos back, I very easily recognized the difference in fighting styles between the older and younger son. One was more reserved and calculating, while the other simply berserked his attacks with no interest in hitting the target.

Correlating these behaviors to every day life, it was easy to deduce the differences in our boys and how they handle daily situations. Stress, discipline, friends, school - each of them uses their own specific personalities to respond to these external stimuli, and if I wasn't aware of this then it would be difficult to know how to talk to them in times of stress.

We all attempt to raise our children in a similar fashion. However, we all know at once that this is folly. Each of our kids handles our normal mannerisms when it comes to handling time-outs, eating behaviors, bed time, school concerns, etc. Some of our kids may thrive on the way we parent, while others may tumble.

Today I discuss these differences in our kids and how I use that to determine how to manage every day topics with them, be it school, friends, discipline at home, stress, or other situations.

I didn't want to record this episode. I had a completely different episode planned for this week.

However, we are now 1-2 weeks out from school starting for our kids and this thing we call Monkey Pox is becoming a hot topic. How Hot, you may ask? The WHO (World Health Organization) has just deemed to to be a Global Health Emergency. They don't use those words lightly.

Here in the United States we are starting to see more and more cases of this spreading. As kids plan to get back to school, the thought of small hands touching many surfaces continues to drive my mind into concern for how this illness may spread.

Today's episode focuses on what we do know about monkey pox - the symptoms to watch for, the potential (or lack thereof) treatment and vaccination for it, the time table to develop symptoms after exposure as well as how long you or your kid is contagious once you start to show symptoms. You probably are not going to like what I have to say.

Listen in this week, and let me know how I am being way to paranoid about this specific topics. I truly hope I am.

In the medical community the term "Imposter Syndrome" has become very popular. The concept began back in the 1970s by Drs. Clance and Imes. They met with many high accomplished academics, admins, and students who felt their accomplishments were not their own and were, in a lack of a better term, frauds.

This idea of being an imposter as grown exponentially in the physician community. In fact, some studies show the rate of physician imposter syndrome to be close to 60%. I personally blame the COVID era for this statistic, as we have seen the social media community go from physicians being heroes to being villains very quickly.

However, when the topic of imposter syndrome relate to physician PARENTING gets searched, there is very little to go off of. Many of the articles are either opinion based or surveys, and many times they focus on the physician mother. This makes sense. I have discussed in past episodes how the gender gap and changes in regards to parenting has negatively affected both sexes, but moreso females versus males.

HOWEVER, there are basically NO articles out there related to the physician dad and the imposter syndrome associated with being a parent.

Today I discuss my thoughts on this, why I feel like it is a VERY IMPORTANT topic to discuss, and what you can do as a physician parent to address this.

Check out this week's episode on Imposter Syndrome as a Physician Dad and let me know what you think!

When was the last family vacation you took? Was it memorable? Enjoyable? Full of stress and frustration?

Many of us as parents recognize that family vacations are not always truly "vacations." Sometimes stressing over travel, food choices, sleep schedules, tantrums, or simply picking what to do when we get to our destination can lead to less-than-desirable memories.

Last month my family and I traveled to North Carolina to spend a week at the beach with my parents, siblings, and nieces. This involved air travel and spending time in the airport (not a fun situation at this current moment), coming up with food choices our boys would eat while there, anticipating arguments between who would be at the beach, be at the pool, or doing other activities, etc. All of these scenarios could have led to arguments, disappointment, or more stress than when we aren't on vacation. However, this summer I chose to approach things very differently.

Listen in this week as I discuss what I learned on this trip and how I plan to utilize that for the future.

We are BACK!

Last month I decided to take time away from the podcast and focus more on myself and my family.  As the month of June is designated as Men's Health Month, I felt it was poignant to give more attention to my physical and mental health when it comes to being a father, husband, and physician.

But now I am back in the podcast chair and ready to roll.  A lot happened in the month of June and I am excited to share it all with you!  I feel the best way to first summarize the month is to talk about the Top 5 Things I Learned this month.  These were

1) One child is easier than two.
2) Your 5-year-old will not keep your secrets for you.
3) Screen time is ok, sometimes.
4) Let it flow.
5) The US medical system versus the Ukrainian medical system.

If any of these sound interesting to you, OR you are thinking ,"What the heck do any of these have in common??" check out this week's episode!

Today is June 1st, meaning it is the beginning of Men's Health Month! This month is dedicated to men focusing on their health in various aspects, including diet, exercise, medical health, and mental health.

Throughout the 123 episodes of this show, I feel those topics have been touched on rather frequently. Early on I spoke with Dr Jonar de Guzman in Episode 10 on Lifestyle Medicine and how that affects physician dads. I spent last July focusing solely on the book Blue Zones and my thoughts on how it affects our daily choices.

My various discussions with other dads has placed a spotlight on the gender gap we find ourselves with being parents in today's world.

In today's episode I challenge each and every listener to make a change for the month of June. Be it diet, physical activity, mental health - choose something to change this month to help make YOU a healthier person.

If you are curious about MY change for the month, listen in to today's episode!

Also, I mention the podcast Docs2Dads by Dr Scott Grant. I highly recommend you give it a listen this month as he plans to focus a lot of his attention on Men's Health Month.

I have spoked several times on the topic of defining what success means to you, and what does it mean for your child to be successful.

We all have different definitions of success and how we interpret it. Recently I saw an article posted on Facebook in regards to setting up your child for Entrepreneur Success. Although we probably all want to see our children become business savvy adults, I felt like the article touched on several topics that can simply set up our children to be successful in many different ways.

If you are interested, the article can be found here. Basically, it looks at 4 key points in our children and how each one can potentially set up our child for success of failure later in life.
Those 4 items are:
1) Company Kept: Who your kid hangs out with.
2) Education: Not the school they go to, but what they learn early in life.
3) Accountability: We could all probably use some help with that.
4) Self-motivation: Like me forcing myself out of bed to work out in the morning.

Listen in as I discuss these 4 key points mentioned in the article and my own thoughts on them.

This week's Wednesday episode focused on the topic of anxiety and depression in our adolescents and the WHY to how it all started.  One of the more important topics involving mental health is how Lifestyle can both positively and negatively affect mental health.

What is Lifestyle?  I am talking about sleep, diet, water intake, exercise, substance use - these key topics can significantly affect your child's ability to deal with mental health conditions.

Listen in as I discuss these key topics and what you can do to help your child.

It is no secret that adolescent mental health conditions have become a major talking point since the pandemic began. Schools shutting down and moving to virtual learning, the loss of sports and extracurricular activities, and simple socialization halting one day in March of 2020, it is no wonder that some kids are struggling to get back to "normal."

However, we can't only blame COVID. Mental health conditions like anxiety and depression usually take time to develop. Little things here and there add up to what we see in our patients in the clinic - elevated PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores, kids struggling with school, and parents not sure where to turn next.

This week I discuss the topic of adolescent depression and anxiety and determining WHY your child is struggling with this. I also approach how you can start to address it at home while waiting to get in with your primary care physician or counselor.

Last weekend was Mother's Day, and I HOPE you treated the mother of your children (or your OWN mother) to a wonderful weekend.

In our house we typically we let mom sleep in, I cook crepes with nutella, I get the kids ready for the day, we go to church, do brunch, and then mom gets to do whatever she wants the rest of the day while I take care of the kids. Cards are made, little gifts are provided, and I hope we do enough to show my wife that she is appreciated.

After doing all of these things, I could not help but be surprised at hearing the WIDE variety of things dads do (or don't do) for their wife on Mother's Day.

First off, this is NOT a judgement show. I recognize that everyone treats holidays in different ways and fashions, so don't jump down my throat after listening in.

HOWEVER - I do see this day as a great opportunity to teach our kids how to show our loved ones we care for the. YES we should show this person our appreciation more than once a year, but it is a great time to model the behaviors you hope your kids will one day portray as well.

Listen in as I discuss my thoughts on this. And I do mention I am recovering - because I am tired. Essentially soloing parenting all weekend was exhausting. TONS of props to all of you single parents out there. You are SAINTS. I'm going to go take a nap now.

One of the more common questions Pediatricians get asked by parents nowadays is, "What is a good age to buy my kid a smart phone?"

I am kidding, actually. Most kids have the phone already in hand before the question even gets asked.

Today our kids are being raised in a technologically diverse world that we could only dream of 30 years ago. With that advancement comes attachment. Attachment to devices. Emails, message boards, video conferences, social media posts - they all coincide with today's world and the expectations brought upon us. It is hard enough to manage it all as an adult. How do we expect our kids to do the same?

Smart phones have become the main device for the general population in the United States. Not only does this give your child access to phone calls and texting, but it also introduces them to anything they desire to search for online as well as an ever-growing list of social media apps.

Is any of this healthy for our kids? Can we counter the smart phone option with much more appropriate devices?

Listen in today as I discuss my thoughts on this and let me know what YOU think!

Apparently I am really into movie reviews lately and how they relate to parenting.

Today's Friday Review is another movie review - this time with the newly released Bad Guys movie. The premise of the movie seems simple enough - the 5 quintessential bad guys in most story books (Big Bad Wolf, Shark, Tarantula, Piranha, and a Snake) are cast by society as bad guys, so they obviously act bad. They steal. They cheat. And they just don't care.

Yet as the movie goes on, we see them "try" to be good. I won't give the story away here, but it is easy to see how easily swayed the masses are on if someone is "good" or "bad" based on social media posts, hearsay, and general opinion.

What a great message to teach our kids. Most of our kids will be raised with social media as part of their every day lives, sadly. They will have to manage understanding what they see online and trying to decide if it is true or not. They will have to form opinions based on their experiences, and sadly some of those experiences will be in the online world.

Listen in today as I discuss this topic and how I think you can BEST approach it with your own children.

You may not look at a movie like Guardians of the Galaxy and think, "Hey, I can learn some great parenting tips from that!" However, that is just what I did this weekend with our kids.

Now, some of you may think that allowing our 9 and 5 year old to watch these two movies are a bit out of their age range. In most situations I would agree with you. However, I allowed these movies to be a teaching moment for them. We discussed initially how things would be said by grown ups in the movie and why they shouldn't use those words. We paused the movie to discuss hard topics, scary scenes, are people dying. Finally, we laughed together at the insanity that is the Guardians.

After finishing the first movie, our boys BEGGED to watch the 2nd one as well. I am not usually a two-movies-in-a-row type of parent, but at this moment it made no sense NOT to say yes, so we went for it. And boy am I glad I did. The second movie is packed full of great parenting themes between the laughs, foul language, fighting, and good times.

Listen in as I discuss all of this and more in today's episode.

On this week's Wednesday episode, I discussed how understanding the negative entities found in the Harry Potter universe can actually improve our roles as parents. This was due in parent to recently seeing the new Fantastic Beasts movie, which I really enjoyed!

So like any normal person, I decided to listen to other people's opinions on the content. And boy was it NEGATIVE.

Let's be honest - in the online world of YouTube and podcasts, negativity sells. No one wants to hear how much you liked something. They want to know EXACTLY why you disliked it or even hated it.

As I listened in to these various reviews, I quickly learned one thing - the reason these people disliked the movie was due to their expectations and wants for that specific film. How did they want the movie's main storyline to go? Why didn't they explain that spell? Why didn't that scene go the way I wanted?

As their "review" continues on, the negativity builds. Just like the despair that a dementor allows to fester, the writer builds up negativity with more negativity. However, it is not due to a poor done film. It is due to PERSONAL expectations not being met.

When it comes to parents it is easy to be a negative reviewer. When we look at how our kids act or what they do, it is simpler to see the negative things rather than the positive.

Listen in this Friday as I discuss my thoughts on this, and ask yourself this simple question - are you the negative reviewed when it comes to your kids, or the positive one?

This past weekend I was filled with joy as I was able to see the new Fantastic Beasts Movies in theaters with a good friend of mine. I had been waiting to see how the movie unfolded and the story continued.

If you have not seen the movies, there is a certain character named Credence who develops a negative entity known is an Obscurus. This negative entity grows within him because Credence tries to hide from the world what he really is - a wizard being raised by a fanatical anti-magic foster mother. The more he tries to suppress his magical powers, the more this negative entity grows inside of him, eventually to the point where he can no longer suppress it and it is released to cause mayhem and chaos.

The Harry Potter universe is no stranger to negative entities. In Book 3, Prisoner of Azkaban, we are introduced to dementors. These are creatures that feed on people's happiness, leaving them only in sadness in despair.

So what can we learn from these two negative entities, and how can we apply it to our every day lives are parents and physicians? Listen in to find out!

One of the biggest stressors in medicine is dealing with insurance companies. Billing, collections. prior authorizations - these situations are some of the biggest reasons physicians are turning away from medicine.

What if you could do away with all of that?

Today I speak with Dr Phil Boucher. He is a pediatrician, husband, father, and recently decided to open his own Direct Primary Care (DPC) pediatric practice in Lincoln. Nebraska.
In this week's episode we talk dad life and what drove him into creating a DPC clinic for his patients.

If you have ever wondered about the DPC model and the freedom it can bring, this is absolutely the episode for you.

You can reach out to Dr Boucher at his website www.drphilboucher.com where you can find his other passion projects.

Phil also has a passion helping other physicians with their business passion projects. You can learn more at www.highyieldphysicians.com

This week I got to speak with Dr Michael Hersh - a gastroenterologist, husband, dad, and physician coach.  Some of you may be still asking what a coach is, why do people do coaching, or is it all just a scam?

In today's review show I share my thoughts on physician coaches and life coaches in general.  Listen in and let me know what YOUR thoughts are as well!

It seems like the topic of "Life Coaching" has become more prevalent the last two years, mostly in part due to the pandemic. Many people were feeling lost, unsure of who they are or what they wanted, which typically leads individuals to searching for help.

In medicine, however, physicians have been feeling the sense of feeling lost and helpless much longer. Burnout has been a major topic within all medical fields for the last decade at least, with a strong emphasis on life at work, life at home, physician depression and anxiety, etc. However, when someone approaches you as a Life Coach stating they want to help you, yet they have absolutely NO IDEA what it is to be a physician, let alone go through burnout themselves, it is hard to assume they are going to be any help.

This is where physician coaches come into play. These are physicians who have put the time and effort into being certified to be life coaches (as well as going through coaching themselves) all while working their normal doctor jobs.

One such physician life coach is Dr Michael Hersh. He is a gastroenterologist, father, husband, and physician coach at Better Physician Life Coaching. He coaches physicians on life balance, goal setting, money mindset, self-confidence, and relationships. You can learn more about him at his website at www.betterphysicianlife.com

Listen in today as we talk about what got HIM into coaching, how it has benefited not only him as a doctor but ALSO a father, and how you can check it out as well.

He also gives a LOT of pearls of wisdom on helping your kid deal with worry and other thought processes, so you don't want to miss this one!

This week I spoke with Dr Scott Grant on the topic of ACEs and what they are.  Today I wanted to address the topic more and expand on it by discussing the different types of stress our kids with on a daily basis.  These types of stress may be healthy, teaching our kids to deal with conflict in the future.  Other forms of stress, however, can be seen as detrimental to our child's brain development.

Has the term ACEs ever crossed your pathway (that is, outside of your weekly poker game)? Are you familiar with WHAT they are and WHY they are so important to understand as a parent?

In today's episode I have the privilege to talk with Dr Scott Grant, a Pediatrician in Michigan, husband, father, and podcaster at the Docs2Dads Podcast where he discusses important dad topics for all new and experienced dads. One of the topics he frequently discusses is that of ACEs - also known as Adverse Childhood Events. Today we discuss what these exactly are, how they effect children into adulthood, and how we can help our children avoid these in their own lives.

Listen in to find out about ACEs and more!

Tell me if you have experienced this before: your kid comes from home from school and all YOU want to do is ask them about their day? How was school? Who did you play with? What did you learn in math? Yet when your kid opens their mouth, it isn't to answer your questions. It is to complain about something. It is to throw a tantrum about wanting a snack. It is complaining that you don't have a playdate scheduled for them.

Why is it that after school is just SO DANG HARD? What is it about this time that seems to make it more difficult than normal for our kids, and what can we do as parents to help them?

This Friday Review show I talk briefly on the topic of the After-School Restraint Collapse which is discussed in various parenting blogs and articles. The one I reference in this show if found here.

I remember being in high school watching late night TV and the commercials that would be on were always some get healthy quick scheme, random health drinks, ab-blaster machines, or the occasional low budget P90X commercials before it became popular.

Many people look at paying for someone to help you get healthy as a ridiculous concept. As physicians we KNOW that eating healthy and staying active is what we should all be doing, yet many of us fail to do it in our own lives.

Why is that? Many people may blame it on their patient schedules, overnight call, or the bad food choices in the hospital cafeteria. Yet what if it was more than just that? What if it was more about your INVESTED MOTIVATION to make a change in your life?

The last 10 weeks my wife and I partook in an exercise program run by Farrell's. It essentially consisted of kickboxing and strength training exercises mixed with nutritional goals and meal planning. Now some of you out there may look at programs like these and laugh, stating that as a physician I should not have to PAY someone to tell me to eat healthy and exercise.

However, research shows that when you do invest financially into something (be it a book, exercise program. coaching, etc) you actually gain MORE benefit from it than if it were given to you for free. Think about it - if I wrote a book and gave you the choice to take a free copy OR pay my $10 to get it, you would most likely take the free option. HOWEVER, you would be more likely to read it and INVEST YOURSELF into the material of the book if you paid me the money. So in the end, which choice is better?

Listen in this week as I discuss my journey with this 10 week program as well as my thoughts on this topic and more!

My wife recently surprised me with a date night to see the new Batman movie. If you know my wife, you know that this is not typically a movie she would willingly choose to see.

During the movie the viewer watches as Bruce Wayne struggles with the identity of his father, first seeing him as this perfect philanthropist, yet later learns of some buried family secrets (no spoilers here). This shift in the image of his father seems to take a toll on Bruce, and it had me questioning how I would respond.

We see our parents in a certain eye of childhood. We know what they present to us and how they act around us, which molds many of us into who we are today. however, what if you learned something new about your dad that shook those foundational beliefs? How would it affect you? And with those thoughts in mind, how are YOU shaping YOUR image for your own kids?

Listen in this week as I discuss my thoughts on this topic!

This Wednesday I discussed various articles focusing on Physician Parent burnout and how it differs based on gender. One thing I mentioned was I did not know how things changed since COVID.

Well give me two days and a goal and I found some articles looking at that exact topic. There was an article on Medscape by Avery Hurt Nov 12, 2021 that reviewed a study published in JAMA Open Network titled Experiences of Work-Family Conflict and Mental Health Symptoms by Gender Among Physician Parents During the COVID-19 Pandemic that looked at this exact topic. The results were surprising.

Listen in today as I discuss this specific article and how COVID may have pushed the Gender Disparity back even further when it comes to Physician Dads versus Physician Moms.

How many of you remember what it was like growing up with your parents?
What was dad's role?
What did mom do?
Were their jobs "defined" or did it seem fluid and ever changing?

If you were raised like many kids before the 90's, you probably had more of a "traditional" family. Dad went to work and mainly worked whereas mom did most of the household tasks as well as getting kids to and from activities. Was that you?

However, we now have merging parenting roles when it comes to mom and dad. What technically IS the role of dad now? What about mom? And who the heck prepared us for this changing landscape??

Trying to balance being a parent as well as a physician is hard. Yet, now that parenting roles have adjusted, how does that affect our stress and frustrations?

In today's episodes I discuss several articles looking at this very topic and how it may play a role in our every day stress and sense of burnout. Listen in and let me know what you think!

This week is the first week of Lent if you follow the Christian calendar. I elected not to have a Wednesday episode in order to focus on my family this last week and attend Ash Wednesday service with them. However, the lenten season is an important to recognize the things in life we with to make changes to.

Some of you listening to the show may not be familiar with Lent, and if not that is ok. In the beginning of the episode I give a brief background of what Lent is and why it is so important on the Christian calendar.

Typically during Lent we decide the things we want to GIVE UP. What are the bad tendencies and habits we do that we choose to rid ourselves from for the next 40 days? Some people may look at this as the same way they look at New Years Resolutions. We get all excited the first day, talk about all the changes we will make, only to find 3 weeks later that we are back in our old ways. Why is that?

I think we tend to fall backward when the thing we are doing is REMOVING something from our lives. That is HARD. Not only that, usually removing something from our lives only affects one person - US.

But what if instead of removing something from your daily life, you ADDED something instead? Find something positive you do for your spouse or your kids that you KNOW you should be doing but seems to have fallen to the back burner,

Listen in this week as I discuss these thoughts and more!

This week my wife and I attended our Bible study where we meet with other couples we are friends with in our church and focus on certain topics, all while hoping our kids can play nicely together. This week brought dads into the discussion, and I felt it was prudent to discuss it.

Did you know that Father's Day is the LEAST attended church service of the year?

Did you know Mother's Day is the MOST attended church service just behind Christmas and Easter?

Why? What is it about church that draws in moms but not the dads? His church too easy? Too cushy? Not challenging enough for our "macho persona?"

This week I wanted to reflect on how our BELIEFS are extremely important to how we parent our children as DADS, no matter what religion you practice. I also wanted to touch on the idea that Jesus is "too docile" for male genome and why that is actually far from the truth.

Did any of you catch the Winter Olympics this year? If you remotely paid attention, you probably caught at least some of the drama surrounding the Russian Olympic Committee and their female figure skaters. There were positive drug tests, poor sportsmanship shown by at least one of their skaters after the event, and a lonely gold medalist sitting with no one to celebrate with.

Our children use sports to learn how to socialize, stay active, stay healthy, and most of important of all - deal with ADVERSITY.

So what can we learn from the coaches of the ROC women's figure skating team? What did they show (or NOT show) in competition in regards to their ability to help THEIR skaters deal with adversity, and how can we apply that to our kids?

Listen in this week to find out how you can help YOUR kid with future let downs.

Last week you may have noticed I was a little down on myself.

I was due to leave in TWO DAYS to speak at the Physician Wellness and Financial Literacy Conference in Phoenix, Arizona when I came down wit COVID. Due to this, I was forced to cancel all travel plans, record my talk, and watch from home.

When this first occurred I was crushed. Let's be honest: I had been preparing for this event for months. It was the literal ONE THING I had planned for myself for the entire year. The rest of the year's time off is already devoted to family events. So when I lost that ONE THING, I struggled.

However, I was able to move past the disappointment and frustration and decided to focus more on the POSITIVES of being home with COVID. Many people may not look at this situation and think anything positive can come from it, but let me assure you it was easier to discover than I thought it may be.

Listen in as I dealt with my OWN thoughts on this situation and how it brought me more JOY than I anticipated

I can't believe that this podcast has made it to 100 episodes! When I first started I never imagined where this show would take me or the people that I got to meet in the process.

Most podcasts will do some sort of celebration episode when they reach 100. However, a recent situation has seemed to put a damper on my festive spirits.

It is Tuesday night as I sit recording this episode. The Tuesday before I was SUPPOSED to be flying to Phoenix for the Physician Wellness and Financial Literacy Conference hosted by WCI where I was supposed to give a talk. Yet the universe had other plans for me.

Last night I tested positive for COVID. No new exposures. Nothing different at work. No recent lifestyle changes that would have increased my risk for contracting this illness. Yet here I am, sitting in my quarantined bedroom, flights cancelled, meetings postponed, and friendly get togethers I had planned at the meeting all but gone. Needless to say, I was just a tad bit disappointed.

Today's 100th episode I discuss how I dealt with and currently continue to deal with this situation. Disappointment tends to be just a part of life, however some situations are harder to deal with than others.

What can we learn from them? How do we pick ourselves back up? Do we give up or move forward?

Listen in to see my thoughts on all of this and more.

This week I lamented on birthday parties and how they both positively and negatively affect our kids.  Well, seeing as our older son's party has come and gone, I felt it was important to give it some self reflection and discuss what I learned from the party, how well our son did with the party, and things I can improve on next time.

Our older son recently celebrated a birthday, which meant the obligatory party, friends, gifts, etc.  We look at birthdays as a way to celebrate an individual, improving their self esteem and sense of self in the process.  However, is it possible to go TOO far on birthdays?

Today I discuss my thoughts on how the celebration of birthdays has changed since I was younger, and why I think that (in some cases) they could do more harm than good.

No I don't hate birthday parties.  Just take a listen.

This week my son asked about his worthiness in relation to the movie Thor.  As I sat down to think about the topic, I can't help but think of the parable of the Prodigal Son in the book of Luke.  How do we learn from these stories as parents?  How can we relate them to our own lives and children?  Although the Bible intends to have God be the father in the story and we are the children, it is also important to view it from the parental side of the coin.

Listen in as I discuss this story and how it applies to being a parent.

As I was putting our 5-year-old to bed the other night, he looked and asked, "Dad, am I worthy?"

Worthy of what you might ask?

This last week our kids finally saw the first Thor movie and Avengers movie. I know, I know. We are a bit behind.

If you (somehow) are not familiar with the movies, Thor starts out as a hot-headed, war seeking young adult set to inherit the throne from his father, Odin. Odin had spent all of Thor's childhood focusing on trying to make him a good king. Lessons. stories, etc. However, when it comes time to hand over the scepter, Thor greatly disappoints his father's wishes. He is then cast out of Asgard, stripped of his power and title, and sent to live with the mortals on Earth.

The entire movie is essentially watching Thor come to grips with his choices and how they led to where he is. In his mind, his father has forgotten him and his future is bleak.

However, rather than forget about him, Odin decided to give his son another chance. A spell is cast on the hammer Mjolnir, and if anyone who is WORTHY should lift the hammer, they would be given the powers of Thor. As in most movies, Thor gets the hammer after learning from his mistakes and then saves the day (spoilers I guess?).

So when my 5-year-old asked if he was worthy, he was relating it to being able to hold Thor's hammer. Yet, what does being worthy even mean? How does it vary from parent to parent? How do we get our kids to not only FEEL worthy, but become the person we hope for them to grow into?

Today's show I focus on this topic and my thoughts behind it.

You may have noticed that there was no Friday Review show last week. There was a reason for this!

Recently my wife and I started a new fitness program that is 10 weeks long. Exercise 6 days a week, change and document eating patterns, etc. We get totally do this, right?

Well for me, this also meant changing my sleep patterns. See, the only time I can exercise is in the morning. That means waking up at 5 AM instead of close to 7 like I used to, thus shifting my entire day by 2 hours. What does that mean? EVERYTHING I used to do at night is now gone.

And that kind of sucks. Changing routines so drastically puts a lot of stress on the brain. Our brains hate routine changes, and the first couple of weeks are very difficult.

Listen in as a discuss this today. Know that if YOU are going through some sort of routine changes, your are NOT alone. We can all embrace the suck, I mean imperfection, of it together!

Listen, I get it. We are ALL sick of talking about COVID. Years of our lives have been dominated by this topic. Fatigue as set in EVERYWHERE, including how we seem to manage it in terms of the population.

However, whenever I see articles on certain news sites that "kids do fine with Omicron," or some other variation of the title, I can't help but speak up. Everyone likes to use data points to prove a point, and I continue to be exhausted by how many times our kids are thrown into the middle of it.

Today's episode focuses on what we know as of today involving the Omicron variant and kids. The data used is from the AAP website and their data collect up to January 6, 2022. This is not me making up the numbers. It is me sharing the data and my thoughts on it.

Now, now of this is presented to SCARE you. It is simply there for you to make an educated decision for you and your family.

Take a listen and let me know what you think!

Also of note, the data presented in this podcast and article are up to January 6 numbers. As I look at the numbers of the next week prior to this posting, we added 981,488 COVID positive cases in kids! Insane numbers.

Yes. Yes. I know. We ALL seem to have a "get healthy" resolution when the new year rolls around. We find the latest diet craze or exercise machine and scream THIS IS OUR YEAR. A week rolls by and we are back into our pajama pants scraping the bottom of the ice cream box.

Most of us WANT to make changes in our lives to be happier and healthier. The problem is many times we don't have someone to truly keep us accountable.

This year my wife and I decided to embark on an exercise journey together.
10 week challenge.
Kick boxing and weight lifting.
It is going to KICK MY BUTT. But I am excited.
I am excited because I have someone to keep me accountable - my wife.

Today I talk briefly about utilizing my wife as an accountability partner and including our kids as well. If you have been thinking about making a big lifestyle change in your life but always seem to fall flat when you try, listen in today. Maybe you will find inspiration to get yourself back up on the bike. Or Rower. Or whatever other device you gifted yourself this holiday season.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone's 2022 is much more enjoyable than 2021 turned out to be.

One of the great things about 2021 for me was starting the podcast. I am almost a year into the show and can't believe how far it has come. Some of you are just learning about the show whereas others have been here from the start. Either way I greatly appreciate you tuning in.

With the New Year we are always looking for ways to change our lives for the better. Sometimes it takes getting advice from others. For me, I was able to receive advice from all types of fathers over this last year thanks to this show. Consider this week and the next couple episodes the very very abridged version of what you might have missed.

It is incredible what a single day can do for not only your demeanor but that of your child's as well.

This Wednesday's episodes I talked about (ok I complained) about how our recent holiday trip did not go as planned. Being out of our normal routines. our kids struggled. Abnormal living quarters. Different eating habits. Familiar faces we had not seen in over a year. All of these changes can add up to significant stimuli on the way our brain interprets the world around us. Thus, this can make handling stressful situations that much harder to tackle.

However, once we get back into our normal day-to-day routines, stress can be much more easily managed. Our brain can go on autopilot with our surroundings, allowing us to completely focus on the stressor at hand.

This Friday's show I discuss just how being back in our house for 24 hours as completely changed what felt like a never ending battle.

Well, we JUST got back from our trip for the holidays and I had to share my feelings on how it went with our kids.

You know when you have a trip you have been looking forward to for weeks, and then when it happens it feels like your kids do everything to ruin it? I'm sure you have been there in one way or another. Sometimes it is hard to get out of that mindset. It is HARD to focus on the positives of the trip when all you can seem to do is see the negatives.

This week I am bearing my soul a little bit, discussing how our trip became a struggle and how I FAILED because of it. But hey, we can only move up from here. Right?

Let me know if you can relate.

Happy Christmas Eve! No matter where you may be or what you may be doing, this time of year is important for all of us. I recognize some of you may be heading into work today for either a short day or an all nighter. If that is the case I just want you to know how appreciated YOU are and the care you provide to those around you.

In today's Friday Feelings show I wanted to discuss some of my family's traditions when it comes to Christmas. The reason is that they left a mark on me in different ways. I am hopeful that it may stir some memories of YOUR family's traditions this holiday season and maybe pus you into creating some new ones.

For some of us, medical school is the peak of our education. We focus all of our studies on the knowledge gained in medical school and residency and apply it to our careers. Any future learning is solely focused on this area of interest.

Imagine not only completing medical school, but also going to law school AND opening your own Financial Advisor group. That is exactly what Dr Cobin Soelberg did.

Today I get to talk dad life with Dr Soelberg who recently gained the title of "DAD" and how his background has molded him to the dad and physician he is today.

Cobin Soelberg, M.D., J.D. is a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist and owner of Greeley Wealth Management. As a practicing physician with legal training and financial expertise, Cobin has a unique perspective and understanding of his colleagues' clinical pressures and the financial worries that keep them awake at night. In addition, Cobin is a brand new dad! He and his wife welcomed their first child this past September. Cobin is learning to slow down, be present and enjoy this sweet time with his family.

You can reach Cobin at cobin@greeleywealth.com or www.greeleywealth.com when you are ready to accelerate your financial journey.

Last Friday I got to be a Grinch about Christmas decorations and trying to teach our kids the true meaning of Christmas.

With the holidays amongst I felt it was time for another COVID vaccine update. As a parent and dad I am trying to stay up to date on everything I can to make sure I have the best knowledge not just for my patients but for my family as well.

Recently I started listening again to the "This Week in Virology" podcast. If you have never listened they take deep dives into everything virus related. Sadly the last two years have been significantly focused on COVID, however they do an exceptional job discussing it. If you like to know EVERYTHING about viruses, your immune system, and the most recent studies go check them out.

They did an episode in the last month looking at a few studies that caught my eye. Two looked at the duration between dose 1 and dose 2 of the mRNA vaccines and asked if we should be spacing them out MORE. They other article looked more indepth at antibodies in breast milk of moms who were recently vaccinated. Listen in this week as I give my thoughts on their results and how it applies to me as a parent and pediatrician

If you are a parent out there you have probably watched some version of "The Grinch" on TV or in the theater. The basic premise is the Grinch decides he hates Christmas and plans to ruin in for all the Whos by stealing their decorations, lights, foods, toys, etc. Yet in the end he learns what Christmas is all about.

But what if it was all the Whos's fault in the beginning? What if their LACK of showing outsiders what Christmas is truly about is what led to the Grinch's disgust of it?

How do you portray your holidays to your kids? With the holiday season amongst us it is easy to get lost in the lights, sounds, and commercialization of it all. The same can be said for your kids. How are YOU as the parent helping them remember what meaning of that holiday is? Listen is as I discuss this topic.

It is that time of year again! With December here many people are searching for that special gift for their loved ones (or themselves). It seems that when the season of Christmas or other holidays commence our sense of NEEDS versus WANTS tend to intermingle. In August you decided NOT to buy those pair of shoes because the cost was ridiculous; however now with Santa around the corner we find various reasons that the cost really isn't that bad...

As parents we do this with our children as well. We may have said NO countless times to a specific toy for the last 4 months, only to be more than happy to buy it now and place it under the tree. Why is that? What is it about these holidays that drives us to make these purchases. More importantly, what are we teaching our kids?

You can call this episode the Scrooge episode for the season if you want. I talk about some of the reasons we feel the need to get all of these various items and WHY it is important to recognize it. I promise. This will be the only episode like this year. I think.

This Wednesday I discussed the father figure in Star Wars with Dr Junaid Niazi. We focused a lot on the Mandalorian character and his progression into being a dad.

In today's Friday review show I continue to explore the idea of how the cycle of fatherhood failures leads to the various crises in the Star Wars Universe. We see this in every day life as well. The way we were raised by our parents influences how we raise our kids. This then influences the way they raise their own kids, and so on. This cycle can either be a boon or bust when it comes to our futures; it is important to not only recognize how this affects us as parents today. We must also recognize that sometimes it is up to us to break the cycle.

As a dad, you tend to wonder how your kids will turn out. Did I do the right thing in that situation? Did I handle that conflict the best way? Did I really prepare my kid for the real world?

We see how our parenting directly and indirectly affects our kids on a daily basis. Through our kids we get to see the good AND the bad in our parenting.

But how does this affect the heroes we are familiar with? What if a better father figure is all we need to improve the lives of the villains in the world?

Today's episode I get to discuss how fatherhood is portrayed in the Star Wars Universe with Dr Junaid Niazi. Let's be honest. We just wanted to nerd out about this stuff. Let us know what you think!

Last week I spoke about my thoughts on how Marvel Super Heroes are molded by their dads (or lack their of).  This week in church a similar them was discussed, and I feel like it is one that we should pay attention to.

Do heroes need to be aggressive?  We have seen all throughout history that those that win the battles tend to be the biggest and strongest.  Super heroes getting matched up against a stronger opponent always seem to find that extra bit of strength or some new skill to best their opponent.  However, is that the way we want our kids to lead their lives?  Or should we focus on something more, like compassion?

Listen in as I discuss my Friday thoughts on this topic.

I know when I go to a movie or sit down with my kids to watch one at home, the last thing I am doing is trying to find parenting tips. However, this week I did just that.

I had recently promised our boys they could watch Shang Chi and the Ten Rings at home. We loaded up the movie and our boys were very excited to see all the incredible fight scenes. However, much of the movie focused on the relationship between Shang Chi and his father. Our boys noticed, too. They began to ask many questions. Soon our enjoyable movie night also turned into a lesson on parenting, revenge, and what we want out of life.

You can find various themes like this in many of the Marvel movies. Tony Stark and his working father. Thor and his high-expectation dad Odin. Starlord had a jerk galactic god like figure for a dad. He doesn't count. Yet many of these stories show how the father figure helped mold the hero to who they were today. Lots of pressure for a mid-30's Pediatrician dad sitting on the couch.

Listen in as I discuss my thoughts on this and what we can learn from it.

Do you ever have those arguments with your kid and you ask yourself "How the hell did we get here?" They are making no sense in their reasoning, or they possibly can't even put together a complete sentence. Maybe you have only heard yelling for the last 30 minutes and no actual words.

This is an example of your child's primal brain taking over. The authors of the book "The Whole Brain Child" refer to this as the lower brain. This is where all the base instincts kick in, and sometimes any form of reasoning can be thrown out the door.

Today I talk about how I COMPLETELY failed at recognizing this in my 5-year-old and how maybe YOU AND I can BOTH avoid it in the future.

This is the LAST WEEK to sign up for the Marriage and Money MD Conference coming this November 15-17. 21 physicians and physician spouses will be speaking about marital communication, investing, conflict resolution, intimacy, financial planning, and so much more. You will also be eligible for up to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 credits for attending! You can check it out and sign up for free.

Have you ever heard the idea of someone being more left-sided or right-sided when it comes to their brain? Have you ever asked yourself which category you fall in? What about your kids?

Lately I have been rereading (ie listening on Audible) the book "The Whole Brain Child" by Drs. Daniel Siegel, MD and Tina Payne Bryson, PhD. The book focuses on various parts of the brain and how we can utilize this knowledge to better understand our kids' responses to various situations and improve our own responses at the same time. In today's show, I give an example of a real life event that happened today and how I was able to bring my right-sided brain child back to the middle. But don't you worry! I also discuss how I FAILED to do this in another scenario - I mean we are Imperfect, right?

Have you ever had a long day at work, come home, and knew that things could either could very bad or very good depending on how you approached the evening? Today was a similar type of day for me. The week was long. We were on a tight schedule to make an event that night, and going straight from work to changing to heading out the door again, I was EXHAUSTED. But I decided to make a choice that led to an insanely fun evening. That choice was dancing with my wife and kids

This week I get to talk dad life with Dr Christopher Chiu. We both share several things in common, such as being a physician, dad, podcaster, and husband. However, we both tend to nerd out as well. Listen this week as we discuss his take on being a dad and doctor, how his father may have influenced his interpretation of being a dad, and find out which Hogwarts house he belongs to! Yes, we did discuss that as well.

Christopher Chiu, MD, FAAP, FACP is a Med-Peds doctor who has made his way to the Buckeye state after completing medical school and residency at Indiana University. He initially served for 4 years on active duty at Wright Patterson Air Force Base where he discovered his interest in medical education. After his separation from the military, he has continued to be active in Graduate Medical Education at the Ohio State University as the Lead Physician of the General Internal Medicine Clinic at Outpatient Care East and works with faculty development as the Director of Education for the Division of General Internal Medicine as well as the Director on the Program for Digital Scholarship.

He is nationally known as Chris “The Chiu Man” Chiu with his work as a producer for “The Curbsiders,” an Internal Medicine Podcast which routinely ranks in the top 3 of Apple Podcasts in the United States “Medicine” Category with more than 700,000 downloads per month. Have you been planning some big excursion for the last several years, only to be thwarted by work or family obligations? Was there something you wanted to do in medical school but never got around to it? Do those thoughts ever negatively affect YOU?

It is not uncommon as a physician to feel like we missed out on a part of life. In our 20's we are busy in medical school and residency while our college friends are out "finding themselves." We are behind on saving for retirement. We don't get to take the trips we wanted to. Then suddenly we find ourselves in our early 30's, career beginning, and possibly the start of a family. Although some freedoms may have been gained, new obligations have taken over. All of those desires and wants from 5 years ago still suddenly seem unobtainable, and in some instances can have a negative effect on our outlook about work and family.

Today I discuss my feelings about this and what I do to try to improve this.

I am happy to announce that I will be speaking at the White Coat Investor Physician Wellness and Financial Literacy conference this coming February 9-12, 2022. This event discussed everything you need to know about physician finances and how to better prepare for your future. I will speaking as part of their wellness track, which includes credit for CME!
For more information or to sign up, go to the WCI sign up page today!

I will also be presenting at the Marriage and Money MD Conference coming this November 15-17. 21 physicians and physician spouses will be speaking about marital communication, investing, conflict resolution, intimacy, financial planning, and so much more. You will also be eligible for up to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 credits for attending! You can check it out and sign up for free.

I recorded this episode Tuesday night, right after the FDA approval for the use of the Pfizer COVID mRNA vaccine for kids aged 5-11 years old. For some parents, this decision has been a long time coming. Many parents have been hoping for the chance to protect their kids with the use of a vaccine. Others are more hesitant on the decision, wondering if it is the right thing to do.

In today's episode I discuss my thoughts on the use of the vaccine at this age, the data used to make the decision, and why making these decisions as a parent can be difficult. Our boys are 5 and 8 years old, so this vaccine authorization hits home for me more than the other ones have.

If you want to read more about the data used in the vaccine trial, you can find it on the FDA website here.

This week I spoke about how envy negatively affects our parenting in various ways. Have you ever caught yourself flipping through other people's vacation photos, daydreaming about taking your kids to a fantastic place only to leave you feeling like your kids and family are missing out? Sometimes we think our kids want us to do these extravagant things for them on a daily basis to make life fun. However, sometimes our kids just want you to be you. As the great Roy Kent says, "Most adults think kids need to be constantly entertained. It's bull*. I didn't need a fing parade every day growing up, did you? Truth is they just wanna feel like they're part of our lives. Little idiots." Truth.

Social media, school, close friends, unknown neighbors, complete strangers - these are the people we compare our lives to. Sometimes we feel like we are doing better than most of them, and other times we are way behind them. How does this affect how we parent? How does this affect our daily lives? How does it affect our feelings?

Envy is one of those words most of us choose not to discuss. We would rather not reflect on how many of the decisions we make in life are derived from the feeling of envy.

Today's episode discussed the idea of envy, how it negatively affects our lives, and what we can do about it.

Do you do cub scouts with your kids, or have you ever thought about it?

I was able to spend this last weekend with both our kindergartener and 3rd grader camping out for cub scouts.  This was a first for our 5-year-old, but I feel like out 8-year-old is a pro now.   Scouts is such an incredible experience not just for our kids, but for us as parents as well.  This weekend we got to do a lot of fun things like build a tent, hike, play in the woods, and we even burnt a flag.  Confused?  No this wasn't some cult ritual.  If you don't know why, listen in to find out.

These last 2 weeks I have been off work and managing the full day to day in terms of household tasks - cleaning, cooking, getting the boys to school, homework, bedtime routines, etc. Although I knew I would be doing this (and although many of these things I was already doing before these 2 weeks), the sheer volume of now doing EVERYTHING has begun to add up.

Sometimes we don't always recognize the extent of what our spouse may do on a day-to-day basis. Even in 2-physician households, the mom still tends to do most of the household chores on a daily basis compared to the dad based on several studies. It is easy to forget how much our spouses actually do, and just as easy to forget to appreciate them for it.

Listen in today as I discuss this and more.

Earlier this week I discussed how we can relate the crashing of Facebook with parenting.  However, I feel the discussion of social media use and our kids is just as important.  This week's review show  has me discussing some quick thoughts about social media (and screen time in general) and how it affects both us as parents and our kids.

Unless you have been completely disconnected from social media or the news, you probably heard about the "crashing" of Facebook for roughly 6 hours on Monday. For some of you, this maybe meant nothing to you as you were at work and not checking up on your favorite cat memes or Marvel fan theories.

For others, the system being down had significant consequences. For starters, many people rely on Facebook for their online business presence either through sales, ad revenue, private groups, or other avenues. However, Facebook also is needed to run all kinds of other apps and systems like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus VR game systems, Pokemon-Go app, and other services. When the system went down, people who rely on these applications for monetary gain were most likely a little panicked. Imagine if it took 2 days to bring it back online? 3 days? A week? The fallout could be catastrophic for some of these businesses.

How does that apply to being a parent? In our lives, everything is connected in various ways. Work, parenting, marriage, social relationships - they all influence one another. When things are going well we rarely make the connection. However, when one of these systems fails, it can lead to a cascade of negative events.

So as a parent, find out what YOUR Facebook is in your life that everything else may be connected to. How can you improve that system in order to improve or protect those other systems. Listen in as I discuss HOW to do this in your life.

Have you ever said something to your kid, expecting them to understand the nuances of the phrase only for them to actually take it verbatim? "Dad, I gave you one second like you said." "Dad, I don't have any ducks to put in a row." "Dad, I tried to walk like you said but it still hurts. Why didn't it come off?"

Our kids are created to trust the words we tell them early on. Theta brain wave patterns in our younger children allow them to learn more readily and create more subconscious belief structures; however it does NOT help them realize that when dad says I will help them in a minute, it does NOT mean I am literally going to be done with what I am doing in 60 seconds.

How does the way we say things affect our kids? What about when they are older? And do our kids take our actions literally as well?
Listen in to hear my thoughts on this and more.

This week I talked about coaching our kids and how that can play an influential role in our relationship with them. However, have you ever had a coach that apparently had nothing but negative things to say to you? Doesn't really motivate you to play harder, does it?

This week I talk about my feelings on words of affirmation and how I can DO BETTER with this. We all can find areas in our lives with our kids where we can really improve this. I hope you listen in!

If you had asked me a year ago where I would be at this point in my life, I probably would have never assumed I would have a podcast releasing its 60th episode. I also would not have guessed that I would be giving talks at summits based on my passion for helping physician dads. That was not met. I was just a pediatrician in Omaha playing around with a blog all while admiring groups like Passive Income MD, Physician on FIRE, and White Coat Investor.

One year later, and here I am looking at my name on the White Coat Investor speaker list. I will speaking for Dr Brent Lacey's Marriage and Money Virtual Conference coming in November. Heck, I have somehow managed to keep a podcast going with at least weekly shows for the last 9 months (sadly the blog has not remained as regular lately).

What does this all have to do with mindset? Last year I did not IDENTIFY as a person who would do all of these things. That is until I told myself that I AM a person who does these things. Listen in to my recent thoughts about mindset and success in my own life.

As the new school year has started and we are about a month or so in, many of us find ourselves in a similar scenario as last fall - do our kids need to wear a mask at school? Many school districts around the country have approached this in very different ways. With these recommendations have come a loud voice of people who are strictly opposed to all forms of mask wearing; especially in our kids.

Today's episode is NOT about the science or arguments for or against mask wearing. It is about how our BELIEFS about wearing a mask may be significantly affecting our children's psyche. Listen in as I talk about how we may be directly and indirectly increasing their anxiety and stress just by being strongly vocal about this topic.

Ever heard the phrase "When you fall get back up?" I am sure you have, as many of us parents like to push it down our kids' throats when they want to give up too soon. But what about us as parents when we fail? Do we get back up and try again or let ourselves continue down the path of falling?

This week's Friday episode is devoted to my feelings about a specific situation that occurred between myself and our older son. See how I apply the message above to the situation - cause literally there was a bike involved. No joke.

Let's be honest. The role of mom and dad has changed over the last 30 years. Where dads used to be seen as the "worker" of the family while moms were the "home makers," these definitions have completely changed over the last generation. However, have our mindsets actually changed along with it?

Listen in this week as I discuss my thoughts on how the shift in the role of "dad" and "mom" has actually INCREASED physician parental anxieties rather than improve them. Confused? Seriously - take a listen.

In the last 2 years, people have been looking for an easy solution to the COVID crisis. This includes many talk heads on social media touting false treatments, poor scientific data, and just plain misinformation. However, these people have amassed tens of thousands of loyal followers who swear that everything they are being told is true.

The same thing happens in parenting. We are tired, frustrated, and annoyed by various aspect of parenting; many times this leads us to look for a quick answer to simply "make it all better." There are absolutely people out there that are willing to sell you the quick fix you are looking for, despite it most likely not being a quick fix at all.

Listen in as I comment on one of the final things Dr Brock and I discussed on this week's Wednesday episode.

We all recognize that being a dad in today's world is very different when compared to when our parents were our age. But how much has that changed for us as physicians as well?

Today I get to speak with Dr Brad Block. We discuss dad life as doctors, how gender roles have changed our job at home as dads, and generally just have a great time joking around. Tis is definitely an episode you don't want to miss!

Bradley Block, MD, is an otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon on Long Island, New York, where he lives with his wife and three young sons. He is a partner at ENT and Allergy Associates and he created the Physician’s Guide to Doctoring Podcast. It is a scintillating and engaging podcast, where he interviews physician and non-physician experts to help teach us what we should have been learning while we were busy memorizing Kreb’s Cycle. It is a practical guide for practicing physicians, physicians-in-training and all allied health professionals. Topics range from personal finance to politics to improving interactions with patients to what every doctor should know about different specialties. You can find him at PhysiciansGuidetoDoctoring.com and on Twitter and rarely on Instagram @physiciansguide. You can’t find him on TikTok, Snapchat, Etsy or on Pinterest and you probably never will.

He went to med school at SUNY Buffalo and graduated with research honors and went on to residency at Georgetown. He enjoys surfing (yes, there is surfing on Long Island), skiing (there is no skiing on Long Island), smoking meat, exercising, throwing his sons across the pool and finding any excuse to quote an 80s movie.

Once you realize that 90% of all the time you will have with your kids is in the first 18 years, it really puts things into perspective.

This week I talked with Dr Leif Dahleen from Physician on Fire. We discussed his decision to FIRE, how this affected life as a dad, and if he thinks it was the right choice for his family (you can probably guess the answer). During the discussion he referenced a blog post he had read discussing how much time you get with your kids. The topics got me thinking about my OWN 90% time table and how I plan to improve on it.

I am a part of several physician financial groups online. It is not uncommon to hear other doctors talk about how they want more financial freedom so they can take their kids around the world and expose them to other people and cultures.

What if that isn't an option for you? How do you still give your kids that experience without having to rack up all those airline miles?

Today's interview is with father Jeremy Myers. He is a campus staff pastor at West Virginia University. Part of his job is to help international students get accustomed with the American lifestyle. This includes basic things like hygiene items from local stores, getting groceries, working on English, and better understanding the subtle nuances of our way of life.

One of the GREAT things about this is that these students also get to share THEIR life customs, experiences, and rituals with not only Jeremy but his wife and kids. How many of your children get to learn the are of Chinese dumpling making, Middle Eastern cuisine styles, board games from across the world, and other scenarios in the span of a month? Probably not many. However, Jeremy's kids get to do this and more.

Listen in as we discuss how he feels this has improve not only the lives of the international students but also his kids'.

We also touch on the topic of autism, as one of his children has been diagnosed with this. This can be a sensitive topic for some, and I appreciate his willingness to discuss it with me.

As a dad, we are preparing to get back to school in 1-2 weeks. This includes getting new clothes, supplies, backpacks, and digging out our put away masks. That's right. Although it seemed like masks and school may no longer have been a concern for this school year, the rise of the Delta variant has one again disrupted the flow of normalcy.

Today's Friday review show focuses on helping our kids embrace the world around them, no matter what is going on. On Wednesday I talked with Dr Victor Mangona, and during the discussion he referenced a certain movie in which the father character is trying to raise his child during a time of war. Although the world around them is chaos and pain, the father chooses to describe the world around them as something positive, fun, and by no means NOT scary.

When our kids head back to school this year, how are you handling the topic of masks being reintroduced?

Imagine only getting to have one more day with your kids. How would you change what you do, what you say, how you act around them? How is that different than what you are currently doing?

This week I had the privilege to talk to Dr Victor Mangona, a radiation oncologist who focuses on brain tumors in kids and adults. Listen in as we discuss his unique perspective on being a parent and how he takes his daily work and applies it to being a dad at home.

Victor Mangona is the host of the 39.6 Live Finance Show on YouTube and Facebook, educating high income professionals in personal finance, investing, taxes, and real estate. This Wednesday was the last part of my series on the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner. I discussed how each lesson within the different regions of blue zones directly correlates with the 6 foundations of being a physician dad. One area that has greatly affected me is dealing with stress. Listen in today as I discuss my recent challenges and my plans to overcome it.

The last 3 weeks I have discussed the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner and how different people within these regions have managed to lived well into their 100's and remained healthy. In today's episode I am going to take everything I have learned from the book and apply it to the 6 B's of being a Physician Dad - your Brain, Body, Beliefs, Better-Half, Business, and Bucks. Each of these Blue Zones has a direct and indirect effect on ALL of these foundations. It is up to us to determine how best to utilize this information and apply it to our own daily routines to provide us with a longer and healthier life.

Next week, we get back into interviewing other dads like yourself.

In this week's Wednesday episode we discussed the Blue Zones of Okinawa and Loma Linda. During the discussion on Okinawa, the topic of the sweet potato was brought up and how he was the primary food source for the people of Okinawa up until World War II.

This topic got me thinking about how the root vegetable of the sweet potato and other yams and tubers have had an impressive inclusion into our lives as people.

Did you know the production of progesterone and cortisol was made more main stream thanks to a tuber in Mexico?

Even the great sprinter Usain Bolt always ate his yams (at least according to his dad).

Listen in to get my thoughts on how this food may be more than meets the eye (yes that was a dad joke focused on potatoes and eyes).

This week's episode is part 3 of a 4 part series on the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner. Today I discuss the locations of Okinawa and Loma Linda, focusing on their similarities and differences that yield some of the world's oldest and healthiest people.

Do you pay homage to your ancestors on a daily basis?

Do you drink at least 6 glasses of water a day?

Do you remind yourself to only eat until you are no longer hungry, rather than eating until you are completely full?

These are just some of the reasons people in these geographical regions are living longer and healthier lives that the average American. Listen in and see how YOU can make changes in your own life as a parent in reflection of these two locations.

In this week's Wednesday episode I discussed the Blue Zones of Sardinia and Nicoya. One thing I DIDN'T discuss is the water found in the Nicoya region and what it may be in fact the fountain of youth (or at least helping keep people healthy).

In today's world you hear commercials on the radio about getting soft water units - filters that basically filter everything out of your tap water outside of the base elements it is created from. We advertise this as a way to make your water healthier for you, reduce risk of calcium build up on your shower head, etc. However, WHAT IF that hard water actually helps you live longers?

Listen in to today's Friday Review to hear me discuss the data utilzied in the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner were I discuss the water situation in Nicoya, Costa Rica and how it may apply to YOU.

This Wednesday's episode was Part 1 of a 4 part series on the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner. I talked a LOT about food choices and how this may play a role in our longevity. How can we take what we learned this week and apply it to our own family?

One of the hardest things we are faced with in the United States is that we have been TOLD how to eat for a very long time. Breakfast foods are different from dinner foods. Somehow sugary cereals are considered part of your daily meal, but eating vegetables for breakfast seems foreign.

As I have talked about in other episodes, changing routines is HARD. It is hard for us as well as our kids. However, as DAD it is our job to help show our kids what it means to be healthy, what are considered healthy foods, and how to make health choices in our lives.

This week I start a new 4 part series on the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner. In the book he describes various areas around the globe where your chance to live past 100-years-old is significantly higher than the rest of the world. Why is that? What is it about these locations that heavily influences each individuals health and wellbeing?

In Part 1 of 4, I focus on what Blue Zones are (in case you haven't heard of them) and how they apply to being a dad. I touch on some common themes throughout the book and how you can start making changes to your daily habits NOW to get closer to your life long health goals.

Make sure to take a listen to Part 1 of Blue Zones today, and tune in this Friday for a Review Episode and next week for Part 2 which will focus on Sardinia, Italy and Nicoya, Costa Rica.

This week's Wednesday episode had me discussing my Father's Day this year, and why I think EVERY day should be Father's Day. Confused? Make sure to go back and listen to the episode.

Today I discuss how I relate Father's Day to going to the beach (I am literally at the beach the day this episode releases). We sometimes forget to just let the day happen. On Father's Day, we try not to stress about work and generally do what we want to do. At the beach, the same thing happens. Why don't we, as a culture, allow this to happen more often?

The next 4 weeks I will be discussing the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner. In this book you will see how almost EVERY one of the people in these blue zones leads their lives like they are at the beach - letting the day happen. doing what makes them happy, enjoying the moments, and simply living.

I hope ALL of you dads out there had an awesome Father's Day. This day only comes around once a year, so getting to enjoy it as an absolute must. For me, this day also fell around the date for our moving out of our house, our wedding anniversary, and our youngest's 5 year-old birthday. Needless to say, the day was there; much was attempted early in the day to help me feel special, however by the end it was business as usual.

Now, I am in no way bitter about this. Life is constantly moving, and our expectations adjust with it. However, what I am bitter about is the day in general. This goes for Mother's Day and other such holidays - hear me out here. I absolutely feel recognizing an individual is extremely important. HOWEVER, why do we have to choose a set day and time to do it? And why is it after that day has passed, things go back to the way they were without any changes in our mind set?

Today's episode, I discuss these things and more. I purposely left this episode to be 1.5 weeks out from Father's Day due to this thought process. I hope you take and listen, and let me know what you think!

This week's Wednesday episode focused on our BRAINS and why we CHOOSE to yell as parents. Yes, I said choose. It is a choice you make, even at the most primitive level. I also discussed ways to improve that response.

What about our kids? How can we help them stop the yelling (or at least reduce it) and improve quality of life at home? This week's Friday Review gives one strategy I recommend to many families (and should also probably do more myself).

Do you ever feel like you have become the "dad that yells?" You may have never wanted to be that type of parent, but sometimes the role found you. I get it. I was the same way. I never planned to yell at my kids. I was always going to be the reasonable one. Oops.

So why do we keep yelling when we know it isn’t working? Some studies have shown a chemical release in the brain when yelling swear words after being injured. Ever notice how yelling “Fudge!” just doesn’t give you that same response? The use of the swear word actually leads to the release of “anti pain” chemicals that decreases the pain you feel. In the same way we get the same response with yelling. Imagine a time your child did something that frustrated you enough to raise your voice. How did you feel before you yelled? How did you feel after? Sometimes the act of yelling leads to a quick release of dopamine or other substances to give a brief, if only for a moment, feeling of relief. But like any habit, addiction, or other action, the more this tactic is utilized the less effective it becomes, leading to more problems with parenting and how our children react.

In this week's episode, we talk about the above information and more on why we CHOOSE to yell as parents, and what can we do to help change that. I also previously wrote a blog post on the topic that you can find here if you are interested to read more.

This week's Wednesday episode focused on epigenetics and how it affects the health of our kids. However, epigenetics most likely plays a large role in our own health and how it changes over time. One of the topics that may be heavily influence by epigenetics are the Blue Zones. This week's Friday Review gives a brief introduction to the Blue Zones. We will dive deeper into the Blue Zones this July in a 4 part series.

What if I told you that the way you eat and exercise now has a direct affect on the health of your kids in the future? I am not talking about how they mimic your activities, eat the same food as you, or stay active because you are active. I am talking about all the things you do for your health BEFORE your kids are even conceived.

This is the science of epigenetics. The way you eat, the exercise you choose, and the choices you make NOW can affect how your genes are either turned on or off in your body, which can later be passed down to your kids. This affects their risk for things like obesity, cardiovascular disease, and developing type 2 diabetes.

In this episode I focus on one of the 6 B's of being a physician dad - your BODY. I will discuss what epigenetics is and the studies behind it. There are both mouse models and human studies showing these incredible influences on not only our kids but THEIR kids as well.

This week's Wednesday episode looked at early sports specialization and why it is not a good idea for our kids. I also did a blog post on it if you want to read more about the topic.

Today's review episode focuses on my personal THOUGHTS and BELIEFS and how it affected me during what should have been a proud moment during my son's baseball game. We can very easily trick our brains to feel a certain way, when we really should be looking to our kids on how to think in certain scenarios. Just don't tell my son I said that. He would never let me live it down.

With the summer months among us we are seeing multiple sports physicals every day in the office. Football, softball, baseball, track, soccer, and more – everyone is starting to get back to their respective activities as local restrictions allow. With this brings great excitement for our youth, as many of them had to miss out on this last summer. This also resurfaces the topic of our kids specializing early in a single sport to promote early acceleration in a set discipline. Although it may seem like a good idea, multiple research studies have shown that this tends to bring about the exact opposite scenario than what we are striving for.

In today's episode, I discuss the research behind why early sports specialization is actually NOT a good idea. I also discuss how our BRAINS tend to affect our desires for our child's early success, leading us to push them down a path of perceived success early in life. This mindset then prevents our children from learning that failure is actually a GOOD thing.

I also wrote up a blog post on this specific topic, which can be found here.

In this week's Wednesday episode I spoke with Dr Christopher Loo, MD, PhD, and his incredible story on reaching financial independence early in life and the freedoms it provided to him. As a physician dad, financial freedom not only takes stress off of work. but it also improves your life at home as a parent and spouse.

Today's review show I give a quick background on my own money mindset and how it has grown over the years. My financial knowledge has greatly increased both my BUSINESS mindset and BUCKS mindset when it comes to being a physician dad.

For some of us in medicine, reaching financial independence seems like a daunting task. We leave medical school in debt, are a decade behind our friends on saving money, and the interest on student loans begins to accumulate. This handcuff of financial discomfort plays a huge burden on not only our career choices but also the decisions on how much we work and its affect on our families at home.

Today's episode I interview Dr Christopher Loo, MD, PhD. In this interview we discuss how financial freedom not only improves our Business but also our Bucks in relation to the choices we make in our every day lives.

Dr. Christopher Loo is a surgeon, serial entrepreneur, investor, author, consultant, executive coach, and keynote speaker. He received his MD-PhD from the medical scientist training program offered jointly through the Baylor College of Medicine and Department of Bioengineering at Rice University. A member of the Valhalla AI Healthcare startup advisory board, where he directs digital strategy, Dr. Loo achieved financial freedom by the age of 29, and F.I.R.E. in 2016 through his multiple passive investment income strategies. After traveling the globe for a year, Dr. Loo started his consulting company in 2017 to spread awareness about the importance of financial literacy among the physician community. Dr. Loo is a 4x Amazon author including "How I Quit My Lucrative Medical Career and Achieved Financial Freedom Using Real Estate", has been a contributor to KevinMD (over 2k shares), SEAK 2018, 2020 Passive Income MD’s Leverage and Growth Summit, and the White Coat Investor Financial Literacy and Wellness Conference in 2021. Dr. Loo has his own monthly career success membership program along with a rapidly growing 780+ member private Facebook group “Financial Freedom for Physicians", and has been named by Board Vitals as one of the top 50 MD’s to follow in Instagram.

This Wednesday we discussed the tragic loss of a child with Dr Eric Larson secondary to an automobile accident. Do you know what the most common cause of death is in kids from 1-4 years old and 3rd leading cause in the adolescent age? Drowning.

Summer is finally here, masks are being taken off across the country, and everyone wants to finally party. In the summer that typically involves a pool, boat, rafting, or other water related sports. However, we sometimes forget that water play can lead to tragic consequences. Today's review show I give a quick discussion on this and a PSA to WATCH YOUR KIDS while partaking in the various water related summer activities. We just got through a major portion of the pandemic. Let's try to avoid any other tragedies.

One of the greatest fears of any parent is the loss of a child. We expect to watch them grow and thrive. The idea of their death seems almost impossible compared to our own mortality.

In today's episode I speak with Dr Eric Larson, MD. He is the host of the Paradocs Podcast and member of the Doctor Podcast Network. He is an anesthesiologist practicing in Michigan and Clinical Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine.

He is a father and husband, and a few years ago he and his wife had to live one of the worst fears a parent can imagine - the loss of a child in a tragic accident. Today we discuss how that affected him as a parent, physician, and husband. We touch on various subjects, including how to approach death with our kids as well as our colleagues at work.

After their loss, his wife, Dr Marcy Larson, decided to tell their story through the means of a podcast as well as interview other parents who have lost a child. Her podcast is titled Losing a Child: Always Andy's Mom. If you or someone you know has lost a child, or you are looking to understand what others may be going through during this difficult time of loss, her podcast is an incredible resource for this.

This Wednesday I talked about how our STUFF affects how we interpret our BUCKS and how that may influence our kids.  I am happy to report that we found a short term stay apartment between moving out of our current house and into the new build.

The other thing you may have noticed is this last week I released a podcast episode about the EUA for the Pfizer vaccine for 12-15 year olds.  I have done blog posts on these in the past, and did so again this time found here, but I wanted to speak the message, too.  I got a lot of great feedback early on, and I realized I have been dragging my feet in relation to talking about this topic more.

Within 24 hours I released a new podcast.  It focuses on how the COVID pandemic has affected our kids - not only their health but also their mental health, obesity, social isolation, and more.   Each week I will be covering various topics on Kids and COVID.  I would love for your to listen in and give me any feedback you may have.

You can find the podcast at https://kidsandcovid.buzzsprout.com or most of your favorite podcast players.

If you are like most parents and families, you have accumulated a lot of STUFF over the years. It is hard to avoid, as with every stage in life it feels like we need new gear to handle it. However, we do a poor job at getting rid of the old things and let it accumulate in various closets, drawers, or basements.

We are currently in the process of moving houses, however we just found out we will have to stay in an apartment for at least a month as our new house gets finished. That means all of the stuff from our 2-story, 4 bedroom home needs to get tagged, sorted, and stored somewhere while we venture into a 2 bedroom apartment.

We have allowed ourselves and our children get used to the accumulation of things. Everywhere you turn there is a toy, device, musical instrument, or other stimulation that represents the desire to simply buy more things. However, this move will FORCE us to reevaluate what truly is important to us, and hopefully we can leave a lot of the stuff behind.

This is an important aspect when you talk about focusing on your Bucks, one of the 6 B's of being a physician dad. The way you handle your money in terms of purchasing items greatly influences how your kids view money later in life.

Have you felt the need to buy the latest gadget? Smart phone? Peleton (no judgement)? How long until the joy of the purchase was gone and you lost the desire to use it? Are you making the right financial choices with your money when it comes to spending it on THINGS versus using it for what really matters in life - a better experience for you and your family.

This episode is a bit of a divergent episode from my normal dad talk. I try to keep detailed medical discussions to my blog whereas I utilize this space as my place to talk dad life. However, with the recent approval of the Pfizer mRNA COVID vaccine for the 12-15 year old age groups, I felt compelled to not only share the data from the studies involved but also my thoughts on the vaccine and if YOUR kids should get it.

If your prefer reading the information, I also released a blog post today on the topic found here.

What do you all think? Are you vaccinated against COVID? Do you plan on your children being vaccinated as well? What are your questions or concerns?

This week's Wednesday episode I spoke with Dr George Chaucer Hwang from Rockstar MD and his experiences with being a divorced dad and balancing work life with dad life. During that time, I made a critical error. I said something that was NOT actually FACTUAL . If you know me, you know that I typically try to learn about all the data and information before saying something. This time I screwed up. Here I am to fix it.

Have you heard that doctors have higher divorce rates compared to other specialities? Well not anymore. Listen in and see how we compare to the rest of the jobs out there.

Are you a physician parent and divorced? Being a single dad is not an easy task, let alone juggling that with the grueling schedule of being a doctor. One of my 6 B's of being a physician dad is your Better Half. However, sometimes that Better Half aspect is how you handle parenthood WITHOUT someone else there. Divorce, widowed, single parenting - all of these create a unique environment for our children and how they grow up to understand what a healthy relationship is.

In today's episode I speak with Rockstar MD, Dr George Chaucer Hwang. He is an anesthesiologist practicing in the Washington DC area and graduated from Georgetown University. He is a blogger at www.rockstarmd.com and recently started a podcast focused on creating Rockstars out of all of us in our own lives. You can hear more from him at his podcast The Rockstar MD Show.

Amongst the many things that he self identifies as, one of those is being a divorced parent. Dr Hwang was gracious enough to speak about his divorce, how it came about, and how it affects his ability to be a dad. He is extremely open about this, and I hope that no matter where you are in your relationships at home you listen to this episode and gain insight from his experiences. He also has some really cool side hustles that he talks about at the end of the episode, and you definitely don't want to miss out on hearing about those!

On a side note, I saw something around the 6:38 mark that I am going to speak on more on the FRIDAY show. Make sure to listen in!

This week's Wednesday show discussed our Beliefs and how we can help our children develop strong core foundations within their subconscious early in life. However, what if this was never engrained into you?

Sometimes we see our older children or even ourselves as a lost cause in regards to this topic. Maybe we feel like the chance has already passed us by. Being raised as a Christian, there are plenty of examples in the Bible of adults changing their ways and becoming better people in the end. For instance, Saul (a known Christian hater) later becomes one of the most devout Christians of all (now known as Paul).

It is never too late for us to change our core foundations and even our subconscious thought. But how do we do this? Today's Friday review dives into how we can bring more theta waves into our daily lives, allowing us to "be like children."

Were you raised in a family of faith? Does your current household follow specific religious practices or rituals that you hope to engrain onto your children?

This episode talks about how we develop our core belief systems starting early in childhood. I discuss the different brain wave patterns in kids of various ages and how to utilize those patterns to further strengthen your own child's belief structure.

However, beliefs are not only about your faith. It is how you talk about other people. Judgement versus acceptance. Right from wrong. Accepting other people's ideas even if they are different from yours. Empathy. ALL of this is derived from your core belief system and the subconscious mind.

This Wednesday I discussed topics focused on one of the 6 B's of the core foundations of being a physician dad - The Brain. Today's Friday review show focuses on utilizing a common tool that many life coaches use call the CTFAR method. I spoke about this on a previous blog post and using it for your kids if you want to read more about it.

Using this method, you can work on many situational scenarios at home with your own kids, which should aid you in becoming the dad you were meant to be.

Why do we do the things we do and act the way we act? It all has to do with how your brain interprets situations and responds to them.

Today's episode will focus on a more in-depth approach of looking at how your brain affects your ability to be the dad you always wanted to be. I will touch on routines, behavior responses, as well as how you can start to work on your own thought patterns in different situations.

This is not going to be an easy topic to discuss. If you currently struggle with embracing your imperfections as a parent, this one may kick you a little while you are down. Trust me. It still affects me frequently.

This is the first installment of the weekly review, an episode I plan to release every Friday discussing this week's topic.  I may leave a quick parenting tip, further discussion on the topic, or even more of a deep dive.  These will be somewhere from 5-10 minutes in duration.

This week I discuss the changes in the podcast.  The logo.  What is the Doctors Podcast Network?  Why am I obsessed with the lower case "i"?

Let's face it: being a dad and a physician in the 21st century is completely different to what the previous generations have gone through. Time at home is just as valuable as time at work. Being a parent is more about your interactions with your kids rather than your pocketbook. However, the resources out there are scarce on how we are supposed to improve these new expectations as fathers while as being a doctor.

When is the last time you read a parenting book? How about a book similar to "How to potty train your toddler?" Those books may help certain situations, however I don't think knowledge on potty training truly helps you master dealing with your screaming toddler in the grocery store line.

There is a lot more to parenting than the quick-fix titles out there. This week I dive into the 6 B's of being a physician dad and why I think these can all improve your not only your life at home but also your life at work. I will also quickly discuss some changes in the podcast and what to expect in the coming months.

Starting on Fridays, there will be a quick Friday Review show which will focus on this weeks topic. I may leave a quick tip for the week, closing thoughts on the topic at hand, or dive even deeper to what was discussed on Wednesday. I hope you take a listen and let me know what you think!

The idea of being able to work on YOUR schedule and making time for what matters is sometimes a foreign concept to most dads, especially physicians. We have long hours, sometimes working weekends and holidays, and may be frequently on call. This is something Dr Peter Kim has strived to take control.

Peter Kim, MD is an obstetric anesthesiologist practicing in Los Angeles and the founder of Passive Income MD, a brand dedicated to helping physicians achieve financial freedom through multiple streams of income. They serve their rapidly growing community through a blog, a podcast, online courses, facebook groups, and a national conference.

In addition, he is the founder of Curbside Real Estate, a company that connects physicians to the best team to assist them with the purchase of their dream homes.

You can find out more about Peter at his website https://passiveincomemd.com or his podcast.

Peter believes his ultimate mission is to help others create their ideal lives by equipping them with the knowledge, the mindset, and the resources to make it happen.

Through all of Peter's ventures, one tends to forget that there is a father and husband behind it all. We get to see the successes of Peter's businesses, but what about at home? How do he and his wife (who is also very successful within and outside her medical career) find time to balance their lives of work and home?

And is balance even the right word to use???

Do you ever feel like you don't have time to get everything done that you want to as a dad? Busy trying to manage work, home life, and everything in between?

This week's episode is with Dr David Draghinas, host of the Doctors Unbound Podcast, where he talks with various physicians about their interests OUTSIDE of medicine. Dr Draghinas recognizes that although becoming a doctor takes time and a lot of effort, it is NOT what defines us as a person. If you are interested in hearing the stories of these incredible doctors and what they do outside of their typical physician job, check out his podcast here.

Dr Draghinas has also recently launched the Doctors Podcast Network this year. Just as he found on the Doctors Unbound Podcast, there are many physicians out there who want their voices to be heard. Podcasting is an incredible resource for this, however it is not always easy to get started podcasting, let alone find a way to spread the news. The Doctors Podcast Network is a group of physician podcasters working together to help each other in all things related to podcasting. You can learn more by going to the website here.

Dr Draghinas and his wife are also interested in short term rentals, and have been very successful utilizing AirBnB and other similar platforms.

Remember when I asked about being busy and trying to make time for EVERYTHING you want to do? Well, this episode I get to talk to Dr Draghinas and see how he and his wife juggle all of these interests and more, all while working together as a team with their four children and making sure that family is a top priority.

If you know a dad or physician out there that may get some use out of this episode, please share with them!

Are you an up and coming father with concerns or fears of how things will change once the baby comes? You are not alone. Even doctors feel this way.

Today's episode is with Dr Andrew Tisser, an Emergency Room doctor from New York. He and his wife are both physicians and expecting their first child. Although all physicians get some experience in pediatrics during their early years, it never truly prepares us for having a child of our own. One of the biggest struggles new parents have is getting enough sleep. Babies will wake frequently for feedings, leading to improper sleep patterns for both mom and dad. However, even as kids get older their sleep schedules may not always improve. The same goes for parents. As our kids age, we seem to find more reasons to stay up late: work, hobbies, relaxing, etc.

But what if all those late nights are taking a toll on our bodies? Poor sleep patterns in adults can increase your risk for multiple health problems, including obesity, anxiety, poor immune function, decreased focus, and even certain types of cancer.

Last week I spoke with Dr Jonar de Guzman and his training in Lifestyle Medicine. One of the key components to this is sleep.

If you struggle with sleep, or if you want to know more about how you can make your sleep schedule better, give this week's episode a listen.

This week's episode is an interview with a fellow dad and physician, Dr Jonar de Guzman.

Dr. Jonar de Guzman, M.D., a board certified physician in Internal Medicine with Lifestyle Medicine certification, currently practices as a Hospitalist in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Jonar helps patients make drastic life changes toward healthy living and is a frequent speaker on Lifestyle Medicine, a relatively new field that focuses on evidence based lifestyle approaches to treat, prevent and potentially reverse chronic disease. As a doctor caring for sick hospitalized patients during this pandemic, he became inspired to promote healthier living to a wider audience and launched a podcast called the Glass Half Healthy. Dr. Jonar hopes to use his voice to challenge the way people think about health and inspire them to lead happier thriving lives.

In his free time, Dr. Jonar is a long time avid meditator, running aficionado, and enthusiastic advocate for plant-based nutrition. He earned his B.A. in Politics and Economics from New York University and his M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine.

In this episode I discuss being a dad through residency with Dr Jordan Frey. He is a plastic surgeon in Buffalo, NY. He and his wife had kids while he was working through the grueling hours of plastic surgery residency. Even though the idea of finding time to fit parenting into their already hectic lives was hard to fathom, they made it through utilizing teamwork and compromise.

Jordan is a blogger at https://prudentplasticsurgeon.com where he discusses financial education and his own journey to managing his finances. If you are a physician struggling with debt out of residency, a medical student preparing for what is to come, or simply want to learn more about personal finance, check out his blog.

Jordan also is the co-host of the Doctors and Dollars Podcast, which you can find on Apple podcasts or other podcast locations. Here, he discusses other finance topics with Dr Vijay Kini.

In this episode I discuss how time management can truly affect our effectiveness at being a good father and how we balance that between everything else we have to do. In medicine, work-life balance is not always an easy topic. When you throw being a good husband and father into the mix of being a good doctor, it is hard to find time to make it all work. Listen in to see how YOU can make changes to your daily life, finding time to do the things that are most important to YOU. This episode is a great one to listen to as a couple as well, as it may help you both determine what is most important about your time management and where you want to focus your energy.

I also have a blog post on this topic: https://imperfectdadmd.com/2021/02/04/time-manage-as-a-parent/

This episode covers the things I wish I knew when I was about to become a father.  There is a lot of information out there for prospective moms, but dads sometimes get left behind.  The information in this podcast covers the mindset required for being a parent (good for dads AND MOMS), what we can do to help at home (since most of us don't lactate), and what to expect during the first year of life.  As a reminder, this is NOT medical advice, and is meant for your education and entertainment only (as my adorable older son will tell you at the end of the show).

Throughout the podcast episodes I reference how the role of "dad" has changed into the 21st century.  In this episode I interview MY DAD, where we discuss how HE has seen the role of dad change from his childhood to his own experiences in fatherhood.  He was raised in a small town in Minnesota on a farm, later going to Medical School, joined the Navy, became an OB/GYN with a focus on both high risk OB and Reproductive Endocrinology, and through all of that became a dad of 3 kids.  Remember to subscribe and if you like the show leave a review!

You can read his previous thoughts on this role change on my blog at https://imperfectdadmd.com/2020/06/01/like-father-like-son/

Did you make any New Years Resolutions this year?  Were any of them related to being a parent?  This episode is a little raw, where I focus specifically on MY imperfections as a dad and how I plan to work on them.  I recorded this episode shortly before New Years Eve, and my goal is to listen to it upon launch a month later and make sure I am still on track with those goals.  As I said, this episode was a rough recording - no script or plan.  Thus, I chose to minimally edit it as well.  This is real life, and we don't always get to edit the things we want to edit - ok, I did take out the part where my wife walked in to ask me a question.  Love you, sweetie.

If you haven't made any plans yet on embracing your own imperfections as a parent, it is never too late.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be a parent of a child actor or actress?  In this episode I talk with my friend Justin Prince, who is a husband and father of two.  His daughter has been featured in commercials, movies, and currently is the lead role in the Apple TV series "Home Before Dark."  We discuss what it is like being a father in general and how their busy schedule affects what it means to be a dad to him.  We also discuss the importance of our spouses and continuing to be a team when it comes to raising your children.

This podcast is designed for the dad who feels like he is struggling with being a father, husband, or feeling confident in his sense of self.  This podcast will help you rediscover your purpose as a parent as well as what it means to be a dad in the 21st century.  In this first episode we will discuss embracing your own imperfections.  It is easy to bury ourselves in self doubt, and as soon as we start to dig that hole it isn't always easy to climb back out.  The tools I discuss in this episode are meant to help you start that journey of rediscovering your own purpose in fatherhood.

This episode is a quick synopsis on who I am and what I hope to accomplish.  As a pediatrician, people expect me to know everything as a dad and how to take care of my kids.  But when it comes to being a parent, there is a lot they don't teach you in medical school.  I hope you subscribe to learn from my struggles and experiences as a pediatrician, husband, and father.
