Welcome to the Visual Storytelling podcast. Let’s discuss why digital camera produce more noise in low light than film camera’s.
Digital cameras and film cameras behave differently in low light situations due to the nature of their technology. While they may have the same sensor size and ISO rating, the underlying processes create variations in noise.

Previously I discussed the importance of documentary photography both as an individual, and as a business. Today, let’s take a look at some of the businesses that can benefit from documentary photography.
Documentary photography can benefit a wide range of businesses, particularly those seeking to capture and convey authentic stories, experiences, or brand narratives.
The list we are about to explore is not exhaustive.
There are many other types of businesses that can benefit from photography. I would go as far to say, that in fact, all businesses can benefit from documenting their processes and general lifestyle. But today, I’ve narrowed this down and focused on just five.
1. Nonprofit organisations
2. Travel and hospitality industry
3. Retail and e-commerce
4. Food industry
5. Events and conferences

Welcome to Visual Storytelling, let’s discuss the importance of documentary photography, both as an individual, and as a business.
Documentary photography plays a crucial role in our society for several reasons. First and foremost, it serves as a powerful tool for capturing and preserving moments in history, documenting significant events, cultures, and social issues. By freezing a moment in time, documentary photographs provide a visual record that helps us understand and remember the past.
Documentary photography holds significant importance in the business world for various reasons. In this episode I discuss in further detail the following areas.
Marketing and Branding
Storytelling
Building Trust
Documentation and Reporting
Corporate Social Responsibility.
Overall, documentary photography in business serves as a powerful tool for marketing, branding, storytelling, building trust, documentation, and showcasing corporate social responsibility. It adds depth, authenticity, and visual impact to a business's communication strategy, contributing to its overall success and reputation.

In a previous episode I said, “it’s worth considering the type of memory card you will need as well, as the performance of this will have an impact on the experience when trying to choose between camera or lens.” So I thought I’d explain in a little more detail what I mean by this.
When starting out in either photography or videography, there is so much to wrap your minds around, so hopefully this has served, in some way, as clarity surrounding memory cards and helped you narrow down which may be best suited to the type of photography or videography you do.

You’ve had a professional video made to promote your business or brand. Now it’s time to capitalise on this.
Before I get into this episode there’s one question that you need to be asking yourself.
“Am I using video to promote either yourself, and / or your business.”
If you haven’t started to incorporate video yet, hopefully you found this insightful and will see the benefits of doing so, and begin to incorporate video into your strategy for 2023 and beyond. Let me know how you get on, I’m genuinely interested to hear about the successes as well as the stumbling blocks.
For those who are already incorporating video, I’d also be interested to learn about the hurdles you have confronted and how you overcame them, as this will assist those less experienced as they progress upon their video content creating journey.
After all, we are a community, talking with like minded individuals is how we grow, develop, inspire and be inspired.
This is the purpose of why I put these podcasts together.

Knowing which settings to use can be confusing, and to a certain extent takes the fun out of photography. The ability in deciding which setting to choose can have on how the shot looks can make the difference between an average photo and an awesome one, which is why it is important you know and understand how to use your camera.

The question for this episode…. Which would you be better off starting out with as a hobby photographer, a good lens on a mediocre camera or a mediocre lens on a good camera?
In order to best answer this question will depend on the type of photography you’re interested in. My initial thought would be to spend more on the lens over that of the camera body. My advice would be to figure out what type of photography you would like to do.

Is leasing camera equipment practical for a beginner photographer?
I’m going to say yes, however, only in the short term.
Leasing equipment is a great option if you want to try before you buy, but not something I feel you should be looking at as an alternative to owning your equipment. Take advantage of companies who lease equipment to identify what you use, and then go ahead and purchase your own.

How often you format your memory cards is personal choice. Personally, I tend to do this when preparing my kit before each assignment. If I’m simply taking photos for myself then I tend not to bother doing it each time, but what I don’t want to happen when working with clients is for my card to slow down, become full way before it should because of the amount of unseen storage space being occupied or worse, failing altogether.
Assignments can be stressful enough, it doesn’t matter whether it’s your first one or your one hundredth, your reputation is everything, so don’t let something as basic as not formatting your memory cards damage that.

Why should you be documenting your day.
Because we’ve been doing it for years.
Because without photography, there is no history.
Showcasing your working environment forms that unconscious attachment with a client. The moment they step through your door, they already feel familiar with their surroundings, because they recognise it, even if it’s the first time they've stepped foot through the door, they already feel comfortable.
If you’re a creative who works from home, showing your work environment may not fit this narrative. This is ok, there are still aspects of what you do that you should showcase. Possibly a time-lapse of you editing a video or a photograph. An insight of the process you go through to achieve the end result. Behind the scenes photos or short videos can be really impactive.
This, is the power, of documenting your day.
BE CREATIVE. BE INSPIRED. BE YOU.

Like a lot of people, at the beginning of the New Year I set out what I would like to achieve during 2023, not resolutions, as lets be honest, how many of us actually stick to the resolutions we set ourselves? No, I set goals.
I only have to look at the content list I created at the beginning of the year to see the reality of just how distracted I’ve become during the first three months of 2023.
So it’s time to reset, realign my focus, and push myself to my limits, after all, it is through constantly pushing our own boundaries that we develop our skills and become better at what we do.

When starting out upon your creative journey it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to try everything and buying the best equipment before you identify the niche that you will focus on. We all do it, so don’t think you’re alone in this.
If you’re just starting out, my advice would be to restrain yourself from doing so. There are some great deals out there for starter packs that you can get your teeth into and hone your skill set.
However, if you’re producing video content, the one thing I would suggest that goes against this grain is invest in a good microphone.

From photographer to model to photojournalist, Lee Miller will be played by Kate Winslet on the big screen. But who is Lee Miller?

I recently discovered MidJourneyAi, an independent research lab exploring new mediums of thought and expanding the imaginative powers of the human species. They are a small self-funded team focused on design, human infrastructure, and AI.
And quite frankly I’ve been having a lot of fun messing about with it.
Despite the outrage by some, I believe that AI is most definitely going to be a part of our future, how it is going to be best used remains to be seen, however from the brief time I’ve been playing with it I can see it already has the potential to have a broad landscape. How we use it is really up to us, but to dismiss it, I think is naive. For those who believe this is something that is fake and feel threatened by it taking your livelihood, I would say this. In order to remain current you must adapt and evolve to the changes around you. Don’t simply ignore this advancement, instead embrace it to enhance your skillset, it is after all just another tool available to us, enabling us to take a vision and produce something tangible.

Before we look at the list we have to ask ourselves 2 questions.
Here are 5 things to consider before making that decision.
1. Screen quality matters
Choose a screen that has IPS display tech. IPS monitors or “In-Plane Switching” monitors, leverage liquid crystals aligned in parallel to produce rich colors.
2. Speedy storage
An SSD (solid state drive) is a must in any new laptop. 512GB is a minimum if you’re working with 4K video.
3. Graphic novelty
Dedicated graphics cards are great for gaming, but they’re not a necessity for photo editing. Today’s processors can more than adequately deliver for photo editing. However, if you edit video as well, then you may wish to consider a graphics card as this will only improve the experience.
4. Which processor (CPU)?
Typically, laptop and desktop chips have two or four cores (known as dual-core and quad-core). Some newer models have six and even eight. The more cores, the better, because it allows your computer to run multiple tasks at the same time without slowing down.
https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/laptops/article/intel-processors-explained-what-is-core-i3-i5-i7-and-pentium-av6235O66IQP
5. Mac or PC?
This is very much a marmite subject. You’re either a Mac or a PC.
What laptop do you use or recommend, and why? Let me know in the comments or you can tweet me @GaryFernon.

If you’re just starting out and haven’t yet established yourself, the impact of this can have two detrimental implications. Price yourself too high and no-one will book you, because you haven’t established yourself and proven that you are worth the price you are commanding. Price yourself too low and people won’t book you because they think that you’re cheap and won’t have confidence in your ability.
If you follow this simple method, this will help you identify where you need to be, at least in the beginning. Once you have built your portfolio and the awareness surrounding what you can do, then you can start charging the big bucks.

Do you use a graphics tablet for editing photos?
Are you considering using one but don’t know where to start?
Graphics tablets and stylus pens are not just for artists and illustrators! The best drawing tablet is also a great way to edit photos in Photoshop or Lightroom.
The following 13 tablets listed below have been compiled by Digital Camera World. Bear in mind what I said earlier, just because one is listed as number 1 and another 13, doesn’t mean that it is necessarily better, or worse. You may find that a tablet listed somewhere in the middle is the best fit for you. So, lets’ take a look at Digital Camera Worlds list from 1 to 13.

Not so long ago to get 2 terabytes of storage you'd need a thumping-great 3.5-inch mechanical hard disk drive.
However, Japanese company Kioxia Corporation claim to have produced a working prototype of a 2TB microSDXC card.
If, like me, you haven’t heard of Kioxia Corporation before, I’ve included a link to their website so you can learn more about them.
What are your initial thoughts on a 2TB microSDXC card? Let me know by either leaving a comment or tweeting me @GaryFernon.

I stumbled upon Urth while searching for a variable ND filter for my Lumix G80 and why I chose them over other providers was in part because of their mission. With 8 layer nano-coating, no colour cast, 1 to 8.66 f/stops and a lifetime guarantee, the decision was really quite simple.
Check out their story - https://uk.urth.co/pages/pacifico

Is Vero the new Instagram?
Instagram is no longer a platform for photography, confirmed by the company head, Adam Mosseri. Instead focusing more on video content over that of stills, and beginning to feel more like TikTok than what it once was. I accept that in order to survive you have to be able to adapt to the changing landscape, and as James Sinclair says, “innovate or evaporate”, but to what cost?
Q. Have you made the switch? Let me know if you have, or haven’t and why.

Welcome to this episode of Visual Storytelling, with me Gary Fernon, where I’m looking at the new drone from DJI.
The starting price for the DJI Avata is £989, but don’t get caught out as the extra’s such as controller and goggles come separately. Despite this I am still seriously tempted. It will definitely be going on my wish list.
It would be fair to say, whether you’re a photographer or videographer, the inclusion of drone footage is a must have within your business today. As James Sinclair says, “Innovate or evaporate.”
I’d love to hear your thoughts on not only the Avata, but drone footage in general. Do you already include this within your portfolios, are you considering including it. Would you consider the new offering from DJI, or do you favour an alternative brand. I’m genuinely interested to hear your experiences.

Deciding on how to price yourself can be an absolute brain ache. Charge too much and people expect the unachievable, charge too little and people overlook you believing you're not capable. In this episode I break down the math of a recent wedding I shot and give you insight on the things to consider, especially if you're new to wedding photography, so that you can price yourself according to your value from the start.

The world of photography is subjective. It is also a world that is accessible to all. Don't compare yourself to anyone other than yourself but continue to strive to be better than you were the day before. Hopefully you will find inspiration in this episode, inspiration to push your own creative boundaries and feel confident enough to try new things. Do it for yourself and not for the accolade of others.

The process of documenting our daily lives is now very much the norm, sometimes we do this without thinking about it. Consider this, when you take that photo of yourself socialising with friends, or on a trip, and you then share that to your chosen social media platform, what you are doing is documenting that moment in time and sharing it for all to see.
You do this without thinking twice.
There is nothing different when adopting this for business.
Let's talk about this more.

Create an engaging logo by creating movement, in this case through rotation, using Adobe Premiere Pro.
It doesn't matter what aspect of visual content creation you're in, the bottom line is the same...Create something that stands out.
Whether you're creating something for yourself, a friend, or a client, it's important that you have the creative edge over the competition.

I'd love to know whether you agree with my responses, and if not, what are your thoughts?

The idea behind this episode came to me whilst out cycling, and references an incident I had with a window cleaner, which caused me to take a step back and reflect upon what it was that they had done wrong, and to remind myself not to make the same mistake.

Breaking Stereotypes is a project that I began to identify and raise awareness of females who are working within stereotypically male dominated fields, to expose the fact that they are just as competent as their male counterparts, but also to highlight the prejudices that they have to deal with on a daily basis. Whilst we are getting better at accepting the changing times, there is still far too many individuals and companies that are living in the past with respect to their views on who can and who can’t do a particular job.
This particular episode I linked in with photographer Natasha Lloyd-Vest from Denmark (not Norway as I mention during this episode), whilst she hasn’t had to deal with prejudices per-say, some of the advice she gives I thought was worth listening to and sharing on this platform.
If you are, or you know, of any females who would like to be part of this project i’d love to hear from you / them.

There will be times when inspiration is lacking. You have the drive to get out there with your camera in hand and want to be creative, but the heart and head just aren't in sync. Hopefully this quick episode will help spark something creative within.
At the time of recording this the weather in the UK was raining, and whilst this may be stereotypical of the UK, and not something that would usually deter us Brits form getting outside regardless, there are those days where you just don't fancy it. But this isn't to say that you can't still be creative with the camera. There are plenty of opportunities around the house, you just have to look.
Be Creative. Be Inspired. Be You.

LinkedIn is rapidly becoming one of the social platforms to be on. Gone are the days where this platform is for job hunting. Don’t get me wrong, this element still exists, but is becoming more like Facebook everyday, only for business.
However, you should be treating this platform like all the others. So, what do I mean by that.
It is my belief, if you are to cut through the inordinate amount of noise that there is on social media, you need to be incorporating the following three elements within every post you create.

One last thing before you go, I appreciate time is precious but could I ask a small favour. It would mean so much to me if you would rate and / or review this podcast. My aim is to provide you with bite sized pieces of information that will motivate and inspire you to go out and be creative, and by doing me this small favour it lets me know that I’m achieving just that, or not, I suppose that depends on whether you give me one star or five. Regardless it gives me an indication as to whether I’m succeeding or off the beaten path. You’re the best.

Since I started my journey within photography, there have been those occasions when people had the audacity to ask whether I would take photos for them, for free.
Whilst I’m not totally against this, as I do think, if you are starting out and trying to build your portfolio, this is a good way to achieve this. You get the experience and catalog, and the other person gets some shots, that may not be the best, but they understand. We all have to start somewhere and there is only so many shots you can take of family members before both you and they get tired.
But what frustrates me most of all, is peoples lack of appreciation for the creativity, time, passion and effort that goes in to producing a quality photo. Now, I do recognise that this is slowly becoming a thing of the past, what with the rise in popularity for the subject, but it is still there.
And I was reminded of this recently when I stumbled upon an ad placed by a photographer in Chicago…

With so many apps to choose from, all of which offering a range of filters, from creative to the absolute ridiculous, it has become all too easy to make eye catching photos. But can using filters be considered photography, or is it just cheating?

I’m going to make the assumption that you have an Instagram account.
But let me ask you a question. Do you post strategically, or simply post willy nilly and hope for the best?
As a customer of Hootsuite I get sent regular emails with tips on making the best out of my social media, some of which holds no interest to me, but in general it does. One such email included a link to the Hootsuite blog explaining how the Instagram algorithm works in 2019, and I thought I would share some of the tips with you in this episode.
I will be surmising the blog post, so if you wanted to read the whole thing for yourself I will leave the link within the descriptive script of this episode. https://blog.hootsuite.com/instagram-algorithm/?utm_campaign=cust_selfserve-alwayson-self_serve_engagement-glo-none----engagement_prog25_may19_igalgorithm-en--q2_2019&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=email&utm_content=&mkt_tok=eyJpIjoiT0RNeU9HWTJNekkwWVdZdyIsInQiOiJ5cExUYnc1WFRzNVU0N2hSMXppOXhkajV2K3RuUnIyOElraHBkd3Y1aFBBK2RBVlhNWXg2TXRXVDNkNkJCVG1xMUdIcHNZc2FkSUxCc1VVVk15eTlWSVlMQllPOHd1bjNjZkpuNTc2cFhiS2xMQlhyN21CaXFoT2ptUEcyeHlGSSJ9

Hello everyone and welcome to the podcast. It's been a while since I mentioned the Corpus Callosum Facebook page, a page I created to bring creators, just like you, together, to share ideas and find inspiration from others work. What I also did was create a corpus Callosum Instagram page, where I share the members photos and videos via the Repost app, but what I've found is that it doesn't allow me to share my own work. I've tried to find out if this is a common issue but to date have been unsuccessful, so I pose the question to those who use this app, is this a common issue, and how do you overcome it?
Thank you for taking the time to listen to this episode, I really do appreciate it, and if you could find the time to leave a rating and or a review that would be great. Until next time, be creative, be inspired, be you.

If I’m honest, Pinterest has never really been a platform that I have spent much focus on. Whilst I do have the app on my phone, and I do post my creative process blogs to the sight, I don’t ever really use it as a search tool. But maybe I should.

In this over populated world that is photography today, it is very hard to stand out amongst the crowd. That’s not to say this is unachievable, I’m just saying that in today’s market it is extremely difficult, given the amount of noise being generated.
One way to give yourself a chance is to be where your market is. Whilst the current trend is for photographers to be predominantly on Instagram, ask yourself this question;
“By throwing all my efforts into Instagram, who am I actually looking to target, and are my practices working?”
For me, I’ve already said that I’m looking to build my corporate headshot portfolio throughout 2019, so whilst I will and do still post to Instagram…

Everyone is vying to get your attention on social media today, and you are no different in trying to attract the attention of those you wish to be seen by, it has become the very nature of the beast. So make it easier on yourself, give yourself the best opportunity in doing this in posting at the right time of day for that particular day. The reason I mention this, is because I failed to listen to my own advise. Recently I decided to share a couple of posts to my LinkedIn feed, now, some time ago I spent a period auto scheduling these posts, and the data told me that I got better engagement if I posted at 07:45. It had been some time ago that I ran this test, so decided to run it again only to find that the data now suggested I post at 08:50, which got me thinking, how long have I been misjudging my posts. How many potential opportunities have I missed getting in front of. I’m not going to dwell on this as there’s nothing I can do about it, so let’s not waste any time concerning ourselves with woulda coulda shoulda’s. I guess what I’m trying to say is remember to go back and retest your upload times to give yourself the best opportunity in optimising your reach.

This closed Facebook group has been created in order to bring creators together, for us to share ideas, showcase our work, collaborate, ask questions and learn from one another, discuss concepts and ideas and to refer work between us as a community.
Whilst the group is open to all creatives, it is a closed group and therefore access is by invitation and request only. Feel free to invite creators who you know, but examples of their work will be required prior to acceptance. I know this may sound harsh, but the concept behind the group is to be different from the other groups on Facebook.
What this group is not, is a place where negativity will be tolerated. Constructive criticism is always welcome, but this is a space that promotes positivity. We’re in this together, and I'd love for you and all creators to join the community.
