The Messiah's kingdom is eternal, and while it may have been prophesied thousands of years ago and fulfilled in Jesus 2000 years ago, his kingdom is fulfilled in us today. This isn't some distant dream or something we hope may come someday, but a place where we get to invite people in today. Where the poor and marginalized are welcomed, regardless of status or stature. This is a kingdom of hope. This is a place where the light breaks through the darkness. Isn't it cool to think that the light of his kingdom breaks into this world through us!?

We need to learn from Paul that not everything God does in our lives is to be shared publicly. The fruits that come out of the experiences we have with the Lord benefit other people way more than the experience itself.Every encounter we have with God doesn't end there; it is to transform us first so we can be used by Him to transform others!

Pride will never let us be vulnerable. Pride will try to keep this inside, never asking for help.Paul for the first time, open up his heart and share that he has an issue. An issue he is not able to solve! Yes, he is planting churches, yes he is operating in the power of the Holy Spirit but he has an issue, a thorn in his flesh.

Today we need to learn to turn from our prideful ways. Each step on the path of spiritual formation brings us closer to peace as the image of Christ is renewed in us. We have to get rid of pride, to become humble, to even desire a pursuit of Christ's image in us. Never forget that pride is not only exalting ourselves, as in shouting how great we are, but also when we refuse to do something God has asked us to do because we're scared of failure or what others might say. As we become humble, exalt God, and serve others, we are ushering in God's topsy turvy Kingdom. A place where love and justice reign supreme!

If our church is to flourish, we must remember what He is asking of us. It goes all the way back to the kind of church He wants us to be. The kind of church that will live and be alive! God can turn dry, empty spots into places full of life and hope, just like he strengthens us when we’re feeling down. God heals and guides us along a safe path, where no harm can touch us if we stick with Him. This journey is all about moving from sadness to joy, a kind of joy that sticks around because of what Jesus has done for us.

We all need to step up and walk this path of holiness. Let's be there for each other, trust in God's promises to refresh the barren parts of our lives, and make a positive impact on our community.

In this message on Isaiah 58, we explore what God truly desires from our worship. Moving beyond mere ritual, as we become holy as God is holy, we are to embody justice, mercy, and humility in our daily lives. This message challenges us to transform our acts of worship into actions that reflect God's heart for lovingkindness and justice, urging us to live out our faith as a tangible expression of divine love and service.

In this message we explore the profound concept of God's "Canopy of Glory." Discover how God offers not just physical shelter but a transformative sanctuary amid life's storms. Learn about the divine protection provided by His presence, symbolized by a cloud by day and a flaming fire by night, which guides and guards us on our spiritual journey. We will dive into the significance of finding refuge under God's canopy, where we are not only shielded from the enemy's flaming arrows, but are also transformed by His grace.

In Isaiah 6:8-13, God has tasked Isaiah with delivering a message to Judah. It's a message they will hear, but not understand. It's a message that hardens their hearts. This is their response to God, a persistent unfaithfulness and refusal to heed previous warnings. They have reached a point of no return due to their continued disobedience. Only a remnant will remain, but that remnant is their hope for a future with God. I believe the message for our church is a warning to not become like the nation of Judah.

We have the opportunity to change and repent. If we choose not to, then God has shown me that our church will die. Will we be open to God's transformative work? Or are we hardening our hearts? Will you join me in becoming the change God has called us to be?

We must be careful that the significance of Easter not be lost on us because it's precisely into this void of understanding that the message of Easter speaks. The cross, an instrument of brutal execution, becomes the focal point of the ultimate sacrifice. Jesus' death doesn't just echo the sacrifices of old; it transcends them, transforming our understanding of what it means to give and what it means to receive. In this act of divine surrender, we find the profound reversal of our expectations—where giving up one's life means the saving of many, where the ultimate sacrifice brings the ultimate gift: life in its fullest.

How did Isaiah respond when God called him? Immediately and confidently. "Here am I. Send me!"

After encountering God's holiness, confessing his sin, and being cleansed, Isaiah is ready to accept God's mission…whatever that is! If you pay attention, this is a personal and communal call. Isaiah is not just offering himself but is a representative of the people he belongs to. Our call to service is for and about us all!

Hosanna. It’s only one word of the song, but when you stop to listen to that one word and think about it, it sure does pack a punch!

It means we are lost sinners.

It means we can’t save ourselves.

It means we need this God on the donkey to save us.

It means that He is the only answer to our prayers.

This one word tells us what Holy Week is all about. It’s about Jesus coming to save sinners.

Recognizing that we are created for God's glory is not the end but the beginning of being redeemed. It's the groundwork that prepares us for the deeper work God desires to do in us, transforming us into the likeness of Christ, in whom the fullness of God's glory is revealed.

The journey ahead, then, as we begin to explore the themes of salvation and transformation is about allowing God's glory to be fully manifested in our lives. It's about being transformed by His grace, being saved from the power of sin, and being continually renewed to reflect His image more clearly. Let us hold fast to the knowledge that our ultimate purpose and highest calling is to glorify God — and to enjoy Him forever.

The call to repentance and return is as urgent today as it was in Isaiah's time. This urgency is not meant to induce fear but to awaken hope, highlighting that our return to God is both a personal and communal journey toward embracing His promises.

As heralds of this call to repent that leads to the good news, we are called to spread the joy of God's coming glory, amplifying our own joy in Him. Let this message of hope and renewal resonate within us, compelling us to trust in God's unfailing promises.

How are we responding to God's lavish care? Are we producing justice and righteousness, or have we settled for less? The call is clear. We are urged not to receive God's grace in vain but to let it transform us, making us agents of His justice and righteousness in a world desperate for both.

Isn't it awesome that we are the people of God's Vineyard today?! We are grateful to have the book of Isaiah, so we can learn from those who have gone before us and did not meet God's expectation of them in the Vineyard. God wants us to be faithful and choose him. Our responsibility in His Vineyard is to live lives that are pleasing to him.

Just before the birth of Jesus there was a sense of expectation and hope. People were waiting and wondering. They felt like something wonderful was about to happen. The Scriptures had promised the coming of the Messiah, and rumors were rampant that he was coming at any time. He was going to turn the world around and deliver Israel from all her enemies. He would usher in the kingdom of God. But if those same people, who were so high with expectation, had gone to a backyard stable in the town of Bethlehem one starry night, they might have said, “That’s it? All that hype for this?” But actually, in this case, the reality was greater than the expectation. No one could have guessed how this child would change the world. No one could have imagined the impact he would have on world history and the change he would make in people’s lives. Not even Mary fully understood the difference the child she was carrying would make.

In this message from the first few verses of Isaiah, we learn a vital lesson: even when we lose our way, God's kindness can bring us back and heal us. Isaiah's message was for Israel long ago, but it speaks to us too. It asks us to see where we might have drifted from God and reminds us that God's grace is always ready to welcome us home. This sermon starts our series by showing us the power of admitting our mistakes and letting God's love heal us.

Every year, I like to take a look back at what we have gone through as a church and then turn our sights towards the future. I think it’s necessary to do that because as we go through something, we aren’t as aware of any changes that might be going on. It is this same principle that I use in my own family. I see my kids every day, so even though they change every day, I don’t necessarily see that change unless I look back and see how far they have come in a year.

What joy can we find in Advent today? Jesus’ coming, both his birth and return, will be marked full of things that we will certainly find occasion to be joyful about. Everything bad and wrong is made right. The world, and its upside-down ways, are turned right. Perhaps, most importantly, we find redemption. We started by talking about how amazing Christmas is and how unbelievable it is that God would make himself human. Let your knowledge of those facts fill your Christmas with joy this year. When you give gifts, remember that we are the recipients of the greatest gift of all!

On a very practical level, this Advent journey of love is about God’s love for us being reflected through us to others. In our own way, we are preparing the way for the return of Jesus, by spreading the good news of the Kingdom through love. In reality, that’s not something we can do—or do for long—on our own effort. It must come from the source of love, and it can. The Living Bible nicely paraphrases Peter’s description of that: “Now you can have real love for everyone because your souls have been cleansed from selfishness and hatred when you trusted Christ to save you; so see to it that you really do love each other warmly, with all your hearts” (1 Peter 1:22, TLB).

Hope is about waiting, but that waiting involves a commitment to being present in our journey of obedience. Alert, sober—these are words of expectation and active anticipation. The good news in all this is that wherever you are on your journey, it’s okay—keep following God’s light.

Sure, we have four weeks of Advent that lead to Christmas, but that is human-created calendar timing, not God’s timing.

Advent is not about finding all the answers or checking all the boxes. It is about preparing. You just have to show up and be willing to follow God’s lead. Wherever you are, you are not too late. God’s timing is perfect. And He wants to fill your heart with hope for the ultimate healing and life in His Son.

That is a reason for hope that will fuel your journey through Advent and far beyond.

Repentance is more than just a step in the process of salvation, it's the essence of a transformed life in Christ. Luke 15 talks about the joy in heaven over one repentant sinner which is a powerful reminder of the significance of repentance. We must embrace repentance as more than a simple ritual, but as the first step in a journey towards spiritual renewal and a sanctified life committed to surrendering to God.

Repenting leads to being fruitful, but being fruitful doesn't mean our relationship with God is based on what we do; it's about faith being manifest in our daily actions. Just as planting a fruit tree starts with a single seed, so does our journey towards fruitfulness begin with a commitment to turn towards God...away from sin and self. But this is just the beginning. To nurture a fruitful life, we must engage daily in nurturing our spiritual growth. We must repent and consistently seek the power and guidance of God's Spirit, allowing Him to lead, guide, correct, and empower us. It's in this ongoing process that we grow deep roots and bear the fruits that reflect God's presence in our lives.

When we get to the place that we're broken, humbled, forgiven, and sanctified, it is then that God will hear our prayer and heal our land. If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. If my church in Lantana, the ones who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will bring revival to their neighborhood.

The kingdom of God has nothing to do with being religious. Arbitrary boundary markers might make us feel better about ourselves, but are they from God? What if we got up every morning and said, God, let your kingdom come in me? Let me get caught up in your song and what your Holy Spirit is doing today. God, keep me in the rhythm and flow of your grace. There was a place where this happened, where a community got caught up in God’s rhythm, living in God’s kingdom. This is what God wants from us still.

There are two types of love. One that finds value in things that are nice and shiny. That looks to someone’s exterior. But there is another love that loves the ragdolls. It loves people like you and me. It makes up there come down here. This is what the Kingdom of God looks like...real love!

The Kingdom of God is awesome! There was once a community where people who were far apart came together. The rich shared with the poor, slaves and free people came together, and people respected each other. This really did happen. Racism sexism and hatred began to get healed. Can God do it again? Can God do it here? Our mission is to bring the kingdom of God to the world around us. Not a program, not to be comfortable, but that God’s kingdom comes from up there to down here. When people discover what this kingdom of God business is all about, they will do anything to be part of it! Love will break out…for God, for each other, for our community!

Let's make this our prayer this week, “Lord, may up there come down here.” Let what goes on up there go on down here.

We must learn to live daily in God's presence by seeking Him. Do we desire to be with God, or are we hiding like Adam did? Once we draw close to God and live lives that please Him, we will find we can live in God's glory instead of just talking about it. What a valuable lesson we can learn from the children of Israel. Let's turn toward God and desire to see His glory.

From the Israelites, we learn the importance of trusting God for our daily bread. We must stay connected with Him from day to day. John Wesley preached a sermon called "The Duty of Constant Communion." He promoted communion so often because he believed it was a means of God's grace for us. He wrote, “it is the duty of every Christian to receive the Lord’s Supper as often as he can…” precisely because he believed that when we receive Christ, our lives are transformed. He is our daily Bread.

Can we follow Him? With the children of Israel, he told them to stop crying and take care of it. You do your part…stretch out your hand and walk by faith, and I’ll do my part…divide the waters. We are connected to the most powerful source there is. Will we keep our eyes on God and trust enough to follow Him?

I’m thankful for the lessons in scripture. There are many things we can learn from the Israelites as God led them through the wilderness. We need to first remember. Remember everything God has done for us, remember where we have come from, and remember God’s promises to us. We also learn the importance of patience. We can’t rush God or do what we think’s best. We must follow God and be patient, especially as we remember where we have come from and where God wants to lead us.

Fathers, parents, none of us know how much time we will have left with our children. Are we using our time as wisely as Joseph did? Do we encourage our families at every opportunity, set an example, and provide for their needs?

Being a parent is more than only providing a check for their families to live. This is indeed part of it, but there are other provisions we must take care to do. Are we:

Showing Affection?

Setting an Example?

Giving Godly counsel?

Giving Laughter and warmth?

Giving Loving Concern?

May we take an example from Joseph and learn to provide for our children and families in every way.

We must remember that the Word is our offensive weapon and is given to us so we can defeat the enemy. Did you know that 62% of the population doesn’t believe the devil exists? As we conclude this portion of our series on Ephesians dealing with spiritual warfare, I want to make sure we know he’s real and he’s nasty. However, we don’t need to be scared. We only need to pray in Jesus’ name and take authority over him. This is only possible if we are familiar with our weapon, the Word.

As we prepare for the battle, we must be dressed for spiritual victory, protected from the enemy's fiery arrows. There is no magic pill. There is no easy way out. When it comes to spiritual warfare, it's real and we must be ready for the fight. There is a battle for your soul and God is giving you all you need to stand firm and fight the enemy. We don't have to do it all by ourselves, but we must do it.

It's no mistake that this teaching comes on the heals of Paul's teaching on relationships. Satan knows that relational conflicts can cause some of the most damage a person can endure. He also doesn't want us to bring Jesus into it because he knows when Jesus gets involved, he will be defeated.

Never forget we are fighting for souls. Not only ours, but the souls of every one of our loved ones, people in our lives, and everyone in our community. Let's pull our belt tight and do the work of preparation for the battle that is to come.

We should always strive for the attitude of the disciples on that first Palm Sunday: willing to do as Jesus commands and easily point to him as king. There is a warning for us in the attitudes of the others. We need to be cautious with having the attitude of the crowd: caught up in emotions and always trying to force what we think is God’s agenda. We should also avoid the pharisaical attitude. Don’t let fear rule your life; fear of others or what might happen to you for confessing Christ. We must be bold in announcing that we follow Jesus.

The cross is not foolishness, it is our salvation. There may be a lot of things that we don’t understand, but remember, God accomplished that which was impossible when He went to the cross and died for our sins and was raised to life again. He did for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves.

If we are to sum up the message of Easter, it is so much more than the fact that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He did indeed die for our sins, but that is not all. He was raised again! Paul says, “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins” (I Corinthians 15.17). His death and resurrection started something new, that makes no sense until you follow Him. You see, when we say yes to Jesus, we enter into a new way of life. One in which he is the source, the strength, the example, and the assurance.

Everything within the earth that is ordinary atomic matter lives in what is called a tardyon realm. No matter how hard we try, we can never achieve the speed of light. The reason is, according to Einstein, that the faster we travel, the more dense in mass we become and therefore it would take an infinite amount of energy to move an infinitely increasing mass. This has been scientifically proven.

On the flip side, everything that exists traveling above the speed of light is known as tachyons. As they attempt to slow down to the hallowed speed limit, their masses inflate uncontrollably. Ultimately, an infinite amount of energy would be needed to slow one all the way down to below the speed of light. And that’s not all. For tardyons and tachyons alike, time exists. It flows one way for us tardyons and the opposite way for tachyons. Whereas for light itself, time slows to a complete stop. (Michale Guillem, Amazing Truths).

There is only one who transcends space, time, and light…Jesus Christ. Can the darkness drive out the light? No! But light will drive out the darkness every time. Will you choose to live in light or darkness today?

Are we beginning to see how the life of a believer is simply lived different? CS Lewis said, “We may give our human loves the unconditional allegiance which we owe only to God. Then they become gods: then they become demons. Then they will destroy us, and also destroy themselves. For natural loves that are allowed to become gods do not remain loves. We must be careful not to misunderstand that we are saved through these things, or that by doing them we are automatically considered Christ followers. Once you have received Christ, truly received him, and grasped the glory of the gospel, your life will be changed. Paul reminds us that we should not go back to the old way of doing things. We can't go back to our old habits and hang-ups. We must take off the "old self" and put on the "new self." The call of Jesus is to leave our old, sinful ways behind and cling to the new life he is offering us. Will you choose Jesus today?

We are wrapping up our fifth year of ministry here. When we moved here, the kids were 11, 8, and 6. Fast forward 5 years and Morgan is a sophomore in high school, Mati is in 8th grade and Cayden started middle school! There's something bittersweet about the independence that comes with age.

I want to look back over the last year and remember where we have been and how much God has moved us in 2022. I also want to take a peek at what I think God wants to do in 2023. As I look through all that God has done in 2022, I am blessed…and impressed…with all we have accomplished with His help. I am more excited than ever about our future.

This can happen if we are disciplined and don't grow complacent. May we approach every day of 2023 hungry for a deeper relationship with our Lord and savior, Jesus.

So what's the lesson for us today? Harkening back to the beginning of this letter, there is a marvelous mystery: God's grace which draws us all together as one. The gospel message flows from the love of the Holy Spirit and the grace of God that we experience through Him. This means that our responsibility as members of the ekklesia is living humbly and in unity under the power of the indwelling Spirit. In other words, the Holy Spirit fills us and enables us to live a life of love, creating a church where everyone is willing to serve rather than be served.

We often talk about a "relationship with God." This might be too simple a phrase. God doesn't just want a relationship with us, He wants to exist with us. He wants to be one with us. He wants us to experience victory and He wants the spiritual authorities and powers to know who we are and what this mystery is. We, the church, gets to announce it! However, this is only possible through Holy Spirit. Will we choose Him today?

When someone has an encounter with the Spirit, their lives are forever changed and the mystery is revealed. As the mysteries of His Word are revealed through the Spirit we also become students of the Word, drawing ever closer to Him.

When we take communion, we are renewing our covenant with God and are direct recipients of God’s grace. It is during the act of communion that we are opening a channel by which God is pouring his grace on us. It is through this grace that we realize that we have been forgiven of our sins and are enabled to leave them. The Bread and Cup are signs of the New Covenant-they point to the reality of the sacrifice of our Savior. Jesus is not talking about the cup itself, but what the cup contains. You’ve heard about quests to find the "holy grail", the actual chalice Christ used in the Upper Room. It would certainly have archeological significance, but the cup doesn’t have any special powers. And there is no magic in taking Communion. The cup we share doesn’t save; faith in what the Cup represents does save us. After we receive Christ as our Lord, we then confirm our commitment over this holy meal. Every time we observe the Lord’s Supper we renew our commitment as God’s redeemed people. When God looks at us, He no longer sees our sins; they’ve been covered by the blood of Christ. Our pardon is sealed, and we’re guaranteed eternal life. We are children of the new and everlasting covenant!

We cannot overstate the importance of community life for Christians. We have been conditioned to think that individualism is the right way to go, but that is not at all what we learn from Jesus or the scriptures. John Wesley started something he called societies, bands, and classes to help accomplish community. These small groups prayed together, ate together, and held each other accountable. At our church, not only do we have church on Sunday mornings, we too have small groups. You might have heard of our Sunday School and home group Ministries. We have small group and discipleship classes throughout the week for every age and most interest groups. I hope that we can learn to live in community, to hold each other accountable, pray together, eat together, love one another...to become a New Testament church. One that is on fire for God and wants to spread that fire, all the while living under God’s Grace.

We must be Christians in both word and deed, this is how we will express the love...the grace of God. Acts of service are those practices that draw us closer to one another through the presence of the Spirit. Jesus told His disciples that His followers would be recognized for how they loved and served one another. Scholars have noted about John Wesley and the Methodists that, “It was not so much that the Methodists were among the poor as the poor were among the Methodists.” In other words, a shared life together which crosses economic, social, or ethnic boundaries and calls people to inward and outward expressions of holy love is the calling of the Christian life.

There are things we can do to increase our spiritual formation and attend to the grace of God in our lives. One thing we have to be careful about is that these disciplines do not become their own religion. We cannot expect anything if we are not doing them for the right reasons...to grow closer to God and attend to God’s grace in our lives. If used properly, these means become a channel by which God’s grace overflows in us. The chief means of spiritual formation is prayer. This is true simply because we only need to ask God to receive His grace. It is the most direct form of contact with God. We must attend to the grace of God in our lives regularly, through prayer. May God be with us as we earnestly seek him in prayer.

Bob Heneghan said, "At the end of the age you have to be in line with Christ or Satan. We are being shaped by either one critter or the other critter. Who I am is who I'm going to end up with. Union with God, abiding in Christ, shapes us. The fire that purges us is basically destroying our self-centeredness where it's actually creating and activating our real self in to the person God wants us to be."  Spiritual formation is the process of lining ourselves up with Christ. I know that none of us want to be declared fans on judgement day, and I know we aren’t offered the guarantee that we’d really like, but Jesus does offer a different kind of guarantee. Jesus guarantees that if you put your trust in Him, He will never fail you. He guarantees that if you stake your life on His message of truth, He will stake His life on your eternity in Heaven. Jesus guarantees that if you put your trust and hope in Him, He’ll guide you to an eternity with God the Father. We don’t know the day, but we know His name, and as scripture tells us, by his name alone are men saved. But you have to decide. Are you a fan or are you a follower of Jesus? All of those guarantees are for the followers who refuse to leave His side...the followers who ask, “To whom shall we go. You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One sent from God.”

So what is our part of the story? What can we do as a church, as individuals in the church, to perpetuate Jesus' gospel? God has given us the vision to love like Jesus so lives are changed. We will accomplish that by loving God with every fiber of our being, loving each other like Jesus loved us, and loving our community so they can see this love. Today we wrap up this summer long series of the Sermon on the Mount. I think it can be summed up nicely by saying that if we aren’t producing fruit, we aren’t following Jesus and his plan for us. Church is a place that we come to help each other grow in Christ and learn how to be a Christ follower. A place where we hold each other accountable. We must be careful not to let this idea that we will somehow drift into the kingdom of God invade our thinking. The decision to follow Christ must be followed by a decision everyday...every moment of every day...to continue to pursue him and righteousness. It’s not that the right way is so narrow because it’s that much harder than every other way, or that there is virtue found in the narrow way itself, it’s simply that there is only one way.

Today we look at Jesus' warning for us to avoid the extremes of judgment. We need to be careful not to become harshly judgmental, looking for faults, taking the opportunity to look down on others from our position of self-righteousness, but neither are we to overlook sin. We need to be able to recognize sin for what it is. Any attempt to overlook or justify sin on any grounds is itself sinful.

How should we pray? Is there an instruction book? Prayer is one of the ways we touch Jesus – let Jesus touch us – and let Jesus change our lives. Prayer is one of the spiritual disciplines we need to incorporate into our lives if we are going to grow in our faith – grow in our relationship with God – and put ourselves in a position where God can change us. Today we look at the importance of prayer and how it should be done.

Welcome to the Summer of the Sermon! Each Sunday through the summer we are going to go through and dig in to the Sermon on the Mount and discover what exactly Jesus wants from us.

Jesus is calling us to a higher standard. He is challenging us to grow in obedience to him. The last few paragraphs of Jesus’ sermon are on the theme of a greater righteousness. A righteousness that cannot be achieved by following the law. The godliness that Jesus is talking about cannot be comprehensively formulated in a set of rules. The ethics of this Sermon are not exhaustive, they are suggestive. In other words, as we pursue Jesus, and fall in love with him, and become more like him, we begin to reflect his character and likeness.

Welcome to the Summer of the Sermon! Each Sunday through the summer we are going to go through and dig in to the Sermon on the Mount and discover what exactly Jesus wants from us.

Anger can destroy us. We cannot let anger wriggle its way into our lives or else we will be eat up with it. And, with that anger in our lives, we cannot be reconciled to God.

Many of us have always felt that if we don’t murder someone, we are OK. If we don’t “say” anything bad about someone that is OK. Jesus came in and said, “It’s not about what you say or what you do as much as it is about what’s in your heart.” He takes the law and he tells us we have to raise the bar. So, it’s not about murder or hate as much as it is about loving God and pursuing Jesus. It is in this state of mind that we will find peace with God.

Welcome to the Summer of the Sermon! Each Sunday through the summer we are going to go through and dig in to the Sermon on the Mount and discover what exactly Jesus wants from us.

It is important we understand pursuing a relationship with Christ is the most important thing. That’s what we are doing. It is in that pursuit that we learn to love to follow the law. It’s not about how much we know or how strictly we can follow it, it is about following Jesus and how we can exceed what the law says. Jesus didn’t come and say, “OK, the law doesn’t count anymore.” In fact, he said quite the opposite. The law still counts. Doing what the law says is important. However, we can’t do what the law says, just because it says. It is when we do more than the law says that we gain status in the Kingdom of God.

Welcome to the Summer of the Sermon! Each Sunday through the summer we are going to go through and dig in to the Sermon on the Mount and discover what exactly Jesus wants from us.

Taking the Sermon on the Mount in order, first he taught us though the Beatitudes to make sure our relationship with God is right. The second thing he taught us is that we need to be salt and light. In other words, as our relationship with God gets stronger and we grow closer to him, our lives will naturally become a tasty brightness to everyone in this world!

Welcome to the Summer of the Sermon! Each Sunday through the summer we are going to go through and dig in to the Sermon on the Mount and discover what exactly Jesus wants from us.

God’s desire for us is to be transformed. To be different from the rest of the world. It reminds me of the little girl who asked her mother, “If God is bigger than us and he lives in us, wouldn’t he show through?” In the beginning, God created us in His image. It is his desire that we are like him. We know that sin has distorted that image, but we are in the pursuit of restoring that image through holiness.

What does it mean to take offense? If you look up the definition of the word, offended, you will see most dictionaries say something about anger and resentment. As we get in to this, you may be thinking, like me, aren’t we allowed to be angry? What about righteous anger? Aren’t Christians supposed to be angry at people for certain things? We will talk about all these things and more through this series.

As we wrap up this series, "Unoffendable," you may be asking, so what? What should we do about the anger and constant feeling of offense? The point of it all is so that people will know who Jesus is. If we will choose to be unoffendable, people will see the love that Jesus has for them through us.

Here’s the deal with me today. I’m tired of all the hate. I’m tired of the racial divide. I’m tired of people killing each other. And honestly, if the 83% of people in the United States who claim to be Christian would actually love the way Jesus has prescribed and choose to be unoffendable, we could change the world!

Choosing to be unoffendible does not mean accepting injustice, it means “Actively seeking justice and loving mercy, while walking humbly with God.”

Let’s take some time today and ask God to help us love justice, but wait on him. To learn to trust that God is going to take care of everything, including the injustices we see and maybe to help us not to lose our cool and pretend our anger is righteous.

I can just be present. I don’t have to carry the weight of judgment or condemnation. Jesus wants to “release us from the constant evaluation, never-ending striving, and relentless assessment of where we, and everyone else, stand” (Hansen 91).

One thing we’ve realized, and probably everyone knows, it takes a village. What I mean is that the body operates in service together. God has given each of us gifts, Jesus has assigned various roles to us, and we all play our part in the body. In fact, one of our covenants of membership is to actively be involved in service. We believe it is important to become actively involved in a ministry of this church body. This is one of the ways we are able to love like Jesus so that lives are changed.

It is the people of the ekklesia (church body) who make ministry happen. I think we all know it’s important to volunteer service at the church. Today we are addressing what happens when you serve.

This idea of canceling each other has been going on for a long time. People want to cancel God, students want to cancel teachers. If we don’t like something that ketchup stands for, cancelled. Did that person offend you? Cancelled. Going even further back, they didn’t like that Jesus had raised Lazarus from the grave (John 11:38-44) so they wanted to kill him (John 12:10). The ultimate came when they tried, and failed, to cancel Jesus! Since we just came through Easter, it might be good to talk about what happened after Easter. Even the disciples believed that Jesus was dead, that he was cancelled. Perhaps the greatest illustration of this was Thomas.

If we are to sum up the message of Easter, it is so much more than the fact that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He did, indeed die for our sins, but that is not all. His death and resurrection started something new. It was the death of the old. When we say yes to Jesus, we enter in to a new way of life. One in which he is the source, the strength, the example, and the assurance.

The season of Lent is a time to evaluate our relationship with God as we prepare for Easter, Jesus' resurrection. It is a time to repent and turn back to Him. Today we are going to look at Palm Sunday and how the Kingdom of God is really an upside down world from the earthly cultural reality. In our world, the weak are trampled, the humble are made fun of, it’s opposite of a Kingdom reality.

Today we are going to ask the question, "Who is pulling your strings?" In our scripture today, Paul talks about the two different mind sets we might have. One is a mind controlled by our flesh...our desires. The other is a mind controlled by Holy Spirit. That leaves us with the question, is our mind focused on what we want? Or what He wants?

He did for us what we could not do for ourselves.

When you hear “Christmas Preparation” what do you think? It probably suggests going up to the attic, pulling down the decorations, putting up a tree, putting lights on the house, wrapping gifts, etc. How about baking cakes and cookies, a honey ham, smoking a turkey, etc. It seems like we all have a thousand things to do to get ready for Christmas, but is this the kind of preparation that Advent points us towards?

What I love about Advent is that it is a time of expectation, anticipation, and preparation for celebrating...

-The fact that Jesus came to this world 2,000 years ago...

-That Jesus has come into the hearts of those who believe, causing us to be new creations...

-That Jesus will come back again and usher in God’s kingdom in all it’s fullness!

In celebrating Advent, we need to remember that we are not only celebrating Jesus first entrance into this world, we are also looking forward in anticipation for his return!

Our society loves freedom. Exalts it to the be all and end all. Free country. Freedom of religion, freedom to vote, freedom to work anywhere that will take you, freedom to choose to eat or not eat genetically modified food, freedom to choose what kind of car you drive, freedom to choose the store you buy your clothes in, in fact in our society the ultimate punishment is the depravation of freedom through imprisonment. When we talk to others about the gospel of Jesus, we need to do it in a way they will understand. Why not talk about the freedom that is found in Christ!?
