A stiff back and aching leg can look like a simple lower spine problem until the real culprit hides higher up. We share Diane’s journey from conservative care to targeted injections and, finally, two precisely timed surgeries that unlocked lasting relief. Along the way, our interventional pain specialist and neurosurgeon walk through how they think, starting with imaging and exam, testing hypotheses with blocks and epidurals and only then decide whether surgery is the safest, most effective move.

You’ll hear how short-lived relief from medial branch blocks, rhizotomy, and epidural injections became a diagnostic signal, not a failure. The turning point came with a second MRI that revealed severe cervical stenosis compressing the spinal cord, an insight that explained leg symptoms and shifted priority to neck surgery first. We break down why the cervical spine often takes precedence, how operating where the danger is highest can also calm symptoms elsewhere and why “smallest effective surgery” often beats a bigger, hardware-heavy approach.

What should a 30-acre, 537,000-square-foot hospital become after a century of care? We sit down with Centra’s Denise Woernle, urban planner Suzanne Schulz, and Lynchburg’s economic development director, Marjette Upshur, to map a community-first path for reimagining Virginia Baptist Hospital. The conversation unpacks adaptive reuse in plain terms: listen first, decide later. Together, we walk through the process from January listening sessions to February goal-setting to a March community charrette designed to build trust, reduce surprise and turn lived experience into actionable plans.

We connect the study to Centra’s modernization plan, including new facilities coming online and service transitions that open space at VBH. Rather than let the campus go dark, the team explores how partnerships, potential tax incentives and careful market analysis can spark a viable future. With strong architecture, a prime location between downtown and Liberty University and a deeply personal legacy for neighbors and staff, VBH stands out as a rare chance to blend preservation with progress. We address the stakes plainly: an empty site drains value, while an engaged process can create jobs, honor history and keep the neighborhood vibrant.

A stronger primary care relationship can be the difference between constant crisis and steady health. That’s the throughline of our conversation with Dr. Detwiler, the incoming Director of Osteopathic Medicine at the CMG Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Detwiler brings rural roots, 25 years of family practice and a clear mission, to train physicians who treat mind, body and spirit while delivering measurable results for communities that need care the most.

We dig into what actually sets osteopathic medicine apart. It’s not a split from modern medicine. DOs are fully trained in the same diagnostics, procedures and specialties as MDs. The distinction is a disciplined focus on human connection, structure and function and the body’s capacity to heal with proper support. That lens changes the clinic room. Conversations include stress, sleep, work, beliefs and budget, because those factors drive adherence and outcomes. We also clear up misconceptions about OMT. Osteopathic manipulative treatment is a practical, hands-on tool for musculoskeletal issues, designed to complement medications and therapy, not replace them. At LFMR, we’re building a curriculum that helps residents provide OMT efficiently within standard visits.

There’s a bigger system story too. Healthcare is shifting toward value-based care, where metrics like blood pressure control, A1C levels, and vaccination rates matter. LFMR’s team-based model with residents, faculty, imaging, lab, OB care and social work under one roof makes it easier to close loops and lift those numbers. And the pipeline is real. By partnering with LUCOM and integrating trainees with local surgeons, hospitalists and specialists, we’re creating the relationships that encourage physicians to stay at Centra for their care. That means more access, shorter waits and care that feels personal and effective.

We’re also launching an OMT clinic at LFMR for patients seeking targeted help with back and musculoskeletal pain from an osteopathic perspective. If you’ve struggled to find a primary care provider who listens and coordinates, we’d love to meet you. Subscribe, share this episode with someone who needs a steady healthcare home, and leave a review to help more people discover whole-person primary care in Lynchburg.

Healthcare has entered the digital chat, and Centra’s step into digital registration and online self-scheduling shows our dedication to patient care. We sit down with Jen Halikman, our Vice President of IT Applications, to share how digital registration is rolling out now and how online self-scheduling lands in 2026. The focus is simple: give you control of check-in from your phone, reduce wait times and free our teams to spend more time on care and less on clerical tasks.

Jen walks us through the nuts and bolts that make this shift work. Digital registration streamlines intake, improves data accuracy, and cuts duplicate questions by syncing with our clinical, financial and revenue cycle systems. You’ll see the impact before you arrive: verified information, clear prompts and fewer bottlenecks at the front desk. When self-scheduling launches, you’ll be able to view real appointment options, get timely reminders and avoid no-shows with smarter notifications. For those nervous about finding the right entrance or clinic, geofencing and wayfinding will guide you from the parking lot to the correct desk like a map built for Centra, tuned to your visit.

We also talk about the bigger picture. A trustworthy digital front door lays the groundwork for virtual care, at-home monitoring and proactive disease management that surface insights faster and support better decisions. None of that replaces human care; it amplifies it. And if you prefer the traditional route, it’s still here, our teams will help you every step of the way, no matter your comfort with technology.

Ready to see how small digital steps add up to a better visit? Listen now, subscribe for updates on self-scheduling, and leave a review to tell us which feature you want us to build next.

What if the morning “I feel sick” isn’t a dodge but anxiety talking through the body? We invited two seasoned clinicians to unpack why elementary struggles often snowball in middle school, how neurological growth and puberty raise the stakes and what parents and educators can do to steady kids when the school day feels impossible. From the jump, we map the path from early reading gaps and executive function challenges to avoidance, nurse visits, and “I can’t go” battles then show how small, consistent supports flip the script.

Together, we break down clear signs of distress at home and in class, and we share practical tools kids can use without fanfare: diaphragmatic breathing, muscle relaxation, grounding, and a surprising ally, cold water, which can reset the nervous system. We talk about the cafeteria problem, test panic and the power of a quick hallway break paired with a plan. You’ll hear how to collaborate with school counselors and teachers even if your child doesn’t have an IEP or 504, plus how to decide when school-based help isn’t enough and it’s time to bring in a community clinician.

We also face the forces driving anxiety up: phones, group chats, and the way relational aggression now travels overnight; pandemic-era gaps that left students academically and socially off-balance; and the upside of better awareness and diagnosis. We share ways to monitor content early, build trust toward teen autonomy, protect sleep with real screen limits, and set family “no-cell” windows that everyone follows. If you’re navigating anxious mornings, tough afternoons, or questions about when to seek care, this conversation offers clear signals, actionable strategies and local pathways to help.

If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs it, and leave a review with one takeaway you’ll try this week. Your story might help another family find calm.

The school day doesn’t start at the first bell, it starts the night before, inside group chats where one message can snowball into a full day of distraction. We sat down with counselors from Lynchburg City Schools to unpack what kids are carrying into class: anxiety amplified by social media, conflicts that live on through phones and the quiet ways embarrassment and fear shape learning. Together, we chart a realistic path through the noise with a focus on practical supports, not panic.

Technology is both helper and hazard in schools. Chromebooks streamline learning and accountability, yet blur lines between schoolwork and entertainment. Off-and-away policies help, but counselors explain how last night’s chat still enters the room, fueling late nights, missed breakfasts and frayed attention. The through line is steady anxiety, intensified by a world where small mistakes can travel far and live online.

You’ll hear candid guidance for parents: search the phone, learn the apps and lean in during middle school rather than stepping back. We also open the door on safety partnerships, how School Resource Officers build trust and join threat assessments and how counselors coordinate crisis evaluations with hospitals, therapists and community behavioral health when self‑harm risk appears. Reentry plans, discharge notes and communication help students regain footing after a hospital stay, with academics following health.

If you’re a parent, educator, or community partner, this conversation offers grounded strategies to share the load kids are carrying clear boundaries, consistent check‑ins and a team approach that keeps dignity at the center. Listen, share with a friend who needs it, and leave a review to help more families find practical support.

Most people are told to “try harder” while fighting a disease their biology is trying to keep. We sit down with bariatric surgeon Dr. Joshua Alley to cut through stigma and explain how modern metabolic care actually works: minimally invasive procedures, powerful new medications, and a full-circle support system that treats obesity as the chronic condition it is. The goal isn’t a number on a scale; it’s better health, more energy and more years with the people you love.

We break down the options in plain language. You’ll hear what distinguishes sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and the SADI procedure, why today’s surgical risks are similar to gallbladder surgery and where GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide fit. We talk criteria beyond raw pounds, including BMI and conditions like sleep apnea, diabetes and hypertension. If you’ve wondered whether surgery is “the easy way out,” you’ll get the uncomfortable truth: patients work hard before and after, and long-term success depends on nutrition, sleep, movement and consistent follow-up.

Ready to explore your path? Start with your primary care clinician or self-refer to the bariatric or medical weight management team. If this conversation helps reframe your thinking, follow the show, share with someone who needs hopeful facts, and leave a review to tell us what you want to hear next.

The headlines are loud, the mailers are confusing and the clock is ticking. We’re making one thing simple: Centra will leave the Humana Medicare Advantage network on January 1, 2026, and you can protect your care by choosing the right plan during open enrollment.

With our Chief Revenue Officer, Robert Boos, we walk through exactly who’s affected, how this differs from traditional “red, white, and blue” Medicare and why TRICARE members are not impacted. We break down the real-world impact of Medicare Advantage: prior authorization delays that stall MRIs and CT scans, high first-pass denial rates on emergency claims and why those practices can lead to surprise “late” bills months after a visit. You’ll learn why many health systems nationwide are rethinking Medicare Advantage contracts and how payment shortfalls and administrative hurdles make it harder to deliver timely care.

Most importantly, we focus on action. If you’re on Humana Medicare Advantage and want to keep your Centra doctors, you don’t need a new clinician you need a new plan. Use open enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7) to switch to a Centra-participating Medicare Advantage plan like Anthem, Aetna, or UnitedHealthcare, or return to traditional Medicare with a Part D prescription plan. We share tips for confirming drug coverage, avoiding gaps on January 1, and keeping existing appointments on track. Emergencies remain covered by law, but routine care depends on your plan choice, so make the move now.

Ready to take the next step? Visit centrahealth.com/humana for FAQs and resources, and call our customer service at 434.200.3777 if you have billing questions or need help understanding your claim. If this conversation helped, subscribe, share with a friend who’s choosing a plan, and leave a review to help others find clear guidance.

A frightening diagnosis can steal the air from a room. Nicole’s story gives it back. From the shock of hearing “breast cancer” to the rhythm of surgery, sixteen chemo infusions and now the daily focus of radiation, she lets us into the real work of getting through it: making plans, asking for help and finding bright spots inside the hard days. As a mother of two and a community leader, she talks candidly about fear, the weight of uncertainty and the simple rituals that brought her peace.

Those bright spots include a calm, golden-furred constant: April Sweetie, a therapy dog who turns infusion rooms into gentler spaces. With handler Larry, April visits cancer centers, ICUs and children’s hospitals, offering a few minutes of ease to patients and the clinicians who care for them. We explore how therapy animals reduce anxiety and boost morale for healthcare teams who often need support as much as the people they treat. April’s own journey from a breeding farm to hospital hallways mirrors the transformation that happens when care becomes truly human.

A tumor that seemed to “smile” back in a flashlight’s glare set Jamie Day on a year-long path that tested his body, rewired his priorities, and strengthened every bond that mattered. From the first uneasy swallow after a film festival to the bell that marked the end of treatment, we walk through the raw, funny, and fiercely grateful choices that kept him moving: asking for all the blankets, blasting Mongolian thrash during radiation, and letting two devoted service dogs turn sterile rooms into safe places.

HPV-positive squamous cell throat cancer came with good odds and brutal treatment, seven weeks of radiation and chemo that burned, thinned his beard, and made food a battle. Jamie made a decision early: he wouldn’t “sad sack” the process. He made the clinic a stage for levity, and the staff met him there. Techs leaned in for the day’s soundtrack. Nurses became guides. A nurse advocate unraveled insurance knots at midnight. Front desk faces remembered his name, his jokes, and his dogs. Along the way, he forged symbols to fight by: art of himself on horseback charging the “meatball with tentacles,” a homemade “war hammer,” and the image of two opponents calmly sipping poison until one quits.

The through line is simple and strong: choose who you’ll be when life breaks, let people help, laugh when you can, and ring the bell for everyone still in the fight. If this story moved you, follow the show, share it with someone who needs a lift, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway so more people can find it.

A routine mammogram set off a chain of decisions Erin Hagen never expected to make at 40. What the radiology report called DCIS felt both urgent and confusing, and the days that followed were a blur of consults, terminology and timelines. We sit down with Erin and Dr. Christina Canzoneri from Centra’s plastic and reconstructive surgery team to unpack how you move from a diagnosis to a plan you can live with.

We walk through choosing a bilateral mastectomy, weighing immediate versus delayed reconstruction and confronting the fear of anesthesia and drains more than the incisions themselves. Dr. Canzoneri breaks down what breast reconstruction really involves, tissue expanders, fills, implants, healing windows, and addresses the biggest misconceptions, including insurance coverage that’s federally required after mastectomy, symmetry procedures on the other breast, and why “elective” doesn’t mean “cosmetic.”

Erin shares the practical wins that eased the hardest days: a nurse navigator who translated options, local appointments five minutes from home, and a surgical team that showed up with skill and small kindnesses, even holding her hand as the anesthesia set in.

If you’re navigating DCIS, early breast cancer, or simply deciding when to book your first mammogram, this conversation offers clear guidance and grounded hope. You’ll hear how to ask better questions, what to expect from recovery, how follow-ups with expanders work and how to coordinate care across surgery, oncology, radiation, genetics and imaging. Most of all, you’ll hear why proximity, transparency and trust can transform a scary season into a path back to normal life.

Misinformation surrounds vaping, despite its growing presence in our everyday lives. These sleek, rechargeable devices deliver not just fruit-flavored satisfaction but a potent cocktail of nicotine (sometimes exceeding levels found in cigarettes) and numerous carcinogenic chemicals.

The health implications are particularly alarming for younger users. Nicotine rewires developing brains, compromising focus, memory, and impulse control. The physical toll extends throughout the body as blood vessels constrict, raising blood pressure, the "silent killer" increasing risks of stroke and heart attack. Cardiac arrhythmias become more likely as nicotine stimulates the heart, potentially creating deadly complications.

For those already caught in nicotine's grip, hope exists through multiple channels. The 1-800-QUIT-NOW hotline offers traditional support, while texting options cater to younger users who prefer digital communication. Seven FDA-approved medications can ease the transition away from dependency, especially when paired with mental health support, the combination proven most effective for breaking the cycle.

Quitting delivers surprisingly swift rewards: normalized blood pressure within an hour and regenerated taste buds within days. These immediate benefits offer powerful motivation for anyone contemplating cessation. As Abigail compassionately notes, "We all have our thing," acknowledging the challenge of breaking any habit while emphasizing the critical importance of finding healthier alternatives to the triggers that lead to vaping.

Visit the CDC website for comprehensive resources tailored to users, parents, and educators. Your journey toward better health might begin with just one decision: putting down the vape and picking up the facts.

"Your periods shouldn't be unbearably painful. Most women in their 50s will experience dryness. Muscle mass matters more than being thin." These are just some of the straightforward truths nurse midwife Claire McStacy shares in this comprehensive conversation about women's health through the decades.

From establishing care in your twenties to navigating the changes of menopause, this episode cuts through the noise of trending TikTok videos to deliver practical guidance on what's actually happening in your body and what you can do about it. McStacy brings 23 years of experience to address questions many women have but don't know who to ask: When should cervical cancer screening begin? (Age 21.) What does perimenopause actually feel like? (Brain fog, irregular periods, and possibly up to ten years of symptoms.) How do hormones affect your heart health after menopause? (Significantly, women lose estrogen's protective effects, making heart attack risk similar to men's, though symptoms present differently.)

The conversation tackles critical but often overlooked topics, including PCOS (affecting 8% of women), the importance of preconception health, managing fibroids (particularly common among African American women) and the benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy. Throughout, McStacy emphasizes the importance of establishing and maintaining a relationship with your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

Perhaps most powerfully, this episode challenges listeners to prioritize self-care at every stage of life. As McStacy notes, "When you have time for yourself, you have time for everybody else." Whether you're concerned about fertility in your twenties, managing work-life balance in your thirties, noticing perimenopausal symptoms in your forties or navigating post-menopausal changes in your fifties, this comprehensive guide helps you understand what's normal, when to seek help and how to advocate for your health.

Nurse Practitioner Cody Sliger reveals the hidden crisis in men's healthcare through both professional expertise and personal experience. Despite significant advances in medical science, men continue to suffer worse health outcomes than women, largely because they avoid seeking help until it's too late.

The conversation dives deep into why this happens. Harvard research confirms that societal expectations of masculinity directly contribute to higher mortality rates when men eventually reach hospitals with chronic conditions. When seeking help is viewed as weakness, and when work schedules make healthcare appointments financially impossible, men face an impossible choice between immediate family needs and their own wellbeing.

Whether you're concerned about your own health or someone you care about, this episode provides vital insights that could literally save lives. Reach out, speak up, and remember that seeking help isn't weakness—it's the strongest choice you can make.

Carol Harvey's powerful journey from experienced nurse to breast cancer survivor offers a unique dual perspective that changes everything.

Carol shares her unexpected triple-negative breast cancer diagnosis in September 2020 during the height of COVID restrictions when family couldn't accompany her to treatments. With 35 years of nursing experience and a role teaching future nurses at Liberty University, Carol brought professional knowledge to her patient experience that provided both advantages and surprising challenges.

Her decision to join a clinical trial stands as perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this conversation. Despite her medical background, Carol experienced the vulnerability all patients feel when considering experimental treatments. The outcome? Extraordinary monitoring that included multiple echocardiograms, rapid tumor response, and a comprehensive team approach that left her feeling exceptionally well-cared for. "If I were to go through the whole thing again, I would jump into a clinical trial again, 100%," she reflects.

Through chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and even cognitive therapy for "chemo brain," Carol's journey spans numerous departments within Centra Health. Now three years post-treatment with regular follow-ups, she finds herself transformed. "I am such a better person on this side of cancer than I was beforehand," she reveals, describing a deeper faith, greater empathy, and profound perspective shift that turns even "bad hair days" into moments of gratitude. Her powerful closing message resonates for anyone facing difficult circumstances: "I can do hard things." Listen now to experience this remarkable story of professional insight meeting personal transformation.

Crystal Collette and Jennifer Watson Jamison share their journey to achieving Autism Commission on Quality accreditation for Centra's Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy program and explain how modern ABA helps children with autism through individualized, evidence-based approaches.

What exactly is ABA therapy? As Jennifer explains, it's fundamentally "the science of learning" that addresses everything from communication and social skills to emotional regulation and self-help abilities. Modern approaches have moved away from older error-based methods to "errorless teaching," where children are shown the correct response from the beginning, resulting in faster learning and less frustration.

For parents feeling overwhelmed by an autism diagnosis, the team offers this reassurance: "Take a breath... We're in this together. We will figure it out." Visit Centra's website to learn more about autism services and take that first step toward understanding if ABA might be right for your child.

Cami Smith:

Welcome to Centra Scripts. Here we talk about health, wellness, and practical tips for your everyday life. I am your host, Cami Smith.

Hi, and welcome to Centra Scripts. My name is Cami Smith and I am your host. And I am here today with Dr. Travis Engel, who is the chair of pediatrics here at Centra. And we are going to dive into the fact, the fiction, all of the things we need to know about RSV. Because it is sweeping across not just our community, it's sweeping across the nation. We're kind of at a critical point. And so we're going to have you share all of your wisdom with us. But before we dig into that, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself and what brought you here to Centra?

Dr. Travis Engel:

Yeah, absolutely. So my wife and I, and our three kids actually relocated back in July for this position. I graduated in Liberty University's first medical school class.

Cami Smith:

Very cool.

Dr. Travis Engel:

So I was here from 2014 to 2018, and we always knew this was a place we kind of wanted to come back to. After that, briefly stopped in Chicago for three years and did my residency there in Northern Chicago, which was a great experience. And then I have some additional fellowship training in pediatric critical care, which I got at Children's Mercy in Kansas City Missouri, which is an amazing hospital. So the ability to wrap that experience back up and come back here and work here in the community that really kind of started my medical education is really neat and it's an exciting time for our family.

Cami Smith:

You love the Lynchburg area. Great place for our family. What are some of your favorite things about Lynchburg?

Dr. Travis Engel:

Oh my goodness. The view. I mean, I always tell people there's really just not a bad place to look in the city.

Cami Smith:

There's not.

Dr. Travis Engel:

And also getting to really reengage with the medical students over at Liberty and kind of start giving back to that school that, like I said, launched my medical career has been really neat.

Cami Smith:

So do you go back? Oh, that's right. You said you teach there.

Dr. Travis Engel:

Yeah, so I'm actually adjunct faculty over at the medical school now, so it's really kind of come full circle for us. It's been really great. And I think a lot of people don't realize here in the community that we actually have kind of an academic medical center. I mean, yeah, we really do. We have medical students, students, nursing students, and we're doing a lot of medical education there.

Cami Smith:

That's really cool. So why Centra?

Dr. Travis Engel:

Well, I mean, number one, the area. I think we wanted to come back to this area. Number two, just I would really emphasize the culture of yes there. There's a lot of programs and a lot of things I wanted to do when I came back to Centra and a lot of things I wanted to bring back with me. And the organization as a whole has been super enthusiastic about engaging on all fronts in addition to the fact that I think there is such a community need to have a pediatric resource like Centra for pediatric inpatient care. Here so that families don't have to go 45 minutes to an hour away to get pediatric care. So that's really important to me, keeping families close to home, getting them better here, not sending them an hour away for services that we can offer easily in this community.

Cami Smith:

Welcome to Centra Scripts. Here we talk about health, wellness, and practical tips for your everyday life. I'm your host, Cami Smith.

Hi, and welcome to Centra Scripts. My name is Cami Smith, and I am here with two wonderful nurses who are going to celebrate with me today. We're going to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. And so today I have with me Debbie and Brenda. And Brenda is actually a nurse practitioner, correct?

Brenda:

Correct.

Cami Smith:

Okay. A neonatal nurse practitioner.

Brenda:

Yes.

Cami Smith:

And then Debbie is a bedside nurse, registered nurse over in the intensive care unit. Correct?

Debbie:

Yes.

Cami Smith:

Okay. So I'm so excited that you guys have taken your time to come and share your story. I mean, I'm assuming you haven't been there for 50 years. Neither of you look old enough to be there for 50 years, but the time that you have spent there I'm sure has made such a huge impact on you. It's such a special place. So we'll start with Brenda. Can you just tell us a little bit about yourself, your position, what you do here at Centra?

Brenda:

Okay. My history with Centra and Virginia Baptist Hospital has been longstanding. Way back, I was actually born at Virginia Baptist Hospital and Dr. Peter Houck, who pioneered our unit and started it in October 2nd of 1972, was actually my private pediatrician as a child.

Cami Smith:

I love that so much.

Brenda:

So little did I know then that his work and efforts would influence my own career path. So I graduated from Lynchburg College, now called the University of Lynchburg and was employed by Centra in May of 1984. At that time there were no positions available in our intensive care nursery. So I was hired for coronary care unit at Virginia Baptist Hospital. I did speak directly with the CEO of Centra at that time, because I was very interested in having a position in the intensive care nursery and he promised me that if a position became available that they would transfer me.

Cami Smith:

Wow.

Brenda:

So he actually kept his promise and I was only two months into my orientation in July of 1984 that I was transferred to the intensive care nursery and I have been there ever since.

Cami Smith:

Okay. What was that like to step into this place you've wanted to work for so long, somewhere in a place where you were born? What was that like to start on that first day?

Brenda:

Scary. I knew I had only had one day of orientation as a nursing student in the intensive care nursery and I knew that it was a different field of medicine from any other field that existed and nothing that I got any training on or education with in school. But I just knew that I was better suited for the tiniest of patients. Adults were just too big for me. Coronary care unit was scarier than the intensive care nursery.

Cami Smith:

I can imagine. Okay. Debbie, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to work at Centra?

Debbie:

Well, I graduated in 1985 from the Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing, which is now Centra School of Nursing. And I thought I wanted to work with babies in the newborn nursery. I had no orientation to the intensive care nursery at all, so I didn't know much about that. But unlike Brenda, they had no positions available anywhere except for in the inte

Welcome to Centra Scripts. Here we talk about health, wellness, and practical tips for your everyday life. I am your host, Cami Smith.

Hi, and welcome to Centra Scripts. My name is Cami Smith and I am here with Donna Lloyd, and we are in obviously a little bit of a different setting. We are in the Mammo Van. So the Mammo Van is a mobile mammography unit that will park in various places around our health system to ensure that women getting their mammogram appointments in place is as easy and as accessible as possible. And so, Donna has been driving this Mammo Van for...

Donna Lloyd:

21 years.

Cami Smith:

21 years. And so, she plays such a large role as women come in. So me, I had my first mammogram for the first time ever today, and you were the first person I saw. You helped me feel comfortable, you helped me feel at ease. You play a big role in this.

Donna Lloyd:

Yes, I do.

Cami Smith:

I want you to tell us a little bit about that. But first, tell us a little bit about you. How did you come to be a part of the Mammo Van unit?

Donna Lloyd:

Actually, I drove a school bus for Campbell County four years prior to that.

Cami Smith:

Oh, okay.

Donna Lloyd:

But I've been with Centra off and on since I was in high school. I started out in radiology as a receptionist.

Cami Smith:

Oh, okay.

Donna Lloyd:

Yeah. And then I finished high school, and then I started driving a school bus and I saw this.

Cami Smith:

Yeah.

Donna Lloyd:

So I applied for it and I got it.

Cami Smith:

I love it.

Donna Lloyd:

We used to have an old, it was a box, more like a box truck.

Cami Smith:

Like a trailer?

Donna Lloyd:

No, it was like-

Cami Smith:

Oh, like the Pace vans.

Donna Lloyd:

Yes. It's a box truck.

Cami Smith:

Yes.

Donna Lloyd:

I would drive, sit up front, and then I'd have to get outside to go to the back. But here, I could just walk.

Cami Smith:

Yeah. This is very nice.

Donna Lloyd:

We've had this since 2016.

Cami Smith:

Oh, wow.

Donna Lloyd:

Yeah.

Cami Smith:

So what would a woman do, how do you get an appointment for the Mamm Van?

Donna Lloyd:

It just depends. We go to a lot of the outlying communities. They want the dates, we give them the dates, and we send them schedules.

Cami Smith:

Okay.

Donna Lloyd:

And once a month, we go to a lot of places once a month.

Cami Smith:

Okay.

Donna Lloyd:

And businesses, we go to businesses and same thing, they've got a certain person that will take care of that schedule.

Cami Smith:

Got you.

Donna Lloyd:

They'll get all the information from the patients. And a week prior to them coming to us, we call to get an updated schedule. So, once the day we come, we go to that site, I'll go in and I'll do everything that I've got to do and then they just have their appointment times and they just come on that day.

Cami Smith:

Okay.

Donna Lloyd:

Does that make sense?

Cami Smith:

Yeah, absolutely. And it's so convenient. So, this van right now is in the parking lot of the building where I work. I was able to come in, park, put my stuff in, and then just walk outside to do something that is so important, and it's so vital for women as they'

Welcome to Centra Scripts. Here, we talk about health, wellness, and practical tips for your everyday life. I'm your host, Cami Smith.

Welcome to Centra Scripts. I am your host, Cami Smith, and I am here with Dr. Pavalonis, who is a vascular surgeon here at Centra. The reason we're here discussing today is because the month of September is peripheral vascular disease awareness month, and so we want to bring some highlight, some awareness around what that is because I know, for me, this is not something I have encountered in my personal life, and maybe those of you who are listening are not aware of what that is or how it's impacting maybe even those around you. And so we're going to go ahead and jump in. Dr. Pavalonis, thank you so much for being here today and for having this conversation with us. Why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself first, before we jump in?

Dr. Pavalonis:

Well, I'm a vascular surgeon here in Lynchburg, Virginia. I love being here. This is my third year of practice within our fine city. We have a very busy practice. Peripheral vascular disease is very prevalent in this area and something that we have a lot of work to do on.

Cami Smith:

That's incredible. See, I had no idea that it was so prevalent. Explain to us what exactly is peripheral vascular disease?

Dr. Pavalonis:

Peripheral vascular disease is impaired blood flow primarily to the lower extremities, mainly in the legs, that can cause all sorts of uncomfortable and potentially life threatening problems such as limb loss, lifestyle limiting factors, and a whole host of other things. It can also be indicative of other more serious problems like heart disease, cerebral vascular disease, stroke type things.

Cami Smith:

Goodness, so not only could it be something that somebody just has that they're walking through as a disease in their life, but it's also an indication of maybe something a little bit deeper.

Dr. Pavalonis:

Correct.

Cami Smith:

Okay. Is this something that they're born with, that they have, it's in their genetics, or is this something that, like you said, can come at later, or both?

Dr. Pavalonis:

It really seems to be a lot of lifestyle-type decisions and problems, but there's also a hereditary component as well that can affect some people. Taking control of diabetes, high blood pressure, quitting smoking, modifiable-type factors can be very helpful in potentially avoiding this, but then there are also some hereditary issues that folks can suffer with and can develop this through sometimes no fault of their own.

Cami Smith:

So interesting. I feel like we have conversations about a lot of the things that we treat here at Centra, and so many of them come back to lifestyle, come back to things like smoking, come back to things like eating healthy, getting up and exercising. It really blows my mind how much just having an active and healthy lifestyle can clear up some of these things that can creep in if you're not careful.

Dr. Pavalonis:

Oh, absolutely.

Cami Smith:

Would you agree?

Dr. Pavalonis:

Oh yes. A lot of these things, just watching what you eat, regularly following up with your doctor, not smoking, those types of things are very, very important in avoiding this type of problem with peripheral vascular disease.

Cami Smith:

Okay. So what are some symptoms? If this is not something that you have had your whole life, what are some very clear symptoms that are triggers or indications that it's time to go get checked out?

Dr. Pavalonis:

It can sometimes start out very benign, maybe achy legs with walking a little bit that gets better with resting, but it can be progressive to the point where a person can develop ulcers, have very terrible pain even when they're just sitting down at rest or sleeping, and it can be a ve

Welcome to Centra Scripts. Here we talk about health, wellness and practical tips for your everyday life. I'm your host Cami Smith.

Hi, and welcome to Centra Scripts. I am here with a team from our Centra Bridges Treatment Center and we're celebrating the 35th anniversary. When is the 35th anniversary?

Dr. John Hendrickson:

I guess, technically, it was in June.

Cami Smith:

It was in June, but we're celebrating all year long.

Dr. John Hendrickson:

Right. We're going to, I think, have a celebration sometime in August.

Cami Smith:

I love that. Okay. So as we're anticipating the celebration, we want to give you a little bit of an inside view of the history of Bridges, some of the big moments in accomplishments and amazing things that have been accomplished treating children who have gone through traumatic experiences. But you all can speak to that much better than I can, so I'm going to let them introduce themselves and we'll start on the end with Dr. John Hendrickson.

Dr. John Hendrickson:

Hi, I'm John Hendrickson. I'm the medical director. I'm a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Bridges Treatment Center. I joined Centra in 1997, so I recently celebrated my 25th anniversary with Bridges. And when I joined in '97, Bridges was 10 years old and, at that time, was just opening its third cottage, which was known as Ivy Cottage. And so, I joined Dr. Shilling, the previous medical director, to try to expand the census there at that time. Subsequently, we got as big as five cottages and 102 beds. We're working considerably smaller than that presently. But that's my story and how long I've been there. I have not been there as long as these other two gentlemen, so they can tell you more of the early history than I can.

Cami Smith:

All right.

Cray Callahan:

Wow, early history. I'm Cray Callahan, the principal of the school program at Bridges. Obviously, the kids live there and they have to go to school there. I started there in January 1990, actually working in one of the two cottages at that time. We only had Chimney and Cedar, and I was working third shift, working on my master's in special education. And I did not know that I would stay at Bridges that long after I completed my master's, but a teaching position became available. The director at the time said, "I hear you have a teaching certification." And I said, Yes," and I rolled into a position and have been there ever since.

Cami Smith:

The rest is history. Wow. All right, and Mark.

Mark Bosher:

Yeah, I'm Mark Bosher. I started at Bridges back in December 1992, but I came for a little bit different reason. I loved fishing and I called Aaron Ruley up, who was one of the therapists at Bridges at the time. And he was getting ready to leave for Michigan, and I said, "Do you guys have a place there?" So I jumped on board and started fishing at the lake, and really enjoyed that whole feature of being able to get some of my dreams met. I started as a therapist doing individual therapy, as well as family therapy. And it has been a love of my life. I've really enjoyed working at Bridges the whole entire time. I've got lots of different aspects that we did while we were there.

When I started, we were just leaving from a substance abuse program, so I started doing group with kids that had codependency and dual diagnosed, and that was very challenging to do that. I'd worked up in Charlottesville, in a hospital that treated the same types of kids as well. It's been very, very unique in the whole process of coming on board and enjoying my practice there.

Cami Smith:

Wow. Well, it sounds like each of you have had a very rewarding experience at Bridges. So let's rewind a little bit, and could one of you, maybe we can start with you, John. Can you tell us what is Brid
