The Quackalope Podcast - Board Games: Recent Episodes

Quackalope

The worlds most aviary focused board game podcast. Indigenous to the eastern shore of the United States, the horned Quackalope can be spotted where board games are played. The ill-suited ornithologists, Jesse Anderson and Jan Bigas, discuss board games on a weekly basis in an effort to catch the elusive bird. Through long winded conversations on mechanics, context, theme and game design, the hosts strive to discover the reason of the Quackalope's fascination with the hobby. Join us at the table and don't forget your binoculars.

Devon invites Justin Gary—designer of the popular Ascension deckbuilding game and CEO of Stone Blade Entertainment to sit down and have a conversation!

In this session, we talked about Justin’s journey from student of law to master of games. His path toward design was unique given his professional success as a Magic: The Gathering player that pivoted toward a career in design and entrepreneurship. While he still is pumping out content for Ascension (including an upcoming miniatures game to celebrate the original game’s ten-year anniversary), some of Justin’s most intriguing work actually involves his masterclass course of Think Like A Game Designer. He’s guiding designers-to-be through all of the obstacles he encountered along the way and provides accessibility, accountability, and reality to the design dreams of those who take the class.

Sit down with us on the banks of the board game pond and let’s have a conversation.

Everybody roleplays as Jesse but some ducks are inimitable and some coins should be left untossed! Today, in Shelf or Sell, Alex raids again (arguably) with Raiders of Scythia, Jan really likes rondels with Praga Caput Regni, and Will dusts off the board game years with Lords of Waterdeep. Afterward, for the Medley Minute, Jan celebrates Alex’s feature on the BGG creator spotlight, Alex can’t help but bring up more Zombicide, and Will talks shop with the first con coming back this year. Later, in On the Radar, Will’s wallet gets really thick with the Tussie Mussie expansion, Jan finally reads a book with Paperback Adventures, and Alex moonlights as a bard with The Witcher: Old World.

Today we discuss Funfair, designed by Joel Finch and published by Good Games Publishing. It’s a lightweight tableau-builder that takes the mechanics of its predecessor Unfair and distills it into a more accessible, short game. Players act as managers or architects of budding theme parks and must construct the most epic attractions in the hopes of drawing guests. With a tight coin economy and quick rounds, it’s hard to ignore how easily you can get this to the table. Have you played Unfair? Well, it doesn’t matter either way because this game stands on its own.

Today we discuss Red Rising, designed by Jamey Stegmaier and Alexander Schmidt. Published by Stonemaier Games, it’s a hand-management game based on the popular books series by author Pierce Brown. In a dystopian society bound by strict Color-associated castes, there is endless conflict and it will be up to the players to determine which Colors they ally with to create the most effective and highest-scoring hand. Does this slick card game measure up to the books and what’s it play like for people unfamiliar with the Red Rising trilogy?

Today we discuss Air, Land, & Sea by Arcane Wonders designed by Jon Perry! In Air, Land, & Sea, two players participate in a series of Battles, with the objective to control two of the three Theaters of war. At the start of each battle, you will be dealt a hand of six cards. All cards can either be played face-up or face-down. Playing a card face-up triggers an ability, while face-down cards don’t. Players take turns playing Battle cards one at a time, until all cards have been played, or one player decides to withdraw. Victory points are awarded at the end of each Battle based on the results, and the first player to 12 victory points wins the war! (Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss Cosmic Frog by Devious Weasel Games designed by Jim Felli! Cosmic Frog is a game of collection, combat, and theft on a planetary scale. Each player controls a two-mile-tall, immortal, invulnerable frog-like creature that exists solely to gather terrain from the Shards of Aeth, the fragments of a long-ago shattered world. Throughout the game, you're free to keep to yourself and focus on harvesting at your own pace...or you may attack other frogs and try to take lands directly from their gullets. The game ends when the Shard is stripped of all harvestable land or when a Splinter shatters it. When the game ends, the player with the highest valued vault wins.(Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss Sleeping Gods by Red Raven Games, a game that combines campaign, rich narrative, worker placement, tableau building and action efficiency! In Sleeping Gods, you and up to 3 players become Captain Sofi Odessa and her crew, lost in a strange world in 1929 on your steamship, the Manticore. You must work together to survive, exploring exotic islands, meeting new characters, and seeking out the totems of the gods so that you can return home. The goal is to find at least fourteen totems hidden throughout the world. Like reading a book, you'll complete this journey one or two hours at a time, discovering new lands, stories, and challenges along the way. Each new location holds wild adventure, hidden treasures, and vivid characters. Your choices affect the characters and the plot of the game, and may help or hinder your chances of getting home! (Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss Santorini by Roxley Games and designed by Gord! Santorini is a re-imagining of the pure abstract conceived over 30 years ago. It’s is an accessible strategy game, that’s simple enough for all age levels while aiming to provide gameplay depth and content for hardcore gamers to explore. The rules are simple. Each turn consists of 2 steps: Move, and Build. A player will win the game if any of there builders reaches the third level. Santorini features variable player powers layered over an otherwise abstract game, with 40 thematic god and hero powers that fundamentally change the way the game is played. (Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss Russian Railroads in celebration of it’s recent reprint announcement. We sit down with acclaimed designer Jonny Pac (e.g. Coloma, Lions of Lydia, Fistful of Meeples, Merchants Cove) to figure out what exactly fuels this powerful locomotive. Russian Railroads is a worker placement euro where players are competing in an exciting race to build the largest and most advanced railway network. In the game each player has a personal board, with space for factories, and 3 rail tracks (to 3 different cities). The central board has (almost) all the locations for placing workers. Each location requires 1-3 workers (of one player; played all together). Each round ends when all players have passed on placing/using workers. Then, score VP for each track and factory line. After 7 rounds the game ends; most VP wins! (Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss our favorite tabletop MOBA with Steven Wooley from Team Covenant. Skytear is a competitive card-driven miniatures skirmish game published and designed by PVP Geeks. In the game players uses a draft system that supplements regular deckbuilding, where players pick heroes from four factions. Then, using these heroes, players compete to take control of the lanes and lead the minions there to assault the enemies towers. In doing so, they will win one of the three victory conditions selected at the start of the game, or by overwhelming your opponents. (Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss two unique party games: Yura Yura Penguin designed and published by Ryoko Yabuchi and Ghost Blitz designed by Jacques Zeimet and published by Zoch Verlag! Yura Yura Penguin is what you’d expect if you’d put Uno, Jenga and adorable penguin artwork in a blender. The game is simple: on your turn you’ll take whatever action was played by the previous player and then play a card with a matching color. You’ll need to be careful though, each card action will require you to place pieces on a constantly growing tower of fowl, ice and makeshift platforms. The player that topples the iceberg, loses! Ghost Blitz on the other hand is all about pattern recognition and speed. Every round a player will reveal a card that shows multiple caricatures which correspond to objects on the table. The goal is to identify either what color and or object is missing, or what object is represented exactly. The player to guess first and grab the object gets to keep the card. Whoever has the most cards when the deck runs out wins!

Today we discuss bevy of Roll & Writes with Jay Cormier founder of Off The Page Games and designer of games like Akrotiri, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Junk Art and many more! Roll/Flip & Write as a genre are (usually) small and portable games that involve players interacting with some sort of randomizer (e.g. cards, dice, ect.) and marking the results on sheets of paper or erasable boards. Another common factor is that marking choices made in previous plays limit a player's marking choices in future plays. In the episode we talk about all things surrounding Roll & Writes, but we focus specifically on That’s So Clever, Patchwork Doodle, Cartographers, Welcome To and Rajas of the Ganges: The Dice Charmers. We cap the episode off by breaking down the history of the genre and what innovations influenced its modern day implementation.

Today we discuss Merv: The Heart of the Silk Road designed by Fabio Lopiano and published by Osprey Games featuring Sarah Shaw from Board Games In a Minute! Merv: The Heart of the Silk Road is a tense economic game charting the rise and fall of the greatest city in the world. In Merv, players are vying to amass power and wealth in the prosperous heart of the Silk Road. Through careful court intrigue, timely donations to the grand mosque, and favorable trade deals, players attempt to redirect as much of that prosperity as possible into their own pockets. Meanwhile, beyond the city walls Mongol hordes approach. If you help construct the city walls, you give up on precious opportunities to build up your own stature, but leave it unprotected and you will burn with the city. The player with the most victory points by the third year wins! (Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss Dune Imperium designed by Paul Dennen and published by Dire Wolf featuring Jeremy Howard from Man Vs Meeple! Dune: Imperium is a game that finds inspiration from the Dune legacy, both the new film from Legendary Pictures and the seminal literary series from Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson. It uses deck-building to add a hidden-information angle to traditional worker placement. You start with a unique leader card and ability, and you’ll acquire cards and build your deck, your choices will define your strengths and weaknesses. Cards allow you to send your Agents to certain spaces on the game board, so how your deck evolves affects your strategy. Unlike many deck-building games, you don’t play your entire hand in one turn. The cards you play and keep in your hand will determine where you can go on the board, what you can purchase from the market and your strength in the conflict phase. Whoever reaches 10 points, and is able to keep them when the game ends, wins! (Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss Tidal Blades designed by the Eisner Brothers and published by Druid City and Skybound Games featuring Jamey Stegmaier from Stonemaier Games! In Tidal Blades 15 years have passed since the Great Battle, a cataclysmic confrontation that spawned a rift into where creatures dwell. Now a tournament is being held to find heroes that can stop the onslaught of monsters that are once again spewing forth! You and up to 2-5 players will compete to become a Tidal Blade, the elite guards of the island realm. To win, you’ll need to succeed at challenges being held throughout multiple arenas and rise above the competition. Each day you’ll send your hero to take actions on the different Locations and to undertake Challenges. Challenges can only be completed in matching locations and will require a push your luck dice system to accomplish. Completing Challenges and fighting monsters will advance your character in four traits further improving your chances on future turns. Each Tidal Blade will be judged at the end of the 5 rounds based on the Challenges they have completed, the level of each of their Traits, their standing on the Champions Board, and the monsters they have fought. The winner will be named “Tidal Blade: Hero of the Reef!”

Twilight Imperiumis a war and 3X game of galactic conquest in which three to six players take on the role of one of seventeen factions vying for galactic domination through military might, political maneuvering, and economic bargaining. At the end of a turn, players gather in a grand council to pass new laws and agendas, shaking up the game in unpredictable ways. At the end of every turn, a player can claim one public objective and one secret objective. As play continues, more of these objectives are revealed and more secret objectives are dealt out. Play continues until a player reaches ten victory points. (Description provided by the publisher.)

Today we discuss Root by Leder Games, a game of woodland might and right, where you’ll command one of multiple asymmetric animal factions vying to take control of the region. It’s no secret that we are big fans of this dynamic war game with a deceptively welcoming exterior. However, in the spirit of Played It Once, we decided to jump back in time and retell our first experience with Root and how the game and our tastes have evolved with it. In addition, we give some advice on how to teach Root to potential new players and what pitfalls to avoid.

Today we discuss Petrichor by Mighty Boards and APE Games, an area-control, abstract and action selection game. The players create, manipulate and move clouds with water droplets, and then rain those droplets onto a modular board. Each of these areas will require certain conditions to be met before players can score them. The etymological origins of the word “Feudum” stem from Medieval Latin feodum*, which was borrowed from Old French feu, which was borrowed from Frankish fehu, which stems from the Proto-Germanic *fehu. Now, why are we mentioning all of this? Well because today’s game sometimes feels like you’re going down a scholarly rabbit hole. Feudum, by Oddbird Games, is an economic sandbox euro of hand and resource management for 2-5 players. Your goal is to take advantage of your position within 5 guilds at the most opportune time to be victorious by game end. Unless, of course, you starve, get sidetracked by sea serpents or develop an unhealthy interest in fermented grapes. Sound familiar?

In today's episode of Played It Once we discuss mythology, dexterity games and crocodiles. Just not the kind you might be expecting. Flick of Faith, by Awaken Realms Lite, is a crokinole-esque dexterity and area control board game where the goal is to spread your gospel far and wide by flicking prophets into different territories and denying other deities the chance to share theirs. As you can tell, it’s a historically precise recreation of mythological prophesying. Right?

What’s that pleasant smell in the air? Well, whatever it is I’m sure Alex is responsible. On Shelf or Sell Jan contemplates the question “does it feel good to be bad?”, Jesse has a revelation and Sender decides if Robinson Crusoe is worth the effort. In the Medley Minute the spice calls, Twilight Imperium adds 4 more hours to its playtime and Alex talks about something truly refreshing. Then, as always, Jan breaks all the rules in On The Radar and Jesse just can’t stop talking about tables. All that and more in this weeks episode of The Weekly Quack!

"Admit it: You're a wretched old fool! Your past transgressions will haunt you for an eternity. There's no hope for you here. Either jump now or be shuffled off this mortal coil." What an inviting premise, eh? This is how today's game, Vindication by Orange Nebula, begins! You've been thrown overboard and abandoned by your past friends and shipmates. You wake up stranded on a new land and saved by a kind soul that offers you a shot of redemption. Maybe a chance at a new life is exactly what you needed to better yourself...or is it?

Jesse is asking for help on what to do with 7th Continent, while Alex is brandishing his swords in a duel for the ages. On the other hand, Jan get's a tad too overexcited and invites a feathery friend onto the episode. In other news, seems like board games have once again pierced the public zeitgeist and some chilling info on Frostpunk. Later in On The Radar, our hosts discuss what it takes to reinvent jenga, the latest in video game adaptations, and Lizard Wizard. All that and more in this weeks episode of The Weekly Quack!
