Ten days after the ascension of Christ and fifty days after his resurrection, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples on the day of Pentecost. Pentecost symbolizes a new beginning. It celebrates the unleashing of the Holy Spirit on the world and the empowering of the church to be the hands and feet in demonstrating the Good News. Today, as a church, we express gratitude for the faithfulness of Christ in fulfilling his promise to send another counselor (in John 14:16) and celebrate the work of the Spirit in renewing all of creation and professing its confidence, knowing the Spirit is active among us.--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wellingtonheightschurch/message
On this Mother’s Day, we give thanks to God for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms. Mothering is a gift to our community providing regeneration, healing, hope and community building. We recognize this day can be complex and filled with grief, disappointment and loneliness. May God’s Spirit be with each of you wherever you may find yourself this morning.A special thank you to all who celebrated and shared their time yesterday at the 4th Annual Mother’s Day Weekend Event - where we celebrated mother’s with free professional family photos and a meal from Carribean Kitchen Food Truck. A special shoutout to JSA for partnering with us to utilize their space and creating a community art project together! As we gather separate yet together in Spirit, I invite you to settle in, take a deep breathe as we pray together. This Prayer is written by Cole Arthur Riley, from their book Black LiturgiesGod our Mother,We thank you for grounding your character in the tenderness, protection and even sorrow of a mother. To know that no human experience - mother or child - is far from you gives us permission to uncover the particularities of how we were made to love and be loved. On this day, we’re reminded that we do not begin with ourselves. Our beauty, our pain, do not exist in a vacuum but are tethered to those who’ve come before us. We pray for the mothers who have protected us, who are weary, who have stayed, who have left, who are grieving, who are proud- understanding that the story of what it means to be a mother is not singular. And as children, would you remind us that it is okay to lament the ways we have not been loved well, while also celebrating the miracle and mystery of those who loved us fiercely. We are made of more than us. Help us to behold it. Amen. And now may we pray this prayer of Blessing over all those who are mothering in all of its diverse forms written by Pastor StephanieGracious God,On this Mother’s Day, we give thanks to God for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms.Bless the women who care for and nurture others by leading people and communities toward hopeLoving God, look gently upon mothers of newborn and young children, give them energy, patience and gentleness in these fleeting days of sticky hands, messy houses and ever flowing laundry.Bless mothers who are raising school aged children and teenagers, give them peace and joy in parenting in moments that seem both hard and wonderful all at the same time Bless mothers who from afar watch and wonder about their adult children, give them perspective and wisdom as their children make choices.Bless those who are stepping in as a mother-figure in numerous ways to those around them.Bless those who have chosen not to be mother’s and may feel shame or misunderstanding from our society.Healing God, comfort all those who mourn the absence of their mother today from death or illness or because of broken and challenging relationships.Comfort those who had hoped to be mothers, but have been unable to do so and those who continue to hope to become mothers.Ever present God, embrace and comfort those mothers who mourn over the loss of their own children.Gracious God, help us to recognize all the women who have guided us and loved us like mothers, shining forth as an example of the deepness of the love you offer to all people.Bless us and keep us today in that love and always. In your name we pray. Amen.See you next Sunday as we celebrate Graduating Seniors and Pentecost Sunday together as a community at the WHCC building. Your presence and encouragement is appreciated as we gather to pray for and honor the graduating seniors among us. Have a Happy mothers day and a great rest of your day!--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wellingtonheightschurch/message

On this Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day, a time that invites us to contemplation and confession, reset, and renewal, let us trust that during this season of Lent, God is with us to guide our imagination on how we can live out God’s call in our daily lives—both individually and communally. Pastor Tricia Hersey, author of Rest is Resistance, defines rest as a “Third space,” a temporary space of freedom to reclaim our belovedness as our society often only sees our bodies as mere machines.”The practice of Sabbath rest is a gift, reclaiming our and our neighbors' Belovedness is an act of resistance to the status quo, offering us a whole new way of ordering our lives to sustain in God’s good work for the long haul.
It’s a New Year! A time when we feel pressure to add new practices, habits or mindsets into our day-to-day lives. All too often we find ourselves unable to maintain these practices for the long haul which leave us feeling discouraged and burnt out. This New Year we are extending an invitation to step into vibrant rest together as a community to embody the spiritual rhythm of Sabbath. This six week series will allow time for communal gathering and embodiment of God’s invitation to regular rhythms of work, rest, and renewal.

We continue in our beyond charity sermon, series, looking at how can we have a more holistic approach towards charity?
As a church community, we know that God uses a multiplicity of means to reach people. This includes the Sunday Gathering. We want to lean into the new things that god is doing. While we believe that the preaching and teaching of the Bible is vital, it is not the only way God can reach people. We understand that all throughout history and around the world, the Sunday gathering experience looks different. We want to embrace this and lean into these different experiences. Join Pastor Keeyon Carter, Jenny Chadima, and Ann Lawrence for a wonderful discussion on the New Things Wellington Heights Community Church is doing to strengthen our neighborhood and community!
In the Beyond Charity sermon series, consider with us an approach to community development rooted in CCDA which transforms “you, them, and theirs” to “we, us and ours” which allows us to co-create holistic flourishing in our neighborhoods, cities and beyond. Today, Pastor Stephanie shares how instead of coming with a quick-fix solution, we need to hear and answer the call of God to put ourselves in direct, personal relationship with others to discover the felt needs of the people. The components of relocation, listening to the community and mutuality guide us unlearning our instinct to quick-fixes.
WHCC believes that Neighborhood Development is co-creating holistic flourishing in the Wellington Heights neighborhood, the wider community, and beyond. Join pastor Keeyon as he looks at Jeremiah 29:4-7.

Divine Reverberations expresses the power that each individual has to make an impact. We may nurture a plant or animal. We may develop science to improve our lives. We may radiate love to others or show gratitude for the small things that bring joy. Each of these acts, no matter how small, creates a ripple that carries through the universe. Artist, Christina Farrell, features two young people in the role of protectors of our future. The person on the left tends to a narrow-leafed milkweed – a plant that is endangered in Iowa and supports the life cycle of monarch butterflies. The person on the right holds a red-shouldered hawk, also endangered in Iowa. They each emit a radiant light to represent their unique spirit and the power of the divine that exists within each of us. This ancient spiritual imagery is paired with symbols of science (light, circuits, photons, etc.) to demonstrate how we can use our intellect to imagine new solutions. Community members contributed to the mural by adding a “galaxy” of images that represent special things that they care about. The community also added circles (symbols of interconnectedness and the divine) to the bottom section to represent the unity of the Wellington Heights neighborhood. We find ourselves in an in between space. In between now and when everyone has a vaccine. In between despair and the possibility of hope. This podcast episode encourages us to allow this time and space to lean into the in between, to consider what we may want to hold onto as we return to normal(ish) and to consider how we have changed individually and collectively because of our experiences this last year. As we do this we can move forward, together with faithfulness, grace and intention.

Blessing is a theme that stretches from Genesis to Revelation in the Scriptures. A prayer of blessing may be one of the most misunderstood forms of prayer. A blessing is not a prayer to be #blessed. Often in our culture we equate blessings with God’s favor or prosperity or abundance of some material thing.
A traditional Christian prayer of Blessing is actually quite the opposite. Instead of a prayer to be #blessed, a prayer of blessing is a form of prayer to display God's desire for our wholeness and for shalom (peace).
A blessing is a God’s gracious invitation and promise to always be with us. This service is an interactive time of prayer together blessing our homes. Every dwelling space deserves a home blessing no matter the size or location!

Lent is the time where we can consider how transformative love can seep into our lives more and more, so it may overflow in all we do. One practice to consider incorporating is a prayer of blessing, especially for those with whom we consider an enemy or in other words, someone with whom we are out of step with.

Call & Response Prayer:
Leader: Let us pray
L: The God of love opens our eyes to see the suffering of all our sisters and brothers
People: And we will see
L: The God of justice opens our ears to hear those who cry out
P: And we will hear
L: The God of healing opens our hearts to acknowledge and share our own pain
P: And we will bear it together
L: In the power of the Spirit we will know the truth
P: and the truth will set us free
L: Let us pray together
All: O God, You who created us all in Your image, who knew us all before we were born, affirm in us the value Your love has unquestionably given to us. As we embody our core identity found in you, may those who are dehumanized, either by the oppression of others or by their own actions of hate, be granted the permission to live in the freedom you offer—By Your compassion grant us what we need—the courage necessary to love boldly, the vulnerability necessary to trust, the submission necessary to heal, the conviction necessary to repent. We belong to You.
Keeyon Time of Confession
L: Let us confess our sins before the Lord. Respond together by saying, “Forgive us O Lord.”
L: For the times when we have been too consumed by our own pain or distracted by the tasks of life to see and respond to the deaths of those You hold dear,
A: Forgive us, O Lord
L: For the times our own hearts desire to hate those who cause us pain,
A: Forgive us, O Lord
L: For ways we have not welcomed You into our suffering and disappointment, so that we might forgive,
A: Forgive us, O Lord
L: For the ways we have caused You and others pain—for our own sin…
A: Forgive us, O Lord

This Lenten season, we are leaning into the practices of prayer, fasting and generosity. We invite you to utilize The Welcoming Prayer as a guide this season. The Welcoming Prayer guides us to bring our whole selves - our needs, thoughts, wants, emotions and circumstances into God's presence. The Welcoming Prayer is a helpful guide for us utilize to acknowledge our emotions, rather than avoiding them or trying to suppress them and to invite God’s presence and power into, so we can experience wholeness through the action and power of the holy spirit.
The Welcoming Prayer by Father Thomas Keating
Welcome, welcome, welcome.
I welcome everything that comes to me today
because I know it’s for my healing.
I welcome all thoughts, feelings, emotions, persons,
situations, and conditions.
I let go of my desire for power and control.
I let go of my desire for affection, esteem,
approval and pleasure.
I let go of my desire for survival and security.
I let go of my desire to change any situation,
condition, person or myself.
I open myself to the love and presence of God and
God’s action within.
Amen

Advent is a reminder of the love and kindness that Christ showed us. This Christmas, whatever it looks like for you, find time to dwell on the fact that you are loved and you are called to love others. Dwell on the fact that God’s love was an action, not just a feeling.
Consider journaling the vision of your work as an ambassador of God’s love, peace and justice. Ask God, what is the specific work He has called you to. Where might that work be now?
As you journal, take note of the emotions that arise in you. Sit with whatever comes and offer it to God.

Spiritual practice.
This week, seek to bring comfort to someone and take time to seek a small comfort for yourself - whether that is making a favorite meal, a quiet moment to yourself, or reaching out to a loved one. In these moments of giving and receiving comfort, recognize it as a sign of God’s love and give thanks for this particular moment of God’s love made tangible.

Join us each week during Advent season as we begin our Advent series Keeping Watch.
Each week we will include a spiritual practice in the description.
Here is the spiritual practice for this week.
A practical action we can do this week is to take a prayer walk around your neighborhood or city. As you walk, look for signs of God’s hope and presence. Remember that although we live in a broken world, God is near at work and that God has made so much beauty in this world.
Another practical action is to light a candle as a form of prayer. Watch as the light burns, it will recalibrate, change and settle. May the truth of this recalibration in the candle’s burning remind us of our own need to shift, find fuel, be challenged and have openness to the Spirit’s transformation.

There are so many people experiencing difficult life situations right now - death of a loved one, chronic illness, job loss, terminal illness, struggling with depression or anxiety, feeling despair from the racial oppression and unrest or maybe you know someone who has somehow been affected by the raging covid 19 pandemic or continuing to struggle in the aftermath of the derecho.
Right now you may be finding yourself in a unique position to love and care for someone around you who is hurting during this time.
Within life and ministry, from our mistakes, learnings and observations Pastor Keeyon and Stephanie have come up with a list of things to absolutely do and absolutely not do or say to someone who is experiencing pain and suffering.

If you want to love your city well you, must learn your city!
Here are steps you can take to learning and loving your city.

Know the history of your city. History is crucial to understanding our city - learn as much as you can from the time Native American's lived on the land to the "founding" of the city. It is so important to learn from history and the stories of those before us.
Listen and Learn. How we see the world around us is filtered through a variety of things including life experience, ethnicity, socio-econcomic status, gender, etc. It is important to listen and learn from someone with a different life experience.
Every city has its challenges. Instead of avoiding, lean in and seek to understand before being critical.
Contemplate why you live where you live. We all live where we live for a reason. Some of the primary reasons people live where they live are affordability, safety, schooling options. If we look at our cities at a macro level, they look incredibly diverse. Although, when we zoom in at a micro level, we are deeply segregated along race and class lines. Give some time to contemplate honestly, be authentic if race, socio-economic class and comfort have something to do with where you chose to live.
Pray for the restoration of individuals and the larger community.
Prayerful consider how you can use your resources to commit to supporting God's vision of the wholistic restoration of people and communities.
