We are saddened to learn of the passing of friend of the show and previous guest, Calvin Hamilton. Calvin was a dear friend and he will be missed by those that knew him including a number of institutions in the international and commercial legal worlds.

During the days of the pandemic it was really hard and often impossible to see people face-to-face. Long stretches of time meant less socialization and less opportunity to meet others in your professional field. Well this weekâs guests â Ulrike Gantenberg and Lisa Reiser â werenât going to accept that and founded a dynamic new initiative called Arbitration Lunch Match which set the table (pun intended) for women across the globe to meet other women in their field and located in their city. With each iteration they have grown exponentially with the next big wave coming in the Fall â it has been a boon for diversity, relationship building and the human spirit.

In February 2022, Russia declared war on Ukraine and invaded its neighbor, killing thousands, devastating countless lives and turning global economies and politics upside down.
In the wake of this military aggression, and bolstered by grit and courage, many Ukrainians found ways to continue on with their lives, in particular law students who had been preparing for the Vis international arbitration moot who now had a wholly new set of challenges to contend with...and yet, they did.

The words âOnline Dispute Resolutionâ might evoke images of innovation from the Covid-19 era or perhaps sound like the newest service offered by Facebook or Google. But in actuality, the practice dates back decades, to the early days of the internet. As the name it implies, it is the means by which consumersâdisputants can bring resolve their disputes without ever being in the same room.
Colin Rule has been a pioneer in the development of this practice area and has seen it evolve from its inception to being a hallmark of the dispute resolution field. He is also the guest, for this final episode of Season 3 of Tales of the Tribunal. He shares perspective, insights and even a bit of forward-looking on the world of ODR. A couple of years ago musical artist Jay Z made a very public complaint about the lack of Black-American arbitrators available to appoint in a dispute he was involved inâthat complaint got a lot of people thinking. Several years later, that thinking has culminated in a new listâBlack arbitration professionals with a US Connection (a big title for a big idea) â pioneered by Dr. Katherine Simpson and Ms. Nancy Thevenin, the idea brought together a group of people like never before.
That most recent accomplishment is just one of many in the story of this weekâs, and Season 2âs final guest, Nancy Thevenin. Nancy has worked in private practice, as a deputy director at the ICC, as a corporate counsel and maintains her own practice as a neutral. She tells the story of her journey through each of those positions and how each has shaped her professional identity.

For much of 2020 the world of Sports ground to a screeching halt. Teams couldnât take the field, stadiums were locked down and leagues the world over didnât know how to proceed. This stoppage in play however didnât stop sports disputes from continuing on. A specialized group of arbitrators help resolve these disputesâone such neutral is this weekâs Guest, Clifford Hendel.
Clifford has had a career spanning multiple continents and across many countries. He has acted as counsel and arbitrator in commercial, corporate and sports disputes. As the daughter of a court reporter from a small town in rural Canada, Janet Walker has accomplished a great deal during her career as an international arbitration practitioner. Sheâs taught it, sheâs written about it, sheâs even coached a team that won the Willem C. Vis Moot in Vienna.

Just before the summer sun sets on the Thames, I found myself traveling to one of Londonâs many looming skyscrapers to hear the tale of one Saadia Bhatty. A one-time aspiring International Relations professional turned lawyer with the Gide Loyrette Nouel law firm in #London.Â
