Food is an integral part of our life, but the media and large-scale companies have made us questions everything we put in our mouth. This has caused food to be labeled as "bad" and other food as "good," but what does it all mean? This week we dive into food and talk about sugar and what we need to know to keep ourselves healthy.

After her own tumultuous history with food {withholding and then later in life, bingeing}, she learned how to deal with the core issues around her broken relationship with food. As a result, she felt called to go to school and learn to teach other women how to do the same. She graduated from the Health Coach Institute as a Holistic Health and Life Coach in 2018 and is the proud owner of Free 2 B Coaching. Why do we sleep? Nearly every living creature on the planet sleeps in some way, but why. Scientists have pondered this question for thousands of years, and an official scientific certainty has yet to be reached. That point, however, is moot. The fact is we need to sleep. Lack of sleep for prolonged periods can lead to numerous health issues, even death. And even though it is one of the most essential things we do, it is not so simple for many people. Join us in this episode as we explore issues related to difficulty sleeping and some ways to help combat that pesky villain, insomnia.

"Lana Walsh is a Sleep Coach who helps people overcome insomnia so that they wake up feeling rested and refreshed and ready to take on the day. Lana found out she had restless leg syndrome (RLS) as a teenager but did not get treatment for over a decade. This led to developing insomnia. For 30 years, she struggled to find the answer, trying “literally everything” without relief. When she was introduced to emotional freedom techniques (EFT, AKA tapping), she started on the path to recovery.

Tapping helped to reduce Lana’s stress and anxiety which allowed her to sleep better and get off prescription sleeping pills. Determined to continue this path, she began researching sleep where she finally found the answer to fixing her insomnia. She is passionate about sharing the secrets to overcoming insomnia and helping people get the same results that have transformed her life. She is a registered CBT-i coach and Conscious EFT Level 1-2 practitioner."

Whether it be sick or illness the question always asked is how long? When can I get back to ______ ? We want an easy answer and a straight line, but it is hardly ever the case. Five people with the same diagnosis can all have different experiences of healing. Today we talk about how recovery is far from a straight line.

Dr. Carly Hudson, D.C. attended University of the Western States and is a successful chiropractor who has been in practice for over six years. With additional certifications in massage, yoga, and exercise therapy, she helps hundreds of patients recover from injuries, illness, and chronic pain.

Dr. Carly speaks of important philosophical shifts in self care, including what it takes to move from a focus on disease management to true health care and the practical things we can do for ourselves instead of the constant search for the silver bullet.

As an infant, Dr. Carly suffered a life-threatening illness. She was left with “invisible handicaps” including balance disorders, muscle spasticity, and hearing loss. She had to begin again to learn how her body worked and so began her path of life-long learning and healing. With the gift of this injury, Dr. Carly has spent her life exploring how deliberate self care impacts our mind, body, and spirit.

He is currently living in Toronto. He was a marketing person and college prof (MBA, Marketing and Finance) for several years until the summer of 2009 came crashing down on him and forced him onto permanent medical leave. Something was causing him to, what they thought was, pass out randomly, but it was worse than that - It turns out his heart was stopping. He was clinically dead dozens of times. After sustaining multiple concussions, they eventually put in a pacemaker, which was great until the infallible pacemaker failed in 2013. And 2018, with more complications in 2019 and 2020.

In 2018, he learned about intermittent fasting, and his life hasn't been the same since. He attributes the large majority of his recovery to the healing powers of IF. He was able to reverse his T2 diabetes and some of its related issues and is no longer asthmatic, and his sleep apnea went away. Yes, there is still some perpetual anxiety, PTSD, and Post Concussion Syndrome, but it gets better every day.

Research on disease and conditions over the years has been done on one population and then extrapolated out. What does this mean? Until the 90s only cismen were allowed to be researched. This has led to gaps in knowledge and missing information concerning heart health in women, transgender, and non-binary individuals. This is dangerous and can lead to significant harm so tune in to hear the difference. This may save a loved one or your own life.

You might not have experience with a chronic illness but you most likely have experienced burnout, stress, anxiety, and/or depression. Dr. Kevin Payne joins us this week to discuss his journey of living with a chronic illness and depression. This is an inspiring episode that can be used to help when you think you're alone or need a push to try something new. So go jump out and plan and listen to this episode.

Dr. Kevin Payne lived with a recurrent mystery illness for more than 30 years. It was only correctly diagnosed a65s multiple sclerosis in 2006. During that time, he spent a decade supporting a wife through advanced cancer. In 2019, despite his wonky legs and sketchy central nervous system, he decided to reclaim a lost childhood dream, face his fears of a body that increasingly doesn’t want to cooperate, and become a serious skydiver. He’s earned all the licenses and logged 600 jumps since. As a professional researcher, He’s also devoted the last decade to original research on the question, “how can we experience a great life, even when we’re ‘sick?’” Then he wrote a book, founded a company, and built a curriculum training those diagnosed, loved ones and caregivers, and medical professionals about the many, surprising consequences of life with a chronic illness that no one prepared us for.

Within the past decades, a whole new form of post-surgical healing has emerged – Post Surgical Manual Lymphatic Drainage (PS-MLD). While there are many therapists trained to perform standard MLD for health and wellness purposes, they are not necessarily skilled in PS-MLD. To add to the confusion, there is a contingent of therapists who have created their own techniques to use post-surgically and those techniques completely oppose the long-studied, evidence-based, proven MLD techniques introduced by Dr. Vodder and others. So join us today as we discuss how PS-MLD can benefit you.

Our guest today is Mr. Kevin Rebman, owner of Return to Play Institute, a massage therapy clinic with locations in St. Paul and Edina, Minnesota.

As a clinical manual soft tissue therapist, Kevin treats teen and adult clients who: are seeking better performance in their activities; may be recovering from surgery or trauma; or they just want to receive regular, targeted bodywork to maintain peak performance.

Mr. Rebman holds a Bachelors Degree from UW-Green Bay, a Masters degree from Aspen University in Colorado, and a Clinical Massage Therapy degree from Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minnesota.

In addition to his clinic time, Kevin spends many weekends working as an EMT on the sidelines of youth performing arts and athletic events. He enjoys the intricacies of performance bodywork and celebrates when his clients achieve their personal goals!

This week we explore trans athlete's access to sports medicine. When athletes do now effectively communicate with their sports medicine team, they can put themselves in danger. They may avoid their trainer because of fear of being targeted. Let's listen to Em walk us through what their research found.

Em is a certified/licensed athletic trainer, currently working at Lake Erie College in Ohio. They also research and educate on LGBTQ+, particularly trans, inclusion in sports medicine. Their first study, “Transgender Athletes' Experiences With Health Care in the Athletic Training Setting”, was published in the Journal of Athletic Training in December 2020. Being a non-binary/trans AT and a former college athlete themself, Em hopes to use their own voice and platform to create structural change and give other trans/non-binary athletes and younger clinicians the resources Em wishes they would have had.

Vicky, founder of Private Yoga Online, fell in love with yoga as soon as she started practicing in 2014. It is after just a few minutes during her first class, that she knew she had to integrate yoga and its philosophy to her daily life. Living in what we could say is an accelerated world, Vicky needed a break from it all. It is yoga that has since then, been a way for her to find calm while working mentally and physically. Let’s put it this way, yoga showed up at the right time for her. Later in 2018, Vicky decided to continue her yoga journey with a 200 hour teacher training. Her mission today? Bring the yoga to you, share her passion and knowledge of the practice and its philosophy, teach the importance of finding alignment in yoga postures and lead students to the well-being that comes from a balanced physical and mental body.

DESCRIPTION
Sugar is a drug. It’s not going to kill you as fast as heroin or cocaine, but eventually, it can directly contribute to a shortened lifespan. Our body reacts to sugar in a similarly addictive way, but unlike hard drugs, sugar is readily available on every shelf in every grocery store and gas station. Join us this week as we explore ways to end our relationship with sugar in order to live longer and better.

Dawn is a certified health coach, founder of Dawn Nava Coaching, and creator of the 7-Day Sugar Slay. But not long ago she was also a closet sugar addict and depended on the sweet stuff to get through her days. As a result she was overweight, borderline depressed, moody, had ZERO energy and moved through each day in a fog. At the time she didn’t realize that all of this misery was directly linked to her sugar habits. When she discovered that eating sugar was throwing off her hormones and padding her belly with extra layers of fat, she knew it was time to reset her diet. After slaying sugar, her life turned around. She had the energy of her 25-year-old self. Her moods leveled out, she was able to focus, and she was easily fitting into her clothes again. It’s now her passion to help other women over 40 who are suffering like she did to ditch sugar and discover the power, freedom, and transformation that come with living a sweet life without the sweet stuff.

The internet and social media have been great for information and education. They have also been equally destructive in teaching people, especially young people, that they need to look a certain way to be healthy. While certain levels of excess body fat do have direct correlations with increased risk of diabetes and heart disease, most people who are “over-weight” are still perfectly healthy and only society is saying otherwise. Nearly every person has some experience with toxic relationships. Whether it be personally or via a close friend or family member. Movies and T.V. often do not show an accurate representation of a person after child birth. What is accurate is how they are often treated by medical professionals in that they give birth, and then they are sent out the door with a nice bill and just enough education to know that shaking a baby is bad, that’s it. Postpartum is often associated with the word depression, but it simply means any point after child birth, and the affects are not only mental. It’s always easier to just say nothing, right? Just let the awkward situation pass and move on. But what if this keeps happening, with many people and many different situations? Perhaps we have not presented the proper expectations to those around us in regards to how we wish to be treated. While it may be uncomfortable at first if only allow ourselves to say what needs to be said we may be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome.

Dr. Sarah Reck is a physician, a mother of 4, and a fitness junkie!! She is an Anesthesiologist in Milwaukee, WI where she works full time practicing as an anesthesiologist. She is also a mother of 4 beautiful boys, ages 2, 4, 7, 9. Juggling work and motherhood is no small feat (especially with her crazy hours), and one of the ways that she makes sure she is able to take care of everyone else is by taking care of herself. She does this by practicing self-care in the form of exercise.

Fitness has taken on different meanings in different phases of her life and currently she feels like she has come full circle. She was a runner at the onset, but her fitness routine has taken on different forms as the demands of motherhood have taken over. For years, the best time for her to exercise was early in the morning or during kids naps and due to this she started doing more at-home workouts. As her kids are now getting older, she was training for the New York City Marathon in Nov, 2020 which sadly was canceled.

Last, but not least, her professional expertise in Anesthesiologist and personal interests in helping mothers live their best lives have recently merged as she created a course to educate women about pain control options during labor and delivery with an in-depth look at epidural anesthesia and anesthesia for C-Sections. Throughout her 14 year career in medicine, she has placed thousands of epidurals and has been dumbfounded how little GOOD education and information is available about this topic. She has become increasingly frustrated with the fact that women are very educated about the labor and delivery process, but have little education about epidurals. Thus, she set out to create a course filling this void.
The course has now been released and is available for purchase at https://www.sarahreckmd.com/new-page-73

It’s only been in the last decade or so that the idea of health and wellness should equally include mental health along with our physical health. So sadly, our financial health may take even longer to really be put in the spotlight as something we should be paying more attention to. Our financial health is super important as can have a direct effect on our mental wellbeing through stress as well as our physical if we do not have the funds to keep ourselves healthy should we get sick or injured. On this week’s episode we examine a few simple things that can we can all do to begin our journey towards financial freedom.

To say that we are living in an unprecedented time would be the understatement of 2020. Well, maybe a close second to “it’s just the flu”. This pandemic has shined a light on the worlds medical professionals and has brought to the forefront some previously unmentioned specialists. The responsibilities that these professionals have to those who have been impacted the most by COVID cannot go overlooked. Menopause is part of life that will affect almost every person on the planet at some point or another, either directly or indirectly. While it can be detrimental in some cases, it is thankfully very manageable in places with access to modern medicine. This episode we hope to clear up some misconceptions about menopause and hopefully provide some previously "unknown" management options. They could simply be unknown because your provider might not know they are options. It takes time and energy to stay up to date on the best care and that is hard to do. It is important that you're aware so you can advocate for the right care.
They include:

Traditional Hormone Replacement
Bioidentical Hormone
Nutraceuticals - Over the counter supplements
Off Label Medication
Acupuncture

Pain is all in your head. No, literally. Pain is simply electrical signals that are interpreted by our brain. We think we feel pain in the parts of our body that hurt when in reality our brains feel the pain. There is the real science behind the idea that emotional stress can manifest as physical stress in our bodies. Health concerns are far too often not all-encompassing to include mental and social stressors. These stressors are uniquely human and often compounded. Women’s professional football has been around longer than some NFL and most D1 college players have been alive, yet it is still largely unknown to most football fans. What these athletes may lack in notoriety and million-dollar contracts, they more than makeup for with grit and heart. When women’s football is mentioned many people automatically assume that the sexiest “Lingerie League” is what is being referred to. The WFA and other leagues are very much not this. These athletes train hard and play harder. Except for the noticeable size difference these football players put on a spectacle more than comparable to their male counterparts.
Jodi "Moose" Rehlander is a 22-year veteran of women's football. She was a member of the 1999 WPFL "No Limits" inaugural season and has spent her entire career playing and working for the Minnesota Vixen. She hopes to continue coaching and mentoring players after her time on the field is over. Outside of football, she is a software and data analytics consultant as well as a freelance graphic designer and an active participant in community theater and other fund raising efforts. She lives in the Twin Cities suburbs with her husband Jon and two children, Andrew and Cassandra, without whom life might be less busy but definitely less joyful.

While there are many systemic issues preventing certain populations from advancing in this world, most of the time our greatest enemy is ourselves. Most of us will constantly tell ourselves that we are not good enough and that we are actually “faking it till we make it”. This line of thinking can be detrimental to our progress. We often need to remind ourselves that we are doing something for a purpose and that we are good enough.

There was period of time in our country where a male physique that slightly resembled melted ice cream was considered trendy. In the sports world, this length of time is referred to as “a cup of coffee”, because it is shorter than the time required to consume a mug of brewed caffeine. Sadly, even though people wised up and the attraction is mostly gone, many males still struggle with the infamous Dad Bod. As men age and as life happens, sometimes things like exercise and healthy eating are replaced with second helping plates piled high with stress and processed sugar. In this weeks episode we learn about an interesting support system for males to learn how to lose the Dad flab.
A few years back Mike was a fat, lazy alcoholic executive, eating crappy food but believing he was clever and successful. Deep down he knew his kids, family and career deserved better, so he made the decision to clean up his act and get healthy. Now he is passionate about helping his mates do the same and live the life we all deserve.

Our body doesn’t feel pain. Our, skin, heart, head and back to not “feel” anything. Nerves in these areas take a stimulus and our brain interprets that signal as something that influences our body to react in a certain way. To assume that our thoughts about something will have no impact on our physical performance is asinine. The greatest athletes in the world exercise their minds just as much as their bodies as they understand they symbiotic relationship between attitude and performance. Thinking that this world, especially the U.S., is not racially upside down is bafflingly ignorant. The fact that the black community has been able to accomplish the limited amount that they have despite the systemic racism that is still rampant in this world is astonishing. The world is against people of color and yet they persist. It’s heartbreaking to think how much further along we could be as a species if we simply treated people based on their character and not their color.
In this week’s podcast we speak with Jenessa White, a black woman and engineer who is working to promote black-owned business and products through the Amplify Black. Her goal is to get these business owners to grow and thrive by reaching customers online in a world that refuses to help.

What is an ethical chiropractor? This is an important question to ask before starting care. There are 100s of techniques and each office has a unique feel. So how do find the right one for you?
An Ethical chiropractor is one who practices using scientific evidence and is patient centered. Many people have had a bad experience with a chiropractor or are scared to go to a chiropractor because of pseudoscience that is spread. If you follow the guidelines set out in this podcast you will never risk a bad experience again.
Where to start?

Get a referral from a friend or family member

Check your insurance, but some chiropractors are using private pay to your benefit.

Check the Doctor’s credentials

Do a little research on what is wrong

Visits the website and do a quick audit, and confirm

Treating only musculoskeletal conditions

Does not emphasize supplement sales

Does not encourage long treatment plans

Does not make unsupported claims of the power of an adjustment or vertebral subluxation

Call a few offices to get a feel

Red Flag Warning Signs to stay away from

Repeat x-rays with no evidence to support its use (i.e. medical condition or injury)

Months of endless care without re-examination

No improvement or even worsening does not result in reexamination or referral elsewhere

Pre-sold treatment "packages"

Pressure to sign up for or attend maintenance or preventive care programs

There will be no guest this week, this is a topic that Dr Mac is passionate about. Making sure patients know how to advocate for themselves.

All through chiropractic school, the message was to help as many people as possible. I am limited by the size of my clinic, the location, and physically how many I can see, but a podcast has nearly unlimited reach. I want to empower people to live healthy, happy lives.
