Political polarization did not start with the 2016 election — it’s been gaining momentum for over 20 years.
But with the rancor and divisiveness that has been on display in recent years, polarization may have reached its worst level in the United States since the Civil War.
Today, many believe that their political adversaries are not simply misguided, but that they are also bad people whose ways of thinking are both dangerous and incomprehensible. As Charles Krauthammer once noted, “Conservatives think Liberals are stupid, Liberals think Conservatives are evil!”
The Pew Research Center, which has been measuring political polarization in the United States since 1994, recently found that the average partisan gap has increased from 15 percentage points to 36 points.
The United States is disuniting. We’re becoming two Americas angry with the other and distrusting our opposites’ basic humanity and good intentions.
This degree of civic rancor threatens our democracy and it’s a trend we must reverse!

A man whose been associated with Frederick County Fire and Rescue for many years is stepping down. Deputy Chief Chip Jewell announced that he’s retiring at the end of December. He started his career as a dispatcher with Frederick County Central Alarm in 1972, and also worked in communications for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. Jewell also worked for 20 years in the insurance industry as an agent and insurance education instructor.

On May 28, 2019, the Frederick County Council finalized Resolution No. 19-09 establishing the Frederick County Charter Review Commission. The Charter Review Commission was tasked to review the Charter and make recommendations for any adjustments. On June 26, 2019, the first meeting was held. The Commission was asked to complete their work no later than February 28, 2020. Their purpose was to ensure that the Charter is clear in meaning, addresses the needs of contemporary government, and remains a functional, working document that effectively outlines the framework for the efficient operation of County government.
The Council selected seven residents of Frederick County to serve as members of the Commission, including one member from each Council District. The members of the Commission are as follows: District 1- Paul Gilligan, District 2- Walter Olson, District 3- Stephen Slater (Chair), District 4- John Daniels (Vice Chair), District 5- Dr. April Miller, and At Large- Lisa Jarosinski and Dylan Diggs.

In short, recovery high schools are secondary schools designed specifically for students in recovery from substance use disorder or dependency. The staff of recovery high schools most often includes administrative staff, teachers, substance abuse counselors, and mental health professionals that each play a critical role in supporting their students. Additionally, recovery schools provide support for families learning how to live with, and provide support for, their teens entering into the recovery lifestyle.

The GO TEAMTraining Program involves a full weekend of classes, typically running from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day. (See Class Info page) The schedule of classes includes real-life training at multiple venues to expose dogs and handlers to a variety of situations. Dylan Diggs, as a member of the county charter committee, talks about potential changes to the Charter form of government. was raised from birth in Mount Airy, Maryland.
He stands on the shoulders of his parents, Eric and Denise, who instilled a spirit of hard work and curiosity that drives him today. Eric and Denise grew up and met in Baltimore in the 1950s and 1960s. Eric grew up on one of the rougher streets in the city. He knew that education and hard work were the keys for him to advance beyond his station. Driven to get out of Baltimore, Eric actually hitchhiked from his home to study at the University of Maryland.

Richard Griffin has served as the director of Economic Development for the City of Frederick, Maryland since 2002. An accomplished urban planner and economic developer with 22 years of planning and economic development experience, Richard has worked at the city, county, and regional level. His previous assignments include having served as the executive director of the Downtown Frederick Partnership, Program Manager of Comprehensive Planning for Loudoun County, Virginia, Senior Regional Planner for the Appalachian Council of Governments, and on the staff of US Representative James McClure Clarke (11th NC). Mr. Griffin holds degrees from Western Carolina University and Clemson University. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Downtown Frederick Partnership, Fort Detrick Alliance, the Frederick Innovative Technology Center, Inc., and the Frederick County Workforce Development Board.

For the past six years, Donnie Lambert and his daughter, Jessica, have orchestrated a now-beloved downtown Frederick tradition. Each November and December, they contract with the city to provide carriage rides through the streets, rotating the shifts between their four Percheron draft horses and two Belgian draft mules.
This year, though, he’s been bewildered by a new presence downtown: a group of animal rights activists who say they want the carriage rides shut down. Michael and Stacy Boyer are married vegans and lifelong Frederick residents who have four rescue dogs. They are also staunchly opposed to Lambert’s carriage rides, describing them as animal abuse and exploitation.

Endowing Our Community's Future
Supporting families with children is one of the current needs in Frederick County as determined by the 2018 Human Needs Assessment Report. Many of today's families with children are in a precarious position facing an uncertain future.
What will be our most pressing needs as a community in ten, twenty, fifty years and more? Homelessness, substance use disorder, parents who can't feed their children, lack of public education? It's impossible to know, yet preparedness is key.
What is possible is that you can make a difference and be part of finding solutions that ensure Frederick County's future is bright. You can be the influence for change.

The organization Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership was founded several years ago to help a special group of children in Frederick County, Maryland. Started by one person, it quickly grew to be an organization supported by ‘mid managers’ from a variety of non-profit agencies in Frederick, Maryland. Our belief is that children of incarcerated parents are a group of children who lack a voice of their own. Our work and our mission is to give them such a voice in the community, in the schools, and in their family. We are proud to say that we are now an official non-profit organization.

Lori Swerta is an author who delves into political fictional mystery. Based on the true story of an 1859 murder that occurred in front of the White House in Washington D.C. Philip Barton Key, son of Francis Scott Key, carried on a love affair with the young, beautiful wife of Congressman Dan Sickles.
