The question today is remarkably straightforward, Does God send people to hell? But that doesn’t mean the answer is simple. And the answer we give has deep implications. Our answer reveals what we believe about the character of God, Judgement, and what happens to us after we die.

Let’s be honest, every faith community has a certain relationship with the cross. But the imagery itself is quite gory. It’s violent. What kind of God would send his son to die? It lends one to ask the question, Did Christ have to die? The question invites us to dig deeper into our own beliefs about atonement.

Is that really our only option with the Bible? Cut away the parts we’re uncomfortable with and fashion the Bible to suit our likings? Or is it a matter of take it or leave it? Accept the Bible wholesale with everything in it just the way it’s written or toss it out altogether?
We are in a series on faith questions you say you would like help in answering. Our question today is this: “Is the Bible Reliable?” Typically that question gets answered by two extremes. Rob Bell, in his book What the Bible Is, captures these extremes this way:
“Some people see the Bible as an outdated, primitive book of barbaric fairy tales we have moved beyond. And then there are those folks who talk about how important and central and inspired the Bible is but then butcher it with their stilled literalism and stifling interpretations.”

Over 4 ½ years ago we did a series called Questions Alexa Can’t Answer in which we probed some of the tough theological questions of faith. Today we start a similar series. The key difference is these topics come from you. They are the questions about faith and God you hear from friends, your children, family members which you said you would like help in knowing how to answer.

It is the final week of our Parched series. And over the last month, we’ve been exploring how to use different Practices to fill our Spiritual Cups. We’ve looked at how we pay attention, what it means to rest, the gift of exploring and trying new things, and how to have a rhythm of prayer.

This week, we are looking at the spiritual practice of PRAYER. We do it every week in church, maybe you do it regularly in your personal life, but prayer is simply talking to and listening to God.

We’ve come to week two of our Parched sermon series. I said this last week and I think it’s worth saying it again. This is an essential conversation because too often we show up to the most important places of our lives parched and depleted. Our goal is simply to look at different spiritual practices that will help become people that fill those empty places with things that are healthy and fulfilling.

We wrap up our June sermon series today in which we have been thinking about some important thresholds in the Bible. We looked at the story of Daniel’s friends crossing the threshold of a furnace door and how that willingness to face the heat rather than run from it led to a discovery of God’s presence and power they wouldn’t have found otherwise.
At some point in our lives we all needed to be liberated from something. Juneteeth gives us the space to celebrate the freedoms in our nations history and invites us to think about the conversations around liberation and acceptance that still need to be discussed. In fact, the church was having similar conversations as it was trying to figure out what it meant for them to be the church. They didn’t know it at the time, but the church had to go through its own journey of liberation.

We are in a series called Thresholds. We are considering the two understandings of that word. A threshold is an entry point like a doorway we go through. But threshold also has to do with capacity and ability. In spiritual terms, the thresholds God leads us to cross are ones that increase our spiritual thresholds.

Today we begin a series called Thresholds. One definition for a Threshold is “the place or point of entering or beginning.” Like a doorway. A threshold is associated with an entry point.
But there is another meaning for threshold: “a point at which a physiological or psychological effect is produced.” This has more of an understanding of capacity, like we might say a threshold of pain or potential.

In his commentary on the Book of the Acts, Will Willimon reminds us of a line from poet T.S. Eliot who wrote: “In my beginning is my end.” What he means is that there is something about beginning stories that foreshadows what becomes of a person or organization. What are your beginning stories? Do any of you have traditions, say on your birthdays, when you go back and remember how you came into the world?

Over these past few weeks we have been a series around a popular theme surrounding the story of the Good Samaritan. It pushes us to think critically about how we respond to each other. It amazing to think that with all of the technological advances we’ve had over the last 2 thousand years, most societies still struggle with the simple concept of being neighborly. It’s sounds so easy. You’d think we have this figured out by now. I think at the heart of our response of being neighborly is a commitment to care for the things and people that God has created. Its assigning a certain value to Gods creation. Its seeing the living God I all things and people. That determines how we care for it and how we care for each other. Sometimes these opportunities can be planned, coordinated, but most times like in our text they happen unexpectedly in our lives.

Five years ago we did a series called “Neighboring.” It was part of a movement going on at the time in churches across the country. It started in Denver. A ecumenical group of pastors met with the mayor to discuss how their churches might help with the most threatening problems in their city. The mayor said, “Help our neighborhoods…”
There are people in St. Luke’s today because we did this exercise six years ago. Members got to know neighbors, one day they invited them to St. Luke’s. And they are here now. But that really isn’t the goal. Its not a gimmick to get people in church. Its just about helping us become better people at caring for others, noticing others, taking time to learn about those who live the closest to us.

We conclude today our series based on Dr. Hansen’s book Three Vital Beliefs, the three core beliefs that got Adolf and Naomi through a terrible tragedy and beliefs that can sustain us through our challenging times. The first two beliefs were about God: the character of God, that God is good; and how God expresses God’s character, that God works for good in everything.

We started last week with Pastor Jevon looking at the belief that God is good. This belief focuses on the character of God. Goodness defines God’s character. Today we move to the expression of God’s character and that is the activity of God; the belief that God is at work in and through every circumstance.

The sermon series is based off his new book that looks at three major beliefs we have as people of faith. As you heard in the interview, the backdrop of the book is seen through the experience of the tragic death of his daughter. And the message that resulted from that tragedy is one that’s unexpected. It’s one that almost catches us off guard. The message that we begin our series is that makes this affirmation. God is good all the time.

We finish the series, "The Questions Jesus Asked" today with the question "Why Are You Crying."
So have you ever thought of the Easter story as a tear-jerker? I never did until we looked at the Questions Jesus Asks during Lent. Normally we don’t continue a Lent series to Easter Day, but the first words spoken by the risen Christ in the Gospel of John are a question. He asks, “Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus says this to Mary, who was first asked this question by angels in the tomb. The story of Easter begins with tears.

And so today we’re going to keep on looking at these questions. And today the question that we’re looking at is (SLIDE) “Who do you say I am?”

This is a question of discipleship. Now that’s a very churchy word, and some people aren’t sure what it means, but it because of its connection to the label Christian, many folks are uncomfortable with the label. But let’s understand that the word disciple is a lot like the word apprentice. When you are an apprentice, it means you learn from someone. Sometimes people in a specialized careers, go to be an apprentice under an expert so they can learn all they can from that person.

The question of Jesus we consider today is one that is most important for any person who has ever been torn down by criticism and condemnation of others: “Where are your accusers?” It’s the simplest of the questions Jesus asked, but the conditions surrounding it are anything but.

During this season of Lent we are considering some of the questions Jesus asks. Today’s question is taken from this challenging text we just heard: “For if you love only those who love you, what reward do you have?” (CEV)
This is a question of compassion. I would suppose that compassion for most of us makes us think of acts of mercy like caring for someone who is sick. But the heart of the word compassion is, obviously, passion. Passion comes from a Latin word that means suffer. That is why we talk about the passion of Jesus, it means the suffering of Jesus. Therefore compassion means “to suffer with.” That can mean a couple of things: sharing someone else’s suffering, or putting up with someone who causes us suffering.

This is the question we consider today in our series for this Lenten season, The Questions Jesus Asks. Jesus asked over 300 questions in the Gospel. Even more than parables, Jesus used questions as a teaching tool. He understood that the lessons that stick with us are not the ones handed to us. They are brought out of us, and good questions draw out the best lessons. So what might Jesus want to draw out of us by asking, “What do you call me Lord and do not do what I tell you?”

Lent is meant to be a spiritually transformative period. We remember Jesus’ suffering and death, but more than remember, we do things that help up us enter into his own passion, his very life, so that we can better experience His risen life on Easter. To help us this Lent we will consider Questions Jesus Asks.
You may not realize just how many questions Jesus asked in the Gospels. In fact, let’s take a little poll to see what you think. How many would say Jesus asked around 20 questions? 50 questions? 100? 300? The last group would be right. Actually Jesus asked more than 300 questions in the Gospels. As much as parables were an important teaching method of Jesus, so were asking questions.

We conclude today a series on relationships called Tug of War recognizing, as Pastor Jevon has pointed out the last couple weeks, that relationships involve give and take, tension like in a tug of war. And healthy relationships understand that not every battle should be won. But somewhere along the way, we have to change the analogy. Somewhere we need to move from being in a tug of war and come together on the same side.

We continue on in our relationship series Tug of war today as we look closer into how we deal with the constant pull in our relationships. Even healthy relationships come with a constant back and forth. How we handle this often determines the quality of our relationships. The hard part is that in the game of Tug of War is that someone inevitably wins and someone loses. And today is a reminder that you don’t have to win every battle. Listen in for more.

Tug of war describes the natural and evidential pull of opposing forces that exist when people or groups of people are in relationship. It’s the constant pulling of gives and takes. This sermon series we are talking about relationships - not just romantic relationships, but relationships with your friends, your children, your parents, your people, your community. This week, Pastor Jevon talks about how you can’t control how other people respond or pull in a relationship. You can only control how healthy you show up. Listen in for more.

What Jesus talks about in the scripture today, and what this whole series on faith and doubt has been leading up to; Jesus talks about home, and grief, and what we really believe in.
Jesus prepares the disciples for his own death and departure. That’s what’s going on in John 14. And he talks about this in terms of home. He says, “In my Father’s House there are many dwelling places,” or rooms. He talks about his relationship with God as being like a home, and it is something he invites the disciples into. He told them, “I go to prepare a place for you so that where I am you may be also, and you know the way to the place where I am going.” Think about what Jesus is saying here. “You are never forgotten. Someone is always looking for you.” Listen as Pastor Rob talks not about religion but about faith.

Only doubt can save the world. We often talk about the power of faith, but we don’t talk about the power of doubt. And who better to help us consider the power of doubt than the disciple Thomas. He is known to us today as Doubting Thomas, which gives the impression that he is not a paragon of faith, that he is somehow the poster-child of un-faith. But that could not be further from the truth. Listen as Pastor Rob dives deep into doubt and faith.

Today we start and new series called Faith & Doubt where we will explore different angles of doubt and the positive role doubt can play in our faith. The message title this Sunday is "The Believing Side of Faith" and we will consider the story told in Mark 9:14-29. This passage tells of a father who brought his son to be healed by Jesus and ends up making one of the most powerful statements in the New Testament, "I believe, help my unbelief." We will unpack this declaration and think about the powerful implications of it.

Maybe it wasn’t around Christmas, but maybe it was involving something else. How did you feel when you found out that something that certain things didn’t add up. Did it feel like a disappointment or let down? How did it effect you? I mean, let’s face it we've all been there? Ever prayed a thanksgiving prayer? Sometimes we come at Thanksgiving through the back door. Our thanksgiving is not always about feeling abundantly blessed or full. Sometimes it comes out of hardship or challenge. Interestingly that latter condition has motivated people to give thanks more than any other.

In many ways, our series the last few weeks has been like solving a Rubik’s Cube. We’ve looked at the three loves Jesus identifies in the two great commandments, Love God with all your heart, soul, and might; and Love your neighbor as yourself. Love of God, Love of Others and Love of Self are like three dimensions that support life.

What makes a person a saint? I dare say most of us disqualify ourselves from that status, yet all the people we recognized in this service this morning would probably have been equally uncomfortable with such a title. But the qualities of genuine sainthood are not perfection, self-righteousness, superb biblical or theological knowledge. It is the way the love of God is reflected in our living.

Because Jesus was in the form of God, he became a servant.
What’s my point? Serving is God’s nature. And Paul says it is our nature too. We are made to be compassionate, caring, and giving. We are most alive when we find a way to make a positive difference in the world. Parker Palmer reminds us that the word vocation comes from the Latin word for “listen.” We find our vocation, our calling in life, when we listen to who God made us to be, and we allow our lives to be used to bless others.

We begin today a stewardship series, which often in church translates into raising money, which is an unfortunate mischaracterization. Steward is one of the most important words in the Bible that describes our primary identity as human beings. The word steward means manager. God calls us to manage all that God gives us.
We see this in the first chapter of the Bible…“So God created human beings…blessed them, and said, “Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge…” (Genesis 1:27-28 GNT) This doesn’t mean we can run the earth the way we want. It means we are given the responsibility to manage creation the way God wants. We are called to steward everything God gives us.
But here’s the paradox about stewardship. You don’t have to be a person of faith to be a steward. Regardless of our faith or lack of faith in God, we all have resources in life to manage. We have our bodies, our souls, our minds, our relationships, our possessions, our potential, and more. Whatever we think about God, we are managing what we have. We make decisions everyday about the way we want to manage and use what we are given in this life. And the way we manage our resources says everything about what we value and believe about life.

Romans 13: 1-7
Of the several controversial things the Apostle Paul wrote, and there were several(!), one of the greatest is this: “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities.” Did Paul mean we should obey whatever governing authority happens to be in power at the time? If you had been a southern, plantation owner in the 1700’s, you might have agreed with Paul and criticized abolitionists for not obeying scripture. The Bible is clear, we are to be subject to governing authorities. But then you look at the Civil Rights movement and find leaders who were inspired by scripture to resist unfair laws and authorities.
The relationship between church and state has always been tenuous, and Paul’s words in Romans have always been problematic for Christians somewhere in the world at any point in history. For instance, should Christians in Russia today support their current regime? Should Christians in Israel support the policies affecting Palestinians? Should Christians in America be happy or sad about decisions by our Supreme Court?
Of course, the answer is: it depends on what you believe. America has lived its existence in a strange contradiction—believing in the separation of church and state while respecting and even protecting the freedom of religion. People who say that America is a Christian nation have a struggle with the constitution where it says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…” At the same time, people who say religion should have no place in politics struggle with endorsements like our currency that says “In God we trust.” We are a country that refuses to let religion determine our politics while also resisting the removal of faith from our political life.
So what does this mean for the church? At times Christians involved themselves in politics to the point of aligning with certain political parties. This often divides and alienates people. On the other hand, some churches have sought to stay removed from potentially divisive topics, they were guilty of remaining silent when the church should have been speaking up.
We conclude today our series on BE Just, Kind and Humble in which we have been looking at the light Christians can bring to our divided country, and we do so asking the question, What does the nation need from the church right now?

For the last few weeks, we’ve been in our Be Just, Kind, Humble series and we’ve talked about what it means to live out those three things we find in Micah 6:8. And today we're going to get really practical, and maybe a little uncomfortable. Because today we’re talking about loving our neighbor. And not just the neighbor who brings your trash cans in or waves to you every time you come and go—not the neighbors that are EASY to love. Today we’re talking about how in the world we love the neighbor who we don’t agree with. Maybe, if we’re honest, the one we try to avoid or we don’t really like.
And I am really challenged by this, because while that certainly seems EASIER, and tempting to only do life with people who I agree with, I’m not sure it is exactly how Jesus is calling us to live, especially not in this particular passage of scripture that we read today. There’s a real challenge in these words- Love God. Love your neighbor. Everything depends on doing these two things.
So as we talk about loving your neighbor, I know that this is a really tender space for some of us, and sometimes there ARE relationships we can’t heal on our own.
But in the places where we can make some progress, there is also a call that Jesus gives us to do everything we can to create loving, healthy relationships even in moments of conflict or disunity.

Kindness in the Bible is the most important description of the character of God.
The word for kindness in the Old Testament is Hesed. It is a multifaceted word with many ways it can be defined, but the most frequent is kindness. That is the basic meaning of hesed. But hesed is not just an emotion. It is not describing a feeling, but action on behalf of someone in need. What does the Lord require of us? Action on behalf of people in need.
Our willingness to practice hesed, to show people the kindness of God, could be the greatest hope for our world right now.
“You always have to be optimistic that people can change, and that you can change, and that one act of kindness may make all the difference in the world.” (Good News Magazine, “Bright Light in Montgomery” Sept-Oct 2021, p20)

Election seasons seem to become more and more divisive every couple of years. The fabric of our union as Americans feels as though it gets more fragile at the seams. Published 50 years ago, but as fresh as today’s newspaper, Methodist preacher Wallace Hamilton wrote: “The whole country today seems in an ugly mood, as if we’d all been suddenly bitten by the same venomous bug—class against class, black against white, younger generation against older. Everyone rallies around (their) hates—and some have called us ‘The United Hates of America.’ I don’t intend to go into all of this,” he continues, “except to say that we who are Christian should be a healing influence in society, take some of the heat out of the hysteria, reduce the fever, and restore some decent balance in our judgments.” (p.83, What About Tomorrow?)
Such sentiment was more recently echoed by former senator John Danforth and Matt Malone in a September 2020 op-ed for the Wall Street Journal. They said:
"Today a growing number of Americans regard their political opponents not as fellow citizens with whom they disagree but as enemies; as politically, socially and even morally irredeemable. Millions of Americans consume news in echo chambers, while countless numbers have lost friends or even turned away from family over political disagreements. This tendency to divide the world between us and them has come even to American churches, where righteous advocacy of social justice can come across as self-righteous scolding of individuals. Christians have a religious duty to champion the cause of justice. But as the prophet Micah teaches, they also have the duty to walk humbly with God and with their neighbors, especially when tempted to think of themselves as the swords of divine judgment. Ultimately, everyone bears responsibility for polarization. This might seem like unwelcome news, but it’s the opposite. As long as the cause of the problem is someone else, then nothing can be done. But those who acknowledge how they contribute to the problem also can begin to imagine how they can create a better culture. In this world Americans would see each other as neighbors and treat each other as friends, even and especially when they disagree deeply. We are priests from different Christian churches. We belong to different generations and have worked for different political parties. Yet we share a love of country that transcends those differences. Above all, we share a faith in God, who alone has the power to separate the righteous from the sinners." In this spirit we begin today a five-week series in which we are joining other large United Methodist churches around the country to examine what it means to be the church in times of division. Doing mishpat and tzedakah means Practicing Mercy and Justice.

When is a worse time to go grocery shopping, when you’re full or when you’re hungry? Let’s try this out. I want you to imagine you’re hungry right now and I will show you a series of two pictures at a time. You tell me which you’d probably buy when hungry….3 pictures – Rob will call out one at a time. When you’re hungry you tend to buy the things that appear to give immediate benefit to hunger. In other words, high calorie foods that are probably not good for you. Cornell University did a lab study with shoppers who didn’t eat 5 hours prior and others who shopped right after a meal. As expected the hungry shoppers not only bought more, they bought items they normally wouldn’t. These shoppers said things like, “I know I shouldn’t get this stuff, but…” The study was enlightening not only for everyday shoppers but particularly food insecure people who live hungry most of the time. It also analyzed the way many stores present more high calorie items for easy choosing. I found this conclusion of the study very interesting: “The body is always trying to defend its state and it makes very logical sense that if you’re going for a period without food…you’re more likely to go for the food that’s high-calorie. If we’re needing energy, we’re not going to go out for lettuce.” (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-sh...) The body is always trying to defend its state. If what’s true of the body is true of the soul, then what’s the state of your soul today? Are you happy? Sad? Joyful? Depressed? Confident? Fearful? If your soul tried to defend it’s state, then what is it seeking? Subscribe to receive our latest messages: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2n... When we pick up on the Israelites story today, we find them in what William Bridges, in his book Transitions, calls “the neutral zone.” And I don’t know about you, but that word neutral immediately makes me think of being stuck. You put your car in neutral and floor the gas- doesn't matter, you’re not going anywhere. And that feeling isn’t too far off from how Bridges defines this part of a transition. He says that the Neutral Zone: (SLIDE) the in-between time where you hang suspended between what “was and will be” (p.40)
Basically, this is the part of the transition where we wait. And wait and wait and wait some more. And it’s not always pretty when we wait for an extended period of time. We can get impatient, we can want to give up...all the momentum has run out once we hit the neutral zone, and we have to figure out if we’re going to make it to what comes next or if we’re going to bail.
I don’t know what kind of change or transition you might be going through right now- it might be a job change, the end of a relationship, trying to get your kids back on a school schedule, or beginning to care for an aging parent. It might be a transition that you’ve chosen or one that you’re dreading. But I do know that at some point, each and every one of us during a transition is going to want to give up. We’re going to wonder if it’s worth it or we’re going to hit a patch of grief that feels too big.
If that’s where you are today- if you’re wondering if you’re going to make it through, or you’re just exhausted by the waiting- I want to encourage you to keep going. Perseverance doesn’t magically take the hard stuff away. But it does point us toward hope and what’s possible.

If you could have a significant choice back in your life, would you take it? If so, what would it be? A college choice? A job choice? Whether or not to get married? A particular move? And if you would have chosen differently, here’s a second question, Why? Why would you have chosen differently? What is the outcome you believe you would have had? The answer to those two questions says a lot about us, and indirectly says a lot about our faith.
Life is a series of change and transitions. But the two are not the same. Listen as Pastor Rob talks about life's transitions and how God can take any ending and turn it into a new beginning.

Today we start a new series, Transitions. Ever feel pain with change? I don’t want to go through this change. I don’t want to change schools. I don’t want to leave home and go to college. I am not ready for my child to go to college. I don’t want to have to change jobs. I don’t want to divorce. I don’t want to be alone. I don’t want to retire, or grow old, or leave my house, or give up my freedoms.
Life is a series of change and transitions. But the two are not the same. Listen as Pastor Rob talks about life's transitions and how God can take any ending and turn it into a new beginning.

Our song or psalm for this week is even more confusing, and challenging, and needed. It describes our deepest fear and our deepest need. Last week could very well be a part 1 to this message because it was written by David so we have to filter the lyrics through his context. Today, Pastor Jevon talks about Psalm 139 - and how God fearfully and wonderfully made us. He reminds us to look at ourselves and remind ourselves that God can handle what we desperately want to hide. One of the difficult journeys of faith is not believing in God. It’s believing what God believes in you. No matter what, He accepts you - just remind yourself, THIS IS ME.

The 51st psalm is a plea for forgiveness and a desire to repent. It is a response to an entanglement that David had thats recorded in more details in 2 Samuel 12. Listen in as Pastor Jevon talks us through how blowing it can be redeemed in our trust in God and how HE cleans our hearts.

For this month of July we are looking at psalms. If you didn’t get one last week we have a note card that gives helpful background on the Book of Psalms. There are 150 psalms that came together over 6 centuries. They were written by kings like David as well as other known and unknown composers. The psalms are like a hymn book. They describe the honest feelings and emotions of the writers and show us that we can do the same. We can share with God whatever is going on inside of us—even feelings of anger and revenge.
The psalms were like the hymnbook of Israel. If you get nothing else out of this series, I hope you appreciate the way music helps us experience the presence of God unlike anything else. I hope you will be encouraged to incorporate music in an intentional way in your devotions or meditation time. Through song we experience God in unique ways.

They describe the honest feelings and emotions of the writers and show us that we can do the same. We can share with God whatever is going on inside of us—even feelings of anger and revenge.
Today we consider the most popular category of the psalms comprising one-third of all psalms, Lament. And out of these 50 psalms of lament we consider Psalm 22.
This is what makes Psalm 22, and Jesus use of it on the cross, an important tool for us because it teaches us that Why is an okay question to ask God. Why is the most frequently occurring question in the psalms. It indicates something is wrong and does not make sense. And we are searching for understanding and taking our search to God.
Asking God why does not show a lack of faith. It is an expression of faith. It shows a faith that believes God can do something about our pain. And in bringing our real honest emotions and questions to God we find how God can help us. Often our greatest need is not a reason why. It is a comforting hand.
And, there are times when our praise is not because of what God got us through, but because we refuse to give up believing God will get us through.

We begin a five week series on Psalms today which is why we are calling it Summer Playlist. Psalms are songs. The Book of Psalms is like a hymnbook. So each week we will have songs we use in worship you can access at stlukesumc.com/summer
To save time in today’s message I have a one-page background that helps to understand the Book of Psalms. This morning we begin with Psalm 16 which is a Psalm of Trust.See sermon notes and more at stlukesumc.com/sermons

If you haven’t caught on by now, we are in a final series this spring dealing with Paul’s spiritual tri-fecta. I Lent we talked about Faith. After Easter we spent some weeks dealing with Love. Now we talk about Hope. Faith, Hope and Love. I realize we got them out of order, but that’s just to keep you on your toes.
But really, this order makes more sense, because if we have faith and love, then we are going to be people of hope. We are going to have hope and give hope. So this series uses HOPE as an acronym to consider the different ways we are called as people of faith and love to bring hope to the world. So today we consider how H.O.P.E. means Hang On, Peace Exists!

There comes a point when the veil is lifted, and you realize the world isn’t as perfect as you thought. When this happens, it 1 of three things. 1. It jades you and you become a skeptic. 2. It inspires you. 3. It does a little of both. Listen in as Pastor Jevon talks about HOPE in Education and how you can plant the seed in someone's life that can change them forever.

I have to be honest with you, this is a hard week to preach this message. Objectively, I believe this. I believe that pain can be overcome and hope is always possible, but I have to tell you that this week I really did not FEEL it. As I watched the news out of Texas, just a couple weeks after shootings in New York and California, as I saw pictures of the kids and adults who had died, and as a mother I sent my own children back to school the next day, the pain and grief seemed too loud to even understand. Listen as Pastor Mindie talks about Pain and Hope.

Ever had the experience where you think you’re talking with somebody but it’s like you’ve got two totally different conversations going on? Or where you think you are talking about the same thing but what the other person is saying you can’t even understand. Or when you are with someone and you are trying to work something out, and you start to discover, “I don’t think we’re going to get there. I don’t think we are going to agree. I don’t know that we are going to be able to clear things up.” What does it mean to love when things aren’t clear?

I’ll let you in on a secret. Most pastors, and I am among them, feel a lot of trepidation about preaching on Mother’s Day. I learned the hard way in my first church what happens when you don’t preach about mothers at all on Mother’s Day. When I got out of seminary I followed the lectionary, prescribed Bible passages for each Sunday of the year. My first Mother’s Day I followed the lectionary without a mention of mothers. And I heard it from all the people who love their mommas and all the mommas who have kids. I don’t think I could have had a more visceral reaction than had I preached some heresy.

As we go through these next few weeks, don’t just limit this to romantic love. The Greeks had different iterations of the word that described different kinds of relationships. It described love of friendships, family, our love for and from God, and romantic love.

For the past six weeks we have been talking about what it means to live by faith. So this morning I want to focus on the second part of the Easter story in John’s Gospel because it focuses on Mary Magdalene who represents a particular kind of Easter faith. Like Peter and John who witnessed the empty tomb, they were all believers in Jesus. They didn’t exactly come to faith on Easter, they came to a new faith.

For people of faith it seems the burden of proof has always been against us when it comes to presenting a reasonable argument for why we believe. After all we are talking about a God we cannot see or touch; and claims like resurrection, walking on water or parting a sea defy what our own sciences say is possible. Listen how Pastor Rob talks about finding the evidence in your life.

This week, Pastor Nicole explains how sharing the love of Jesus can change how not only God sees us, but how we see the miracles He makes in our lives. How, Faith is a filter that changes the way we see the world and even the way that we see Jesus. Depending on our angle, our soul settings the saturation of faith and the light of Christ that filters through our lives- we literally see the world and even Jesus differently.

Our series this Lent is called Faith Changes Everything. Lent is a good season to give attention to our faith. It is a time for Christians to reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ suffering and death and deepening and renewing our connection to God.
But you don’t have to be Christian, of course, to have faith. You don’t even have to believe in God to have faith.
In this first Sunday in our Lenten series, Faith Changes Everything, Pastor Rob talks about how faith is determined by what you seek. If your highest need is comfort and satisfaction faith might always seem a bit illusive, or perhaps thin. But if you seek a connection to God that can weather difficult times, then you will discover a faith that changes everything.

Pastor Mindie Moore continues our series called Indispensable: relationships we simply cannot live without. And this theme is perfect for this week, when you and you and you and you and, according to market research, 145 million Americans gave Valentine’s Day cards to people they find indispensable.
But you know, of all the types of cards that were given this week- to the husband, wife, partner, galentine or friend- you may not find one written for the relationship that we’re exploring today. Because today, we’re going to talk about “the challenger”.

We all need encouragers, but this week we go in the opposite direction, literally. We think about our need for people who are opposite our gifts and traits.
Our scripture story today does not describe a romantic context. It doesn’t even talk about a family relationship or friendship. It is about relationships in a church context, but it brings out this point about the need for differing, and even opposing, relationships in our lives, and the potential for challenge that brings.

Last week Pastor Rob has talked about how this church reminds us our mission to welcome all. Using stories from the church in Normandy with medics who treated Germans as well as allied soldiers along with civilians. Those bloodstains most likely come from all the people treated. The church is to welcome all to know the hope and truth of Jesus Christ.
Today, as we get ready for the presentation of our long range vision next Sunday, we consider one final metaphor for the mission of the church: taking risks.

Pastor Rob primes the pump and invites us to spend a few weeks thinking about the purpose of the church, not just St. Luke’s, but THE church. What is the mission of the church today? Do we even need the church? Given the increasing numbers of people disconnecting from organized religion that seems a relevant question. With the shifts in popular attitudes about church and questions about how our world will be different because of this pandemic, what does this mean for the future of the Church? Join him for the first in this series: A Church That Heals.

This Sunday Pastor Rob presented a monologue titled Saving Joachim (though the first part will really be a dialogue with a special guest)! The monologue is based on the father of Mary, a non-biblical character, but one who is identified in apocryphal literature-writings of the same time period as biblical books but not included as Holy Scripture. In this case, the story of Mary's parents, Joachim and Anna (for whom there is a church dedicated in her name in Jerusalem built over the site where their house was believed to be) is told in the apocryphal Gospel of James. You can access that writing here. The stories about Joachim and Anna are told in the first three chapters.

Children really make the Christmas story. Literally.
It starts with the baby Jesus, which is kind of amazing if you think about the way the world viewed children in that time. Listen as Pastor Rob reminds us of why Jesus came to the world as a baby and this is often how we find hope for ourselves, that look beyond, we look ahead, we act now in ways that will bless those far beyond the horizon we see and experience the miracle of Christmas to bring a light that never dims.

It might not be all that appealing, but wouldn’t it be refreshing to write a Christmas letter that’s honest? It can be hard to wish people a Merry Christmas when we are living in a Messy Christmas. Christmas, of all times, is when we want the messes of the world to go away, if only for a few weeks. Cover the trees and shrubs in twinkling lights. Deck the house with garland. Play Christmas music.
What if God wants to meet you in that place to use that in some way that can bring light and hope to other people. Light that can redeem pain is a light that never dims.

Today we start a new sermon series called, The Light that never dims. In this series we are going to look at the story of Advent through a missional lens. Here is the question we are trying to answer, “In what ways does Christ’s presence in the world inspire us to look outward in order to be the hope, peace, joy and love for others? This will be different for some of us because society places us in the mind frame of being receivers during this time. What can we get? How can we be blessed? But maybe the story of Christ coming into the world has practical implications on we live out our faith for others. And today we are highlighting our continued commitment to our neighbors in work with Afghan relief.

Often at Thanksgiving we are sanctioned to be grateful as if the feeling of gratitude is created by our determination. Just be thankful! But what if gratitude sometimes comes as a surprise, something we don’t generate? What if it’s more serendipitous, like happiness, something we find not because we set out for it, or made it our object, but simply because we are open to experiences that leave us thankful and actually help us?

We’ve been looking at Paul’s discussion of giving with the Corinthians, noting that Paul is trying to inspire the Corinthians to return to taking a collection for the poor in Jerusalem. And we’ve noted several points Paul has made in these chapters:
involves all God gives us which God can use to better the world.
just temporary renters.
For Mature Audiences. Paul’s main concern was helping people mature in their faith, which meant becoming like Christ, which meant being people of grace.

Sometimes we get a little tripped up with this word “saint” and even get uncomfortable with being called one ourselves and seeing the idea that a saint is something we should live up to. Some believe being a saint means being holier than others, someone to be revered or honored or great. But in reality a saint is nothing more than a person who allowed their lives to be melted down and used as currency in God’s economy of mercy, service and justice in the world. Listen as Pastor Rob talks about saints on earth and how what you do today can make a difference tomorrow.

Paul wrote 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9. He heard something that was very concerning, the Corinthians no longer had a desire to give to the poor in Jerusalem. Maybe times were tight and they didn’t feel they could afford to keep giving. Maybe they questioned whether the poor in Jerusalem were really all that poor. Perhaps they could do something to better their situation and weren’t. For whatever reason they stopped giving. Listen to Pastor Rob as he explains how Paul instructed us to give "according to what one has."

In Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, he spends the most amount of all of his letters, two whole chapters(!), to address the offering because many in the church have grown weary with the focus on money in church. They’ve started coming with their hands on the wallets and they’re getting tired of it. Join Pastor Rob as he talks about the grace of giving at church.

Worship is an expression of our love for God made public. Worship is the outward expression of the inward beliefs and emotions that we have about the character and nature of God. At its core, worship is a response. It’s not an expression of our desperation. It’s not because we want something from God. It’s not because we need something from God. Join Pastor Jevon as he invites you to worship for an audience of one.

What if we tried building the kingdom that was a community with no more pain. No more crying. No more tears. Isn’t that what we’ve been taught to pray.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy (your, not mine, not my parents, not my circle ) your kingdom come, thy will be done (your vision) on earth just as it in heaven. Listen as Pastor Jevon guides us to know whose Kingdom we should be building.

Without needing to rehearse any more of the Church’s sordid past, let’s talk this morning about why the church is here in the first place, and what it looks like when serves it purpose well.

How could people who act in the name of Christ believe horrible actions represent Jesus? What Jesus had they come to know and believe in? Of course, there are many examples we could name through history of what happens when the church gets it wrong. Let's talk about when the church gets it right...
